Can you imagine if they Vanessa Rojas Hailey Upton next season? Like poof, gone. Normally I’d say there’s absolutely no way, but this season has taught me to be surprised by absolutely nothing.
While I'm not sure they could get away with that with Hailey, I'm at the point where I wouldn't really be mad about it 😂

Cold as Ice - Chapter 34 - Part 1
*Warning Adult Content*
Landon Reilly
If someone asked me how I ended up in Wren's car with three of his siblings in the back seat, including one that wants to murder me, I'd have no fucking clue what to say.
I knew it was a bad idea going to this game but Coach basically made it mandatory.
He wanted us to go watch Northeastern since we were playing them tomorrow because it was a 'unique' opportunity to be able to go watch them in person right before our game with them.
Rojas and Shea dragged me there without me having much of a say anyway.
I thought I had this figured out, that I'd be able to get in and out of there without being noticed by Wren and his family but I was clearly mistaken and somehow I ended up getting roped into dinner with them.
The car ride was filled with a long, awkward silence.
I could only imagine how bad the mood would be at dinner.
I should have made up an excuse.
I should have walked away but it was too late.
Part of me didn't care about Fox knowing about us.
If he tried to fight with me, I'd just cross that bridge when I got to it but I knew it mattered to Wren for some reason, so it kind of mattered to me too by default.
Even though I knew he wasn't as serious about us as I was.
Wren was tapping on the steering wheel as he drove, a nervous tick I had only seen from him once before.
I hated that he was feeling this way because of me and there was no way for me to make it any better.
When Wren parked the car at the restaurant, Fox barely waited for the car to be fully stopped before he got out and stormed off.
Wren's other brother in the back seat, who I assumed was Robin, let out a low laugh.
"This is going to be an interesting dinner," Robin said, glancing over at his sister.
"I'm so confused about what's going on," she said.
This sister was not the one I met before at Wren's house.
"Wren, I'm sorry," I said once we were alone.
It felt strange apologizing to him, like I was begging and pleading for his forgiveness.
"What for?"
"I tried to not be seen by you guys. Coach made the whole hockey team go watch Northeastern since we're playing them tomorrow."
Wren shrugged.
"There's nothing we can do about it now."
I followed Wren as he got out of the car and walked toward the restaurant, his family already waiting inside.
I didn't know what to expect from this dinner.
Part of me thought Fox would cause a scene by the way Wren wanted to keep him in the dark about us but with the way he was in the car, glaring at us and refusing to speak, I figured it would be more of that.
Or I hoped it would.
The family was already sitting down when we got inside, leaving two seats on the end of the table for Wren and me.
Wren sat down beside Robin while I sat down next to him on the end, across from his mother.
Fox was all the way at the other end of the table, which was probably for the best.
"I'm so happy you could join us, Landon," Vanessa said, beaming at me from across the table.
"Get anything you want."
I looked down at the menu in front of me, skimming the entrees.
Everything was expensive.
Even the cheapest option was more than I wanted anyone to spend on me.
Maybe this was where Wren got his giving tendencies from.
He was always buying my coffee or my food, despite knowing I didn't want him to do that.
As if being able to sense my discomfort with the whole ordeal, Wren placed a comforting hand on my thigh, squeezing it lightly.
His touch didn't completely eradicate my nerves but it helped a little.
Wren was so confusing to me.
He acted like he cared about me, like he really wanted to be with me but he rejected the idea of coming over to the Hanson's last night and he didn't want his family to know about us.
He was just going along with what his mother wanted.
He wasn't going to introduce me as his... whatever I was to him.
To his family we were friends or even just acquaintances and Wren was probably going to try to keep it that way.
I put my hand on top of Wren's before lightly pushing it off my thigh.
Wren took his hand and gripped his menu with it, his jaw clenched but despite that, he seemed relaxed.
I didn't know what the right thing to do was, if I should let him show me the little affection he was willing to give or act like there was nothing between us.
We ordered our food and there was light conversation for most of dinner.
I spent the whole time mainly listening to Vanessa tell stories and catch Robin up on what had been going on at home while he was away from school.
It wasn't until we were finished and waiting for the check that conversation was directed toward me.
"So, Landon, you go to school with Wren?" Wren's father, Leo, asked me.
I cleared my throat.
"No, Sir. I actually go to Providence College not too far away."
"Oh, that's where Fox is playing tomorrow," Vanessa exclaimed with a smile.
I plastered a fake smile on my face.
"I... um... I play hockey there."
"Oh, you do?" Vanessa excitedly asked.
"That's wonderful, dear."
I spared a glance down at Fox.
He wasn't looking at us but he was definitely listening in.
His jaw was clenched and his hand was gripping his glass so tightly his knuckles were turning white.
It was like he was biting his tongue, forcing himself to keep quiet for his mother's sake when what he really wanted to do was cuss me out and beat me up.
I couldn't really blame him for that.
Wren's other siblings, Robin and Fawn, clearly knew what was going on and kept casting looks between us, Fox and each other.
I should have never went along with them.
I was ruining their time together as a family all because the invitation was sprung up on me and I didn't know how to get out of it in the moment.
"It's nice to have a little friendly competition," Vanessa added with a smile.
From the other end of the table, Fox laughed and now all eyes were on him.
"Mom, do you even know who he is?" Fox asked her.
"Fox, stop," Wren calmly interjected before his mother could respond.
"And you. Shut the hell up," Fox snapped, pointing at his brother.
"I don't want to hear anything from you right now."

Vanessa Rojas x Reader Midnight Memories
Summary: After a rough case where Vanessa messed up. You take her out to try and help forget about it.
It was a honest mistake that either of you could've made. Hell it was a bad call that every single person on this team had made at least once. But still it looked worse for Vanessa because she was still new to the team, and this was only her third case. Even though Hailey gave Voight a thumbs up on letting her stay. He was still trying to get a good read on her, and her future with his unit. Which meant she couldn't afford to make a bad call like this luckily for her though. Your quick thinking made up for it, and the bad guy was caught.
Although the one thing you couldn't save her from was a stern lecture from your father. You pulled Hank aside the second the team finally retuned to precinct to clean up and go home for the night. He wasn't stupid and already knew what you wanted. You were a tough detective and had seen just as many horrors as anyone else on the team, but somehow even after everything you'd been through. You still maintained your happy and cheerful personality at the core you were soft, and any time you felt like he was about to come down too hard on someone. You step in and try to soften the blow by defending the person's actions, or even throwing yourself under the bus.
"Dad listen what happened back there shouldn't just be on Rojas. She was partnered up with me and I saw how anxious she was getting. I should've stopped her or-" You tried to explain. But Hank held up his hand telling you to stop.
"I know what you're trying to do and its not going to work this time y/n. Not only did she make a bad call, but she was way out of line and ignored direct orders from her superior. You had to put yourself in the line of fire to save this case, and stop that prick from getting away. If your plan had went south you could be dead right now." He growled his voice getting louder towards the end.
"Fine you want to lecture her then go ahead, but don't dare take your anger for what I did out on her. I made that choice on my own and it worked."
"You wouldn't had to make that choice if she had followed orders." Voight shouted slamming his hand down on his desk. You flinched at his outburst which got to you no matter how many times it happened. Hank took a deep breath and walked over to take a seat in his chair. He realized that he was playing right into your plan Vanessa was going to get a lecture. No matter what but your main objective was to ensure he got the worst of it out the way. Before talking to her that way he would be more levelheaded and less emotional.
"She's still adjusting to this unit and how we do things dad. Don't run her off before she reaches her full potential" You told him.
He nodded.
It was time for you to leave and send Vanessa in to face her fate. You did exactly that warning her to just agree with whatever he said, and promise not to do it again. As long as she did then everything would go smoothly. Well as smooth as they could go.
Usually you would wait outside his office just in case something went wrong, and your father lost his temper. Then you would tap in and do your best to do damage control, but you didn't get chance to ditch your gear, and clean up yet. It was twenty minutes later when you were in the middle of packing your things back into your locker. When footsteps could be heard approaching the locker room, and a few seconds later Vanessa rounded the corner to lean up against the lockers.
She waited till you finished and looked up at her before speaking, "Jay told me to make sure I thank you for taking the burnt of my mistake. Not that I wasn't already going to do that."
"You're welcome but in all honesty the call wasn't that bad. I wanted to make it myself and who knows if we let plan play out entirely. Things could've gotten bad and one of us would've wished we had the guts to do what you did."
Vanessa let out a dry chuckle making you raise an eyebrow at her. "Seriously it's okay I screwed up and I know I did. You can stop trying to make me feel better about it. Voight wasn't too hard on me so you did enough. I promise I won't go home and drown in despair okay."
You let out a sigh realizing that she was right. It was a bad habit of yours to constantly try to make people feel better when things went wrong, because of their actions. "Sorry I can't help it."
"It's okay now I know who I can go to if I ever do need to feel better about myself." Vanessa said with a small smile.
She turned to walk away probably to go catch Hailey before her roommate left for home. She still needed to go car shopping but never seemed to have time for it.
"Rojas wait" You called out to her making her pause and look over her shoulder eyebrows raised in question.
"Why don't you let me buy you a drink at least this was a tough case, and I'm not ready to call it a night yet." It took her a minute to think it over for a second you thought she would turn your offer down. Then she nodded deciding that a drink wasn't bad idea. Vanessa texted Hailey letting her know she didn't need to wait and could go ahead and leave.
The two of you headed out to your car, saying good night to Trudy on your way out. You drove to a nice and secluded bar that wasn't too far from your apartment. It was never overcrowded and cops didn't tend to hangout here. Which was the best thing about it in your opinion, because while you loved your fellow officers. Sometimes after a long case you needed a break from that part of your life, and all the police talk. Whenever you did crave their presence you would just join everyone at Molly's, but this was your getaway. When you just wanted to have a regular drink without questions, or being disturbed.
"Leave your badge and gun in the car. We won't need them in here" You told her. When she unbuckled herself ready to hop out the car.
