Do the recent or right-now-ongoing crazy global weather scare you? Bother you? Interest you?
I'm pulling this from various media sources, because there is so much crazy weather happening now, or that has happened within the last couple of weeks, it seems like no single media source is picking it up.
From Heatmap AM:
Houston’s floods – More than 400 people in and around Houston, Texas, evacuated their homes over the weekend due to flooding. At least one person, a child, was killed. In one nearby county, more than 21 inches of rain fell over five days last week. The rain has tapered off but the cleanup has just begun.
Brazil’s rain – In Brazil’s southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, days of intense rain caused the Guaiba River to overflow and flood more than 340 cities, including the region’s capital of Porto Alegre. At least 78 people are dead and more than 115,000 have been forced to evacuate. One climatologist calledthe catastrophe “a disastrous cocktail” of climate change and the El Niño effect. “It looks like a scene out of a war,” said Rio Grande do Sul governor Eduardo Leite.
Chile’s fires – Fires in Chile’s Valparaiso region, fueled by an intense heat wave and enduring drought, have killed at least 51 people and burned more than 64,000 acres.
Kenya’s deluge – Flooding and landslides in Kenya from unrelenting rainfall have killed more than 200 people. It is still raining and the weather is forecast to worsen throughout the month of May.
Southeast Asia’s heat wave – A lengthy heat wave has shattered temperature records across Southeast Asia, forcing many schools to close. One weather historian called the heat wave “the most extreme event in world climatic history.”
From the Associated Press (AP):
A weekend spring storm that drenched the San Francisco Bay area and closed Northern California mountain highways also set a single-day snowfall record for the season on Sunday (May 5) in the Sierra Nevada. The wet weather system had mostly moved out of the state by Sunday morning, but officials warned that roads would remain slick after around two feet (60 centimeters) of snow fell in some areas of the Sierra. “Did anyone have the snowiest day of the 2023/2024 season being in May on their winter bingo card?” the University of California, Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab asked on the social platform X. The 26.4 inches (67 centimeters) of snowfall on Sunday beat the second snowiest day of the season — March 3rd — by 2.6 inches (6.6 centimeters), according to the lab.
From Yale Climate Connections:
For the first time since the 2010s, a high-risk outlook for severe weather (level 5 of 5) has been issued for parts of the Great Plains. The outlook was put in place at 8 a.m. EDT Monday, May 6, and updated at 12:30 p.m. EDT Monday by the NOAA/National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, as a busy few days of severe weather moved into high gear. Dozens of tornadoes could erupt by midweek, including in and near Oklahoma on Monday and across a broad swath of the mid-Mississippi and lower Ohio River valleys on Wednesday. Many of the worst tornado U.S. outbreaks of recent years have played out across the Mississippi Valley and Southeast, but multiple rounds of twisters have hammered the Plains since late April, taking at least seven lives and wreaking what will no doubt be hundreds of millions of dollars in damage.
From Wikipedia:
On 16 April 2024, heavy rains caused floods in the United Arab Emirates, affected cities of mainly Dubai and Sharjah, the northern Emirates, and different areas of the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah. According to the National Center for Meteorology (United Arab Emirates) , this was the country's heaviest rainfall recorded in 75 years. The floods in the Emirates were a part of the greater Persian Gulf floods.

A low-cost, tin-based catalyst can selectively convert carbon dioxide to three widely produced chemicals -- ethanol, acetic acid and formic acid. Lurking within the emissions from many industrial operations is an untapped resource -- carbon dioxide (CO2). A contributor of greenhouse gas and global warming, it could instead be captured and converted to value-added chemicals. In a collaborative project involving the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory, Northern Illinois University and Valparaiso University, scientists report a family of catalysts that efficiently converts CO2 into ethanol, acetic acid or formic acid. These liquid hydrocarbons are among the most produced chemicals in the U.S. and are found in many commercial products. For example, ethanol is a key ingredient in numerous household products and an additive to nearly all U.S. gasoline.

