I don’t think Valleyfest was Demetri’s gay awakening—you don’t talk with uh. That Accent in high school by accident—but I do think it was when he realized he was Down Bad™️ for Hawk

the air buzzes with excitement & laughter from valleyfest, & live music from the band at the other end of the festival cuts through conversations. you're definitely not going anywhere near that part of the festival for a while... actually, maybe the whole night. too many people, too many sounds, sights, & emotions to accidentally absorb. no thank you. colorful food trucks line the gigantic plot of even terrain where the festival is taking place, their enticing aromas wafting through the air, mixing with the sounds of live music & easy, cheerful chatter. your friends have been looking forward to this night—an escape from the relentless karate war drama that's been engulfing your lives for the past year. you, robby, & your friends from both eagle fang & miyagi-do ...or ex-miyagi dos, you guess you should say. even if it hurts.
mr. larusso closed down the dojo because of the all valley loss, & your deaths? ALL YOUR FUCKING FAULT. if you didn't confront silver, maybe the dojo would still be open, & none of this would be happening. you want nothing more than to relax & enjoy each other's company, especially with robby. you've been reveling in the bliss of your new relationship, feeling a sense of hope you've longed for amidst the chaos.
still, a knot of apprehension twists in your stomach as you scan the crowd, spotting auryn lurking in the shadows near one of the games, a bored expression on his face, his hands shoved into the pockets of his hoodie. deep down, you aren't surprised to see him here, but you hoped tonight will be free of any drama, a night to celebrate friendships & love without the weight of past wounds threatening to ruin the moment. with auryn here, though... well, he's never been one to let you stray too far from him.
standing frozen in the middle of the festival, the event continues to swirl around you, people passing by without a care in the world. your heart hammers in your chest as auryn’s voice cuts through the noise, dripping with that familiar poison. your friends are scattered throughout valleyfest, blissfully unaware of your paralysis as you stare at your ex-boyfriend.
your hand slips from robby's, falling limply at your side.
"you're here, ethan? so soon after getting out of the hospital from your little... unfortunate accident with silver?" the mention of silver makes your shoulders tense automatically. your murderer. you hate how easily his words slip under your skin. but it’s too late to take it back now. your reaction makes auryn's eyes flash with twisted satisfaction. "you always make everything about you, ethan," auryn sneers, his eyes locking onto yours with that cold, condescending smile that makes your skin crawl. "it's so selfish & self-centered. it's like you want to be miserable. you push people away, then blame them when they give up. i mean, who could really love someone like you?"
his words slice through you, the same twisted script he's used a hundred times before, warping reality until you start questioning if he's right. your chest tightens, & you can't tell if it's the anger or the doubt twisting in your gut. he's not right. not anymore. but the weight of his voice, that old pull, still claws at you, reminding you of how small he once made you feel.
"you know that your laundry list of mental & emotional issues are in your head, right?" he continues, voice deceptively soft now, almost pitying. you flinch. "i've always tried to help you, but you sabotage everything in a desperate attempt to gain attention. i don't know why i even bother anymore. why i didn't just leave you. maybe you were right. maybe that mental hospital you wanted to go to would have helped."
a hot rush of shame floods your cheeks as auryn's words hang in the air, each one a bitter reminder of the secrets you had hoped would stay buried. the truth claws at every nerve ending, raw & exposed; you had wanted to go back to that place, not just because of robby's betrayal, but because you felt like a ghost in a world gripped by cobra kai's influence. the abuse you endured at auryn's hands felt like, still feels like, a weight crushing your chest, suffocating you, reminding you of how easy it would be to slip back into the numbing fog of institutionalization. you wanted to escape, to hide away from the pain, but now, the truth is laid bare before robby, & the thought of being weak, of wanting to run away from everything—especially from robby both in the past & present—makes your stomach churn.
you have no idea what the fuck robby's going to say if he brings it up later, if your boyfriend will look at you differently because of this moment, because of a weakness you showed around auryn, & every moment after. that worries you.
