"Vannozza was undoubtedly of great beauty and had ardent passions, along with intellect. In written instruments of that time, she is explicitly called Madonna Vannozza de casa Catanei, and writers of that day also referred to her as Rosa and Catarina. After 1482, Rodrigo's passion for this woman, who was about forty, faded, but he continued to honor her as the mother of his children and as the confidant of many of his secrets." — Lucretia Borgia According to Original Documents and Correspondence of Her Day (Ferdinand Gregorovius)

"Lucrezia received the news of her mother’s death while she was acting as regent. After giving orders that no one was to speak of it to her, she sought refuge in San Bernardino. “She will not speak of it in case she disturbs the state. She will wear her mourning alone,” said one of the courtiers. The loss of her mother was painful, not because she had been close to her, but because she hadn’t. “Your happy and unhappy mother,” Vannozza had signed herself. Happy to have a daughter who was Duchess of Ferrara, unhappy to have had to give her up when she was little more than a baby, and unhappier still to have outlived three sons. All this Lucrezia would understand as she reflected upon her mother’s life. But she could not mourn her as she had mourned Alexander, for she had never really known her and had so few memories on which to base her grief. What she must have mourned instead was the passing of the last member of her original family and the feeling of unutterable aloneness this gave her." — Emma Lucas, Lucrezia Borgia (2014)

i love how both vannozza and juan are the family's reminiscing idealists. vannozza wants to believe that the family is ruled by love rather than ambition and views the past through a romanticized lens because she values family ties. on the other hand juan yearns for a perfect world where his family is harmonious, his parents are proud of him, his brother respects him as an equal, and his sister is a madonna-like figure whom he must preserve...which is funny considering they're both aware of their reality!! but vannozza holds onto nostalgia while juan attempts to force his ideal vision onto reality.

"Vannozza breathed her last at Rome, 26 November 1518, at the age of seventy-six. She was buried with conspicuous honours 'almost like a Cardinal' in the Church of Santa Maria del Popolo, near her son, the Duke of Gandia." — Mathew Arnold (The Life and Times of Rodrigo Borgia)

vannozza should've whispered in his ear that two of their sons had incestuous feelings for their daughter and that one of them had incestuous feelings for their brother also just to plant the idea in his head or something because I know she knew
rodrigo is kinda slow because he could've solved all his problems by allowing an incestuous polyamorous marriage sanctioned by the vatican so he would not have encountered any issues from his three psychosexually obsessed offspring or his two mistresses
