mardymaid replied to your post: Review: Valerian and the City of a Thousand...
Yes totally & nice reviews. Beautiful visuals, terrible film. I was going reblog gifs last week when I saw it, but I couldn’t summon the enthusiasm to comment properly. It seems a film made to be projected on a wall at some geek chic European gallery party, scenes played on shuffle and preferably dubbed into a language I don’t understand or better still with the lead actors played only by their costumes, which I loved. Might even buy the DVD to pretend I live that life.
Thanks! Yeah the costumes were the stuff of aspiration, and I can put up with a *lot* and still enjoy a trashy movie but I’m very character-focussed, and there was nothing at all to latch onto there :/ I quite like your gallery idea. I’d definitely go there and drink craft German beers and pretend to understand the symbolism of the imagery on the walls :D

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets DVD review
[vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”28611,28610,28609″][vc_column_text]Valerian and the city of a thousand Planets is nothing less than a visual masterpiece based on a French comic around the adventures of agent Valerian in space. This was one of the most highly anticipated movies in 2017 for me after seeing the trailer. If the opening sequence is anything to go by, I can easily say its visual storytelling one of the best I have seen but the film manages to maintain this element to its plot throughout the movie.
In the 28th century, special operatives Valerian and Laureline played by Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne respectively, work together to maintain order throughout the human territories. Under assignment from the minister of defense, the duo embarks on a mission to Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis where diverse species gather to share knowledge and culture. When a dark force threatens the peaceful city, Valerian and Laureline must race against time to identify the menace that also jeopardizes the future of the universe.

The movie captures the same cult greatness as Fifth Element and I hope unlike Fifth Element it continues the franchise with multiple additions to this movie franchise.  It’s a fun space adventure with memorable characters and settings.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]

New On DVD Nov 21/2017
6 titles this week so strap in and enjoy the ride, really don’t know what that means in this instance but go with it.
* The Hitman’s Bodyguard-Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L Jackson, comedy and action what else do you want.
* Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets-Directed by Luc Beeson and starring Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingine.  This didn’t do that well even though critics were falling all over themselves saying how great it was, no stars and it looks strange and the source material is not that well known, there I just told you why it didn’t do that well.
* Churchill-Stars Brian Cox, doesn’t it seem like we’re getting a lot of Churchill movies lately?
* Good Times-Indie drama with Robert Pattinson and Jennifer Jason Leigh, of those two actors I love one and the other one I don’t, I’ll let you figure it out.
* Beach Rats-Drama, coming of age story, very indie.
* Birth Of The Dragon-Kind of a Bio Pic about Bruce Lee, the trailers looked bad and the reviews were the same.

Is “Hitman’s Bodyguard” a hit? “Valerian” out of this world? “Leap!” vault to the top? Popcorn Bag Home Video reviews!
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A violent action comedy, a quirky sci-fi extravaganza and a cartoon about ballet are all new for home streaming and on DVD this week. Don’t spend your time and money before checking in with Shawn and  Russ!
  1) THE HITMAN’S BODYGUARD (R)
Summit Entertainment
  RUSS
Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson give a big boost to “The Hitman’s Bodyguard,” an overlong and violent action comedy. There’s not a moment of credibility in it, but there’s plenty of R-rated mayhem for fans of the genre.
SHAWN Nothing substantial or meaningful happens. And there isn’t anything you haven’t seen before. But Ryan Reynolds and Sam Jackson play well off of one another. Salma Hayek is the wildcard. She isn’t in the movie that often but when she is she’s a firecracker. Believe it or not the movie is too by the numbers. It just isn’t over the top enough which is too bad. Would have loved to see Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson really let loose. That would have been fun.
  RUSS: 3 Popcorn Bags
SHAWN: 3 Popcorn Bags
    2) VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS (PG-13)
EuropaCorp/STX Films
  RUSS
“Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” is a wacky adaptation of a sci-fi comic book series. The plot and dialogue are goofy in the extreme, but the movie’s giddy playfulness and impressive visuals should be enough to please fan boys.
SHAWN
It’s too wacky and way too extreme. It reminded me of the old school Flash Gordon movies, just not as fun.
    RUSS: 3 Popcorn Bags
SHAWN: 2 Popcorn Bags
    3) LEAP! (PG)
The Weinstein Company
  RUSS
In spite of its title, the animated dance movie “Leap!” doesn’t take any chances. Everything about “Leap!” is strictly by the numbers. It’s a colorful but uninspired tale of female empowerment that will appeal only to very undemanding youngsters.
  SHAWN
“Leap” is non-threatening and non-offensive entertainment. It’s basically the stuff bedtime stories are made of. It’s clearly designed for the very young. Artistically it falls well below the mediocre line of acceptability.
  RUSS: 2 Popcorn Bags
SHAWN: 2 Popcorn Bags

