Some Win or Lose things on my mind:

- in Frank’s episode when he’s texting the girl he met online right before his ex is about to walk in, the blaring alarm going off. Like.. as a viewer I understand it as a warning that *something* is about to happen. (That something being the sudden appearance of Monica). But it was the first time we saw a story telling element like that. The whole thing with Frank’s episode was focused on armor, vivid flashbacks and video game animation for the dating app. So the red flashing alarm confused me for a bit. At first I didn’t know if it was a real alarm going off in the school or a narrative device 💀

- Some people theorize that the woman Frank was texting was Vanessa’s mom??? I didn’t get that impression at all and rewatching the show I still don’t see any signs point to that??

- so does Tom lowkey have a crush on Rochelle? Based on the convo with her mom

- Very specific but I like that we see some of the parents calling it baseball when it’s softball 💀 it just seems like an accurate parent slip to make

- the job interview where Zane attacks the guy after saying “so uh, how flexible are you 😏” didn’t expect that at all but it really be like that irl

- now I know Kai’s story was supposed to focus on her experience transitioning but the creators had to scrap that main story and opted to represent it in a more subtle fashion. Idk how much of that episode was cut/edited and rewritten but when it comes to the scenes of her scratching off what presumably was her deadname on her old glove and her looking fondly at her new one that says “Kai” some people thought that the last episode was the first time James called her Kai. Cause like Kai’s story relies on the dynamic between her and her father and whether or not he accepts her. But actually he already calls her that at the start of her episode. So I’m wondering if maybe some clarity was lost with her timeline because the creators had to switch up the focal point of story.

- Rinna always going off to Brian in Korean? 💀💀 does Brian understand Korean????

- Frank being Rochelle’s favorite teacher, and Rochelle being Frank’s favorite student confirmed 🥹

- there’s an awkward pause when Rochelle is venting to Laurie. The: “do I look buff? Girl yes have you been juicing?! No….” And then there’s a beat of silence lmaoo. What was that??

- okay so the last episode showed the final inning, they’d already had 2 outs and needed a win. Laurie avoided striking out and causing them that 3rd out by making base and then Kai sadly got out after her and everyone lost their minds. So I thought that was the end of the game??? But after everyone calms down they get back on the field to continue the play?? We don’t on screen confirmation of who won the championship but like?? Do I just not know softball cause if that was the final out in the final inning….doesn’t that mean the game is over??

- okay so yeah middle schoolers think high schoolers are cool but like does Rochelle lowkey have a crush on that one highschool girl we saw???

- why is Rochelle’s episode called raspberry? I get the others but hers is going over my head

- in Vanessa’s episode she has her own little driving service Van’s Van and we see Francis as a passenger in one of the montages. Now I’ve been seeing people say Francis was apart of Frank’s imagination so does this prove he’s real?

- so the bleacher creatures bait Rochelle to try and get her keys to the snack shack but like what was their plan??? They say let us borrow your keys and then we give them back with your $200 bucks and that’s all….soooo did they actually have $200 bucks to pay her or were they planning on stealing the money she needed from her OWN JOB to give to her??? But that doesn’t make sense. Were they never intending to pay her at all?? Cause they get the keys anyway and we see in the end they were just gonna steal the cash box before Ira takes it and runs. What were they gonna do with the money?

- I loved seeing the bleacher creatures’ friendship with Ira before the end 🥺 like they actually listened to him and let him be himself. As a weird kid and the youngest sibling, that’s all we be wanting

- the barista purposely looking Frank straight in the eyes as she says “he’s like a brother to me you guys” 😭😭😭

Watching how drawn out and emotional Laurie's scene is with Dan during the championship compared to the rather short and sweet version in dan's episode really interests me. I don't know whether to interpret that as something sad or happy. Like oh my gosh! That's so cute that Laurie got so much out of the conversation despite Dan not really saying much, his words mean a lot to her! Or, oh wow Laurie may feel so depraved of genuine support she took that interaction as something so much bigger than what it actually was.

Also fuck you kai's dad for not putting Laurie in the line up like Bruh you're putting too much pressure on your OWN daughter now ur kicking off Laurie and tryna replace Dan like die (JK I know he's not bad...but still)

Making another post actually, because all of the symbolism in Win or Lose is amazing.

Having anxiety be a creature that just grows and grows, and eats away and crushes Laurie down until she can't speak or walk like she used to? Having Laurie's dad always be under the sun, or some kind of light to signify that while Laurie is religious, and looks up to god, what she's really looking to is her father?

