The Twin's Dossiers

So, something I've been thinking about a lot and something I have seen speculation about, both on tumblr and on the sketchiness that is TV Tropes: The Dossiers of the twins on the Project SEEDS computer in where the Tesla record is being stored. It has information on Kni (Nai) and Vash, with Vash's file expressly in with Tesla's folder, which alarms a lot of fans. And a lot of us are wondering how did it get there? I've wondered, was it just a computer record the ship just does automatically about whatever goes on in it? Did Rem input the data for, say, health-information reasons (presumably to delete it all later?) Was it...for sinister reasons? Or did William Conrad come along and input it? I believe that Conrad did it.

It's possible that I'm wrong and will be eating crow when the second season of Stampede comes out, but as of now, I believe that it makes the best sense. There isn't a record of them like this in the manga. There is the Tesla record, but no trace of them on the main ship's computer.

First of all, I'm not sure the ship's computer would just be tracking them and making its own record, even with advanced AI, nor would have a deliberate file-placement. Second, Rem isn't stupid. She tells Nai to eat and drink like a human and to hide his powers. She does this for a reason. It is doubtful that she would keep records that the rest of the crew could be in danger of discovering should an emergency happen with the ship that would cause them to wake up. Third, the idea that Rem would have something sinister in mind for them is grossly out of character. I've seen that idea fronted. I think those people haven't read the manga. That leaves... The bastard, himself. In the manga, Conrad had opposed the experiments on Tesla along with Rem (according to her). He met Vash and Knives briefly when he'd not gone back to sleep right after the emergency situation on the ship and had snuck around. He was accepting of them, found them quite a wonderment and agreed with Rem to keep them a secret. He later wound up being recruited by Knives, but was more of his personal doctor / Plant-scientist and wasn't involved with the Gung Ho Guns / was just another recruit, held at literal knife-point and looking for atonement. In Stampede, he took a level in Asshole. He wasn't the greatest of guys in the manga, but he took a real hit in Stampede, doing gruesome human experimentation on Wolfwood and Livio personally, as well as on Rollo (who is sort of a new, Stampede-only character given how much he differs from the original Monev's origins). In Stampede, much like the recruitment meeting in the manga - Knives knew Conrad. He sought him out. While Knives *could* have found out Conrad purely from records, I think they'd met before, on the ship, just like in the manga. So.... since these suspicious dossiers exist, since Knives knew Conrad on sight and since Conrad is much more of a bastard in Stampede, (I think he was more involved with Tesla, too) I'm going to wager a guess that an incident happened like what happened in the manga with the crew waking up, Rem putting them back to beddy-bye, Conrad staying awake to meet the twins... And then at some point, putting their data into his research-computer. In other words, I think in the reboot, he gave Rem false assurances, convinced her of his remorse over Tesla when he probably wasn't as remorseful as he let on. Or perhaps something more complicated is afoot. Nai he saw as a "perfect being" - untouchable, the perfect bridge between Plants and Humans. Meanwhile, Vash is in the same folder as Tesla - perhaps, as a Plant with some human needs (food / water / sleep) and no apparent powers (until the push-pull thing comes into play), Conrad sees him as "the expendable twin," and thus a good test subject model, just like Tesla. He certainly treated Vash as such in the Soup.

~ Literally his best friend/partner, an ai eyeball named Aiba, thinks he’s the most annoying man in the universe. As does his adoptive daughter. And like anyone who has to be in the room with him for more than 2 seconds. He’s got an inflated ego, an unhealthy obsession with porn, and makes terrible dad jokes. I have never met an ai fan that doesn’t think he’s so annoying but also everyone adores him at the same time. We all like him but would love to electrocute him yknow.

~ He’s SO ANNOYING he makes sex jokes constantly and it annoys everyone around him. His reaction speed increases to SUPERHUMAN LEVELS when he wants porn. He sucks so bad and flirts with women and his daughter has to threaten him about it and I’m in love with him anyways. 10/10 character.

~ Idiot managed to sleep through his adoptive mother’s inspirational speech about not giving up hope for humanity to better itself, internalized his trauma to an insane degree, and then decided that he had to commit genocide.

~ He just be following Vash around… killing everyone… speaking all snobby and playing his piano like he’s the most important guy in the world (note: he genuinely believes he’s the most important guy in the world). Named himself Millions Knives bc he thought it sounded cool. He doesn’t even HAVE A MILLION KNIVES (in most iterations).

There is misinformation going around that on the official Trigun Stampede site it says that Knives is in love with his brother in a romantic way. This is false. This misunderstanding first started when somebody shared a screenshot of the Millions Knives character bios which supposedly stated he is "strongly in love and obsessed with his brother". This was a Google Translate translation. Google Translate is useless for translating Japanese because communication in Japanese depends a lot on context that is not as clear as in other languages. Therefore AI is terrible for translating Japanese.

What does it say, then?

The word that is used for love in the official website is 愛 (ai). Anyone that knows Japanese knows that Japanese people have different words for love depending on what type of love it is. 愛 (ai) is used to describe pure and familial love. 恋愛(ren-ai) or 恋 (koi) is for romantic and sexual love. Think of it as something similar to agape vs eros.