Tumblr media
"i..." your mouth feels dry, the words you want to scream stuck in your throat. tears blur your vision as you instinctually look down at the ground, breaking eye contact with him. you can't shake the suffocating fog auryn always drags you into. but now, it's different. you're not alone anymore. your gaze flickers to robby—he's standing right next you, & your heart stutters because you have a horrible feeling what might fly out of auryn's mouth next.
auryn's smirk deepens, his eyes sliding towards @taughtpain, & you instinctively move closer, shielding your boyfriend, as if auryn's words won't affect robby if you throw yourself into the line of fire. it wouldn't be the first time you've put yourself in danger for him. "oh god, don't tell me you believe his little victim act too, keene. poor, poor ethan, always playing the helpless martyr. you have no fucking idea how hard i worked to keep him together, & this is how he repays me. leaving me, but having the same nervous disposition, & more weakness."
he shifts his attention back to you, his voice dropping lower, more intimate, like he's trying to reel you back in, trying to regain the hold he once had on you. "you know i'm right, eth." a bolt of hot disgust & panic shoots down your spine at the use of your nickname, said in that deceptively sweet tone. auryn isn't anything like that. "you always do. you're just confused right now, but you'll see. you always come back to me."
your breath catches in your throat, heart slamming in your chest as that familiar weight presses down on you. but now, that pull feels hollow; his words fail to sink in like they used to. not with robby here. not with everything you've been through to break free from auryn's control. but still, the fog is there, trying to cloud your mind, to confuse you.
then, out of nowhere, you hear it—a whisper slicing through the chaos, cold & calculating. "you're weak, mr. wilson. you'll always be a failure." silver. his voice makes panic surge through you, sharp as a knife, & you feel like you're drowning. what if they're both right? what if you really are nothing?
& then it happens.
while you're trying to discern fact from fiction, truth from lie from manipulation, instinctually listening to silver's voice, robby moves fast. his fist swings out & cracks into auryn's face with a sickening thud. you barely register the impact at first—the sound, the way auryn's head jerks back, his body snapping to the side with the momentum of his head, like a puppet whose strings just got cut.
you blink, the world blurring around you as auryn clutches his jaw, eyes wide with disbelief & anger, glaring darkly at robby.
"what the fuck?!" auryn spits, blood pooling at the corner of his mouth, his hand still hovering near the spot robby hit, eyes blown wide with the same rage you've seen a thousand times. but now it's directed at your boyfriend, clear as day. it makes your hands shake, but you're not totally sure in what way. fear? anger? or maybe it's both? "are you insane?!"
you're frozen, your mind struggling to catch up with what just happened. robby punched him. for you. your heart pounds louder in your ears as the shock crashes over you. robby stood up for you, threw that punch when you couldn't, when auryn's words had you trapped.
your ex-boyfriend stares between the two of you, furious, stunned, his rage burning white-hot, but for once, his words are caught in his throat. he tries to muster up another twisted argument, but you can't even hear him. you're too busy trying to wrap your head around what the fuck just happened. robby, your robby, stepped in, threw that punch, & shattered something in the air around you.
"robby..." you breathe, your voice barely a whisper as your throat tightens under the weight of everything crashing in—relief, worry, surprise, gratitude, & most prominent of all, love, amplified by your emotional feedback loop. every emotion fights for space, threatening to overwhelm you, but one thing is clear: robby stood up for you.

This year, we approach the 49th annual Valleyfest, formerly known as the Spring Arts Festival. Spring Arts Festival was first held at LVC in 1970. Much like Valleyfest today, it featured live music, arts and crafts, and food.
Pictured is a student tacking up a poster for the 8th annual Spring Arts Fest in 1978.

Super important headcanon that needs brought up again is that @senseibalance has been Tory’s hero since she was a kid. She watched the All Valley tapes (bc her mom was a classmate and close to some of the cobras so she kept them) and his story inspired her and was part of what kept her hopeful growing up in bad circumstances. Having that in her mind all those years, that is the reason why she really wanted to do karate. Daniel showed that even a poor kid from Reseda could be the best, be somebody, even when surrounded by all these people with rich families and connections and all kinds of advantages. And she wanted to do the same. She wanted to prove that she could be somebody, too; that her circumstances didn’t define her. It’s why winning the All Valley was so important to her. To almost everyone else, it was really just a trophy. An accolade to put on a shelf next to others. But for Tory it was proof that she had a place in this world and that she had value and that she deserved to be here as much as anyone else, regardless of her financial status or where she came from or who her parents are or anything she had done wrong in the past. It was hope to her.

Daniel's Trigger Moments (big and small)
I divided these into what I'd consider "big" moments and "smaller" moments, based on a completely non-scientific method of "how much does this change Daniel's motivations/how intense are his reactions to it/is this more of a trigger on top of another, more intense trigger"
I don't know if anyone already did this, but it tracks very well with Daniel's decision-making on the show. A lot of the time he genuinely is a level-headed guy, even quite far on into the plot, when he's probably just emotionally in the Badness constantly.