The way armour is necessary for some jobs - Frank need to be able to take criticism, and still stick firm to what he knows is true, - and that relief of taking it off? And when it bleeds into personal life, what can he even do? When he's been heart, because he can't open up, doesn't that just make it harder to shed that in the first place?

And then Ira, whose perspective reminds me a lot of Captain Underpants, and is so, so sweet. He's just a little kid, and a little weird, and he just wants friends who like him for that! And he wants his big sister to like him, and spend time with him! And he's so imaginative, the scribbly, cartoon style of his little world he spies through? I was just in love. The fact that he kept picturing the teenagers as super heros and rebels and good guys- and just the fact that he sounds like a kid! Are you kidding, that autraulian joke? I laughed so hard because I've heard kids talk like that, that's what shy, caring little kids sound like when they've been shot down before!

Yuwen's mini me inside his heart screaming like me!!, the version of him he doesn't let out, because it's cardboard and flimsy and so easy to crush. I'm really amazed at the way they portrayed Yuwen and Taylor, because i remember being in middleschool, and while I never dated (cough cough aroace), the depiction of them "picking out curtains and moving in" feels so real, because I do believe that's what love will always feel like, no matter the age. Being in middleschool doesn't mean the love isn't true, or isn't there just because it's not likely to last. And the way they depicted kissing, not by showing them kiss, but by showing what it felt like? I was amazed. Baffled. I can't believe I haven't seen more things like that.

(It's actually incredibly interesting to me, that 2/3 main male characters shown so far, have gimmicks of protection. Protecting themselves, their emotions, and who they are as a person, because they feel they can't be open and honest, they feel they can't trust their emotions to guide them.)

I talked about Rochelle and her mom in a seperate post, but the gasp I let out when I realized Rochelle's gravity was weird because she didn't have the stable force of a mom? Oh my god. Rochelle feels like her family is upside down, that she has to be the adult, and because of that, every force in her life is turned upside. She has no one to rely on and nothing to ground her, until her mom is finally there for her, no phone in hand at the end of episode 4. Gravity rights itself because her mom is there, fully present, to help her.

The way they contrasted Rochelle's episode's mood with her mom's was fantastic, because her mom's felt like a performance. She's performing, always, because she doesn't know how to be otherwise! She performs being a good mom and performs being happy for her audience, and even performs at the party, wether she wants to or not! That was an audience! And everything about her performance has bleeded into the way she sees the world, how everything's pink and sparkling and upbeat. It's only when she finds Rochelle do we see her not performing, we get to see, for the first time, who Vanessa is for just Rochelle. For just her family.

I'm so invested, so obsessed, SO READY FOR THE NEXT TWO EPISODES!!

(As a sidenote, if you haven't seen the storyboards of the cut trans scene, here's a link to the internet archive of them. I can't find them anywhere else. But the Picasso style falling apart, the shattering and splitting of identity, because Kai is scared, and has to act both parts and it's confusing and hurting her and oh- it really just punches me in the gut.

You know, I laugh at Vanessa losing it and smashing her frickin' face in through a closed door, but think about...the implications.

Vanessa is thirty and her daughter is twelve to thirteen years old. That means Vanessa likely had her at the age of eighteen or seventeen, meaning it's more than likely that Vanessa was a teen pregnancy. And she, of all people, knows what happens behind closed doors. Given how it's a big thing that Vanessa wants her daughter to make better choices and be a great young lady, her reaction is more than Vanessa "having a mom moment." That's her making sure her precious young baby isn't doing anything TOO bad and VERY MUCH TOO SOON. So while I laugh, I still feel her worry.

Ok so I just gotta spout off about my newest obsession but guys.. have y’all SEEN WIN OR LOSE?!? Honestly best show I’ve watched for a WHILE so much rewatch ability because every time, you notice something different. UGHhhhhh I LOVE THE THIRD AND FOURTH EPISODES WITH ALL MY HEART

The one scene when Rochelle sees her mom as self obsessed and talking to her followers when in reality IT WAS HER LOSING HER JOBBb!?!? MY HEART! Also the scene where she is waiting for her mom to pick up at the end of the third episode? I was literally about to cry. The third episode might just be my favorite but tbh it isn’t by far. That’s DEFINITELY not a knock on it it’s just that every episode is brimming with so much LIFE AND CREATIVITY. I JUST WANNA RUN AROUND WITH THE SHOW IN MY TEETH LIKE A DOG WITH A CHEW TOY ARGGGGHGGHKNJVTYJdksnsjJsuhxjzkzjs

I have rewatched those two episodes like five times and now I might do a sixth or seventh or eight before the clock strikes midnight. I honestly just want a second season with all my heart or anything more like this