This is very important because you will continue to see the word love being used in relation to Vash and Knives, but what kind of love it is is important. It's 愛 (ai), which is used to describe pure and familial love.

But despite the unexpectedness of her arrival, he absolutely adores his daughter, Kotori. Even with the initial shock and the challenges of single parenthood, Kotori's gentle nature and quiet strength quickly made her the center of his life. She's captured his heart completely, and he loves his sweet little angel to pieces, and would do anything to make her smile.

Modern/Single Dad Wolfwood: Wolfwood never envisioned himself as a father. He liked kids well enough, but he never felt like he needed one of his own, at least not yet. Now, however, he finds himself raising a spirited 6-year-old daughter, Kaeda. She's a bundle of energy and determination that always keeps him on his toes. Modern/Small Dog Owner Wolfwood: Wolfwood never really saw himself as a potential pet owner. He liked animals well enough, but he never really felt the need to have a pet of his own. But now he owns a 2 year old dachshund named Marbles. He’s begrudging to admit it but the little Doxin has really wormed her way into his heart. He loves his little rescue pup, and may or may not coddle her more than he should, though he’d vehemently deny it if you pointed it out.

Modern/Dog Dad Vash: Vash had grown up around dogs for most of his life (Rem adores them and has owned several over the years) so it was only natural for him to eventually get a pair of his own. He had picked up his two shelter pups a couple years ago, and he loves them to bits. Muffy is a large, 3 year old, energetic lab mix; and Minnie is a bossy 4 year old little Pom. They're a dynamic duo and his best gals.

Modern/Dog Walker Nai: Ironically, Nai was never that big on dogs, he was more of a cat person at the end of the day. But despite how cold he is towards people, dogs at least seemed to like him more often than not. Which is why he took up dog walking after dropping out of University. For the most part he only walks for friends (ie. Vash's friends) or people Rem sends his way. He can often be seen with a pack of pups in hand, and more often than not with Stamps (Rem's golden retriever) tugging at the lead.

Wolf Hybrid! Wolfwood: Being a hybrid isn't easy, a lesson Wolfwood has had to learn countless times. He embodies the lone wolf stereotype: dark fur, sharp eyes, an aversion towards others—the whole package. Yet, despite it all, the wolf-man seems to have developed something akin to a soft spot for you.

Post TriMax Wolfwood (Ghostwood): In your travels across NoMan's Land, you seem to have picked up an apparition. You're not entirely sure why he's decided to "haunt" you, but he's not the worst traveling companion to have, though there's still a lot you don't know about your ghostly companion.

Line cook Wolfwood: he dingy diner on the outskirts of town isn’t much to write home about, but what it lacks in quality is made up for by its resident line cook. (Or at least for you it does.) You’ve somehow become a regular at the place, just so you can chat with him. The dark haired man can be a bit crude and overly flirtatious at times, but he makes for pleasant company. And he insists on serving you "on the house," no matter how much you protest.

Zhat Vash and the Romulan Diaspora, Picard s1e2 Rewatch.

The timeline of the Romulan separation from Vulcan becomes even more murky and shrouded in legend and propaganda. Continuity complaints abound but "canon violation" often really just means "I don't like this, it is silly and dumb."

This is part of a series of essays reevaluating Star Trek Picard and interrogating the widely held fandom criticism that Picard made the Federation into a Dystopia.

This is the episode where we learn the name Zhat Vash in an info dump by Laris and Zhabon. Intriguingly and perhaps problematically they are described as having been active for thousands upon thousands of years. 

This doesn’t line up very neatly with the hazy info we have on Romulan history. The exodus of Vulcans who rejected Surak’s teachings was only supposed to have taken place circa 470 CE when “those who marched beneath the Raptor’s wings” lost a struggle for domination of Vulcan society and left for the stars. 

However, if the people who would become the Debrune and the Romulans could leave Vulcan in the first place and feasibly make an interstellar journey, that implies that Vulcan had had at least rudimentary interstellar travel prior which does not preclude a group of explorers who would become Zhat Vash stumbling across the Admonition and bringing its anti-Synth warning back with them.

Scrutiny of Memory Alpha to refresh my memory of what has been canonically established about Romulan and Vulcan history also brought up an interesting detail: Vulcans may not actually be from Vulcan. 

In a TOS episode Spock actually speculates that a powerful telepathic species they encounter may actually have been ancestors of the Vulcans. Thus there is another possible vector for Zhat Vash to have been introduced into Vulcan and Romulan societies in that Zhat Vash may actually predate both civilizations.

At the risk of deviating into fan theory territory, I do have to wonder if this all adds extra texture to the Romulan / Vulcan split wherein Zhat Vash may have played a role in heightening tensions between the two over concerns that a rejection of emotion and the embrace of pure reason would lead the Vulcans to ultimately dismiss concerns over artificial intelligence as illogical products of anxiety over AI being hostile, uncontrollable, or a moral hazard of some sort. 

