It's me, literally sprinting into your Asks! â€ïž
Can we have a taste of:
Ethan/Casey
Mr. & Mrs. Ramsey
OPH Cancer (I hope it is not what I think it is!)
Thank you! đ„°
Lin! Eep!đ Thank you so much for sending me the Ask for the WIP game! I'm so nervous, but hopefully something will pique your interesting. lol
Also, keep in mind: these titles are awful. They're almost like my own personal titles to remind me of the fics, so hopefully they haven't been too misleading. LOL
Warning: Long Post...
Ethan/Casey
Someone sent me an Ask last week about Ethan and Tatum's attraction if Ethan was still with Casey when Tatum was hired, and then someone (maybe the same person) asked if I could write something about that. Well, this got away from me, and I developed this AU of my HC, and I'm hoping to have this as a miniseries for October! Here's a snippet:
"And over here are the charts of the new arrivals," Casey pivots back to her new batch of interns. Her arms are outstretched as if she's the Vanna White of medicine, guiding them on a tour of the emergency room. "Remember, folks, every patient needs to be triagedâ" she freezes as she watches a familiar tall blonde at the nurse's station, thumb through all the charts. "Um⊠they need to be triaged within thirty minutes," she hurries through her instructions before holding up a finger. "Just a minute, guys."
Casey walks up to the desk, inquisitively observing the woman. Even under the fluorescent lights, her platinum highlights perfectly shine, her waves bouncing effortless on her shoulders. Her scarlet wrap dress hugs her curves beautifully, and her patent-leather nude pumps show off the musculature of her calves, those thick thighs, andâ
The stranger clears her throat, Casey painfully aware of the warm flush crawling across her cheeks as her eyes dart from the shapely woman's backside to her face.
Without looking facing towards the diagnostician, the curious stranger continues to pull folders. "I'll be done in a minute," she nods to the registration desk, "you can finish undressing me with your eyes over there.â
Does she not remember me?

Mr. & Mrs. Ramsey
Did you ever see Mr. & Mrs. Smith with Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt? Long story short, they are a married couple who have no clue that the other has a secret assassin life until their agencies pin them head-to-head to chase after a specific hit. In turns into a dangerously sexy good time.
With the overturning of Roe v. Wade fresh on our minds here (removing not only autonomy for women, but appropriate healthcare for women), one of my writing friends shared with me how she would love to see an AU where Tatum is this underground abortionist, secretly saving lives. I thought it was a hilariously genius idea (even though Massachusetts is luckily a more progressive state).
So for this story, it's just that. Tatum is part of an underground abortion ring, and Ethan has no idea. Not much has been written, but here's a snippet:
The sweet, maple aroma of thick-cut bacon wafts throughout the pristine townhome. As she scrambles some egg whites for herself, Tatum carefully prepares two over-easy yolks for her husband as she toasts an artisan loaf for their breakfast.
âMmmm,â Ethan bounds into the kitchen, a sports coat tucked over his forearm. âSomething smells delicious in here.â He hastily grabs his mug of brewed coffee, but stops for a brief moment to brush a peck on his wifeâs cheek while she carefully shimmies his delicate eggs onto a plate.
âWould you like for me to butter your toast, sweetheart?â She sweetly croons, a doting smile warming her early-morning expression.
âI think I can manage that, thank you, darling.â Ethan collects his plate, stealing the delivered morning newspaper and hoarding it under his arm. Making himself comfortable at the breakfast nook on the island of the kitchen, he takes a bite of bacon before fanning out the oversized-paper to catch up with the news.
Tatum quietly fixes her coffee, but as she stirs in her hazelnut creamer, a large bold font on the front page startles her: Feds Confirm Underground Abortion Ring in Kinsington County; GOP Outraged. She coolly takes a sip of her smooth Arabica roast, her eyes shifting from the headline to Ethan, and then back again. âHow are your eggs, sweetheart?â
âPerfect,â he answers, his eyes trained to the text before looking up to give her an appeasing smile. Â
âPerfect,â she offers an ostensible grin.
