WIP: Valkon

For the 11th Sharetember prompt, "Share a WIP", I've chosen the first two paragraphs from the first draft of my first (to be published) story:

"Humans are a curious lot. They are usually present in any story you read, yet you’d be forgiven for thinking the authors must have had some disagreements regarding their nature. Some are as fragile as feathers, others as sturdy as stones. Some can move mountains, others can barely bend a stick. Indeed, there seem to be many different types of these creatures, but this story does not revolve around them. 

Please, forgive my fantasy and suspend your disbelief, as I am about to shift your focus to a much different, yet in many ways very similar, kind of people. But first, let us get a general sense of where we are. We do not have a map."

Valkon isn’t the first story I’ve written, but it’s the first one I’ve decided to publish. Set in the old Scandinavia of folklore, this tale takes you on a journey of self-discovery. 

Moving into the winter season, I thought a fairytale told by an old man sitting in his favourite armchair by the fireplace would be a nice way to introduce you to my writing. I’ve been working on this story for a while, and I’m both anxious and excited about sharing this world with you. Right now, I’m considering whether I should release it as a book or a serial where you discover Valkon’s journey bit by bit. What do you think - would you like to see it in parts?

Heyo,, could you tell me a bit more about valkon stuff? I've read the original post and such but I'm still a bit confused about it. Is it a strictly a plural thing? Or is it something where the physical and mental doesn't line up?

Sure! It's closer to identity phenomena like otherkin, therian, trans, some forms of plurality, etc., but in a more external and integrated sense. It's not a plural only thing, so you could be a singlet vakalon or a plural vakalon.

A vakalon is essentially someone who can externalize their identity so that they're experiencing it (in a subjective sense) in this world. Any identity can do this, so trans, therian, kin, plural, human, etc. vakalons are all possible. (This is also why it looks like there's a mashup of different experiences underneath the label - they're all externalized, but beyond that the details vary.) They could see it, hear it, experience it as if it were in this world, as if they physically were their identity despite that not being the case. Basically, imagine the concept of a werewolf or shapeshifter, but subjective and not limited to wolves or even species identity.

Would you say your oc is bashful about intimate conversations, or are they the blunt one that makes everyone else uncomfortable?

Oh, Zu'fanda Pampya is incredibly blunt and free with "intimate" discussions; if she is interested in someone - or even just wants to keep them off-balanace. Innuendos are rather common. She did this brazenly with Pol'fenn when he was her "guest". She even did it to Ashara once, and the Togruta turned from orange to red. Her favorite target is probably Talos; she enjoys seeing him flustered. Andronikos was the only one who played right back at her. So he ultimately won her heart.

How well or not well does your oc take constructive criticism?

Because of her strained relationship with her father, it took Illaynah Antilles a long time to learn to take constructive criticism in a positive way. Her father's critiques were - in fact - self-serving and harsh. He didn't want Illaynah leaving for the academy. Eventually, enough positive mentors came into her life that she learned to deal with this. But Jorgan's constant challenges still bothered her.

Is your oc easy to disappoint? How so?

Valkon Tuum - with the exception of Mako - is exceptionally easy to disappoint. He's an apex predator, and needs a reason not to kill most people. He's probably threatened to gut Gault a few times, and don't get me started on Skadge. That time Blizz accidentally dismantled the hyperdrive? Mako had to PHYSICALLY INTERPOSE HERSELF. Yeah… he's dark.

How does your oc relax? Describe it.

Teeanah Malvern has a number of ways to relax, including sunbathing by her lake, or emmersing herself in her hot tub. (Often she does this with a companion. Sometimes someone massaging her.) But even then, her mind is always moving. (And scheming.)