She looked at you unsure of what to do.
"Hey its chill in here I promise I come here all the time, and till this day. I've never seen a single bar fight breakout the crowd is pretty slow around this time. Please I wouldn't put you in any danger plus I still got a taser and pepper spray on my keychain" You encouraged her.
Vanessa was still hesitant to do it but once you disarmed yourself reaching over to place the items. Inside the glove closet she followed suit deciding to trust your judgement. After that you locked up your car and led her inside taking a seat at small table with two chairs. She sat across from you and watched as the bartender raised his hand greeting you. He shouted that he was going to get your usual ready and be right over with it.
"Wow you guys seem pretty friendly" she teased with a smirk.
"Oh god no he's definitely not my type" You snorted as the bartender came over with your drink in his hand. He heard your statement grabbing his chest mocking hurt at the words. Before placing the drink down on the table "keep reminding me of the most painful rejection. Of my life and you're going to start to paying for your own drinks y/n"
You snorted again "oh please you weren't that hurt the only reason you even asked me out was because Raven dared you. Where is she?"
"She got tonight off who is this? Did you finally score a date with someone actually worth your time?" He asked grinning and holding his hand out to Vanessa.
You were in the process of taking a sip of your drink. When he asked his questions and they nearly made you on your the liquid. You coughed violently eyes snapping towards Vanessa to see how she reacted to his questions. There was playful smirk on her face as she raised an eyebrow at, but there some concern too as she grabbed sone napkins for you.
You snatched them from her to wipe your mouth then turned your glare on the bartender. "No she's a coworker Derek do you really think I would bring a date here to deal with you."
"Of course we're your second family y/n rather you want to admit it or not. Now what can I get you to drink? And can I get a name to please unless you want me to call you y/n's coworker."
"No you can call me Vanessa and I'll take some whiskey on the rocks." Vanessa told him.
Derek nodded and left the two of you alone to get her order.
"An order of buffalo wings and a basket of fries too please I'm starving" You called out to him. He threw a hand in the air to say he got it.
"I'm guessing we're going to be here a while if you're ordering food" Vanessa stated. It sounded more like a question.
"I mean I can get it to go and take you home if that's what you want."
She held up both of her hands. "No no it's cool I actually would like to spend more time with you. Other than Hailey and Kevin you've been the most welcoming person on the team. Not that the team isn't great I just mean-"
"I know what you mean Rojas, and I'm happy someone has been helping you adjust. I know change can't be easy" You said.
It is when you're use to it I'm the type that's more scared to settle down and get comfortable."
"Well for some people it takes time, but eventually everyone finds place and people to call home."
Vanessa opened her mouth but couldn't find the words she was looking for. Usually whenever someone said something like that too her she would wave them off, or make a joke. But you sounded so sure and she couldn't bring herself to disagree. "Yeah maybe one day I will."
You shot her a smile and finished off your drink. Derek arrived with the food, her drink, and another drink for you. He made sure that you guys were good for now and wandered off. Neither of you wanted to relive the case so instead Vanessa told you about the undercover case. She got pulled from and you listened hung on every word coming out her mouth. Even though you preferred to not talk about things like this, but you knew it would take time for her to open up and be vulnerable.
So instead of getting personal you decided to have some fun. When she finished her story and asked you about some of your undercover stories. You opted out yelling for Derek to set up the karaoke machine. Vanessa burst into laughter watching you throw back a two shots and dance your way onto stage.
"I want to dedicate this song to my new coworker, and future best friend Vanessa Rojas" You shouted out to the near empty bar. A few people whistled and cheered you on. The song you picked started and it was a classic.
Vanessa was a hundred percent sure you were a bit drunk as you sang I'll Be There For You by the Rembrandts. But even drunk your singing was still on point and you didn't sound half-bad. Derek had pulled out his phone and started to record from the beginning.
"I'm definitely going to need a copy of that video" She shouted on to him.
"I got you we can exchange numbers after this I got plenty more that you would love." He replied.
Once the song was over you urged her to join you on stage for a duet. When she shook her head no and motioned for you to come down. You called for another round of shots because obviously she needed a confident boost. You didn't really get drunk that often, and while you weren't too far gone. Both Derek and Vanessa knew it might be best to cut you off now especially considering you had work in the morning. She didn't feel like explaining to Voight that she let you so drunk you blacked out or something.
Plus by now it was super late and Derek would be closing the bar down in another hour. Vanessa went up to get you down from the stage. Eventually she was able to coax you into calling it a night by promising to do a duet with you next time. You stumbled down the stairs accepting her hand on the last one. She pulled your body closer and secured an arm around your waist.
"Thanks for drinks Derek I'll see you around, and don't you dare forget about those videos." She yelled heading for the door.
"Don't worry Vanessa I won't get home safely alright" He shouted back.
She pulled your keys from your jacket pocket, but before she could walk towards the car. You pulled away from her hold on your waist to run across the street.
"My apartment isn't that far and it feels great out tonight. We should walk V."
Vanessa was ready to scold you but was caught off by the nickname. No one in her life knew her or liked her enough to give her one before. So she didn't know rather to be okay with it or not. "Y/N come on and get in the car. Its too late out to be walking" she demanded. Her voice wavered as she was trying to be stern hoping that would make you listen.
You paused already at least twenty steps ahead of her. Part of you just wanted to run to see if she would give chase, but the rational part that was barely there told you to listen. So that's you did walking over to your car where she was waiting with the passenger door already open. You climbed in and reclined the seat halfway back. Vanessa got into the driver's seat a few seconds later, and cranked the car up.
"Alright are you good to give directions? Or should I turn on the GPS?" she asked.
"I can give directions Vanessa don't worry I'm not that drunk" You reassured her.
"Well you could've fooled me y/n"
You gave a light smack on the arm making her chuckle. Then directed her towards your apartment that was only a few blocks away. Once y'all arrived Vanessa got out and helped you upstairs and into your building. She tried to leave you at your front door, but you caught her by the elbow.
"Hey where you going?"
"I was going to call an uber or something to get home" She told you with a shrug.
You chuckled lightly shaking your head at her. You pushed opened your front door with one hand, and tugged her in with the other.
"I guess I can wait in here" she mused nervously.
You closed the door, kicked your shoes off and shrugged jacket off. "No way you can crash here for one night. I got an guest bedroom with a comfy bed and all."
Vanessa opened her mouth to argue, but you held up a hand to stop her. "I'm a little drunk not rude or a bad friend. I'm the reason you're stranded V so the least I could do is let you stay the night. Besides I really don't mind okay so don't argue with me."
The tone of your voice told her there was no room for argument. You really knew how to channel your inner Voight when you needed to. But even though Vanessa agreed to stay didn't mean she was comfortable with it. She wasn't use to people being so nice to her, and it freaked her out a bit. This was the second time someone offered their home to her, and while it was only one night. It was still a huge gesture to her she was still getting use to living with Hailey. So while you rummaged around your apartment changing into some night clothes, and bringing out two bottled waters. Vanessa just stood in the hallway waiting for you to come get her. Which you did about five minutes later.
You had changed into some sweatpants and a black t-shirt. "Hey come on mi casa es su casa." She followed you into the living room and down another hallway. There was a door on the left which led to the guest bedroom. You opened the door for her " I put a change of night clothes on the bed for you. Mine should be able to fit you, and there's a bottle of water on the nightstand."
Vanessa gave you a small nod walking into the bedroom. It was about the same size as a master with a queen size bed in the center. A nightstand on either side, and a dresser on the wall adjacent to the bed with a tv. There were little decorations everywhere your personal touch. "Thanks for this y/n I had a great time tonight."
"No problem and anytime next time its your treat." You shot back
"Are you sure there's going to be a next time" Vanessa teased turning to you with a smirk. It was a reflex of hers to just joke when her emotions were high, but you were still drunk and that made you bolder than usual. Before she knew what was happening your lips were on hers with your hands holding her face, as she pushed you up against the door. When the door slammed backed into the wall just as her arms were wrapping themselves around your waist. Vanessa came to her senses her eyes flying open as she broke the kiss pulling away from you.
You stumbled forward chasing her lips but she grabbed both of your arms making you stop. "Y/N you need to go to bed okay you're drunk" she urged trying not to panic.
"I'm not that drunk Rojas" You whispered
"Well you're drunk enough that I'm not doing this with you right now." Vanessa held her ground.
You let out a groan leaning back against the door. Knowing she was right you bid her a good night, and closed her door on your way out. Vanessa released a deep breath she didn't realize she was holding in. Now that you were finally gone what just happened really hit her. She fell back onto the bed realizing she had just kissed her boss's daughter. As much as she wanted to blame it on one too many drinks. She knew that would be a lie at least on her part considering she only had two. She could tell herself it was the heat of the moment, but deep down the truth was. There something forming between the two of you, and for once in her life. These feelings made her want to stay instead of running the other way.

They Don't Know About Us - Vanessa Rojas x Voight!Daughter!Reader - Chicago PD
Request: Can I get a vannessa rojas x reader where the reader is voights daughter (no one knows they're together) they are on a case and the reader gets shot and she has to be taken to med and vannessa I'd really worried like shes almost crying but no one knows why? And then vannessa calls reader "babe" or something and then the rest of intelligence is like "ohhhh"
Warning: gun violence, injuries from getting shot, mentions of surgery and fear of hospitals
Dating someone in Intelligence was hard.
1) You were Voight's daughter.
2) You were also a member of Intelligence.
3) Your girlfriend lived with another member of Intelligence so you couldn't go over there without raising suspicions.
Your were dating Vanessa Rojas. Someone who, despite being new to Intelligence, had caught your attention back when she was undercover.
It was almost laughable how you actually met her back when she was doing undercover work. The situation being that the undercover group had tried to arrest Intelligence and vice versa.
Vanessa had admitted that Hailey had suspicions she was dating someone, but the two of you were careful enough that nobody had any evidence.