~đ€~
OPH Cancer
Unfortunately, this is exactly what you think it is. There was a prompt going around several months ago about "My love comes with a lifetime guarantee" ... and because I'm me, this angst was born from it.
This is from the POV of Tatum. It's several months after she gives birth, and she finds a lump in her breast. I haven't written much of this one either, but here's a snippet:
I get it.Â
Physicians like myself go to great lengths to create safe spaces, special offices developed to establish a calm atmosphere for effective communication while discussing emotional health concerns. These meeting rooms are ideal when patients and loved ones need to make tough, well-thought out medical decisions. You know the type: a comfortable chaise lounge; soft sounds from a noise machine, like a babbling brook or a rainstorm; low and soothing ambient lightingânone of the fluorescent bullshit that makes you look sick.
Because you are sick.
But, beyond the perfectly polished wood, the infusion of essential oils in the air and the crisp cucumber water for enjoyment, being in this seat, the patientâs seat, is terrifying.
~đ€~
Thanks again, girlie!

This Week in Caps: Week 14
Welcome to This Week in Caps, a weekly newsletter where I recap everything important thatâs been going on in the world of the Washington Capitals this past week.
This Weekâs Games
12/31/18 vs Nashville Predators, L 3-6
Itâs a matinee game for the last game of 2018. Sit down with some brunch, itâs time for some hockey. Oh, and Brooks Orpik was back, after being gone with injury since late October.
The Caps got up to a pretty good lead early. Just four minutes into the game, Michal Kempny took a shot from the point off a faceoff that gave the Caps a 1-0 lead. Four minutes later, Jakub Vrana banked in a beautiful pass from a falling-down John Carlson, and the lead was 2-0. The Predators got one back twenty seconds later when Rocco Grimaldi got a crazy-looking deflection, and it was 2-1. Things got weird in the second. Eight minutes into the frame, Braden Holtby sent a stretch pass to Devante Smith-Pelly, who tapped it to Chandler Stephenson for the 3-1 goal. Holtby notched his second assist of the year.
It was all downhill from there for the Caps. Miikka Salomaki tapped it in just a minute later to make it 3-2. Two minutes after that, Ryan Johansen tucked in a rebound to tie the game 3-3. And two minutes after that, Frederick Gaudreau fluttered in another rebound, and the Predators went up 4-3. And it didnât get better in the third. Halfway through that frame, Ryan Ellis got a goal from the point, and with just two minutes to go, Viktor Arvidsson dunked home a goal on a two-man advantage, and the Preds were up 6-3. They would win the game 6-3.
The Caps were outshot, 34-25, and had the faceoff disadvantage at 41.4%. The Caps were 0/1 on the power play, and the Predators were 1/3 on theirs. Holtby saved 28/34 shots.
The Caps started off very strong, but they lost all control after the Stephenson goal. It was just messy, and an unfortunate way to end a fabulous 2018.
01/03/19 @ St. Louis Blues, L 2-5
The Caps started 2019 on a three-game road trip, beginning in St. Louis. They got a great present for the new year with the return of Matt Niskanen, who missed the last two with an upper body injury. The Caps hoped to get 2019 off with a bang against one of the worst teams in the league.
It did not get off to a great start. Four minutes into the game, Robert Thomas deflected a shot from the point, and the Blues went up 1-0. But the Caps got one late in the period when Alex Ovechkin rocketed home the puck to score his league-leading 30th goal of the season and tying the game 1-1.
Things started to get heated in the second period. Just two minutes into the period, Tom Wilson and Robert Bortuzzo got into a heavyweight fight; both players had committed infractions in the preseason that left members of the otherâs team injured to start the season, and both had a nice sit in the box after the fight. One minute later, the Caps took the lead; Brett Connolly toe dragged and got a shot on goal, eventually poking home the rebound for the 2-1 score. But that would be all for the Caps. Ten minutes later on a Blues power play, defenseman Colton Parayko snuck in from the point and scored to tie the game 2-2. Four minutes after that, Oskar Sundqvist tucked home a rebound to make it 3-2 Blues.
