Illustrator is used to create:

Vector-based illustrations

Icons

Typography

Logos

Colours - render colours are editable (gradients and transparency)

Also:

Scalable graphics - vector artwork is not resolution dependant - which means that everything can be scaled up/ down without losing quality

Visual assets - the creations made in Illustrator can be used in the Adobe Creative Suite, as well as for print and web-based projects

Working analog - Illustrator and working analog go together really well - the process used in Illustrator is very similar to analog, which makes it easy to understand

How Illustrator Works Vecror graphics are made from points, lines, curves and shapes that are based on mathematical formulas. Becuase of these formulas, the scale scale does not affect the quality. The geometrical elements that make up the vector graphics (lines, circles, curves) are defined through parameters such as:

Begininning and end points

Radii

Edge length and line width

Colours

Filling patterns

Pros and Cons of Vector-based Images

Pros:

Scale doesn’t affect quality

Files can be small

Proportions can be adjusted

Cons:

Not siutable for complex graphic dispalays

The file often has to be reasterised (converted to being pixel-based)