Until a case hit the desks that had everyone ready to hit the ground running.
You were in pursuit of a suspect when they pulled a move that had you swearing under your breath.
"How the fuck did they do that?" You grumbled, taking an easier route through the fence instead of over it as Kevin ran behind you.
Vanessa and Hailey spotted you sprinting after the suspect, they even saw the car that almost hit you until you jumped over the bonnet. What they didn't see, but heard, was the gunshot.
"50-21 Ida, 10-1, 10-1 shots fired at the police, officer down, I repeat officer down." Adam exclaimed down his radio.
It was Adam and Kim that found you on the ground, putting pressure on your wound as your dad and Jay went after the suspect that had shot you. Kevin was left to try find a way for the ambulance to get through the streets in the mean time.
"50-21 Eddie, roll an ambo to our location." Kim radioed in, leaving Hailey and Vanessa to run over.
You were barely conscious as your eyes landed on how Vanessa had frozen on the spot, staring at you in shock.
"Rojas, hey, Vanessa, are you okay?" Hailey asked, obscuring Vanessa's view of you as you were loaded into the ambulance.
///
Voight was talking to the receptionist whilst the rest of Intelligence sat in the waiting room. Hailey chewed her lip, eyebrows drifting into confusion as she glanced over at Vanessa.
Vanessa wasn't much better, sat with her hand in her hands as she tried to control her breathing.
"Vanessa, hey, it's going to be okay, Y/n's going to be fine, she'll pull through." Hailey stated, gently placing her hand on Vanessa's shoulder as she looked up, trying her best to stop the tears from falling.
Her mouth opened but no words left it as Voight walked over, briefing them all on how you were doing.
You were out of surgery and now in recovery, they could go visit one at a time when you wake up.
///
It took a while for your eyes to adjust to the brightness, your hand going to cover your eyes until you felt the wires attached to your arm. A sick feeling ran over you as you acknowledged each of them, wanting to remove them but knowing deep down that nothing good would come from it.
"I wouldn't remove those if I was you." Your father's voice caught your attention as you shifted your gaze over to him.
"Ever since you were little, you've hated hospitals." He pointed out, gesturing to the grimace on your face as the heartrate monitor's beeping filled the silence.
"Reminds me too much of what I lost before you took me in." You replied, fiddling with the hospital gown for a moment before you remembered.
"Vanessa! Is she here? Can I see her?" Your urgency had Hank raising an eyebrow before he realised you'd just given him the last piece of the puzzle.
"You know how I feel about in-house romances."
"You don't know how I feel apart her." You retorted, leaving him to raise an eyebrow.
"You really care about her, don't you?"
"Enough that I'll transfer if you try kick her out for dating me." You replied, receiving a brief nod before Hank looked over, gesturing for Vanessa.
The rest of Intelligence watched in confusion as Vanessa all but ran into your recovery room, already talking before the door was shut.
"Babe, are you okay?"
"Uhh?" Adam murmured as they each exchanged confused looks.
Voight barely stopped rolling his eyes at their responses as Trudy walked over with a smirk.
"Atwater owes me $30." She explained as Intelligence began to realise what had just happened.
"How long do you think those two have been a thing?" Jay asked, glancing between everyone before he looked at Voight, "did you know, Sarge?"
Voight glanced back at where you and Vanessa were now, so enshrouded in the warmth of each other that neither of you cared who saw.
"I had a feeling." He admitted, chuckling as he watched you practically melt into goo in response to Vanessa's smile.
The two of you were cuddling, inseparable.

day six: natural disaster | v.r. & h.u.
summary: the largest volcano in el salvador erupts and it makes vanessa think about family she’s never met.
pairing: vanessa rojas x hailey upton
cw: foster care trauma, discussions of death, volcanic eruptions
word count: 1742
read it on ao3
It doesn’t make headline news. That fact in itself isn’t particularly surprising, American media rarely takes a moment to post about anything other than the latest American fuck up, but it still rubs Vanessa the wrong way that she only hears about it by overhearing one of her CIs talking with his family. One of the many volcanoes in El Salvador had erupted, not an unusual occurrence, but due to the size of the smoke plumes, thousands of people are getting evacuated from their homes left and right.
As soon as she’s alone, she looks it up on her phone, religiously refreshing the page to see if any deaths or serious injuries had been reported. She knows it’s stupid to do so, she doesn’t know if any of her extended family even live in the vicinity of the eruption site, and she certainly wouldn’t call her mom up to check, but she just needs to know. Vanessa doesn’t begrudge her mother for losing custody of her at such a young age, she’s lived far too many years without her presence to maintain that grudge, but she missed out on a lot.
Family being the thing she noticed missing out on the most. Thirty two foster homes is a lot, even for a kid who was in the system for almost a decade before finally being given up on one last time at age fifteen, and those years had been filled with inconsistencies on both her mother and her father’s ends. The vast majority of her files had stated she was Salvadoran and black, and while DCFS wasn’t exactly known for its accuracy in regards to anything, she figured that this many repetitions of the fact had to give it some credibility.
The rest of the work day passes her by in a haze, nothing of interest arising in their ongoing case leaving her to stare at paperwork and worry about a nation of people she would never get to know. On more than one occasion, she finds her hands twitching towards her phone, itching to call a number she blocked years ago on the off chance that her extended family lives near a currently active volcano.
Before she knows it, Voight is letting them go home for the night, saying something about looking at it from another angle in the morning, and Vanessa rushes to pack up all of her things and go home. Shutting down her computer and shoving her unfinished paperwork in her top desk drawer, she steadfastly ignores Adam’s calls for a round at Molly’s to distract themselves in favour of grabbing her things and leaving.
Which would have been a great plan, except for the fact that Hailey had driven them both into work that morning, and her girlfriend had been more than eager enough to accept the invitation on both of their behalf. Any other night she could have gone, any other night she could have enjoyed a couple hours after work spent drinking and relaxing, but not tonight. All she wanted to do tonight was obsess over the disaster event, forget everything else going on in her life, pray for people she would never know, and blame her parents for their misgivings.
She does her best to muster up a smile when Hailey walks into the locker room, but she can tell it’s weak at best and it certainly isn’t enough to convince her girlfriend that all is okay. At first Vanessa tries to brush it off, says it’s nothing serious and that she’ll get over it, but all that seems to do is light up warning signals, somehow telling the blonde that the world as she knows it is ending. Sighing in defeat, Vanessa slumps down on the uncomfortable wooden bench, waiting for Hailey to take a seat beside her.
And sure enough, in less than a second her girlfriend is next to her, tucking Vanessa’s hair behind her ear and squeezing her knee, lacing their fingers together as soon as Vanessa holds her hand out to her. They both keep an ear out for their team, and once Vanessa is sure that none of them are coming in, she rests her head on her girlfriend’s shoulder, closing her eyes and forcing back the tears that have been threatening to spill over all day.
Hailey, being the blonde angel that she is, doesn’t say anything to her about it being okay to cry or about how it’d all be okay, letting Vanessa take her time to relax and be in someone’s company with no expectations.
“There was a natural disaster in El Salvador today. Volcano erupted in San Miguel, it’s one of the bigger cities, and it just threw me off.”
“Anything in particular that got to you, or just the whole volcano in your home country thing?” Hailey whispers, turning her head to press a kiss to Vanessa’s temple.
“Kind of. It just made me think about the other family I must have out there, the ones I never met and never will. And then it made me think about Mamá and… basically my head’s been a mess trying to work through a new issue I didn’t realise I had.”
“I’m sorry baby, that sounds like it was really difficult. I’m proud of you though, for not falling back onto bad habits.”
“Thanks Hails.” Vanessa says, her voice hoarse. “Can we, uh, possibly skip Molly’s tonight? I’m not really feeling it.”
“Of course, listen, you take the keys and go wait in the car, I’ll tell Adam we can’t tonight. We can go home, maybe get some takeout, watch some TV, what do you think?”
“That sounds perfect cielo, I guess I’ll see you outside.”
Pushing herself off of her girlfriend, Vanessa grabs both of their bags before heading out the back exit, sure to stick close to the walls and keep out of sight of any of her well intentioned coworkers. Unlocking Hailey’s car, she dumps their bags in the back seat, sliding into the passenger’s seat and checking her phone again for any more updates on the people of San Miguel.
Hailey gets into the car not even five minutes later, having successfully deterred Adam by citing ’women’s problems’ as the reason why they were dropping out, Kim thankfully not mentioning the fact that she knows neither of them were on their period. Vanessa drops her phone in her lap, sighs loudly at the lack of news, and Hailey smiles sadly at her, rubbing her shoulder before turning the car on and driving out of the precinct.
The journey home is a quiet one, Vanessa stuck in her head and Hailey respecting her need for quiet in this difficult time, but when she parks the car in front of their apartment building, Vanessa shakes herself from the thoughts racing around her head, thanking her girlfriend for being so good to her. Hailey tells her to stop being stupid, there being no need to thank her, but Vanessa simply shrugs and leans across the car seat to grab their bags from the back.
When she steps out of the car with them, Hailey takes hers, giving her girlfriend a kiss on the cheek as ‘payment’ for her help despite the look which says ‘you’re so ridiculous’ in response. They walk through the lobby hand in hand, Hailey sending off an order for some Greek food with her spare hand while Vanessa checks her phone again. By the time they get to their apartment, Hailey’s gotten a text to confirm their order meanwhile Vanessa is ready to throw her phone across the hall if it meant the journalists would write updates faster.
As they step into their home, Hailey takes their bags and dumps them in the closet before pocketing Vanessa’s phone, promising to return it once she’s gotten changed into something more comfortable and brings some blankets out of their room with her. She complains at first, glaring at her partner as she stretches her arm high enough to stick it on the shelf of no return, but once she realises she may lose her phone forever - or at least until one of them can be bothered to get a chair - she tactically retreats to their bedroom.
