So, there was this group of middle aged women — young end of the boomer scale — whom I used to know via my place of work. I followed a few of them on social media for social/professional reasons so that’s how I learned their feelings from the 2020 election.
All of them are educated white picket fence suburban types who thought of themselves as moms first but, upon becoming empty nesters, they needed a career to keep their minds and lives occupied. Thus, how I met them.
They were also old school republicans of the Bush or Romney kind. They were also church going Protestants/Conservative Christians who believed in what Jesus stood for.
They hated trump with burning hate.
They were meh on Biden until he introduced Kamala Harris to the nation as his running mate. They liked her. They were able to imagine themselves doing a late Friday afternoon wine 🍷 time with her, before going home for the weekend.
They crossed over and voted Biden/Harris bc they hated trump’s sexism and racism and saw Kamala as someone their age whom they would gladly hang out with. They voted for her, as Veep, rather than for Biden.
There is hope.
Really. I believe in Harris. There is hope.
She will (almost certainly- I explained why in other post) be our official nominee for prez in a few weeks, when the delegates do their thing. She will pick an outstanding, strategic Veep who will compliment her strengths.
Trump will make an ass out of himself and all those Friday afternoon middle age wine moms will also line up behind her, regardless of their Republican history in the past. If we can hold that blue wall— WI, MI, PA— this election will be won.
Americans just need to vote and to help their neighbors vote.
Help get people registered to vote. Offer to drive neighbors to your polling place or to babysit their kids or do whatever they need so it is easier for them to vote.

Hey there, everyone. Who watched and enjoyed the concert stream yesterday? I love re-living their shows.
Also, I'm sorry I never posted about the guys' Veeps streams, but I've either been busy or feeling crummy (lingering cough), so I was sort of on autopilot with my posts in here. There is still time to purchase the Mixtape Tour 2022 Concert (from Philadelphia) and Documentary, just head over to NKOTB's official social media accounts for details.
I hope you all have a great week! ❤️

Table Read of Viral Episode After Kamala Harris
When President Joe Biden announced he was dropping his 2024 re-election bid and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to be the Democratic presidential nominee, Veep started to see a resurgence both in Max viewership and on social media. And one of the most recirculated and memed moments in the wake of the Biden-Harris news was a scene when Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ character finds out she’s going to…

Rapid Response Trump Camp Puts to Bed X Post by Harris 'Interns' Citing AP's 'Fake News' Vance Quote
Tumblr media
Thursday has become one of the worst days in Vice President Kamala Harris' mismanaged and flailing presidential run. Let's take a stroll through a few of the previous troubling incidents and statements so far, and see where it leads.
Team Harris began the day with catastrophic tidings via the poll analysis of Nate Silver...and whispers continuing to swirl like the Sonoran Desert's monsoon winds that the campaign is having regrets about who Kamala picked as her running mate.
Whoops: Report That Harris Team Regrets Not Picking Shapiro, As Nate Silver Has More Bad News for Them
Democrat veep nominee and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz didn't have things any better, with the revelation of his comments of effusive support for pro-Hamas protesters reminding everyone why he was little more than a security blanket for Harris during her recent shambles of an interview with CNN.
But perhaps more damaging was that Walz also received a subpoena from the U.S. House of Representatives, after reports surfaced that he and his gubernatorial office, along with a shady nonprofit in Minnesota--and the chief of the Biden Department of Education--may have acted in a conspiracy to bilk taxpayers of $250 million meant for COVID-19 relief in schools.

NEW: House GOP Subpoenas MN Gov. Walz on Allegations His Office Knew About $250M COVID-19 Fraud Scheme
Things only went downhill from there for Harris-Walz in the evening, though. During a campaign stop on Thursday, Ohio Senator JD Vance, the 2024 Republican vice presidential nominee, spoke about the horrific school shooting in Georgia on Wednesday, in which two teachers and two children were murdered by another student.
As my colleague, Bob Hoge wrote, not only did the Associated Press mangle the factual wording of what Vance said, but the Harris-Vance campaign mimeographed it to commit what could charitably be described as a character assassination on former President Donald Trump's running mate:
READ:
MORE LIES: Kamala Harris, Associated Press Completely Distort JD Vance's Message About School Shootings
Hoge called it a disgusting display, and he nailed it in one word. Here, though, is the icing on the campaign collapse cake for Kamala. In contrast to the single-A, sophomoric work product of the Harris social media hooligan squad, Team Trump must have had its top-tier rapid response team on the clock tonight--because they didn't mess around and demolished that dumb post to smithereens:
Here's Team Trump's spot-on response, which put the other folks' post right to bed:
In case you can't see the post, it reads:
Kamala's interns just released a statement pushing FAKE NEWS that the Associated Press just retracted.   Watch the full video and you'll clearly see that JD Vance does not say what they claim he said. These morons do nothing but lie every single day.
There isn't one incorrect word in that post. Lying is all that the Democrats do, and to do it when something can be so easily debunked in an instant says so much. These are hateful and dishonest people, who must have a lower skill level at basic marketing than your average associate at a cellphone case kiosk at the mall.
How in the world did anyone decide that these people should be in charge of making the vice president of one of the worst presidents in U.S. history appear to be a palatable choice for the American people come November? Whoever hired them should hand them their pink slips first thing on Friday morning, and then tender their own resignation immediately.
Anyway, it's too late for Team Harris to, in a manner of speaking, "be unburdened by what has been":

