I listened to JFSP S9 again, partly to prep to write a possibly ill-conceived crossover fic but mostly because I just wanted to, and I'm still not over it
There's always something different that gets me, and I think this time it might have been Walter and Vanessa on the train to Lyon and the way that it presages/reflects how they'll (each, and together) deal with Walter's blindness later on

So I wrote a fic for John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme s9...
It's about Newt and Vanessa because they are, as it says in the tags, wonderful.
TW for grief and character death.

The Masked Singer: S9 E8 (Warner Brothers Movie Night) Commentary
Watching on a DVR delay tonight, but as always, I post before seeing any unmaskings, so don’t take these guesses as spoilers.
Doll 👧: So, some are suggesting that this is actually an ‘80s rock star. Doll’s speaking voice sounds like he has a New York/New Jersey accent. A kiss 💋 landing on the cheek of a Man in Black and a heart-shaped lollipop. He sounds like Dee Snider from Twisted Sister (and I think he’s from New Jersey), but the kiss clue could also indicate that it could be either Paul Stanley or Gene Simmons from KISS. The bonus clue is a guitar case reading “King Status”. The lollipop clue could indicate the KISS album Lick It Up, and if I had to guess that it’s a member of KISS under the mask, it’d probably be Gene Simmons, because Paul Stanley doesn’t really sound that raspy when he sings. The voice is more Dee Snider, but the clues point more towards Gene Simmons.
Dandelion 🍃: References The Wizard of Oz. Has been in entertainment since childhood, and has performed with Madonna and Flea. Seemingly moved to a “Music City”, which suggests Nashville. The voice kind of sounds familiar, but I can’t pinpoint. Like, she sounds like Vanessa Williams, but I don’t know if she has Nashville connections, and she didn’t rise to fame until she won Miss America in the mid-1980s as a young woman. The bonus clue is a tag reading “Billboards”, and she apparently charted next to Olivia Rodrigo. Going on the voice alone, I’m gonna go with Vanessa Williams for now.
Mantis 🐛: This Mantis is dressed like The Fonz! 😂 “Known for his brooding persona.” Carrying a guitar, has been nominated for at least one Emmy Award and is good at comedy. He’s a published author, “has done Shakespeare”, so maybe he’s known for his work in theater? Holding a howling wolf plushie. Dang it, most of what I had written here got eaten by the draft. But anyway, my guess is that it’s Andy Samberg, who worked with Wolf 🐺 (Michael Bolton) on a song with his comedy group The Lonely Island. The trio has also been nominated for several Emmys (winning one), and Andy did a spoof of a biopic called Pop Star: Never Stop Never Stopping. Kevin Bacon is also a good guess, but Mantis sounds much younger than most of the judges’ guesses.

i would like to hear your honest opinion do you think that since a few seasons (seasons 8, 9 and 10 1/2) PD has become boring in terms of story and writing and in general?
Short Answer: Definitely! They have lost their creativity and intensity. In the past seasons, every episode brought us to the edge of our seats. But now, both the cases are boring, and the personal stuff is getting repetitive.
Long Answer:
You probably didn't ask for a rant, but I'm giving it to you anyways. Sorry in Advance! 😊
To be honest, S8, as a whole, wasn't that bad. The Upstead stuff was amazing. Kim's story with Makayla was really sweet and meaningful for the character. I liked Kevin's storyline at the beginning and how the Doyle shooting was wrapped up. But I didn't like how every Kevin episode was about the blue wall and his race. Vanessa's sudden disappearance is something that still bothers me, but I guess we have to blame COVID for that. The cases were interesting and intense at the same time. And although it was a character-centric format, I really think the balance between personal and case was good. And let's not forget the epic finale they had. In my opinion, the best finale PD has ever done.
For S9, you have to evaluate it as two parts, 9a, and 9b. 9a was really good. The continuation of the Roy storylines was perfect, and the end, even though it felt a little anticlimactic with North's character, was a decent wrap to the storyline. The Upstead angst was worth it. The flow was starting to become choppy, but since the content was so good, I ignored it.
9b, on the other hand, was just a disappointment. Anna was introduced in 9a, and I still don't understand why they couldn't wait till 9b. Her character was so confusing. I liked her sassiness and her boldness, but her relationship with both Voight and Jay was all over the place. I also don't understand what the whole point was of having Jay create "a deal" with Voight in 9x09 if he never actually followed through with it. I liked the whole Kim fighting for Makayla during the adoption, but everything after that felt pointless. Like they needed something to give Burzek a storyline. There was no reason to kidnap and traumatize a young girl who was already previously traumatized. Instead of showing Makayla recovering from her kidnapping, they should have taken those episodes to focus more on Kim and her trauma after losing her baby one season and then being shot and left to die the next. Don't get me started on Kevin and his "relationship" with Celeste. I actually thought Celeste and Kevin had great chemistry and potential, but they literally ruined it in the first episode they introduced Celeste. Kevin deserved better than that. Anna's storyline had way too much focus than it needed. It just dragged on for too long, and the finale was just sad. There was no intensity or drama. Compared to its previous finale, this one was boring. Still bitter that we never got Will and Hailey scenes in 9x13 and never got worried Jay in 9x22. Why spend so much money and time on an explosion if there is no drama afterward.
S10 so far... let's see. The Anna stuff of 10x01 felt weird. We never really saw Voight move on from Anna's death. It just felt incomplete. And somehow, all this mess led to Jay crossing lines and deciding to leave 3 episodes later. The biggest disappointment of this season is how Jay was written out. He deserved better than being given 3 episodes to exit. It was rushed, sudden, and truly unnecessary. I'm glad that Hailey is getting a lot of screentime, but I'm not glad that all her screentime is sad Hailey on repeat. The acting is superb, but come on, stop finding more ways to make her sad. I'm not gonna dig into Burzek's situation, and how I feel about that. All I'll say is I just hope they stay like this. Torres is an interesting character, and I like his partnership with Kevin, but I do wish that they did a Torres episode before Jay's departure. Jay was the one that brought Torres to the unit; it would have been nice to see Jay help Torres fit in and slowly shift to Torres and Kevin. And I feel like it's a season too late to bring up Kim's trauma. My guess is they're gonna use this to bring Kim and Adam together, but why didn't they do it last season. I guess the only good that that's come out of S10 so far is how quiet Voight's character is. He has truly been in the background, even during the Sean/Chief stuff.
I think the big difference for me is that during S8, I was actually interested in every character's episodes. But now, I could care less what happens to everyone else. All I care about is Hailey and hoping that there is a happy ending for Upstead.