Grabbing the first hoodie she sees, which just so happens to be Hailey’s if the blonde hairs covering it are any indicator, as well as a pair of discarded basketball shorts, Vanessa changes out of her work gear, grabbing the blankets they keep at the end of their bed. Padding across the cold wooden flooring, she walks back into the living room to see it completely transformed.
All the blinds are drawn, and the only light in the room comes from the warm glow of fairy lights draped around the shelving units and window frames. The food that Hailey had ordered is spread out on their coffee table, a bouquet of tulips decorating the centre, and the TV is cued up with Lilo & Stitch, which had quickly become Vanessa’s favourite film after her girlfriend had declared it a travesty that she hadn’t seen it before.
Hailey herself looks rather cosy, sitting at one end of the couch with her feet tucked under the throw cushions that decorate the furniture, wearing a hoodie which Vanessa suspects is hers. She walks over to the couch, pressing a kiss to Hailey’s golden locks and draping the blanket over her, before taking up residence at the other end of the couch. There’s not much point, Hailey will undoubtedly migrate over to her by the time the movie’s half way done, but she doesn’t say anything, smiling to herself at her girlfriend’s antics.
“Okay, so here’s the deal. You can check your phone now, just to see any updates, and once you’ve seen them, you give me your phone to keep a hold of during the film. Sound good?”
“Yeah, sounds good, I love you mi amor.”
“I love you too, asteri mou.” She responds, passing her partner her phone and grabbing a takeout box off of the table.
And with one last check of the news, no serious injuries or deaths reported, Vanessa silences her phone and places it on the coffee table, exchanging it for her food and motioning for Hailey to press play on the movie. Which she does, smiling proudly at her girlfriend as she does so, so amazed at the strength of the woman she loves.

Sunny Day - Rowater
Summary: Vanessa’s undercover assignment is done, she comes back to the 21st to make amends with one person in particular.
Warnings: swearing, angst, mentions of blood & gore
Requested: Yes! #7, “What the hell are you doing here.” & #8, “Don’t walk away again.”
…
Vanessa stepped out of the cab and slammed the door shut behind her, staring straight ahead at the familiar condo in front of her. It had been six months since she had stood before it, and gosh, how she missed it. Including the ugly door hanger Hailey insisted on putting out every spring.
She passed a grey pickup during her walk to the front door, smirking at the sight. When she reached the porch, she dug in the side of her duffle bag, pulling out a set of keys she hadn’t used since she left. She twisted the key in the door and pushed it open quietly, sighing when the first floor was revealed. Everything was exactly the same.
She dropped her duffle bag on the floor and went straight for the kitchen. She didn’t know the last time she ate anything homecooked. She was rummaging through the fridge when she heard thudding behind her, she grinned, she couldn’t wait to see her roommate.
“Chicago P.D. Turn around slowly and show me your hands.” A man’s voice said soft, but sternly.
Vanessa laughed, raising her hands and turning to face the detective. “Hi, Jay.” She said, looking him up and down. Her coworker stood there in only his boxers at the base of the stairs, gun raised.
“Jesus, Vanessa.” He said, running a hand through his hair.
“Good to see you.” She waved a finger at him, “I’m glad to know you feel comfortable around me.”
Jay scoffed, nonchalantly (or not so) lowering his hands so that they covered his crotch. “I’m gonna go get Hailey-”
Before he could even get the sentence out, there was padding above them. “Jay?” She called out, followed by thudding at the top of the stairs. “Babe, what’s wrong-Vanessa?” The blonde asked as she reached the bottom. She squealed a very un-Hailey-like squeal and raced towards her best friend. “Hi.” She said as she wrapped her arms around her.
“Hey.” Vanessa said softly, sighing as she hugged her back.
Jay coughed behind them. “I’m gonna go put some clothes on…”
“Or maybe just pants?” Hailey smirked at him
Vanessa stared intensely at him, “Yeah, don’t hide on my account.” Hailey looked at her best friend, who was staring her boyfriend down and burst out laughing, along with Vanessa.
Hailey walked over to him, placing a hand on his chest, she reached up and pecked his cheek. “Bring me back a pair of sweats?”
“Yeah.” Jay nodded shortly, before disappearing to where he came from.
Vanessa hadn’t noticed until then, but all Hailey was wearing was an oversized grey v-neck, undoubtedly one that wasn’t hers. Hailey settled in on a barstool, motioning for Vanessa to follow. “How long are you back?”
Vanessa shrugged, “I’m not sure. Things kind of got crazy, so they pulled me out to let the wires cool down. They haven’t decided if they are going to send me back in yet.”
“What happens if they don’t send you back in?” Hailey asked.
Vanessa took a deep breath, “The higher ups are pushing for me to stay on with them, either as a undercover case worker or as one of their regulars.”
“V, that’s great! Getting an offer from the feds your 3rd year on the job? That’s incredible.” Hailey exclaimed. “If I didn’t know any better, I would say that the Bureau has something against Voight.”
“Speaking of,” Vanessa said, “How was your stint? Did it end up being short?”
Hailey nodded, “Yeah, about two months. I came home right after you left.”
“Damn.” Vanessa said.
“I know. We just missed each other.” Hailey sat forward, “So, are you gonna take it?”
Vanessa shrugged, shaking her head. “I don’t know...What would you do?” Hailey nearly choked on her own saliva. Vanessa eyed her best friend cautiously, “Did I miss something?” She asked, laughing.
Hailey shook her head, recovering. “No, no. The people I worked with before offered me a spot on a task force a few months ago, in New York.”
Vanessa nodded, “I’m guessing you didn’t take it?” Hailey shook her head, smiling softly. “Do you regret it?”
Hailey glanced at the stairs behind her before grinning at the officer, “Not at all.”
…
The next morning, Vanessa found herself outside of a familiar house once again. Just this time, with two cups of coffee in her hand. She was much more anxious than the night before, she climbed the porch steps cautiously, hitting the door bell with her elbow.
There was noise of shuffling behind it before it finally swung open, Vanessa smiled softly at the sight of the man in front of her. “Hey Kev.” She said quietly.
Kevin stood there in shock, he debated pinching himself. He couldn’t believe who was standing there in front of him, there was no way he wasn’t dreaming. “Wh-What the hell are you doing here?” He asked, maybe a little more aggressively than he should have.
Vanessa was momentarily taken aback by his anger. “They pulled me from the operation…” She held up the warm cup, “I remembered your order, double espresso with a shot of vanilla.”
Kevin took it absently, still searching for the right words. “Thanks, you wanna come in?”
“Yeah.” Vanessa said immediately, “Yeah, I do.”
The two shifted inside the house, setting awkwardly in the colorful living room. “So, uh, when’d you get back?” Kevin asked, not really sure he wanted to know the answer.
“Like two in the morning, I went straight to Hailey’s.” She said, rushing her words a bit. “Jay actually pulled a gun on me, I wasn’t expecting him to be there.” She laughed.
Kevin chuckled, “Yeah, those two have been attached at the hip recently.”
“I’m sorry I missed it.” Vanessa said, looking him straight in the eye. It was more than though, it was almost an apology, almost an explanation for disappearing in the middle of night and just vanishing.
Kevin nodded, he wanted to be angry with her, he really did, but the longer she sat across from him it slowly began to fade. He missed her, he missed her so much and being mad seemed like such a waste of time now. He looked down at her watch. “I have to be at the district in like an hour.” He said, “Do you wanna get a drink tonight?”
Vanessa stood, she assumed that was her invitation to get the hell out of his house. “I have a lot to unpack, a lot to catch up on. Raincheck?” It wasn’t fair to get him to get attached again, not when she could get the call tomorrow that they needed her to disappear all over again.
Kevin glanced out the window, smiling softly, “I don’t do rainchecks, especially on a sunny day.”
Vanessa sighed, shaking her head. She remembered that day like it was yesterday, it was the day everything changed for her. “It was good to see you Kevin.” She took a few steps towards the door, praying that he would just let her go.
“Don’t walk away again, Vanessa.” Kevin said, against all better judgement. He jumped up off the couch, “Not like before”
Vanessa turned to him with blurry vision, “I didn’t have a choice.”
“Yes you did.” Kevin snapped, “You didn’t have to just vanish. You didn’t have to make me hear that you were gone from our Sergeant at work, you could’ve called. You could’ve told me.”
Vanessa shook her head, “I’ve never had anyone care before.” She yelled. “Hailey was in New York, and I just…” She took a deep breath, looking at the ground. “I just left.” But it wasn’t just that, after Hailey left, her and Kevin grew even closer. Voight shifted things around and they ended up partnered up. She couldn’t bear to say goodbye to him and she had never felt that way before.
“I cared.” Kevin said quietly, “I cared a lot.” He took a breath, throwing his arms out. “I still care.”
Vanessa set her coffee down on the inn table next to her and closed the gap between them, attaching her lips to his. Kevin caught her with ease, wrapping his strong arms around her to pull her even closer. Vanessa’s hands found the nape of his neck, pulling him down so she could actually reach. Eventually the two pulled away, breathless.
“I’m sorry, I shouldn't have done that.” Vanessa apologized.
Kevin nodded, “You’re right...I should have.” He leaned in again, kissing her passionately, “Jump.” He whispered against her lips, Vanessa obliged. He picked her up with ease before backing up slowly and sitting on the couch so that she was straddling him.
“I-um-'' She said in between kisses, but she kept losing her train of thought. He was a bit distracting. Finally she pushed on his chest, jumping up and putting some space between them. “I have to tell you something.” Kevin nodded. “The feds, they offered me a job.”
“Wow,” Kevin said, sitting forward. “That’s great V. I’m really happy for you,” He said genuinely.
“Thanks,” She said, still trying to catch her breath. “I think I’m gonna take it.”
Kevin sighed, “You should.”