Tim Walz is the veep’s pick for veep (NYT) Vice President Kamala Harris has chosen Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz to join her on the Democratic ticket. Walz is not terribly well-known across the country. He does not represent a critical swing state. But, as far as many Democrats are concerned, his rural background, liberal leanings and merry sense of humor have turned him into the hottest Minnesota export since Scotch tape. A former high-school teacher and football coach, Walz is beloved by Democrats for backing policies like paid family leave. He has delighted his party in recent weeks with the simple suggestion that one reason voters should reject Trump and other Republicans is that they are just “weird.”
‘Google Is a Monopolist,’ Judge Rules in Landmark Antitrust Case (NYT) Google acted illegally to maintain a monopoly in online search, a federal judge ruled on Monday, a landmark decision that strikes at the power of tech giants in the modern internet era and that may fundamentally alter the way they do business. Judge Amit P. Mehta of U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia said in a 277-page ruling that Google had abused a monopoly over the search business. The Justice Department and states had sued Google, accusing it of illegally cementing its dominance, in part, by paying other companies, like Apple and Samsung, billions of dollars a year to have Google automatically handle search queries on their smartphones and web browsers. “Google is a monopolist, and it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly,” Judge Mehta said in his ruling.
Slow-moving Tropical Storm Debby bringing torrential rains to southeastern US (AP) Tropical Storm Debby brought prolonged downpours and flooding to the southeastern United States on Tuesday and was expected to hover over the Atlantic Ocean for the next few days, then boomerang back onto the mainland, leading to potentially record-setting rainfall. The storm was forecast to move relatively slowly across some of America’s most historic Southern cities, including Savannah, Georgia, and Charleston, South Carolina. The National Hurricane Center has forecast up to 25 inches (64 centimeters) of rain in some areas. Significant flooding in one Savannah neighborhood led to people trudging through water nearly to their waists Tuesday.
Appeal of nuclear power grows (Pew Research Center) The consensus of Americans is bending back toward the atom as nuclear energy becomes more and more appealing, essentially tied with the level seen last year at 56 percent, but up considerably from the 43 percent logged in 2020. Nuclear energy is especially interesting in the green electricity space, because worldwide it’s historically been supported by right-leaning parties given the antinuclear history of various green-linked interests of left-leaning parties. The cold arithmetic of electrification has prompted a bit of a realignment; the percentage of Democrats who favor more nuclear energy is up 12 points since 2020 and Republican support is up 14 points.
UK prime minister talks of ‘standing army’ of police to deal with rioting across Britain (AP) British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Monday that a “standing army” of specialist police would be set up to deal with rioting and that the justice system would be ramped up to handle hundreds of arrests after violent disorder rocked cities across the nation over the past week. Starmer convened an urgent meeting after lawlessness he blamed on “far-right thuggery” that was driven in part by misinformation on social media that whipped up anger over a stabbing rampage at a dance class that killed three girls and wounded 10 people. False rumors spread online that the suspect was a Muslim asylum-seeker led to attacks on immigrants and mosques. On Sunday, angry mobs attacked two hotels used to house asylum-seekers, breaking windows and lighting fires before police dispersed the crowds and residents were evacuated. Dozens of police officers have been hospitalized for injuries in the past six days after being struck with bricks, bottles and large wooden posts.
‘Celebrations of life’ increasingly replacing traditional funerals in UK, study shows (Guardian) Traditional sombre funerals in religious settings are increasingly being replaced by “celebrations of life” with personal touches held at more unusual locations in the UK, according to a study. Sixty-eight per cent of people believe funerals should be more of a celebration than a time of reflection, up from 58% in 2019, the study by Co-op Funeralcare found. The study is largely based on information from more than 500,000 funerals carried out by Co-op Funeralcare’s funeral directors over the last five years.
Myanmar Rebels Claim Regional Military Base in Major Victory (NYT) A rebel army in Myanmar announced this weekend that it had overrun a regional military base near the border with China in what is likely to be the most significant victory yet for a patchwork of resistance groups that have challenged the country’s junta. On Monday, Myanmar’s military rulers signaled that the insurgents had, in fact, made a major advance, saying the junta had lost contact with the base, the northeastern command in the city of Lashio in Shan State. It wasn’t immediately clear how the latest development would ricochet in the wider civil war. But the fall of a regional military headquarters—one of 14 in Myanmar and home to thousands of government soldiers—would be a major defeat for the junta, which has been on a war footing for decades. It would also give the rebels control of Lashio, a strategic city, and its airport.
AI in China (SCMP) Mainland China added more than 237,000 new companies involved in artificial intelligence (AI) during the first half of this year, according to corporate database platform Qichacha, taking the total to 1.67 million amid Beijing’s efforts to foster the technology’s development. Of that total, more than 1.48 million—almost 90 per cent—were set up after 2017, when the State Council, the country’s cabinet, published the Next Generation Artificial Intelligence Development Plan that outlined a goal to become a world leader in the technology.