In all honesty: what do you think of the addition of Torres? because on the one hand I am curious, on the other I am afraid they will take away some time in upstead. If I think rationally I know they are married, I know they are strong and that they carry on the show, but I am also afraid that since they are now married they may want to show something else. but marriage is important to show. maybe I'm afraid because the second part of the season saw them less protagonists .. and maybe they were so much in the first part and that's why we saw them less in the second. there is cahos in my head!
Sorry this got long, so I’m putting my answer under a cut!!
I definitely understand the concerns/fears regarding adding a new character considering just how unbalanced last season was. Obviously with a new character, they’re going to take some time to fledge him out in a way that helps us connect with him and shows how he fits into the group. I wouldn’t say it’s a matter of if this will take time away from our other characters and their storylines, but a matter of how much. Realistically, they’ve gotta wiggle things around to make room for him and his story to exist among all of the other complex stories that have been vying for that same attention for seasons.
As far as how I feel about all of this, I’m trying to keep an open mind. I definitely think with the state of the world (sort of🥴), the state of filming, and Gwen getting her first full season to start fresh, that we’re venturing back into a version of the show we were used to in previous seasons. Aka more balance & more ensemble. At least I hope that’s what this season will be. I too share some of those concerns you mention. It’s a natural worry to have considering the way s9 played out, but at the same time I don’t think them introducing a new character will be the sole cause *if* there’s a lack of upstead screen time. I also don’t think their marriage is something they’re going to let fade to the background. I do have high hopes that we’ll see more of their marriage this season - and in a new way since the Roy storyline is finally wrapped up.
Something to be considered regarding new characters is that even with Vanessa’s introduction in s7, the season was arguably one of the most balanced seasons we’ve had in years. I mean, even with her splitting up upstead’s partnership the amount of upstead scenes we got that season was far from lacking (also don’t take this as me comparing Torres to Vanessa in anyway - simply just making a point abt new characters vs screen time). All of this is to say, I get the concern, I share the concern, but let’s wait it out and see what happens!! It could be the best season yet!

As I do several times a year (and yes I know it only first aired in 2021), I just listened to JFSP S9 on a three hour flight recently and oh man it is still everything I love about it.
Usually when I'm listening to Cabin Pressure or JFSP in public, the issue is laughing out of nowhere and freaking people out- in this case I wonder whether people were weirded out by me just bursting out in these enormous pure cathartic smiles every so often which I'm sure were demented-looking, or the several times I sniffled.
(Incidentally, I already start crying in that first Since You Asked Me. On my first listen when I was super skeptical, hearing "perhaps there's been a mixup" "possibly" was what first made me think "oh, okay, this is going somewhere interesting and I need to keep listening to find out what"- now every time I hear that exchange I tear up a bit. And then, and I don't take credit for this realization at all, I read it from someone else online, but the whole fact that the Since You Asked Me is about not being able to take credit for what you have created, and instead allowing someone else to take the credit because you know it will make them happy, and that being the thing that causes the narrator to call them hero turtles, and all of this is from Uncle Newt at Vanessa's funeral...! I was wiping away tears.)

@macandstella
i dont have any criticism but i do have questions lmao no actually i'd love to hear your take on this, i've never really considered it before
i have plans do a post about some missed pairings on this show once i’m done with s9.
there’s jane parsons and mac taylor. i thought they had an interesting chemistry and peyton was very similar to jane to the point of it being suspicious.
mac and stella is also something that i felt had the possibility of development if the writers had chosen to go that path. it’s near criminal that she was barely mentioned after melina’s departure. i get it but at the same time i refuse to believe stella never spoke to anyone at the crime lab ever again. her and mac were close and lindsay, danny and sheldon were her ducklings.
i also think aiden and flack had some protentional but it just never had the chance to develop due to vanessa leaving the show after s1. i do believe there’s a direct path from aiden burn to jessica angell to jaime lavato. suspiciously similar replacements.
but as for jo and flack i thought eddie and sela had a great chemistry. flack is definitely is a founding member of the new york chapter of the jo danville fanclub and jo’s playful side definitely thrives with flack’s humor. between jo with her shitty ex (i hate russ) and flack’s past trauma i think they could’ve had some healing fun. i appreciate that jo’s story never really hinged on romance it would’ve been interesting to see it. she could teach flack a thing or two ;)

Shh I’m thinking about s9 but instead of Gas-n-sip Cas is going by Steve and working At Vanessa & Barry’s flowers and they become fast friends bc they are the same brand of weird girl but like Dean shows up as he does in s9 and Vanessa is very hostile bc she thinks Dean is Cas’s Ken, but later realizes it’s more complicated than that and like there’s some subplot where she learns the supernatural is real and she takes it pretty well bc she already is okay with talking bees and finds out Cas is a former Angel and actual Dean is his Barry