“It’s in Chicago.” She said, smirking as Kevin’s head popped up. “I wouldn’t leave the city, but it’s centered around UC work, so I’d be gone a lot.” She sat down on top of him again, holding her face in his hands. “But, I want this, I want you. And I want to make it work, so…”
“So, nothing.” Kevin said, “Take it, you deserve it.” He reached up and pecked her gently. “I like you a lot, Vanessa, We’ll make it work, wherever you are.” Vanessa grinned, wrapping her arms around him and breathing deeply. It had taken so long, but she had come so far, she finally found her home.
…
A/N: This is my first time writing Rowater, so sorry if it seemed a little off. What did you think? Personally I will always believe that Vanessa is just undercover and she WILL be coming back, recipe for heartbreak, I know. But still, my baby Kevin needs someone to love. Thanks for reading! <3

To Hell & Back
REQUESTED: Yes
PAIRING: Matt Casey x Reader
WARNING(S): Swearing, Violence, Human Trafficking and Depression
—
“Back already, all your old buddies are gone no action to solve.”
I slightly narrowed my eyes at her comment, but playfully brushed it off like it was nothing as pre-usual.
“Oh, okay, I’m actually here to see Kim.”
Sergeant Platt is very tough on everyone, but every now and then she’ll have a soft side once in a blue mood, she nodded her head from behind the desk turning around and walking over towards the intercom buzzer, she buzzed herself through the gate and disappear for a momentarily. Kim and Platt walked back down the staircase through the gate and onto precinct floor.
“Hey Kim!” I said smiling giving her a quick hug then took a step back.
“I have a friend who works at the 911 dispatch operator, she had a chilling call that really bothered me, and I want your help on it; if that’s okay.” I spoke, “Yeah, sure.”
“I’m actually here to see two of your officers, O’Malley and Jefferies.”
Sergeant Platt tapped on the glass window behind the desk as she motioned for the two officers to come out and speak about to us. “Jefferies. O’Malley, this is officer Y/L/N.” Sergeant Platt introduced.
“Hey,” I smiled a bit.
“You with intelligence?” He asked placing a patrol radio back into the charging dock, “She wishes,” Kim mumbled underneath her breath thinking I didn’t hear her at all, I gave her a quick glare before looking at the men.
“Um, no, patrol officer.”
“A friend of mine at the 911 dispatch operator gotten a call that you guys took, 322 S. Aberdeen West Loop.”
“Yeah, sure.” He spoke slowly unsure where I was taking this, “I was just wondering why 19 - Paul?”
He strutted a bit, “We talked to the husband and wife who lived there. Wife said it was an accidental 9-1-1 call, nothing to report.” He said briefly looking at his partner then back at me.
“She said it was accidental?” Not buying a single word, “Um, okay, did you suspect domestic violence or?”
“No, ma’m” He shook his head, “No sign of abuse.”
“Did you interview them separately or?”
“Hey! What is this?”
I snapped out of my trace of thoughts to look at the other officer, “I’m sorry, I’m not checking up on you.” I stumbled over my words, “Isn’t that actually what you’re doing? Implying we just blew off our jobs.”
Tension filling the room now.
“I apologize, It’s really isn’t my intention to.” I shook my head, as I overstepped; “Yeah.”
He looked at me not buying a single word I said, “Look I get it, bothering hormones..” He started chuckling as he trailed off the conversation, Sergeant Platt stood up from her desk and approached closer. I felt Kim holding onto my forearm holding me back a bit, the nerve us female police officers have to deal with on a daily basics with sexist comments from the men in this world.
Sergeant Platt gave a look, he quickly shut up.
“There’s nothing there, husband and wife seemed happy. Um, no sign of anything wrong. We did our jobs and we left.” He shook his head, “That’s it.”
He motioned to his partner to follow him, leaving me to my thoughts.
With a stern face I headed for the front door of the district before getting stopped by Platt, “Oh no, oh wouldn’t do that.”
I turned around on my heels, “That isn’t your case. You can’t be doing follow-ups.”
I furrowed my eyebrows together, “Then I take it you’ll be coming with me?”
“She is she.” Sergeant Platt pointed to Kim.
Kim slightly nodded her head as she approached me, her and I walked off the precinct floor and out the district doors, into the cold freezing winter crisp air, “I’ll drive,” I nodded my head, as I climbed into her vehicle; buckling up my seat belt over my chest.
We arrived at the apartment complex building, I held onto a yellow folder as Kim opened the front doors for me to enter first, I thanked her and walked straight towards the elevator, she pressed the button; patiently waiting for the doors to open. Quietness between one another. Hoping the doors to open, but nothing was happening. She pressed it again, in hopes it’ll work.
Kim and I glanced at each other, I motioned her we take the staircase up to the floor. “Okay, the condo the 9-1-1 call came from condo 3B, owned by George Weller and Anne Weller,” I spoke glancing at the file in my hands then turned behind me to look at Kim who was very much walking too slow for my pace, “Are you coming?”
She scoffed underneath her breath.
Kim knocked on the door, “Chicago PD?”
She gave me a quick glance, and knocked louder; “George Weller, Chicago PD?”
Without hesitation I twisted the door knob and opened it, revealing that they didn’t lock their door. “That works too.” Kim mumbled underneath her breath, I glanced around the room to see blood. Making the both of us drawing out our weapons.
“Crossing.” I spoke walking carefully down the hallway briefly looking into each rooms, “More blood, Chicago PD”
“All clear here!” Kim said across the room, “Yeah, same here, no signs of sex or violence in the master, but there’s blood and urine.”
“Something happened here.” Kim mumbled confused, grabbing a hold of her radio in one hand, “21-02 squad.”
“Go, 21-02 squad.”
“Roll a couple of units and the mobile lab to 322 S. Aberdeen..” Kim trailed off.
“Hello,” I spoke approaching the front door to see a woman, “Is everything okay? That couple fights all the time.”
“Okay, have you seen them this morning?” I asked.
“No, I haven’t. I have been inside.” She spoke calmly before walking over towards the elevator pressing the button multiple times, “What is up with this elevator?”
“So, what do we got?” Voight spoke casually walking into the room, giving Kim a nod as he approached us more into the living room. “What we got is no idea.”
“A friend of mine who works at the 911 dispatch operator, she had a chilling call inside the condo asking for help. Patrol responded and reviewed the husband and wife before but we found the husband dead downstairs.”
Voight attention was on me, “And all this happened between the hours of the follow up?”
“Yup, patrol saw no sign of disturbance.”
“The door was unlock when we got here, signs of a struggle inside and lots of blood trail.” Kim mentioned, “Oh yeah, someone took a heavy beating in that master bathroom.”
“I don’t know, I think the wife. The landline was in the bathroom and I’m thinking she took a beating and called 9-1-1, and then killed the husband. But it’s miles away from confirmation.”
“There’s no cameras in the building and no witnesses so far.”
“Alright, let’s start with we locate the wife.” Voight ordered, nodded back.
“There’s our guys.” Kim sarcastically spoke, “C’mon.” He said.
“Hey” Voight said approaching the patrol officers closer and closer now, “Serg, this makes no sense.” The young police officer said.
“Okay”
“We were here for a few hours ago, if something had felt wrong we wouldn’t left.”
“Listen you can’t always see these things coming. What I want to know is if you guys go inside the apartment.” Voight glanced over his shoulder looking into the apartment then back to the officers. “No, Mr. and Mrs. Weller at the door.”
Voight coughed.
“They were happy. Laughing, there were zero reasons to go inside.”
“Did you see anyone enter the building?” I asked flipping the file open showing the husband and wife’s photo. “Is that? Can I see that file?”
“Yeah?” I asked slightly confused.
“This isn’t?” He started to mumbled pointing his finger to the wife’s photo, “What’s going on?” Voight asked, suspicious.
“This isn’t the woman we spoke to.”
“That’s Anne Weller current I.D photo.” Now feeling more confused on what’s going on here,The one we spoke to was younger. She was a brunette. She said her name was Anne Weller, that she was his wife. And we had no reason to question that. Should we get our fraternal order of police lawyers here?”
“Gimme, a break.” I grumbled, turning around back into the apartment.
“That’s your first question? Yeah, I’ll probably give them a call.”
“So what made you do initial follow-up?” Voight asked standing beside me, “A feeling, I guess. I heard her in her voice.”
Voight nodded his head, patted me on the back before leaving the crime scene.
“So, if they didn’t talk to Anne Weller? Who did they talk to?” Kim asked as we made our way downstairs into the basement. “Hey”
“Well, you caught a weird one. George Weller, here. Dead were he lies. Looks like a fight happened in elevator. Got blood splatter, signs of a struggle; self-defense wounds, multiple lacerations in the stomach, killer road down with him, we think.” Adam spoke crossing his arms over his chest, looking down at the lifeless body.
“So, can anyone access this garage?” Voight asked.
“No, you need a remote. George didn’t have his, we checked his car and his crib. Pockets are empty. No cell. No wallet.” Vanessa said,”We think the killer robber him.” Adam added in.
“Jay, has Anne Weller now and is taking her to the district. She been at work all day.” Kevin spoke, walking into a our circle.
“Good, keep working this scene pull any forensic if you can?” Voight ordered.
“Serge?” I called out, “Yeah?”
“Is it okay if I worked the case with you? I’ll ride the desk the whole time.”
“Your instincts called it, you should work it.”
I made my way upstairs towards the intelligence room, I glanced down at my phone, Matt send me a few texts here and there, asking me if I wanted to go to Molly’s after shift or go straight to dinner at our favorite restaurant together, I didn’t bother replying.
“If she is prostitute why call 9-1-1 and lie about it if patrol shows up? Hailey said, standing beside the white board.
“I think we have an answer to that. George’s cell phone wasn’t recovered at the scene and it is shut off now, but we can get access to it from he’s iCloud account.” Adam spoke walking up the stairs with Kevin.
“Patrol confirm that this is the actual lady who they talked to at the condo.” Kevin pointed at the computer screen. “Time stands?” Jay asked.
“These photos were taken eight minutes before the 9-1-1 call, followed by these.” Kevin clicked the mouse to revealing another woman. “A second undefined woman in a condo with the same time frame.”