Things did not get better for the Caps in the third. Five minutes into the frame, Blues captain Alex Pietrangelo scored from the point to make it 4-2. And five minutes after that, Tyler Bozak snatched a Caps turnover and scored on a breakaway chance, making it 5-2. The Blues would win by that score.
The Caps were outshot, 42-25, and completely obliterated on faceoffs, winning only 31.9%. The Caps went 0/3 on power play chances, and the Blues went 1/4 on theirs. Braden Holtby saved 37/42 shots.
This was another ugly game for the Caps, who lost control of play after the Connolly goal. This game was also chippy and heated and filled with multitudes of penalties on either side. And despite many power play and shorthanded chances, the Caps just couldnât convert on anything, nor could they seem to get any shots on net. Lucky for them, they had a quick turnaround, and the next game was the next day.
01/04/19 @ Dallas Stars, L 1-2 (OT)
Itâs possibly the most dreaded night of the season: the trip to Dallas, where the Caps have not won in regulation since 1995. Yeah, the team has gotten some wins recently against the Stars, but they remain the bane of their existence and are well in the head of the goalies, particularly Braden Holtby. Luckily, he would not be starting tonight, and it would be Pheonix Copley, who has never faced Dallas before, getting the start and hoping to break the curse of the Stars.
It took awhile for the first score, but it would be Dallas on the tally. Tyler Seguin converted on the power play, giving the Stars a 1-0 lead thirteen minutes into the frame. The Caps got their chance midway through the second period, when Lars Eller took the puck from behind the net and shoveled it in on a backhand to tie the game 1-1.
This game was absolutely stolen by both goalies. Both Copley and Anton Khudobin made save after save and were continually on the spot. Their play, along with the general tightness of the game, took their affair to overtime. After trading some good chances, Seguin dunked home the puck right in front of the net to end the game and give the Stars a 2-1 win.
The Caps outshot the Stars 37-29 and got destroyed on faceoffs, only winning 38.6%. They went 0/3 on power play chances, while the Stars went 1/3 on theirs. Copley saved 27/29 shots.
It was yet another game of unnecessary penalties and an inability to convert on the power play. But this game was close and stayed that way the entire time. But alas, the Caps could not truly break the curse of Dallas.
01/06/19 @ Detroit Red Wings, W 3-2
Hockey at an odd time of the day in an arena named after pizza? Sign me up. Get ready for some ugly hockey.
At the seven minute mark of the first, after some action at the Detroit net, Tom Wilson received a great pass from Evgeny Kuznetsov and dunked it in to give the Caps a 1-0 lead. Detroit tied it up seven minutes later as Anthony Mantha capitalized off a turnover, broke into the zone, and scored backhand five-hole on Braden Holtby. The Wings would go up seven minutes into the second frame on a great passing play, Dylan Larkin opening up Filip Hronek for the easy tap-in and a 2-1 Wings lead.
Six minutes into the third, the Capitals capitalized on another great passing play, with Alex Ovechkin sending a great pass to Travis Boyd who sent it into the open net and tied the game 2-2. And with just four minutes left in the game, Michal Kempny scored on a shot from the point to give the Caps a 3-2 lead that they somehow held onto.
The Caps had the shots advantage, 34-25, but had the faceoff disadvantage at 41.0%. Both teams were fruitless on the power play, the Caps going 0/4 and the Red Wings going 0/3. Holtby saved 23/25 shots.
This was an ugly game on both sides, and there were way too many penalties committed. And still, the power play looked abysmal and needs to get better. But regardless, the Caps got their first win of 2019, and theyâd end the road trip 1-1-1.