Maroon football fans have likely heard of the kazoo marching band featuring Big Ed, the world’s largest kazoo. But what about the other halftime attraction of the ’70s, the calliope? It seems there was a bit of a calliope craze in the first years of varsity football’s return to the University, with the Maroon even advertising it as a headliner at the games: “THE MAROONS AND CALLIOPE MEET VALPARAISO,” read the announcement for the October 8, 1971, face-off. Invented in the mid-19th century, calliopes produce sound by sending steam through a collection of train whistles of various sizes—the instruments are notoriously loud and off-key. In his boater hat and sleeve garters, calliope player Darwin C. Shoger added a bit of Stagg-era flair to the new football field. Did you witness the 1970s calliope revival? Tell us about it at [email protected].

nothing without love. ( snapshots of max arciniega and gustavo fring, throughout the years. written from the perspective of max, and based upon a backstory built around breaking bad canon. ) please do not repost elsewhere. reblogs welcome.
valparaiso, chile. june 1981.
in the years previous, your life has been a race: feet dragging through sand, one heavy weight to another, the word relay becoming absent in your seventeenth year of life. therein lies the absence of a hand, passing one heaviness to another, allowing a singular exhale to find the next.
a steady rumble of: i’ve got it this week, maximino, and one hand — brief, ghosting — clasped around your shoulder, becomes the last memory you have of your brother. from then on, the weight becomes your own. the weeks following drag on, and on, and on. it seems to never stop, with every bite of yours, becoming a break. one snap of your spine at a time, until a hand — steady, reliable — on the small of your back aligns you once more.
this moment in particular, reminds you of this. gustavo’s touch relieves any trace of what once had been heavy, present in every corner of your hand-built-life: tugging you out from the rubble, and into a rapture. in these minutes, you don’t allow for an exhale. instead, you find your inhale between a kiss that tastes of bittered coffee, and sweet, sweet, nothings, while your hand — pious, unwavering — slides behind the back of his neck.
your hair, still wet, yet now absent of seasalt, drips an imprint onto his shirt.
in an earlier time, you may have apologized. (for the kiss, for the water, for the heaviness.) now, you tip into a sun-soaked grin, and fall into him further.
dusseldorf, germany. march 1983.
there’s a morning that feels like the sun has risen for the first time. it’s a marvel of a moment, with all the succinct simplisticity that gustavo provides. some people, you think, would hate the mundane. they’d yawn, stretch their arms, and chase after something ravenous. but as you watch gustavo straighten his tie, blinking into the mirror with the blank-slate-face you’ve come to know well, you think simplicity, in all of its forms, is far more exhilarating.
your feet find the ground in silence, moving to align the front of your shoulders with his, and replace his hands with your own. you straighten his tie, press a kiss to his cheek, and nestle the curve of your jaw into the crook of his neck. his presence becomes a tether to reality, knitting itself into the very essence of your grin; every echo of your laughter. without him, you wonder where you would be. there’s a pause — a brief fraction of a moment designated towards this thought — before you abandon it entirely. any reason to fantasize of otherwise is obsolete, washed away as he presses his lips to your forehead. this action, however brief, reminds you that to chase after anything ravenous is a waste.
you’d much prefer the significance of satiation.
george town, the cayman islands. september 1984.
the photo itself means nothing in the face of his smile: ear to ear, tugging a radiance onto features that elicits a thought of how something so bright could exist on this earth without burning it whole. it blinds you, inching into every corner of your own grin until you can’t tell where his ends, and yours begins.
to anyone else, this may be an infinitesimal moment. to you, it is a fraction of the universe, sliced out in just the right dose. gifted, on a silver platter. to you, it is the final piece of the puzzle, slotted into a space of your heart that reminds it to keep on beating.
one infinitesimal moment to the next, one fraction of the universe to another: to you, this moment is everything.
the andes, chile. november 1985.
gustavo says, we are insurmountable, and you believe him.