“She can’t be more than 16.” Kim mumbled.
I stood quietly in the background closely watching as everyone stood around the computer as Kevin showed the photos. My heart dropped. Gut-wrenching pain shot through me.
“She’s the one that called 9-1-1, she’s gotta be.” Kim whispered clicking through the photos before looking up, “Who is she?”
“Her photo doesn’t match in any of our systems.” Adam spoke.
“Missing person’s?” I chipped in, feeling that dark void inside of me. Knowing this feeling all to well.
“No, no one’s looking for her.” He said, “We do think we know how George booked the girls. He messaged a burner phone yesterday by a minute later the burner responded with pictures of girls to choose from.”
“George, tapped into that same burner and after that 9-1-1 call he had with.” Kevin said, “We’re thinking pimp?” Voight said, “More than likely.”
“You alright, (Y/N)?” Kevin asked, “Yeah, I’m fine.” I whispered slowly walking over towards the desk I’m borrowing for the time being, knowing all to well I’m wasn’t okay. I keep myself busy with the things I do. But every time I pause, I still think of her. Always.
“I’m going to save you a little trouble on the next part. Where you act like I’m a damn weeping willow, a place where you get crime from a sort sob story and you are going to tell me that you are on my side. How you can help? Tell me about your deep dark little past which what made you a lady cop. Your daddy touched you? Your little buddy was murdered? You were raped by the boy next door? Now you want to save all the little lost girls because of it. You are going to save me because you get it? You get me. But I know the scripted, and I know you are a fake. I don’t need you to save me, I take care of myself.” She growled.
“I’m out of the league, I don’t normally work these cases.”
“Then let me out.”
She managed to hit a nerve in me. Everyone does have a past they don’t talk about especially a dark past. You smile, but you wanna cry. You talk, but you wanna be quiet. You pretend like you’re happy but you aren’t. Behind this innocent smile of mine, lay words left unsaid. Words of longing, love, anger, and hate, all repeated inside my head.
“Hmm, you don’t need my help Mira, I need yours.”
“Out” She shot back.
“You already fought you already got out.” I said, her cutting me off; “Let me out.” She shouted.
“You fought to find away to live-e,”
“I’m not talking to this bitch!” Screaming at me now, “That girl that called to 9-1-1 is still fighting right now. She was in a place you were right now.”
“I’m not going to remember.”
“She is running out of time, I know you know that, Mira. I’m a good cop, I will find her.”
“No, you won’t and I don’t want to remember.” She tearfully cried in anger.
“You have to for her!” I shot back, feeling overwhelmed now.
“I don’t want to” She screamed in my face, I slammed my fist onto the table and screamed back into her face, “God dammit, Mira! Look at this picture now!”
Mira and I broke each other, the room filling with silences for a brief second or two, I kept my eyes glued to her. She broke eye contact with me, and started to cry. “Please help me.” I whispered.
I carefully placed the photos of the men in front of her, waiting.
“That’s him.” She pointed at the photo in front of her, “See, I know.”
“Yeah,” I whispered, recollecting the photos into a folder beside on the table, “He keeps you high. Never alone. Always someone watching. Even when we weren’t working and they were watching. I sleep on the floor, starving. They see if you cry, be afraid. Be asleep.” She said as tears rolled down her cheeks.
“Where did they hold you?” I asked, pulled up a writing pad.
I stood up from the chair and walked out of interrogation room, Matt send me another text, “Or we can stay at home cook dinner together, and watch the game?”
I inhaled and turned off my ringer to silent.
I bottle everything up, I hide my emotions, I pretend to be okay. It’s not healthy, I know, but I don’t want to be a burden, I don’t want to have people worried about me. When I’m upset. I shut myself down. I have no motivation for anything. I tell myself that nobody cares, even though I know some do. I think about all of the negative things I could possibly think of. I give myself all the pain, thinking I deserve it. I’m not sure why I do that, but that’s just how I am.
“They said Danny would separated them and take them to a really cheap motel by the highway if they step out of line.”
Everyone grabbed a hold of their jackets and were off.
I sat at the wooden desk in the intelligence room alone, staring blankly at the photos of naked girl who plead on the phone for help. Gut-wrenching, thinking back that exactly happened to her. She was at the wrong place at the wrong time. If only I was there to protect her like I was a post to be, she would still be alive today, but she isn’t.
I think the hardest part of losing someone, isn’t having to say goodbye, but rather learning to live without them. Always trying to fill the void, the emptiness that’s left inside your heart when they go. I don’t like the memories because the tears come easily, and once again I break my promise to myself for this day. It’s a constant battle. A war between remembering and forgetting.
“Hello? Hello? This is officer Y/LN, a friend of mine answered your call two days ago, she told you to hang on. I have been looking for you.”
“H-hello..”
“Hi, can you tell me where you are? What’s happening?” I asked speeding down a couple of blocks. “Um, motel, room 8. He said to take a shower, he thinks I’m taking one.” She whispered under her breath.
“Okay, okay, that’s really good. I’m on my way. Who’s there with you?”
“Daniel..”
“Alright, stay where you are and lock the door if you can.” I ordered her, “Emma”
“Hi, Emma. I’m Y/N. Stay on the line, you don’t have to say anything, okay. Don’t say anything I’m almost there. I just need you to hang on.”
I pulled my vehicle into the motel parking lot, came to a halt. I quickly stepped out of the driver’s side, holding onto the door tightly in my hands, knuckles turning pure white. Anger raged inside of me. If I couldn’t save my sister back then I’m sure of hell plan on saving this girl, I don’t plan on losing anyone else.
“Hey, Emma, I’m right here with you, alright; just hang on.” I spoke calmly into my cell phone, I reached into my pocket I hesitated to call for back-up.
I heard screams coming from my phone, without hesitating I drew out my weapon and busted down the door, I raced into the room to see no one but only hearing slashing noises coming from the bathroom. Daniel stood in the bathroom, I shot fire.
He charged at me, slamming me down onto the sink hard.
Grabbing a hold of my jacket in one hand, and then slamming me into the wall, punching me directly into the face, I screamed clawing at his face to try to get him off of me. I ripped a chuck of hair from his scalp, hit him repeatedly, crushing a nerve point in his shoulder, he groaned.
I roared with venom as he threw me down onto the floor of the cold hard titles of the bathroom, punching harder directly at my abdominal. I lunged at him then kicked him, reaching for the toilet seat cover in my hands slamming it against his head, knocking him over; giving me a chance to reach for my gun laying on the floor. He threw himself onto me, I grabbed a hold of his arm and bite him harder, sinking my teeth into him, he screamed in pan; him grabbing my head and smashing against the floor, I shot twice.
He’s lifeless dead body weighted over me like a 1,000 pounds, I hysterically sobbed as I moaned in extreme pain, I threw him off of me. I felt intense pain, tears rolling down my cheeks as I slowly climbed myself into the cold water bathtub. I grunted in pain, “Ugh! Come on!”
“Oh!” I gasped.
“No...” I mumbled, with what I had left of my strengthen I managed to grab a hold of Emma’s white t-shirt and lift her head out of the water.
“You’re okay. I’m here.” I whispered, falling into the bathtub, keeping her head rested on my chest as I waited for back-up to arrive any minute now. I felt like I couldn’t breath. Just the thought of losing her scared me.”Come on. You’re okay.”
“Chicago PD!”
“Y/N!?”
“Hailey..” I weakly mumbled underneath my breath, “Please help her..” I choked back on some tears.
“Please.. help her!”
Hailey approached the bathroom closer and bend down to reached for the lifeless body laying on top of me. “She needs CPR!” I grunted in pain.
Hailey’s heart was pounding a mile per an hour, as she was performing CPR on the 16 year old, she was cold and blue; lifeless; dead. She continued to do chest compression’s on her chest, “15-21, Henry 10-1, I have an officer and civilian down..”
“How’s Emma?” I gasped, feeling sharp pains shooting through my whole body now. The shock was wearing off now. “Are you okay?” Hailey asked, tears creeping in-between her eyes.
Hailey still continued to give Emma chest compression’s on her, until we heard her coughed out the water and was slowly breathing once again, she slowly opened her eyes. “Okay, okay.”
“Y/N, Y/N, are you alright!?”
A frantic Matt came running in the motel closely followed by detective Kim by his side, Matt wasn’t understanding why you had been ignoring his texts all day, so he tried to call you but you didn’t pick up which got him thinking maybe everything was fine but what happens if everything wasn’t fine? He had to make sure you were fine, so he called up Kim. Knowing how strong of a bond you two had was more pure than anything, when Kim told him how closely you gotten to this case; she had to let him know about your kid sister.
She went missing when she was 16 years old. And that you blamed yourself because of the amounts of arguments and countless fights they had with each other, and one day she had enough with you and left home. They thought she was staying at a friend’s place to only find out she was missing. She was picked up by a stranger and sold to the human trafficking ring, Y/N used all her power and strengthen to find her, only to get a call that she was found dead by a river a month later.
She dies and not her, and she feels guilty, if it wasn’t for her, it’d be Y/N lying there... she wished it was her instead.
“I don’t know... I don’t know..” I softly cried in a broken whispered.
Matt runs straight to me, bending down to my level, scooping me up in his arms bridal style and I buried my face deeper into the nook of his neck. I wrapped my arms around his neck tightly as he lifted me out of the icy cold bath water, muffled cries of pains, my grip tightens.
“It’s alright.” Matt’s voice cracked, holding back tears.
He lead her outside to the ambulance where the paramedics were patiently waiting, the rest of the intelligence squad stood outside waiting, watching, prayer for my safely. Matt laid me down onto the stretcher, I could hear faint voices among me; I felt them putting a breathing & respiratory equipment over my mouth and nose, I deeply breathe in and out. I slowly peeled my eyes open to see a bright shinning light above me, my tight grip held stronger onto Matt’s forearm.
I slowly closed my eyes again, everything becoming a blur, faint sirens of the ambulance rang out in the background, paramedics shouting.