Current record: 25-12-4
Whatâs Going on in the World of the Caps
2019 All-Star Game Announcements
On January 2, Alex Ovechkin announced that he would not be participating in the All-Star game this year. He will likely be suspended one game, either directly before or after the break, as a result. Later that day, the full All-Star rosters came out, and both Braden Holtby and John Carlson were named to the roster for the Metropolitan division for the Capitals. This is Holtbyâs fourth straight appearance and Carlsonâs first ever appearance. However, there is still one roster spot open per division, and each team has a candidate that can be voted in via the âLast Man Inâ vote, and the Capsâ candidate is Nicklas Backstrom, so please vote for him ten times a day to go to the ASG; voting is open until January 10. And, as of January 5, as the Caps were in first place in the division at the halfway point of the season, Caps head coach Todd Reirden will coach the Metropolitan division at the All-Star Game. (x, x, x)
2019 World Juniors
The 2019 World Junior Championship is over. Finland defeated USA to earn the gold, and Russia beat Switzerland to earn the bronze. Capitals defensive prospect and 2018 first-round pick Alexander Alexeyev was part of the bronze medal-winning Russian team. Alexeyev tallied two goals (1, 2) and four assists in six games, and he ended up tied for third in scoring among WJC defensemen. Elsewhere, Capitals defensive prospect and 2018 second-round pick Martin Fehérvåry scored one goal and four assists in five games as the captain of Team Slovakia, and was named one of the top three Slovakian players of the tournament. Slovakia was eliminated by Russia in the quarterfinals. (x)
New Yearâs Eve
After their game against the Predators on Monday afternoon, a number of Capitals took part in some New Yearâs Eve festivities. The Russian Capitals (Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Dmitry Orlov, and Dmitrij Jaskin), their significant others, and Capitals prospect Ilya Samsonov, spent the night at Mari Vanna, and the group took part in much singing and dancing. Kuznetsov rapped, and Ovechkin and the crowd sung We Are the Champions. Elsewhere, a number of Caps and their significant others were partying at La Vie at the Wharf. The second group included Andre Burakovsky, Tom Wilson, John Carlson, Braden Holtby, Nic Dowd, T.J. Oshie, Michal Kempny, Jakub Vrana, Brett Connolly, and Madison Bowey. I really wish I had a copy of everyoneâs Instagram stories from that night to share with you, but I do not. Enjoy the content that I do have links to. (x, x, x, x, x, x)
Lewington to Hershey
On December 31, the Capitals sent Tyler Lewington back to the Hershey Bears to make room for Brooks Orpikâs return.
Other Miscellaneous Happenings
Ovechkin confident for new year because itâs Backstromâs number
New team photos with the Stanley Cup shared by the Keeper of the Cup
Vitek Vanecek selected to 2019 AHL All-Star Game
Mother covers childâs eyes during Wilson-Bortuzzo fight
What did T.J. say in the box?
Upcoming Events
January 10th is John Carlsonâs 29th birthday
The Capitals Wish Upon A Par charity event will be held on January 13
Player of the Week
Michal Kempny had a very strong week on the Capsâ top defensive pairing, filling in as Brooks Orpik and Matt Niskanen were out and then returned from injuries. In four games this week, Kempny tallied 4 points (2 G, 2 A), had a +2 rating, and averaged 19:36 TOI. His goal in Detroit was the game-winning goal, and the only game-winning goal for the Caps this week.