His worst decisions - with the exception of raising the rent in season 1 (although he backed off after that, realising he'd gone too far when Amanda rightfully tore into him) - come generally right off the back of Something Triggering them
Spoilers for season 4
1. Big: Seeing the Cobra Kai sign (s1ep2) (everything he does to escalate after this until episode 9 is driven by this moment, although influenced by Johnny also escalating, albeit in less intense ways)
- His suspicion of Kyler when Johnny tells him that he's violent (s1ep3)
- Rehashing Cobra Kai at the All-Valley Committee meeting (s1ep7)
2. Big: Discovering that Robby was lying to him (s1ep9) (he walks this back in the very next episode, after understanding that Robby wasn't being malicious)
3. Big: Robby tells him Cobra Kai could take over the Valley (s1ep10) (Daniel walks back on this in the next episode, making the healthier choice to let it go)
4. Big: Daniel discovers that Kreese is alive and training with Johnny (s2ep2) (this is when Daniel makes the "snake in the grass" commercial, but actually doesn't escalate further until later)
- Johnny and Kreese disrupt the Valleyfest demo (s2ep3) (I don't know if this was a big trigger, so much as a confirmation of the previous trauma-based gut-feeling he'd been having, but he still doesn't really escalate based off of this)
5. Big: Hawk and others destroy the Miyagi-dojo (s2ep5) (Daniel still doesn't actually escalate, other than his one kneejerk reaction of facing down Johnny at the dojo, because at this point Johnny and Kreese and Cobra Kai and Terry is all the same to him)
6. Big: Kreese directly threatens him (s2ep7) (it's Kreese who really calls this a war, and Daniel is horrified by it, but he still doesn't really escalate. His marriage is falling apart at this point, because he's spiralling/hyperfocusing on Miyagi-do)
7. Big: Daniel discovers Sam stayed at Johnny's (s2ep9) (this is probably the most "woah why'd he do that" that I've seen people talk about and I've always thought it made sense because he is this close to breaking and so high strung -- and it's Sam -- we see Daniel doing this over and over again, when things get really bad for him, he hunkers down, he lashes out, he overprotects - especially with Sam
also after the school fight he is ready to escalate, but backs down after Amanda tells him to)
After this Daniel goes from on-the-ropes with the dealership to thriving in Okinawa, truly hot girl summer shit. In fact, in s3ep7 we're dealing with Sam's triggers and Daniel's second vague mention of his time in Cobra Kai and the aftermath, but he's relatively okay talking about it in his particular self-censoring way
- Daniel sees Chozen again (s3ep4) (I think Daniel dealt with this very well actually, probably because Chozen also deals with it well (and hilariously))
also in s3ep8 is the first time? Daniel and Johnny meet since s3ep2?
8. Big: The Cobra Kai students break in at the LaRusso house (s3ep10) (I'd argue this is the only big trigger all season. And it all ends with him teaming up with Johnny and not committing a murder so yay!)
9. Big: Terry Silver shows up at Miyagi-do (s4ep4/5) (okay I am currently rewatching everything and have only seen season 4 once, BUT I am pretty sure that Daniel making his "I should take over" speech to Johnny is the first time he makes a really bad call this season and it's 100% off the back of Terry returning - yes he was kind of prissy and mean about Johnny's abilities as a teacher occasionally, but they were working that out. Here is where it all goes wrong)
10. Big: Terry taunts Daniel (s4ep6) (and yes, immediately after it's all gone wrong, Terry fucking digs in and gleefully tells him that he liked it/that he had a little bit of Cobra Kai in him all along - no wonder Daniel wanted to make a hard split between Miyagi-do and anything Cobra Kai that could "taint" it, he was so afraid that Terry was right, and this conversation probably just confirmed it!
Arguably the whole latter half of the season in terms of his overreactions - Daniel being scared of Sam training with Johnny and his eventual intense reaction with Anthony (breaking the ipad) - it all comes from these two meetings with Terry spilling over that already overfull cup of his
It's interesting that these are the only two interactions they have all season, but they affect Daniel so intensely... what will that look like when Terry has more of his attention on him?)