My eyesight was a bit fuzzy and hazy as my vision was adjusting to the light, I realized I was laying in one of the hospital beds, the doctor had came in early to tell him that they had to remove my spleen and appendix, it had ruptured during the attack.
A part of me felt broken, like I failed.
I turned my head to the other side of the bed, a familiar figure came into view now, Matt. He sat down next to her, taking her hand in into his own. Her skin was warmer now, no more icy cold hands. “Hey.” He breathed when I looked at him, neither of us spoke. I just sat there in silence. My chest was aching from wanting to cry right now, but I didn’t let myself. Her eyes, they used to shine so bright.
The thing with broken clocks is you can always tell exactly when they stopped ticking, with people it isn’t so easy and sometimes you can’t even tell they’re broken.
Tears were rolling down my cheeks, Matt immediately brought me into a hug, stroking my back in a soft soothing manner. I hiccuped, “I’m sorry..” I croaked, bursting into tears.
“I’m right here, okay?”

Needed Her. (Connor Rhodes)
Summary: You and Vanessa were placed in a foster case but we spilt off. You hadn't seen her in years
Words: Around 680
Requested: yes
Promopts:
Warnings or A/N: Sorry it's short.
You had years of practice with running from the law and doing illegeal dealings, so you didn't have any feelings towards being made to do a drug deal because the big guy didn't want to get his hands dirty but this time, he was coming.. "I got it,"
"Are you sure, she can do it? I mean I have been doing deals with top notch names and what has this silly little girl has done?"
You turned your head to the newest recuirt, a man who thought he knew it all and was better than you. You turned and cocked an eye at your boss. He shook his head to ingore him. You nodded and grabbed the bag on the table and started to head out but before you did, you looked at him. "Trust me, you have no idea what this silly little girl can do. I can shoot your hand off and not even blink. Fuck with me,"
You lifted the bag on your shoulder and walked out. On your way out, you got told the plan once again and got into your boss' car with his three bodyguards. You drove to the meet and you were standing there for a good ten or so minutes before the car drive up. When the car stopped, the driver's seat and the passenger side door open and it revealed to be a blonde and a brown hair guy. They took a look at you and then to your boss. "You got the guns?"
You looked back at them. "Got the money?"
The guy looked at the blonde and the blonde walked over with a bag and placed it on the table. "All here,"
Boss stepped forward to count the money and he nodded towards you. You walked to the trunk of the car but before you could open the truck, one of the boss' guard stepped forward and said something to the boss which made the guy and the blonde kept placed their hands on the weapons. "Wait Y/N. The deals off,"
The guy and the blonde looked at each other and then back at your boss. "What? Why?"
The three bodyguards quickly raised their guns at them. "Cause your cops,"
You walked over to where your boss was. "You're cops? I knew something was fishy,"
Then everything blew up. You didn't know what was up or down. You just knew there were gunshots everywhere until you felt a sharp mind numbing pain in your stomach. You looked and there was blood leaking through your shirt. You placed your hand on the wound and you backed up against the car and slide down.
---
Connor gave you a disapointed looked and shook his head. "I knew this was going to happen. You're lucky that it was only a graze,"
You wrapped your arm around your husband's neck after he finished patching you up. "I'm also lucky that my husband just so happens to be a doctor,"
He placed his hands on on your legs. "Yeah yeah,"
You heard the curtain open and saw your sister walk in with a cup of coffee. "She's also one of the strongest people I know,"
"I don't know why you needed her. She's been out of that life for almost five years now,"
"For the past five years, her ex boss was out of the country and we couldn't get to him but we got intel he was coming in and she was the only way to get him,"
Connor looked at Vanessa and then back at you and sighed. "Just never again,"
"No worries, her ex boss is dead. So shes no longer on the hook to help out,"
Connor smiled. "Thank God for that,"
Vanessa nodded and then left. "Hey Nessa, are Jay and Hailey okay?"
She called over her shoulder. "Yeah,"
"I'll go start the discharge papers. By the time, the papers get done, I should be off. So lets order in and watch our favoirte movies,"
"I love you,"
"I love you too,"

Volomag and Vodka

The title comes from what I think Voight would say once he realized how all his subordinates were looking at each other :D
Living with one of your coworkers was... Interesting to say the least. Hailey was just happy that Rojas wasn’t also her partner otherwise they would see way too much of each other and wouldn’t have the sister bond they’re working so hard on forming. When Hailey left earlier, to go have breakfast with Jay, Vanessa didn’t think anything of it. It was becoming more and more common for her to wake up to a note on the fridge saying that Hailey was somewhere doing something with Jay. They were partners, had survived a lot together, were totally in love with each other, and they refused to acknowledge their own feelings. So Vanessa found it odd in no way at all. It was one fateful Friday morning that something was different. A short but precise note was left on the fridge in Hailey’s swirly writing, but something was, not out of place, somewhere it was not supposed to be. In direct sight line from the coffee maker, in the little nook that herald the washer and dryer, was a basket that held Hailey’s dry load from last night that hadn’t been folded yet on top of said dryer. Even with the distance between Vanessa and the article of clothing, the fact that it still slightly crumpled up, and only pieces of it were visible from the voids between the white plastic, she could clearly recognize the shirt. The faded dark green cotton t-shirt with grey lettering stood out like a sore thumb amongst Hailey’s red, blue, and black clothes. The same t-shirt Halstead wore the first time Vanessa went to watch the blackhawks game at Ruzek’s place for the first team game night. His army rangers t-shirt.
It happened more and more over the next couple of months, Jay staying over and sleeping with Hailey, in her bed, and at least him but usually both being gone by the time Vanessa got up. She’d woken up or come back late and peeked in Hailey’s room enough times to see them dead asleep, wrapped in each other, and fully clothed. She started listening out for them, to see if they were doing anything... Eventful. But nope. She heard them, but they never had sex. Or did anything even remotely steamy. There was only a thin wall between Vanessa and Hailey’s rooms, she could hear everything but the specifics. She could hear talking, murmuring, laughing, and oddly enough, singing. From both of them. She didn’t know what was going on, but she had never seen either of them so well rested. And apparently, she wasn’t the only one. Kim was asking her if she had a boyfriend, “no, no boyfriend. Just a new pillow.” Jay, who’d been pretending not to listen raised and amused eyebrow at Hailey, and action that was only noticed by Hailey and Vanessa. And the guys ribbed Jay about finally getting laid. “She must be real special if she’s making you smile.”
“Huh?”
“Ruz is right, you’ve been smiling more, you’re definitely seeing someone.”
“And getting laid.”
“RUZ.”
“Guys,” Jay interrupted the beginning of an argument, “I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I’m not seeing someone. Or getting any.”
“What? No way man, I don’t buy it. You definitely have a ‘I just had mind-blowing sex’ vibe about you.”
“You know I don’t get the chance to say this often, but Ruzek is right.”
“HEY!”
“Seriously guys. I’m not hooking up with anybody, haven’t for a while actually, I’m just sleeping better.”
“Really?”
“How?”
“I got a different bed.” That last line made Hailey inhale her coffee.
Around New Years, Jay went to spend his vacation time with the other Halstead in New York. Leaving Hailey without her bedtime companion. This resulted in the blonde woman falling asleep everywhere that wasn’t her bed. Seriously, she fell asleep in Vanessa’s bed once. This time Vanessa found her asleep on the couch, the TV still playing Wonder Woman. There had been a new addition to Hailey’s regular wardrobe. A chain, the pendant or whatever was on it, was tucked underneath her shirt. The chain wasn’t one you’d usually find with a necklace, one of those bumpy ones that were usually reserved for dog tags. When Vanessa found Hailey sleeping on the couch on January second, she found that she was right. The metal had fallen out from under her shirt due to her position, and when Vanessa pulled a blanket around her she got a good look at them.

Hailey Upton was wearing a set of Jay’s dog tags. She was shocked, so shocked it left her trembling. She was shaking as she took out her phone to snap a picture. She quickly retreated, to move the photo into a locked folder. If whatever they were got out, it wasn’t going to be through her. Once she calmed herself down fury started to cocoon her. Hailey was fucking awesome, had a fucking terrible childhood, and Vanessa was going to be damned if that fucker didn’t know what he had. So she called him. “Listen up you adicto al gel para el cabelo-“
“Rojas?”
“Don’t you dare interrupt me Halstead o juro por Dios que volare a Nuevo York y te amenazare en persona.”
“I’m sure that you have a very good reason to be threatening me- are you threatening me? It feels like you’re threatening me- in Spanish but it’s three am.”
“I don’t know what you and Hailey are doing but if you hurt her I’ll rip of your balls and turn them into a pair of earrings and give the to Hailey on her birthday. Are we clear?”
“... Yes.”
“Bueno.”
“We- we’re not...”
“Hm?”
“We’re not sleeping together- well, okay, we’re sleeping together- but it’s JUST sleep. Not sex. Just sleep. Cuddling. And eating together... and stuff. Just, uh, not sex. I’m telling the truth. Promise.”
“I know.”
“How did you find out?”
“Lot’s of little hints. What really solidified it was seeing you dog tags around her neck.”
“Oh. Yeah. Those were part of her Christmas gift. Just... I wanted her to know that she’s important to me.”
“Okay.”
“Okay.”
“Don’t hurt her, she doesn’t deserve that.”
“I know. I won’t.” Then she hung up, he got the message, and Vanessa really didn’t want to hear him stutter in her ear anymore.

Could you do No. 54 “You’re cute when you’re half asleep like this.” with Vanessa from PD and a female reader?
I love Vanessa! She’s one of my favorite One Chicago characters!!
The thud that came when you dropped your bag on the floor made Vanessa jump, her head rising from the sofa as her hand went to grab her sidearm.
"Whoa, whoa." You put your hands out in front of you, showing you had nothing. "It's just me, babe."
