HEY! what do you use to record songs with? cuz a lot of DAWs u can download plug-ins for and I have two free ones called ValhallaSupermassive and ValhallaFreQEcho, and if you slap them on a distorted guitar and messed with them a little bit u can definitely get a drone metal sound, theres also another plug in that can stretch audio recordings extremely far, cant remember the name of it tho! i hope this helps!

Whoa!! Thank you so much!! I use FL and sometimes Ableton as of right now! I've used Audacity and the Paulstretch effect on things before too, not sure if thats similar to what you're describing but it was interesting! I'll definitely look into giving those plugins a shot, thank you so much!!! (-:

Progress

After playing around with the sounds of the original sample, I found that there are some significant limitations to the sample itself. First of all, it is a really fast, atonal piece which means that it does not give us any harmonic notes. and the fact that it super fast makes it even harder to extract useful notes out of it. I did try to cut some of it and make it the lead voice, but I realised that it is almost impossible. 

I have done quite a lot of tryouts, but there’s also a problem with the sample’s recording quality. The problem is that the sample isn’t recorded by studio microphone which means it is not as easy to manipulate it as I thought. Therefore in my final work, I’ve only got around six tracks from the samples due to its own limitation. 

What I did to the sample is to make it an atmospherical sound on the top as no one will notice its inharmonic nature and its 12/13 time. I extract a useful term out of it which is a sequence made of two semitones. I then transpose it down 3 semitones so that at least some of it is on the key. After that, I copy the track and transpose it down 18 semitones to gain some variety on the same track. Of course I eq both tracks so that only the high-end sound will be heard. To make it the atmospherical sound, I also used the ValhallaSupermassive plugins which will be my presentation topic too. It makes the track from its original position all the way to the back. it suddenly fills the back of the room as I desired.

Another thing that I did was to extract the same bits out of it, cut the last note out, put some delay on it, filter out the lower frequency, added some pitch shifter (-12 semitones) compressed it, and then reverse the phrase, using fade tools to create a transition sound that works with my lofi song. Not that I don’t wanna have made the bass from the sample, it’s because the sample isn’t really recorded well plus it is super fast and there’s no gap in between the notes, therefore the bass of a constant steady and kind of punchy sound is really hard to get from this sample. 

I then made some echoey guitar lead, doubling it, a neo-soul piano harmonic support, a sub bass line, a bass line and a hi-hat to add interest. Since the assignment is mainly about playing around with the sample I’m not gonna extend on those particular parts. But overall I made a quite lofi song where people are able relax and listen to it while driving and studying.