It's also possible that tales of Zhat Vash have grown across multiple retellings and they were only founded after the schism. 

I take a stance that we ought to be open to the idea that not all exposition is created equally and not all narrators are reliable. Zhabon and Laris may be our Herodotus in this scene: they’re relating what they were told, and believe up to a point, but we the audience ought not to assume their rumors about a cult operating inside or alongside the Tal’Shiar are completely accurate in every little detail.

It's worth reminding ourselves that even Picard himself does not seem to be a wholly reliable narrator either! In just the first two episodes, he repeatedly demonstrates lack of self awareness and other errors in judgment or lack of knowledge. Thus I think we ought to entertain the idea that even characters who are providing detailed exposition are stating what they believe but not necessarily providing 100% definitive facts about the setting.

At any rate, we find out that Commodore Oh, who has an ambiguous role in ensuring security from clandestine Romulan assassins operating on Earth, is herself a member of Zhat Vash. From what I can recall, even in private Oh does not “break character” which suggests to me that while it's assumed she’s Romulan, it's possible she is culturally Vulcan at least in her decision to abstain from overt displays of emotion. 

Seeing as she’s not the first deep cover Romulan impersonating a Vulcan who presumably would have to pass as Vulcan to other Vulcans, I find myself wondering if some Romulans actually did go on to develop an ascetic tradition that mirrors Surak’s teachings but is either dogmatically different enough from Surak’s tradition to be tolerated by other Romulans or is merely tolerated for its usefulness in grooming deep cover agents.

Thematically, I find that I’m kind of over the trope of secret societies with seemingly omnipotent capabilities to hide and manipulate their host civilization. The X-Files is my own personal touchstone for this trope becoming popular and the longer the show ran, the more the trope became its own problem because the more you tug on the strings of that storyline, the more answers you have to cough up as to how they do what they do and why, and the explanations often become a bit hard to believe, if not contradictory. 

Zhat Vash hiding inside of the Tal’Shiar, creating a situation where you have nesting dolls of memetically ultra effective, conspiratorial organizations just takes this to another level. 

Having said that, the trope is subverted a bit in that while Zhat Vash is feared, they’re clearly not as good as they’re mythologized as being. First off Laris and Zhabon are able to pretty accurately lay out their agenda based on scraps of hearsay. Just off of memory, while Zhat Vash’s motives will be expanded upon as the season progresses, Laris and Zhabon already have at least the broad outline completely dead on.

This represents a level of operational security that falls well below Section 31 who had managed to erase almost all evidence of their having existed sometime after the events of Discovery’s second season and most people who seemed to have had personal knowledge of Section 31 kept it quiet enough that not even the likes of Captain Picard ever apparently heard so much as a scrap of a rumor. 

Also this is a rant for another time, but I absolutely, positively despise Section 31. Absolutely nothing Star Trek Picard does corrupts the Federation thematically more than Section 31. It reeks of a refusal by the inventors of the organization to accept the core premise of the setting that a civilization that devotes itself to fairness both in equity and equality could ever endure or prosper.

Returning to Zhat Vash, as individuals Oh, Narek, and Narissa are far from perfect superspies. I remember Narissa in particular being a real problem for Oh and Narek who are far more cautious and plotting than the impulsive and rather sadistic Narissa. 

Given my biases against conspiracy within a conspiracy storylines, I do look forward to trying to rejudge Zhat Vash and whether I think it holds together better than the Syndicate of the X-Files. For now I don’t exactly hate it, but I don’t love it.

and there's this big company called whitecliffe industries running a lot of things on earth after rich ppl jumped ship to "live among the stars"(?). they steal the work of tala magboo bc they're intrigued by the fact that her AI displays signs of budding superpowers and after a while of fucking with the code, jackass and ellen are split from it :} sorta. idk. not a coder<3

anyways typical government experiment running free after years of abuse in the name of science, the twins escape

stuff happens, they get separated, jackass splits off and makes friends and ellen... doesn't :). well, she does find preston half dead in a sewer after being attacked by another escaped experiment (a parasite that lives in her eye socket)

stuff happens, jackass at first cool with supervillainy that ellen proposes as a way to get revenge, but due to morality being swayed by friends and also the horror of murder he backs out

ellen gets bitter, stuff happens, she and peter fuck(?) more stuff and OH NO jackass killed in virus addled anger :( but this is where ai superpowers from earlier??? kick in???

i haven't figured it out Yet but my thought is that jacks death jumpstarts ellens superpower, and she unconsciously uses both it and jacks power to create a timeloop

the thing about it is that she Forgets, just like everyone else so things keep repeating

but as time goes on and time becomes more compressed and folded in on itself, the previous realities sorta? bleed through? and memories come back more and more?

i want it to end happy with a character corruption then healing arc for ellen as she realizes that actually Friends Are Good and Don't Lash Out At People You Love (Because You Might Kill Them). idk? its hard to explain but like. think knives and vash sorta thing except ellen only wants to kill a company's worth of humans and not every human ever
