Top 10 Favourite Shorts from VC Film Fest 2024
@vcfilmfestival is over and I'm hoping some of the #shortfilms will get expanded upon. There's some gems worth expanding on #animation #liveaction #moviereviews
This year’s VC Film Festival at Los Angeles had a lot of short films to showcase, and presented here are my top picks after seeing more than just a handful of animations. There’s live action works which makes my list of top ten best presentations. They are presented in alphabetical order, and if I had to say which is number one, it’s a tie between The Queen’s Flowers and The 7th Night. As this…

I can’t wait to step into the theatre and enjoy the rich culture of this curated film festival. Shaka: A Story of Aloha and Why The Spirit of Hawaii is Everywhere!
Everything you want to know about Shaka and why the Hawaiian Spirit preserveres is well explored in this #documentary. Hopefully after @VCFilmFestival there'll be more screenings! Our #moviereview is at:
Just how a simple gesture came to represent the beating heart of Hawaii in Shaka: A Story of Aloha is not only fascinating but also a look back at history. There are multiple meanings (with hang loose being the most popular during the 70s) and six origin stories. And instead of giving credit to one, what I loved is in how this feature simply said, let’s give credit to everyone rather than just…

Starring Jerry as Himself Delivers One Part Documentary, Another Part True Crime Thriller!
Playing at Chicago Critics Film Festival @criticsff & Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival @VCFilmFestival May 11 is Starring Jerry as Himself, a poignant multi-genre style work that blends #documentary #crime & #thriller together! #moviereview at:
Playing May 11th at the Chicago Critics Film Festival at 5pm (CST, tickets) and Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival on the same date, 7pm (PST, tickets) The movie Starring Jerry as Himself is a very cautionary tale which defies conventions since we’re not sure where fact and fiction are mixed. I suspect it was made following what happened to Jerry C. Hsu after getting conned out of a lot of…

@heyjudylei The World Greatest #movie about #chineseamerican families and how to live is coming to @VCFilmFestival @vcmediaorg #LAAPFF! It’s a #drama no one will forget, and the message in this work is just as impactful for us #chinese in #yvr #yyj.
Playing at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival at the Tateuchi Democracy Forum @ JANM May 13, 2022 (Buy Tickets) Judy Lei is a young filmmaker based out of New York City, and her debut work serves more than one purpose. Kent Donguines' Kalinga Digs into a Strange Social Problem
Playing soon at @VCFilmFestival #LAAPFF2022 is Kalinga (Care) as part of the KUWENTUHAN shorts program. This #documentary is deep and worth watching for what goes on in #yvr #vancouver and employing nannies from abroad. Review at:
Playing at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival at the 2220 Arts + Archive venue on May 10, 2022, 7:00 pm (BUY TICKETS) Kalinga (Care) is a very emotional documentary with a local connection. It examines a group of Filipino women who left their families to become nannies abroad. Some arrived in the ironically named Terminal City (Vancouver, BC) to help non-Asian parents who don’t fully…

Maika: The Girl From Another Galaxy is More than a Charming Tribute to Speilberg
Maika is a fun #Vietnamese #family #scifi #comedy #movie paying tribute to Steven Spielberg and Stephen Chow's past works and its playing May 7 @VCFilmFestival #moviereview at:
Playing at the LAAPFF 2022 at the Directors Guild of America on May 7, 2022 12:15 pm (buy tickets) Maika: The Girl From Another Galaxy is a fun Vietnamese movie that will be very familiar to anyone who knows Steven Spielberg’s work. It’s not meant to be thoughtful, but instead has fun with the boy meets alien girl concept. It’s also considered this country’s first family friendly created content…

The Fabulous Filipino Brothers at the LAPAFF!
The Fabulous Filipino Brothers is the perfect film to close off @VCFilmFestival #LAAPFF2021! Playing later today! #comedy #drama #family #moviereview at:
By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest) Aratani Theatre @ JACCCOct 2, 20218:00 pm Dante Basco‘s wicked sense of humour, or love of his own family dynamic in The Fabulous Filipino Brothers, defines much of his life in the streets of Pittsburg, California. The question of how much was real life versus fictionalized has me wondering how this Wonder Years type of film came about. Or should that be Malcolm in…