Anyway that's all I've got, interesting to track his responses dependent on these moments, I think they all make perfect sense/his reactions to them make sense
also as several people have said: Daniel has tried to tell people about Cobra Kai and his experiences, but due to a. his own muddled telling and b. the suspension of disbelief needed to believe that geriatric karate coaches are torturing teens, nobody really takes his emotions seriously
I wonder what his decision-making will be like in s5, when on the one hand Terry... kind of won? but on the other, he has a much steadier presence with Chozen there

Camping at Valleyfest
Camping at Valleyfest #Getonmyland #FamilyFestival #OrchardPigs #campsitecharacters #PassthePigs #Giveaway
Not all festivals are the same and it is really good to hear about these smaller, lesser-known ones such as Valleyfest. The youngest two really enjoyed Livestock last year and were really disappointed that it wasn’t on again this year; so they were super excited to hear that we had been invited by Orchard Pig (to Valleyfest). Plus it was a fantastic opportunity to put up our new tent from Blacks…

The Cobra Kai creators sensed your plea and created a perfect Hallmark "everyone in the small town comes out to the Winter/Holiday Festival where Our Heroes engage in various amusing Escapades amongst the Villagers where they can Pretend they are still at odds but are instead falling ever deeper in Love" scene.
It even has the plot points in place - Down-on-his-luck Handyman with Heart and Hair of Gold experiences Circumstances that bring him back into the Orbit of his former high school squeeze and he heeds the Call to Pitch Woo by returning to his Roots via opening a Karate Dojo and he is compelled to perform several increasingly-cringey Acts of Courtship and Attention-Getting, culminating in his Declaration of Love in front of all their mutual Friends and Neighbors. Be mine, my Belovéd!
Welcome to Valleyfest! And gaze upon that absolute unit.
Now that we are firmly in Hallmark Christmas Movie season I wonder again: why hasn’t Billy ever been cast in one? They’re filled with his 80s and 90s peers, most have religious undertones, they don’t seem that time consuming to make…why is he not the hot single father who’s given up on Christmas and has his holiday spirit saved by the beautiful young librarian in town or some shit like that. Get on that, Hallmark. Call him now.
Anyway, here’s a hot pic. Cast this guy.

Facial In A Field
I had a facial in the middle of a field and I have to say, without any exaggeration or unnecessary embellishment, that it was one of the best facials I have ever had in my life. Perhaps it was partly due to the fact that I was at a festival with my kids (we’ll come back to that, I must have been mad) and the opportunity to lie still with my eyes closed was absolute heaven all on its own, but I think that mostly it was down to the highly proficient hands of my skilful Weleda facialist.
You may be wondering why on earth I would be at a festival with my kids: I asked myself the very same question approximately three minutes after arriving in the car park. As one child (Ted, two) screamed because we’d brought the wrong socks with us and the other (Angelica, four) repeatedly asked to see her new sleeping bag, like some sort of possessed battery-operated talking doll, the adults manhandled various large and heavy packages from the boot of the car onto the world’s smallest trolley.
People on social media always seem to make “festivals with kids” look fun. I’ve decided that they are either superhuman and find the whole thing easy or they’re completely and utterly mad and thrive on chaos, sweaty tents and dragging their small children around in glorified wheelbarrows. I suppose I just don’t see the point in festivals if each and every benefit of said festival is entirely obliterated by the presence of your children, who need constant entertainment, incessant feeding and who refuse to go to sleep. Ever.
And I suppose that I don’t even really appreciate the benefits of a festival full-stop, because a) I dislike camping and b) if I drink too much I get cystitis and cystitis does not mix well with festival toilets. Oh and c) I hate crowds and loud noises.
At ValleyFest, thankfully, there were very few crowds; if ever there was a “starter festival”, one to ease yourself in with, then this would be it. Just south of Bristol, set around a beautiful lake, it was more like a giant party than a festival – there was a friendly feel and a relaxed, sunny vibe. Yeo Valley were giving out free milk. There was a big tractor to help you take your bags up to the campsite. The loudest music stopped at 11pm so that parents could get some sleep. Loos were the type you get at weddings, with sinks and lights and so on, rather than the half-door monstrosities I’ve seen elsewhere. Best of all, Weleda (one of my long-time skincare brand favourites) were doing facials and hand massages and generally offering some much-needed respite and refuge to those in need of some TLC.
My sister and I virtually sprinted to the Weleda reception, so desperate were we to get ourselves into a horizontal position that didn’t involve an airbed. And the Weleda tent was like entering some sort of canvas sanctuary, one filled with skincare delights and gentle-voiced people. It was calming even with the booming of the bass from the main music stage, which was only a few dozen yards away. (A few dozen yards? Hark at me! This is how you speak at a festival.)
I started this post by praising the skill of my facialist and I shall praise her again; Megan had the hands of an angel. But a firm and thorough angel, not one of those ones with a soft and whimsical touch, not a weedy angel who administers facial movements with a whisper of a stroke here and a tickle of the nose there. (Can’t stand a tickle-touch, either in a facial or a massage. It makes me both uncomfortable and deeply annoyed. Tickling is such a waste of time. Don’t tease me, just get on with it.)