he says it fervently, intently, with the ever-lasting and ardent declaration that you imagine a prophet to have. as if his words, merely a promise, are nothing but a statement of fact. some years ago, you may have laughed — as any would, upon gazing at heights that far surpass your own. but halfway up the mountain, fifty percent of the way there, with beginnings that smolder into a fire that’s now merely smoke in the distance, you think his words are closer to a scripture, than a story.
there will always be nonbelievers. the faithless, the doubtful. once, you may have been one of them. skeptical of your own future, hesitant to invest in his. but gustavo says, we are insurmountable, and you are no longer staring at heights that tower over your own. you may only be five foot seven (on a good day) and halfway up the mountain, but you think that with only an outstretch of your hand, you could hold the whole world in your palms.
you lace your fingers with his, and wonder if you already do.
michoacán, mexico. february 1986.
recipes, your mother said, are nothing without love.
you’ve scrawled every step down, crafted all the necessary pieces to align into memory, and folded a love letter within your own creation. the word hermanos, in contrast to it all, tugs a full bellied laugh from you; your head, shaking briefly at the mere thought.
it doesn’t bother you, as some may believe it should. the story of your life has never been written for anyone else’s consumption but your own: once, swallowed down in one hard-to-digest moment to the next. now, it’s a smooth sip of sweetness; your honeyed heartbeat pitter pattering against the word hermanos. like drizzle on a windowpane, tapping against the glass, in a reminder of your shelter from an ever-present storm.
you write every recipe in pin-point accuracy. in careful script that tells of one part fable, and one part truth. a bond, surely, but nothing of brothers. only a step closer to good friends.
however, there are some things, you think, that are implied. some things, that you needn't add to a list of ingredients, regardless of the presence of such.
after all — recipes are nothing, without love.

//:: T H E B A S I C S
name: maria isabel irigaray lombardi
nickname(s): marisa
age: twenty-nine
gender: cis woman
place of birth: colonia, uruguay
birthday: march 14th, 1994
zodiac : pisces sun, capricorn moon and leo rising
height: 5′7″
occupation: sales associate at inherited escapes and aspiring poet
//:: T H E B I O G R A P H Y
tw: abandonment
maria isabel "marisa" irigaray was born in colonia, uruguay, and spent the initial five years of her life there before her family relocated to montevideo. born into a family with a banker father and a receptionist mother, marisa's upbringing was shaped by her parents sacrificing their dream careers for a more secure livelihood. while her father came to terms with the curtailment of his musical aspirations, her mother, an aspiring painter, struggled to move past the relinquishment of her artistic dreams. over time, her mother harbored resentment towards her husband and children for the role they played in truncating her ambitions.
despite her mother's usual cold and distant demeanor, there were instances when, under the influence of alcohol, she would engage in lengthy conversations with marisa about the profound significance of art. ironically, these intoxicated moments with her mother ignited a curiosity for art within marisa. she experimented with various forms, including painting, singing, and sculpting, but ultimately discovered her true calling in the realm of words.
at the age of eight, marisa's mother reached a breaking point and chose to abandon the family. devastated by this abandonment, marisa's father, though successful in providing a comfortable life financially, became immersed in work and frequently neglected his two children emotionally.
at 18, she attended university, majoring in literature. it was in her junior year that she seized the opportunity to spend a semester as an exchange student in valparaiso. it was during this time that marisa developed a deep affection for the city and vowed to return someday.
after completing her studies back in uruguay, she graduated and worked as a teacher for a few years. simultaneously, she dedicated her free time to crafting poems and actively sought a publishing house for her work.
one year ago, she made the bold decision to relocate to valparaiso. opting for a less demanding job than teaching, she sought a position at a bookstore, allowing her more time for writing. embracing a modest lifestyle, she now resides in the city.