Social Media Post of the Week
Alex Ovechkin and Braden Holtby caught up with former Capitals teammate Mike Knuble after the game in Detroit. (x, x)

I guess thereâs this song.. and one more by him that I heard and I was hooked... back then my ideas on love were negative. I knew what my mom and dad did and I thought love was dead. The first boy I had ever been in love with cheated on me with a thuggish girl.. told me I was too soft.. said I wasnât worth the year and 9 months he spent with me. In a weird way I wanna day it broke me but I didnât have a song to put it to.. other than âIâve given up on you by Real friends.â It was the only way I could identify it being over. Iâm sure I cried over him. Iâm almost positive I still had hope I was capable of loving rightly. Every guy after him though was just a game.. and they always cheated on me and Iâd move on like it didnât happen. My first abusive relationship happened when I was 12.. he would hit me and I accepted it but I knew I didnât love him. I dated Angel C.. and heâs the one who made flowers bloom in my head and heart... then when we were freshman he did what he did and I think it was the first time I was actually sad I lost someone romantically. I moved on and played games with other boys. Andrew V.. used to hit me and emotionally abuse me and manipulate me into feeling like I absolutely needed to isolate myself. He shows me Chance the Rapper but I never correlated the music with him. I didnât love him I just loved the freedom I felt with him... and the fear probably excited me back then because I hadnât experienced anything. I was 15... going on 16. I dated De... and that was just a poor excuse but this was during the summer where I got to experience freedom for real.. my mom gave me up. Dropped me... and I got to skate all day and night and I spent days with him. I knew I wasnât in love but I know that when I think about him âLet it go by James Bayâ plays in my head.. heâs the silent breeze that creases your face. Makes you wanna chance the sun or stars.. he makes living feel like the spiritual feeling exists. But heâs not a good lover. Heâs a friend and thatâs it.. until he can find another emotonally depending human just like himself.. a level of clingy I canât reach.. but never in his life would he hit me. The next big I dated was my current boyfriend Guillermo.. it didnât last because we were together the whole school year but after May ended I realized he wasnât going to text me back so we just fell off. Never actually said it was over but both knew we were done. I dated Tyler.. Tyler was scary and worse than any other boy I had dated.. on purpose made me feel small and spat me out and chewed me up.. hurt me.. actually.. when I think about him I feel cold.. like although we playing during that summer.. I was stuck in winter with him.. âBloom by The Paper Kitesâ was probably the only song I felt but not because I felt love... I felt like love was far away and distant from me.. and that it was leaving me in a nasty haze of craze.. I wanted to be something to him but the more I tried the less interested I became.. he said that I shouldâve killed myself a lot. Wouldnât let me text anyone. Always on the phone even when I was at school when it finally came back around.. I shook under the pressure of him.. I was walking on eggshells but I didnât do much else.. I called it off one day and blocked him. I got texts from our mutual friends saying how I owe him. I owe no man a damn thing especially when Iâve given my fucking all. I was the beautiful ripe age of 16 when I made that choice. I wonât put his name in this for personal reasons but my ex.. I dated him before I got back with Guillermo.. but we broke up because he cheated on me with her. And I didnât have the energy. So âI donât love you anymore by Real Friendsâ was his song. I would play it every time he sat next to me or made excuses to try and touch me. Someone told her he cheated on her with me and i was livid because it was the opposite but I just decided whatever they chose to say is what will be. He told her sorry as if he actually did it that way but never apologized to me. But I kept it bottled. I dated Guillermo again once I was 17
Thereâs still no song to match the love or the break up. It was mutual yet again an understanding but I know I would cry to the sad songs on the radio and on my phone but none of them were actually reserved for him. So.. I dated Dominic. I know I dated way too much for someone so young but I was still trying to test waters and see if my affection was real.. or if I was just like my mom. âFlower (Acoustic) By Vanna.