Her eyed widened. Six months in and although you had gotten used to her jumpiness, it still broke your heart a little when she looked at you like she didn't recognise you, her girlfriend.
To your relief, she let out a sigh and rolled her head back. Her hand pulled back from her gun and she instead extended it to you.
With a smile, you crossed the room. You sunk down beside her and rested your head against the back of the sofa only inches from hers. Taking your hand in hers, she brought it to her lips and placed a kiss on your knuckles.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to react like that." Vanessa's voice was quiet, almost shy. It was always like that after an incident - you do something sudden, she jumps or goes for a weapon. Those more severe ones where she'd fall out of bed or drop whatever she was holding were few and far between but ones like this, scaring her awake, happened often.
Your thumb brushed over her hand in a soothing motion. "I was the one that made the noise and woke you up. You don’t have anything to apologize for, Vanessa.”
Her eyes found yours and she gave you a small smile. You lent in and pressed a kiss to her forehead, making her chuckle.
“When did you finish up? You should’ve texted me, I would’ve gone and picked you up after your shift ended.”
You arched an eyebrow. “What, and deny me the chance to come home to you all bundled up waiting for me?”
She rolled her eyes. “You mean to say you were watching me?”
“Aw, how could I miss seeing you like this?” You raised your other hand to her face and brushed her hair back. “You’re so cute when you’re half asleep.”
“I beg your pardon? I’m cute ALL the time!”

15 things that Rowater would include
The rest of the team teasing them about their relationship.
Kevin would call her “Baby Girl”.
It’s absolutely imposible to get Vanessa up of bed early, they would often fight to each other about this. Kevin would bribe her with a big cup of coffee. “Just five more minutes, please” would be Vanessa’s favourite phrase.
They would enjoy going to Molly’s after a good day at work so Vanessa can meet other cups and firefighters.
Vanessa likes to be in Pyjamas and stay in home when they have a free day. Unlike work where she couldn´t stop moving.
They would not be huge on PDA, especially in public.
Kevin would love cuddles.
Even if he acts like a tough guy at work, on the inside Kevin is a teddy bear, he never wants to let Vanessa go.
Vanessa is a wild spirit, always hiperactive and waiting to prove herself but she knows that she doesn’t need to prove anything to Kevin.
Vanessa would have her own opinions about Jordan “You don’t deserve any of this, Kevin” and even if she doesn’t actually know what’s like to have a family, she knows how important family is for Kevin.
Kevin would feel that Vanessa brought fun and joy to his life.
He would always make sure that Vanessa’s bulletproof vest is strapped on properly.
Sometimes, they get into fights because Vanessa wants to do things her own way and quickly.
After a rough case, Kevin would put Vanessa close and whisper her sweet things to her ear.
Both are very passionate of their work and sometimes it would be difficult to disconnect for them.

Winter Festivities - Vanessa Rojas x Reader - Chicago PD
Request: Hi its been a while since I requested something, I hope you are doing alright. I was wondering if you could write an Vanessa Rojas x reader one, where they spend Christmas at readers sister house, and the family has like family sweater and they make vanessa one? and she gets like super emotional?
"So, Rojas, how are you spending the winter festivities this year?" You enquired as you fiddled with the coffee stirrer, biting your lip as you tentatively removed the lid of your mug so you could stir your drink.
"Uh, I don't know, probably on my couch, eating leftover pizza or something-"
"Nope. Absolutely not, you're coming with me. I have to go to my sister's house and you're coming with me, it's official." You declared, stirring your drink carefully as Vanessa's eyes widened.
"You really don't have to do that-"
"Well, I am, I'm not leaving to spend the festivities alone, V." You replied, replacing the lid of your drink as Vanessa gave you a soft smile.
"Thank you, Y/n."
///
"So, we usually all go up to my sister's house two days before and spend four days up there. We all go ice skating then we decorate gingerbread houses, followed by a festive movie marathon, then we all go to bed eventually... next day it's food prep, but we usually split off to do our own things, if you wanna pick some stuff to do. Third day, presents, the meal, board games, more movies. Final day, it used to snow, but usually that's everyone packing up, since I usually spend new years with close friends, so you're spending new years with me if you want?" You explained, tapping at the steering wheel as Vanessa put her stuff in the boot of your car, nodding at you as she slipped into the passenger seat.
"Are you sure I'm not intruding?"
"You know what those movies say when someone says that, right? 'the more, the merrier. Plus I get ripped into every year that I don't bring a friend or anyone to any family holidays." You explained as you set off in the car, putting the postcode into the satnav before heading down the road.
///
"C'mon, I'll show you where we'll be staying!" You smiled as you parked the car, seeing how Vanessa's eyes widened in shock.
"Your sister lives here?"
"Yeah, well, it was our grandparents' house." You explained, shuffling slightly as you balanced the bags in your arms.
"Let me-"
"Just take the keys, I've got most of these... just not that one that's slipping, thank you!" You squeaked before Vanessa grabbed the bag you were dropping, the pair of you heading up the steps to the door.
///
Vanessa glanced up from where she was laying on her bed, pushing herself up by her elbows as her eyes lingered on you in the armchair in the corner.
"What are you reading?" Vanessa enquired, sitting up fully before pushing off the bed onto her feet, walking over to you.
"Oh... this, here." You vaguely answered, turning your hands to reveal the book's cover.
"Huh, never heard of it." Vanessa admitted, opening her mouth to ask another question when the two of you heard shouting from the hall.
"Ice skating is in an hour!"
"Couldn't she have announced that over the group text?" You grumbled, putting the book on the side table as you went to get ready.
"Hey, you okay with ice skating?" You enquired, leaning in the doorway as Vanessa had a solemn look on her face.
"Honestly? Can't say I've been." Vanessa admitted, slipping her hands into the pockets of her trousers.
"That's okay, I'll teach you." You smiled before heading out to get ready, leaving Vanessa standing in the guest room to figure out where she packed her gloves.
///
Vanessa paused as she spotted you on the ice rink, holding onto the wall with one hand as you playfully bantered with your sister with the other.
"I think your 'friend' is ready to skate now." Your sister smirked, nudging you as you glared.
"You're the worst." You stated before skating over to the gate where Vanessa was waiting.
"Hey, c'mon." You bit your lip, holding your hands out for Vanessa to take.
"Are you sure?" Vanessa stared at your hands, glancing up to meet your eyes as you nodded, taking her hands and pulling her gently onto the ice.
///
"By the way, I'm great at decorating gingerbread houses, but they usually collapse pretty quickly." You explained as you and Vanessa began to work on your gingerbread house together.
"Is the icing supposed to hold it up?" Vanessa quirked a brow, watching the gingerbread walls fall down almost immediately after you stood them up.
"Somehow, yeah." You shrugged, glancing up from where your chin was resting on the table, staring at the pieces of gingerbread house.
"So, how do you want to decorate this thing?"
///
Your sister smiled as she glanced over at where you and Vanessa had sat for the movie marathon. The two of you were barely awake, watching Home Alone play through lidded eyes, snacks long forgotten.
///
"What do you want to do today then? It's Christmas Eve and we have been graciously spared from kitchen duty." You let out a breath of relief, walking out of the bathroom as Vanessa got out of bed.
"Graciously spared?"
"That kitchen is chaos, every year. Not the fun chaos either, although I know some people who are the fun chaos... now I'm getting off-track. What do you want to do today?" You tilted your head to the side, smiling as Vanessa's eyes lit up with an idea.
///
You smiled as Vanessa walked slightly ahead of you, her footsteps appearing in the snow as the two of you trailed around the surrounding nature around your sister's house.
Sneakily taking photos when Vanessa wasn't looking, a shriek left your mouth as a snowball hit your face.
"Tag, you're it!"
///
"Tired much?" You laughed as you and Vanessa returned back to your sister's house. Soaking wet from all the melted snowballs pelted at each other as exhaustion washed over the two of you.
"Hey you two, there's some leftovers in the fridge, we're just watching some more movies." Your sister explained from the kitchen doorway, heading back to watch the movies when she'd finished talking.
"Ooh, leftovers!" Vanessa whispered as you led her to the fridge, your face lighting up at her smile, realising Vanessa was really enjoying herself here with you and your family.
///
Both you and Vanessa groaned as the next morning arrived, and the chaos began. People were up at 6am, dragging the others out of bed to open presents and help get everything in the oven on time, whilst others were distracted with board games or the remaining festive movies.
A smile crept its way onto your face as Vanessa found the present your sister had snuck into her pile. Vanessa had presents also had presents from you and Hailey, but it was that specific present that had you grinning.
"Is this... are you for real?" Vanessa froze as she opened the wrapping paper, glancing up to meet your smile.
"Yeah, we're for real. You're a part of this family, so you get a family sweater-ooof!" You squeaked as Vanessa launched towards you, hugging you tightly as she teared up.
"Thank you, thank you..."
"It's okay, V." You hummed, holding Vanessa in your arms as she leaned into your warmth.

day twenty five: moon | k.a. & v.r.
pairing: kevin atwater x vanessa rojas
word count: 230
As Kevin settles into the deckchair on his back porch, wrapped up in his warmest clothes, his phone starts to buzz in his pocket, and within an instant he’s answered the call and put it on speaker phone. The woman at the other end doesn’t bother saying hi, or asking how his day went because for once, she already knows that.
Due to the nature of Intelligence’s current case, and it coinciding with the undercover stint she’s currently involved in, Voight had pulled a few strings to get her working with the team again, even if it was just temporary. And those eight and a half hours that they’d spent basically in one another’s pocket, not a single member of the team arguing whenever Kevin insisted he’d go with Rojas.
But even so, tradition stands and rather than texting him from a new burner, Vanessa has the honour of giving it to him in person as they continue their monthly routine. It’s not quite as good as having one another in their arms, being able to enjoy the view in companionable silence, but getting to hear her breaths slow down until she starts to let out soft snores is the highlight of these nights.
Only another twenty eight days to go and they’ll be doing this all over again, looking up at the same starry night sky and full moon.
