This passage from The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown discusses how many of the boys lived together in a rented house a block from campus;
“The boys, though, were having the times of their lives. On or off the water, they were almost always together now. They ate together, studied together, and played together. Most of them had joined the Varsity Boat Club and lived in the club's rented house on Seventeenth Avenue, a block north of the campus, though Joe remained in the basement of the YMCA. On weekend evenings they gathered around the old upright piano in the club's parlor and sang for hours as Don Hume tore through jazz tunes, show tunes, blues, and ragtime. Sometimes Roger Morris pulled out his saxophone and joined in. Sometimes Johnny White got out his violin and played along fiddle-style. And almost always Joe got out his banjo or his guitar and joined in as well. Nobody laughed at him anymore, nobody dreamed of laughing at him.”
This had me intrigued so I did a little digging to see if the house might still be around. I found this image of the members of the Varsity Boat Club in 1936. I’m assuming this is referring to Fall 1936 because our boys are all seniors, so Bobby Moch has already graduated.
But on this document is also the address for their rental house: 4551 Seventeenth N.E.

While its parent label leaned into patterns for its delivery#BBC ICECREAM takes a tad more of a toned-down approach#prioritizing craftsmanship over crazy prints or eye-catching patterning.#A puffer jacket lands in all-black#interrupted only by an ICECREAM logo embroidered on the chest and an outlined Running Dog logo placed on the backside. Other jacket silhoue#similarly imbued with red logos on the chest and back. The jacket arrives with a pair of matching two-toned pants.#The Paneled Varsity Jacket also takes a two-toned design#dipped in shades or orange and brown and elevated with patched lettering on the chest and back. Another varsity jacket arrives in green and#with a final one – the Boa Zip-Up Varsity Jacket – covered in sherpa and adorned in badges.#Patterns do appear further down in the collection#however. A Motorcycle Long-Sleeve t-shirt stands out with its all-over black and green design#complete with graphics stamped on the sleeves and an “IC” on the back. sometimes the most random things make me miss being on a team soooo bad
#i literally said after my last xcmeet in hs that i was never doing a sport again#then where did they catch me on my first day of college?#moving in early. to run xc.#i even miss fris but i miss varsity sports more. Ig cuz i ran so long#now its like adulthood... maybe someday when i get a real job I'll like have a longer term team again#i still need to ask my next workplace about what my days off/hours might be to see if i can sign up for a frisbee league...#it's just like. Running will never be a part of my life like that again. sports won't be#Doesn't matter that I'm a better runner now than I was when I was 19#now it's just me. no team. occasional meetups. It's me and my plan and whatever I want.#and i like my running more now but i still MISS IT.#i literally ran xc for 11 yrs-ish. i had one friend on any team during that time. but still#when i played soccer i played with my best friend but we had been friends since meeting on a Rec team at age 9.#i never had other team friends#it's just.
