Can you see their sweet, pink baby skin through the slits in this transport truck? Six month old piglets, snuggled together on the floor, headed to slaughter because… “bacon.” Taste is not an excuses to murder someone. Meet L’Oréal! 💛 The amazing VEGAN vet student on Cromwell’s case at @pucvm in Indiana! L’Oréal has been taking wonderful care of Crommy, has her own #teamcromwell shirt, shares her lunchbox fruit with him, and makes sure he gets plenty of belly rubs in addition to his medical care! How did Crommy get so lucky as to have a #vegan vet student?! Who knows?! But we are so grateful that her experience growing up on a dairy farm and loving animals inspired her compassion to stop eating animal products and go into veterinary medicine! She has expressed how much she’s fallen in love with sweet Crom and how he’s inspired her to start learning more from the production swine experts on staff to understand how to better take care of these gentle giants as they age in a sanctuary setting. CROMWELL UPDATE! We apologize for the delay; Crommy has been in a holding pattern but we now have some excellent updates from Purdue! The hospital finally reopened Sunday, and Olivia and her mom, Adele from @oinkingacresfarm graciously transported Crom over an hour to Lafayette. He was sedated first thing Monday morning, foot evaluated, new X-rays taken, and a jugular catheter put in so he can receive all medication intravenously without having to be poked. No more needles and stress! Dr. Hawkins called during sedation and was very pleased with his progress with the hard cast and new antibiotics! The infection in the second toe bone has stopped spreading and looks like it is beginning to heal after ten days on the new antibiotics. The hard cast has immobilized his toe and provided stability. The swelling is significantly down and he is walking great in his little cast. ❤️‍🩹 The hoof is firm with no soft spots, odor, or discharge, which are all good signs! He is still missing quite a bit of the bone in his toe where it was eaten away by infection. Dr. Hawkins wants to keep him on the new IV antibiotics for a couple of weeks and see if his body is able to regrow the bone on its own. This might avoid putting him through another surgery! The second crack (the one in his good toe that happened after being on the block after the first surgery) is healing and growing out. Dr. Hawkins is not concerned about it at all especially with the support of the cast. We still need to do some significant fundraising for Cromwell’s medical bills. His current expenses are totaling around $17k with more expected if he ends up needing a bone graft surgery to help the toe heal or amputation surgery and a prosthetic in the worst-case scenario, and funds to cover his trip home. Here’s Cromwell giving everyone a big smile from Indiana! The hospital still isn’t open, but he had another visit from Dr. Hawkins today at @oinkingacresfarm who drive down to see him and give him another dose of his new antibiotics! The doctor said he looks good, is eating, drinking, going to the bathroom normally, and walking around very well in his hard cast. We are SO grateful we said no to euthanasia and took the time to find the most incredible, kind, knowledgeable doctor to help him! Dr. Hawkins is incredible. We met him for breakfast today and thanked him profusely for helping Cromwell. He just drove an hour to the sanctuary where Cromwell is staying @oinkingacresfarm … on a Saturday… and is now putting on a cast for Cromwell for healing and support while he’s awake! Cromwell agreed to this in exchange for some belly rubs. 😍 No sedation required. He just sent us this photo of the first layer of casting padding to share with you all. When done with the cast, Crom will be getting some different antibiotics to tackle the bone infection as well! Want to say thank you to Dr. Hawkins? CROMWELL UPDATE: Crommy continued to do well over the weekend! Doctors saw him up and walking around for several hours putting some weight on his healing foot, and his pain seems to be very well managed. Today he was sedated again for another bandage change and removal of some of the necrotic tissue that was debrided during surgery that has made its way to the surface of the wound. There is still lots of swelling, but some new pink tissue around the wound as well which means that blood flow to the area is occurring. They were unable to get the IV catheters to function in his ears while sedated, but shaved a larger area on him so he can continue to receive excellent pain medication in the form of Fentanyl patches. His brothers are missing him for sure, but doing well at home. They’ve been enjoying the sunshine and these delicious pineapple/lettuce/watermelon “burgers” super-volunteer Siri has been making for them with produce donations from @wholefoods @bowie1 and @clelandvalerie 🍍🐷 Please note Smudgecake patiently waiting for his pineapple burger! Our number of monthly donors has declined this winter, so we are continuing to raise funds for specific needs such as Cromwell’s surgery. We have so far raised a little over $3000 for him. His medical bills right now are around $7200 between our regular veterinarian and his surgery and recovery at the UC Davis Veterinary Hospital. CROMWELL UPDATE: Cromwell is doing AWESOME and got a visit from Mom (along with some strawberries and a half-hour belly rub) at UCD Vet Hospital today! The doctor said he was really pleasantly surprised by how well he is progressing, and though healing will be very slow, it is moving in the right direction (swipe to see his precious cast 🥺)! He saw him get up and use on his bad foot twice today which means that the pain meds they have him on and the block on his good toe (to take weight/pressure off the injured one) is working! Unfortunately his IV catheters in his ears stopped working and @_mother_of_chickens got the chance to learned a lot about the challenges of getting catheters to stay functional in these big guys. They are giving him a Fentanyl patch this evening to manage pain. This should last until his next bandage change at which point they can try to reinsert the ear catheters while he’s sedated. He did NOT like the sound of the electric razor to buzz off some hair for the patch, but Dr. Turner was very patient with him. We are so grateful for the doctors, residents, and staff at UCD and for all of you who are cheering him on!