Japan Needs Foreign Workers. It’s Just Not Sure It Wants Them to Stay. (NYT) Ngu Thazin wanted to leave her war-torn country for a better future. She set her sights on Japan. In Myanmar, she studied Japanese and graduated with a chemistry degree from one of her country’s most prestigious universities. Yet she gladly took a job in Japan changing diapers and bathing residents at a nursing home in a midsize city. “To be honest, I want to live in Japan because it is safe,” said Ms. Thazin, who hopes eventually to pass an exam that will allow her to work as a licensed caregiver. “And I want to send my family money.” Japan desperately needs people like Ms. Thazin to fill jobs left open by a declining and aging population. But even as foreign employees become much more visible in Japan, working as convenience store cashiers, hotel clerks and restaurant servers, they are treated with ambivalence. Politicians remain reluctant to create pathways for foreign workers to stay indefinitely. The political resistance to immigration in long-insular Japan, as well as a public that is wary of integrating newcomers, has led to a nebulous legal and support system that makes it difficult for foreigners to put down roots.
US personnel wounded in attack against base in Iraq, officials say (Reuters) At least five U.S. personnel were injured in an attack against a military base in Iraq on Monday, U.S. officials told Reuters, as the Middle East braced for a possible new wave of attacks by Iran and its allies following last week's killing of senior members of militant groups Hamas and Hezbollah. Two Katyusha rockets were fired at al Asad airbase in western Iraq, two Iraqi security sources said. One Iraqi security source said the rockets fell inside the base. It was unclear whether the attack was linked to threats by Iran to retaliate over the killing of the Hamas leader.
Most Americans oppose sending U.S. troops to defend Israel, poll finds (Washington Post) For the first time in recent years, a majority of Americans oppose sending U.S. troops to defend Israel if it comes under attack by its neighbors, according to a nationwide poll released Tuesday. The survey by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs found that 55 percent of Americans opposed sending U.S. troops to defend Israel if its neighbors attacked it, while 41 percent supported doing so. Republicans were more supportive of such a move, with 55 percent of them saying they favored sending troops, while 35 percent of Democrats and independents said the same. The Chicago Council poll showed a downward shift in Americans’ support for sending U.S. troops to Israel’s defense since the war in Gaza. The share of Americans who support sending U.S. troops to defend Israel if its neighbors attack it (41 percent) is the lowest since the Chicago Council began asking the question in 2010.
US hands over its last military base in Niger to the ruling junta (AP) On Monday, the U.S. lost its final foothold in Niger, handing over a key military base to the country’s military junta. Niger’s military government took power with a coup last summer and has maintained control over the country despite the threat of invasion by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The U.S. has had to hand over both of its military bases in Niger after the junta ended an agreement made by the country’s previous government. That pact had allowed America to operate two bases in Niger, using the outposts as home bases for its counter-terrorist operations in the Sahel region of Africa. Now, Niger has turned to Russia for help in defending itself from extremist groups operating south of the Sahara Desert. About two dozen American soldiers remain in Niger as they clean the remainder of their country’s presence—their offices have been relocated to the U.S. embassy in the country’s capital of Niamey.
Africa’s Richest City Needs $12 Billion to Fix Infrastructure (Bloomberg) Johannesburg, billed as Africa’s richest city because of its concentration of businesses and millionaires, needs 221 billion rand ($12 billion) to catch up on maintenance and overdue upgrades across its collapsing road, power and water networks. The shortfall comes at a time when regular power outages—the result of distribution-network breakdowns—hit large swathes of Johannesburg. Officials leave potholes unattended for months and parts of the city had no water for as long as 11 days in March. Financial and political turmoil in recent years has beset the city of about 5 million people that’s had eight mayors since 2019 due to constantly shifting coalitions.
Neuralink has implanted second trial patient with brain chip, Elon Musk says (Guardian) Another person has entered the Elon Musk Matrix. During an eight-hour podcast released on Friday, Musk announced that his brain-chip company had successfully implanted its technology into the brain of a second human test subject. The implant will grant the anonymous person the ability to interface with computers using just their brain. According to the podcast episode, Neuralink’s latest test subject has a spinal cord injury similar to the startup’s first patient (who was injured in a diving accident). Musk said that 400 of the Neuralink device’s 1,024 electrodes were working. Neuralink’s first patient/test subject has faced some issues with his implant in the past. The device’s wires had retracted from his brain, reducing the number of electrodes that controlled the device. Through increasing the sensitivity of the device, Musk says it was able to function normally “with only roughly 10, 15% of the electrodes working.” The company plans to implant its device into eight more patients this year.