So yes, thankfully Megan wasn’t a tickler, the pressure was just right and – JOY! – she delved straight in with a massage even as she was cleansing my face! A cleanse with purpose! There’s nothing worse than a prolonged cleanse with eighty-five products, the sucking noise of cream being pressed onto skin punctuated by the frequent wringing out of the flannel right behind your head. If I’m going to be cleansed for more than a minute then I want the experience to have a sensory edge, ie an extra bit of massage that’ll make my eyes roll back into my head and send me into a state of unparalleled bliss.
It rarely happens, but it happened in my Facial in a Field. It was only a half an hour slot, which you’d think would be dire for your ability to relax, but I was in and out of consciousness for the entire time, and it felt like a week. I genuinely thought halfway through that the 30 minutes printed on the ticket had been a typo. It was sublime and more rejuvenating than a day in a posh spa. Half an hour! Thirty minutes! It takes me that long to remember the password for my online banking!
I often come out of a “branded” facial and feel a bitter disappointment that the focus of the whole treatment was on the products and not on the physical action. When the facialist applies four different masks, a scrub, five oils and all the time whispers the names of the products into my ear like some kind of subliminal messaging exercise. This is the Alvira scrub, the Alvira scrub, the Alviraaaaaaa….. But when a facial relies on very few products, it tends to become more about the handiwork of the therapist and not about ingredients. And this is what I prefer.
Last year I went for a very expensive branded facial (actually, a half an hour one again, I think it was at an event) and the products being used were all well over £150 each. I was treated to a running commentary about each one, what the benefits were, why it was being used, how it was being applied. I felt like saying “I never get to lie in silence with my eyes closed and be touched, just be quiet and rub my face!”
Which would have been rude, so I didn’t, but it was the biggest waste of half an hour. If I wanted to paste masks on myself with a spatula and listen to pointless chatter I’d do it at home. So well done Weleda for just choosing the most minimal product line-up and relying on skill rather than marketing spiel.
The products used in the Radiance Restoring Routine (which you could do yourself, albeit without Megan’s Magical Touch) are all massively gentle and gorgeous and have all, at one time or another, been included in my skincare favourites. Almond Cleansing Lotion (see my review here), Almond Soothing Facial Oil for massage and then Skin Food (see review here) used as a mask and then to moisturise. (I recently raved about Skin Food Light – you can read that review here, it’s a great alternative to the very rich and slightly greasy original Skin Food.)
I’ve whittled that product list right down to the bare bones, but I should point out that there were a number of extra twists and turns, including compresses using flannels soaked with Weleda bath milk (Rosemary to start, Lavender to finish) and eye de-puffers made from camomile tea bags. Nothing fussy, nothing outrageously priced and a clever use of their incredible bath milks.
You can find a list of Weleda advisors, all trained in this facial routine, on the website here. There’s no dedicated place to go in and have the facial (please make this happen, Weleda!) but if you put your postcode in it brings up your nearest Wellbeing Advisors. If you’re in Cheshire then – lucky you – your nearest might be the wonderful Megan. I would highly, highly recommend. If I enjoyed my treatment in the middle of a festival field, after a sleepless night in a sweat box and Basement Jaxx anthems thundering into my brain, imagine how much you’d enjoy it in a normal situation. Knowing that you didn’t have to return to three crazed small people who had raided the emergency cool box and eaten six jellies, four packets of cheese Doritos and eight Ella’s Kitchen breakfast pouches.
The website for ValleyFest is here and my verdict on it, overall, would be very good. Incredibly clean, really friendly, great atmopshere and lovely setting. Just leave the small people with granny. We ended up absconding on the Saturday afternoon after our facials because the kids had reached fever pitch and we couldn’t sit in our tents because they were too hot. Packing up and getting our stuff back to the car without the help of the handy tractor was a low point. We had to do a version of the walk of shame through the middle of the whole festival; me carrying Ted, a backpack, two food bags and a Trunki, Mr AMR looking for all the world like someone who had spent the past few hours fighting zombies in a post-apocalyptic swamp. Families stared as we dropped tent pegs, fought back tears and ushered toddlers along, trailing the bedraggled ribbons of a broken kite behind us. It was grim. At one point I thought my heart was going to fail, but it wasn’t as bad as the time I nearly died of exhaustion, so it doesn’t quite make it into the over-exertion hall of fame…