â Was his song.. I had fallen in love with him quickly.. I hadnât even noticed at first. But once I heard this song I cried because I knew that everything was biased and placed around him. I loved him. I was too young and too foolish. I donât like people who try to fix me so when we broke up... I didnât have a song for him. I just said âI donât want to say I loved you enough to waste my timeâ but I did. I loved him so deeply.. he cheated on me too and I didnât feel much towards it. It meant nothing. Senior year I dated my ex. I didnât listen to music as much. Actually I would only play âRelax and focusâ music.. it had scared me. I guess this time around I had decided that âI know itâs over By The Smithsâ was the song I wanted to put labeled on out âloveâ but I wasnât sure if I had loved him still. It was just convenient. He cheated on me yet again and I took some time from dating. I just hung out with my friends.. I guess this is when I found âOcean of Stars by Demxntiaâ and I had wanted to be in love with someone so much that this had its own happiness around it.. but all yeh boys asking werenât worth the ache and I wasnât about to be stupid again. So I had given myself time and only hung out with people inside and outside of school.. Guillermo quickly became my favorite again.. weâd do homework together and laugh.. and weâd see movies.. take naps in his car. Go out to eat. During lunch weâd go check on his dog and mine. I didnât realize that it was going to happen but one day while he was walking around market street with me he held my hand quickly and said âI have to tell you somethingâ and I still didnât have a song to dedicate to this poor boy.. at least not yet.. âAnother you by Of Mice and Menâ played one day while I was crying for my dad.. and i realized I wasnât crying over him anymore... I was crying over you. I dated that ex again.. the stupid fool in me expected it to be okay and work out but it didnât.. and I dated Dominic again but you could never love these people.. ever again.. after the ache.. and i realized although I had lived dominic undoubtedly I didnât love t-him in that way. Then I found âThe words I shouldâve said by Demxntiaâ and I had thought about you.. Guillermo.. and I realize all these songs Iâve dedicated to other boys hadnât even been the words I wanted to give them.. they just were the words I couldnât find in myself to give to you.. they were the awkward declarations I couldnât give to you yet because we never broke each other.. but the time we did... I did regret it. I loved you. This was the first time we left and it wasnât mutual or understood- it was angry. The only time I had felt hurt by you. I didnât need to give you songs back then. Didnât need to label you or stamp you.. you were my forever and I shouldâve saw that.. you were the only decent one.. all the love songs I gave them were songs I wanted to scream at you.. and when we finally started talking again... I felt so relieved.. I didnât think things would go back to normal but when they did.. when you said you loved me.. I couldnât be anymore grateful. I know itâs late and Iâm making a stupid music post about my dumb history.. but I took so long to figure out who I really am. Way too long to figure out if I was able to love or not.. and I have.. and I carry them with me always but I sometimes skip the songs because I donât accept broken hearts anymore. I just want to feel like I exist in joy... and youâve done that. And Iâve worked hard to get here.

In Myanmar, One Girlâs Plight Epitomizes Rohingya Struggle
AP, July 5, 2017
DAR PAING, Myanmar--Ever since she was born in a squalid displaced camp for Myanmarâs ethnic Rohingya minority that authorities wonât let anyone leave, Rosmaida Bibi has struggled to do something most of the worldâs children do effortlessly: grow.
Frail and severely malnourished, she looks a lot like every other underfed child here--until you realize sheâs not really like any of them at all.
A tiny girl with big brown eyes, Rosmaida is 4--but barely the size of a 1-year-old.
She wobbles unsteadily when she walks. Bones protrude through the flimsy skin of her chest. And while other kids her age chatter incessantly, Rosmaida is listless, only able to speak a handful of first words: âPapa.â âMama.â âRice.â
Half a decade after a brutal wave of anti-Muslim violence exploded in this predominantly Buddhist nation in June 2012, forcing more than 120,000 Rohingya Muslims into a series of camps in western Myanmar, this is what the governmentâs policy of persecution, segregation and neglect looks like up close.
Itâs a policy born of decades of military dictatorship and fear that Muslims are encroaching on what should be Buddhist land. The troubling thing today, rights groups say, is that this stance has been adopted by the administration of Aung San Suu Kyi, the Nobel Peace laureate and longtime opposition leader who rose to power after her party swept national elections last year.
And any hope that Suu Kyi--once lauded worldwide as a human rights icon--might turn things around has been shattered by her silence and the reality that life for the Rohingya has deteriorated by the day.
âThis is worse than a prison,â Rosmaidaâs 20-year-old mother, Hamida Begum, said of the makeshift hut they call home--the place where her daughter was born that floods with every heavy rain.
Poor, unemployed, and prohibited from crossing checkpoints into more affluent Buddhist-only areas, Begum has been unable to find anyone who can help.
âI want to give her an education. I want to send her to school like all the other kids,â she said as Rosmaida burrowed into her lap in Dar Paing, near the state capital, Sittwe. But âshe is sick ... she cannot grow.â
The Rohingya, a Muslim ethnic group, have long been denied citizenship, freedom of movement and basic rights in Myanmar, a country that largely sees them as foreigners from neighboring Bangladesh even though most were born here.
Although tensions in Rakhine state go back decades, the neighborhood Begum grew up in in Sittwe was mixed, and she said people there used to get along.