The missing man.
Tumblr media
May 16, 2024
At the Republican National Committee's spring donor retreat held at his Florida golf resort last week, Donald Trump mingled with a long list of potential running mates. Included were such reliable Trump toadies as senators Marco Rubio of Florida, J.D. Vance of Ohio and Tim Scott of South Carolina. Also in attendance were North Dakota governor Doug Burgum, South Dakota governor and puppy killer Kristi Noem, as well as New York congresswoman Elise Stefanik.
But little notice has been given to the fact that absent from this parade of flatterers and flunkies was Trump's former vice president, Mike Pence (pictured above leaving the MAGA formation). It's standard practice, of course, for presidents who are running for reelection to keep their vice presidents on the ticket. So why isn't Trump?
The answer to that is fairly straightforward: Pence refused to join in Trump's illegal fake electors plot to overturn the 2020 election and return him to office. It seems that when Trump incited thousands of armed rioters — some chanting "Hang Mike Pence!" — to attack the US Capitol in January 2021, that was the last straw. From then on, the once faithful veep was a committed never-Trumper. Said Pence later, "President Trump asked me to put him over the Constitution. But I chose the Constitution, and I always will."
Naturally, Trump never called Pence on or after January 6 to see if he was all right. And never apologized for putting his dependably loyal #2 in danger. Instead, Trump's response was about what you'd expect from a weak, petty individual who never forgets or forgives a slight. Last August, he wrote on his failing social media site:
WOW, it’s finally happened! Liddle’ Mike Pence, a man who was about to be ousted as Governor Indiana until I came along and made him V.P., has gone to the Dark Side. I never told a newly embolded…Pence to put me above the Constitution…He’s delusional, and now he wants to show he’s a tough guy.
Last year, Pence entered the presidential race himself, calling for a rejection of Trump's "siren song of populism" and for a return to the solid conservative policies of "limited government, free enterprise, fiscal responsibility and traditional moral values." But his words fell on deaf ears with a party mired in MAGA madness. He dropped out in October 2023.
And so it is that, with former VP Pence omitted from the Mar-a-Lago auditions, Trump's squadron of those who could serve as his campaign wingman has a noticeable vacancy.

I receive a check in the mail for jury duty. Forty dollars. Hmm.
Trump guilty of fraud. He is supposed to be a good businessman. Supposed to be a genius. But he claims to have money he doesn't have. He greatly exaggerated the value of his properties, sometimes tripling their worth. There is said to be overwhelming evidence against him. Trump immediiately goes on his social media site and rants. Unfair! (Etc.) Stay tuned.

Power outage this morning, when I would be (routinely) going to my computer. Odd feeling of not being able to type a few words. Recalling the days when I used to write in longhand... The channel on the TV that plays classical music is (of course) also out. Funny...my dependence on this morning interlude of music.
Later: Problem resolved but my routine interrupted.
Odd, this unexpected break in routine.
Evening: Debate among Republican presidential candidates. Trump absent, of course, but due to his lead in the polls said to be the big winner in this (as the others butt heads). Perhaps this is all about who will be chosen as veep. (Though he was among them, we can forget Pence.)
Trump says, later, he wouldn't chose any of them as a running mate.
While the so-called debate went on Trump spoke at a rally. Non-union auto workers (so it seems). They were cheering him on, of course. I think that, like the crowd who greeted him when he came down the escalator, they were paid a little something to be there.
