Wire Wrapped Pendant Variscite Necklace
Variscite - it has magical properties and is able to influence the spiritual development of man. Often it is used in meditation, because they believe that it will help to find peace and balance of mind, open the unusual human abilities and talents.
"Variscite is sometimes used as a semi-precious stone, and is popular for carvings and ornamental use. It was first described in 1837 and named for the locality of Variscia, the historical name of the Vogtland, in Germany. At one time, variscite was called Utahlite. At times, materials which may be turquoise or may be variscite have been marketed as "variquoise". Appreciation of the color ranges typically found in variscite have made it a popular gem in recent years." Mineral Mondays: Variscite
I’ve kind of been putting off doing this one (but missing last Monday was totally by accident, I swear!) because it’s one of the few stones I have a serious love/hate relationship with. It’s been on my to-do list long enough that I have a picture of a piece from my collection from before it went on loan.
Why the strong feelings towards this stone? Well, gemologically, it’s really similar to turquoise. There was a good while in college that I couldn’t separate the two (and not to be rude, but I guarantee you 9/10 graduates from my school wouldn’t have a clue how to separate them even now).
But it’s easy, you say! Variscite is green, and turquoise is, well, turquoise! But... Not always. Variscite ranges from light green to apple green to bluish-green, which overlaps a fair bit with turquoise’s color range. There are ways to tell the two apart, but it’s normally only possible with special equipment.
Variscite forms in the orthorhombic crystal system, but in a massive habit - individual crystals are rarely, if ever, found. It’s fairly brittle and soft (Mohs 4-5) but can be bought as slabs, tumbled pieces, and polished into cabochons. Usually opaque, variscite can have translucent edges (see my picture above) and higher-quality pieces can be gel-like in appearance, though always with some opacity.
It is typical for variscite to have darker green splotches or streaks, though these may not be present in some pieces. Veining, or spiderwebbing, is also common - black veining is seen in stones from Nevada, while brown or whitish veining can be found elsewhere.
High quality bluish-green variscite with black veining is particularly difficult to separate from turquoise - however, variscite is much more rare and not particularly valuable, so sellers will rarely try to pass one off as the other. Beware of “variquoise”, a name sometimes used when the seller doesn’t know if the stone they’re selling is variscite or turquoise. Potch green opal (that is, green opal showing no play-of-color) can also be remarkably similar in appearance to variscite.
Correspondences
Element: Earth Sign: Virgo, Scorpio, Gemini, Taurus Planet: Earth Color: Bright green Herbs and plants: Almond, cedarwood, anemone, lemon verbena, tea tree, primrose Season: Spring
Good for…
…connecting with nature ...relaxation ...environmental conservation magic ...abundance ...hope and courage ...stabilizing work environments ...calming and liveliness ...harmony ...stress relief
Variscite is a particularly good stone for laying out in labyrinths or gridding. Meditate while tracing a variscite labyrinth to connect to earth, nature, and spring energy.
A variscite pendulum is said to be the best sort of pendulum for detecting ley lines.
Sleeping with variscite under your pillow can help promote peaceful sleep, while keeping variscite at the foot of your bed may aid in lucid dreaming.
Mineral Mondays Overview
Please Note: My personal collection of crystals is currently on loan and will remain so for several months. Photographs in upcoming Mineral Mondays posts will be from other sources.

VarisciteVariscite is becoming one of the most popular semi-precious gemstones on today's market. You will see it being used in all styles of jewelry by all ethnicity of jewelers. Variscite is considered to be one of the rarer and lesser-known collector's gemstones available today. Its appearance often causes it to be confused with Turquoise, but Variscite's color tends to be greener rather than blue. In some cases, materials may be marketed as 'variquoise', a name which combines 'turquoise' with 'variscite'. It is a relatively rare hydrated aluminum phosphate mineral, and gem-quality deposits and occurrences are considerably rare; only the highest quality material is used for gemstones and ornate carvings. Variscite takes an excellent polish, often better than that of turquoise. It is most famous for its different shades of green caused by traces of chromium, although its colors can range from light bluish green to medium and dark green and, very occasionally, red. Variscite is sometimes traded as 'utahlite', a trade name given in reference to Utah, the site of the USA's famed Variscite deposits. Utahlite is often cut and polished into smooth slabs and halved nodules. On today's market the most popular type of Variscite is the spiderweb Variety which is a much higher grade. The best spiderweb Variscite comes from Nevada and Snowville, Utah.Variscite is named after 'Variscia', the historical name of the Vogtland district in Saxony, Germany. It was first discovered and described in 1837, when it was found in massive fine-grained aggregate form; crystals are extremely rare. Variscite is an end-member of the isomorphic row of variscite-strengite series of minerals. Like the garnet and feldspar groups, variscite-strengite minerals have an identical crystalline structure, but exhibit slightly varying composition. Owing to variscite's unique mode of occurrence, it is often formed and associated with other phosphate minerals, resulting in interesting veining, splotches and other coloring habits. Although all variscite is valued by collectors, emerald-green variscite from Utah and the black spider-webbed variscite from Nevada are among the most desirable gemmy materials.

Almost finished with this batch. Slow progress on this group of jewels. But I am almost there. Cherry Creek Jasper, Australian Variscite, and Variquoise. The Variquoise ring on my middle finger has been spoken for. Whatever is left over from my Red Dirt show this Saturday, I will post final pics on Sunday. Have a great week. ...#workinprogress #wip #benchwork #jewelrydesigner #jewelrymaking #jewelrydesign #metalsmith #silversmith #instasmithy #ladysmith #greenlionsawframe #handmadejewelry #riojeweler #rachelmpost #variquoise #variscite #cherrycreekjasper https://www.instagram.com/p/BqGWNEggBi3/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1j7s9sfvqj4cf

Making progress on this big Variquoise cuff. I am ready to solder the setting onto the cuff. Then adding more elements to the cuff bands. Wearing this gorgeous vintage sandcast Turquoise cuff that I saved from a dusty antique store in Bakersfield a couple of weeks ago. It was blackened terribly from caked on tarnished. Polished it up and it is a stunner. This one is giving me good vibes from its creator as my fingers always get sore from creating these big cuffs. #workinprogress #wip #rachelmpost #benchwork #variquoise #jewelrymaking #jewelrydesign #riojeweler #instasmithy #ladysmith #metalsmith #silversmith #handmadejewelry

This one has been sitting on my bench for months. I am finally committing to getting this cuff going. Now that I think about it...it is the first cuff I have made this year. These take some time to create. I treat these big cuffs like oil paintings. Adding layers as I go till it is just right. This one has a beautiful Australian #variquoise cab that my rock buddy Stan cut and polished. Onward and upward with this one. #wip #workinprogress #benchwork #riojeweler #jewelrydesign #jewelrymaking #metalsmith #silversmith #rachelmpost

...time to add Variquoise (variscite and turquoise hybrid) to the list of gems that are literally the names of gems that make them up smashed together, now joining Ametrine (amethyst and citrine) and Azurmalachite (azurite and malachite)