That changed dramatically on June 5, 2012, when Buddhist mobs began attacking Muslims and setting homes ablaze. Begum fled, running barefoot so hard and so fast she realized only later that her feet were covered in blood.
Today her neighborhood--where denuded trees and the destroyed remains of homes are still visible--is occupied by Buddhist squatters. Although Begum said her grandparents owned their familyâs house there, they have neither been allowed to return nor compensated for its destruction.
Aside from a single district, Sittwe is now entirely Buddhist, and Muslims are prohibited from walking its streets.
Suu Kyi has denied such policies equate to ethnic cleansing, but international rights groups insist thatâs exactly what they are. Suu Kyiâs office did not respond to repeated requests for comment.
Matthew Smith, who runs the advocacy group Fortify Rights, said, âItâs scandalous that these internment camps still exist five years on ... The reality is that thereâs a lot she (Suu Kyi) could be doing, but isnât.
âThe Rohingya are no closer now to getting their rights ... and in some respects the situation is much worse,â he said. Over the last year, âthereâs been mass killing, mass rape, widespread forced labor and other violations, all committed with complete impunity.â
After a Rohingya insurgent group killed nine officers in northern Rakhine state in October --the first reported attack of its kind--security forces responded by burning entire villages, raping women and killing an unknown number of people in a rampage that sent 75,000 people fleeing into neighboring Bangladesh, according to the United Nations and international rights groups. The government puts the death toll at 52 dead or missing and blames extremists for the killings.
Although southern Rakhine state, where Rosmaida lives, was not directly affected, the region has experienced a spike in tensions. On Tuesday, a 100-strong Buddhist mob in Sittwe killed one Rohingya man and injured six others who ventured into the city under police escort to buy boats.
Suu Kyi says her administration is dealing with the issue by implementing the recommendations of a commission led by former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, which called on the government to close the displaced camps and allow their inhabitants to return home.
Most of the camps remain open, though, and Suu Kyiâs administration restricts access to the region, blocking journalists from independent access to the north altogether. Last week, her government said it would also bar members of a U.N.-approved fact-finding mission from entering the country to investigate alleged rights violations by security forces against the Rohingya.
Vanna Sara, a Buddhist abbot at Sittweâs Seik Ke Daw Min monastery, said harsh policies were necessary to protect Buddhists. Western Myanmar is on the frontline of a population explosion, and Muslims, he said, are trying to âswallow the whole region.â
âThey canât be trusted. No Muslim can be trusted. Theyâre all scary,â Sara said. âThatâs why, to tell you the truth, itâs better that we donât live with the Muslims. Thatâs how we feel.â
When Begum settled in Dar Paing after the 2012 violence, she tried to start her life anew. But her tragic story has mirrored that of many Rohingya. The man she married died shortly after he was detained in Malaysia, where he was trying to bring their family for a better life. Their son died a few hours after birth.
Begum has since remarried, but her fisherman husband sometimes comes home from a day of work with less than a dollar, or nothing. That makes it hard to care for her biggest concern--her daughter--who is lucky just to be alive.
A report issued by UNICEF in May said a staggering 150 children under the age of 5 die every day in Myanmar, while nearly 30 percent are malnourished. Although the U.N. does not have specific statistics for the camps, half of whose inhabitants are children, aid workers say the situation inside them is even worse.
Begum has taken her daughter to local clinics half a dozen times, but her condition has never improved.
Rosmaida is now being helped by an international humanitarian charity which is giving her ready-to-eat packets of therapeutic food paste to alleviate severe acute malnutrition, which the World Health Organization describes as âa life threatening condition requiring urgent treatment.â
But Begum is concerned because her daughterâs appetite is so low, âshe has trouble eating all of them.â
Twice a day, she takes her daughterâs hand and walks her through Dar Paingâs labyrinth corridors, a place Rosmaida has lived in her entire life.
Itâs hard, she says, because Rosmaidaâs tiny joints often hurt. She canât walk far, and sheâs never been able to run.
Soon, Begum will have another reason to worry: She is pregnant again.