//:: H E A D C A N O N S
marisa holds a special affinity for mario benedetti's "la tregua," making it her favorite book. additionally, she admires the works of horacio quiroga and jorge luis borges. among her preferred poets are gabriela mistral, rosario castellanos, sylvia plath, and pablo neruda.
influenced by her father's musical tastes, marisa grew up immersed in spanish rock, with a particular fondness for bands like soda stereo, héroes del silencio, and caifanes.
her upbringing also instilled in her a love for cooking, a skill passed down by her mother from their italian immigrant roots. marisa takes pride in her ability to prepare homemade pasta, with cannelloni being her signature dish.
her early education included attending an italian school, but her proficiency in the language has diminished over time since her mother's abandonment. despite being a bit rusty, she still retains some knowledge of italian.
while marisa often mentions "before sunrise" as one of her top 5 favorite movies, her true favorite is "mamma mia!"
unbeknownst to many, she harbors a fear of water due to a childhood accident at the age of five, which prevented her from learning how to swim. she keeps this detail private, sharing it with only a few people.

closed starter for OMAR ( @scmantic ) omar's apartment
˗ˏˋ ✦ ⟶ what a month.
first nolan finds out that not just one, but two of his brothers somehow picked valparaiso— separately— to move to. then he learns that sariyah also just moved in next door. then he lost his favourite pen.
“ i really think i did something to piss the universe off. “ he decides out loud as he flicks open the pizza box he just put down on omar’s counter. if anyone is going to understand the pity party nolan is having, it’ll be omar. as payment, he brought pizza.
“ that, or i’m somehow just the world’s unluckiest guy. “ seems unlikely to nolan considering things were going pretty well before a handful of weeks ago. taking a slice, he lifts it up towards his mouth. “ please tell me your month has gone better ? “

NEW FROM FINISHING LINE PRESS: Walk Like the Bird Flies by Susan Ayres
On SALE now! Pre-order Price Guarantee: https://www.finishinglinepress.com/product/walk-like-the-bird-flies-by-susan-ayres/
The prose poems and lyric verses in Walk Like the Bird Flies invite you to explore identity, #history, #nature, #myth, and #art. From Judge Roy Bean to Medea, from Étienne Trouvelot to Princess Di, these poems walk like the bird flies, traveling an emotive journey through love and loss, in imagined and actual landscapes.
Susan Ayres is a poet, lawyer, and translator. Her work has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize, and has appeared in a wide variety of literary and scholarly journals including Yale Journal of Law and Feminism, Sycamore Review, Cimarron Review, The South Carlina Review, and Valparaiso Review. She holds an MFA in creative writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts, and teaches at Texas A&M University School of Law in Fort Worth, Texas. Visit www.psusanayres.com.
PRAISE FOR Walk Like the Bird Flies by Susan Ayres
These poems transport us from Texas desert landscapes to New England mountains to Adriatic tavernas, festivals, and landmarks, and at the same time they offer vivid confrontations with the elements of the natural world—mud, fire, water, forests, the wind that possibly “[carries] messages from beyond”—treating both foreign cities and nature’s manifestations as phenomena to observe and honor through the eyes of an estranged but receptive traveler. Susan Ayres fuses images from inner and outer landscapes, raising questions that can’t be answered and perspectives that can’t be contained but nevertheless offer sparks of revelation in poem after poem.
–Leslie Ullman, (The You That All Along Has Housed You and Library of Small Happiness)
“Listen to me as one listens to the rain,” Susan Ayres begins this incredible journey, because only when she listens to the rain can her imagination wander and guide us through a history and geography that is at once personal and cosmic in its reach. Indeed, she ends with a long poem that itself carries us from “from silkworms to / Skies.” But what is even more exciting, and so skillfully done, is the kind counterpointing that moves us from a medieval bridge in Slovenia to the American west to a contemporary beach to Led Zeppelin, a combination that requires great skill and vision. And skill and vision are what we have here, giving us a new sense and appreciation of our world, for Ayres has given us poetry’s version of Galileo’s Starry Messenger.