Ever since Luc Besson (The Fifth Element) was a ten-year-old boy, he has been fascinated with the French graphic novel Valerian and Laureline and has been trying to make it into a major motion picture for years. He even waived his salary for the film since it was a lifelong passion of his. This year saw the fruit of his labors as Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets made its way into theaters. While it wasn't necessarily the box office blockbuster he was hoping it would be, it was a stylized film that was very distinctly a Luc Besson production. For those who love his work and/or enjoyed the movie, they can own it on 4K Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD and digital download on November 14, 2017.
Major Valerian (Dane DeHaan; The Amazing Spider-Man 2) is on a mission in space with his partner Sergeant Laureline (Cara Delevingne; Suicide Squad) and their latest adventure is to recover a piece of stolen property, which takes them to "the market". Of course, they retrieve the converter and bring it to the Commander (Clive Owens; The Bourne Identity) but they quickly discover there are darker forces at work. When a mysterious group shows up and abducts the Commander, Valerian and Laureline must follow to retrieve him and stop the group.
However, there are also a few other issues at play here…1) Valerian and Laureline have feelings for each other and the Major is always trying to win Laureline over, 2) the Commander isn't so innocent and the mysterious group isn't so evil and 3) Valerian had a strange dream that isn't really much of a dream. In his dream, the "Pearl", a civilization of peaceful alien creatures, are crying out to him for help. It turns out they are not a dream but the Commander's nightmare who he is trying to destroy.
Besson has a unique way of telling science fiction stories and Valerian follows that same mold. With an artistic flair, he graphically paints a picture and blurs the lines between perception and reality. Like with Leon: The Professional, he infuses his stories with emotion that engages the viewer even more than the action. He is a true master storyteller and his films are generally worthy of analysis and reflection.
This cast rises to the occasion and DeHaan and Delevingne have an easiness about them that makes their relationship believable. DeHaan doesn't look like your typical leading man hero and when you close your eyes one would swear they were listening to Keanu Reeves speaking – his tone and inflection are that similar. Delevingne always seems to be solid in her roles and this one is no different. The supporting cast, including Owens, Rihanna (Bates Motel), Herbie Hancock (‘Round Midnight) and Ethan Hawke (Training Day), frame the two leads nicely. A cameo from Rutger Hauer (Blade Runner) is short but effective.
The 2160p high definition video is exceptional and the colors really pop off the screen. The contrasting hues are generally vibrant and powerful and help to set the scene beautifully. Besson's films have so much detail and this one is no exception. The quality enhances these minute bits and pieces and is something to be admired. The Dolby Atmos audio packs a punch that is full-bodied and robust. The laser blasters are nicely done and the overall sound is terrific. The eclectic soundtrack offers some older material but the songs sound sharp without any artifacting to speak of. The 4K Blu-ray has a few extras including citizens of Imagination: Creating the Universe of Valerian, To Alpha and Beyond: Production and Stunts, Denizens of the Galaxy: Humans and Aliens, The Final Element: Visual Effects, and Wrap Up.
The movie is lackluster at times and definitely too long but it has a certain feel to it the will appeal to some viewers. I must admit that I didn't hate it as much as I thought I would based on the feedback I had heard when it was released in theaters. For true Besson fans, this is a must own movie.

Latest story from https://movietvtechgeeks.com/annabelle-creation-tops-box-office-holding-dunkirk-number-spot/
'Annabelle: Creation' tops box office holding 'Dunkirk' at number spot
"Annabelle: Creation" continues a winning streak in the low-budget "Conjuring" horror franchise for Warner Bros. The third film nearly matched "Annabelle" with reviews that should keep it going for a few more weeks. Halloween will easily see DVD/Blu-ray rentals pop it back up again. The "Conjuring" spinoff "Annabelle: Creation" scared up an estimated $35 million in North American theaters over the weekend, making it easily the top film and giving the lagging August box office a shot in the arm. The opening came close to matching the film's predecessor, "Annabelle," which opened with $37.1 million in October 2014. Warner Bros. could celebrate not only the month's biggest debut but also having the week's top two films. Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk" followed in second with $11.4 million in its fourth weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday. Even amid an especially weak August, the well-reviewed horror sequel and modestly budgeted "Annabelle: Creation" found eager audiences. "That we were able to do $35 million in what is a very sluggish marketplace was very impressive," said Jeffrey Goldstein, Warner Bros.' distribution chief. "We all know that moviegoing begets moviegoing and right now it's a dip in the content overall." The film, the third to spiral out of 2013's "The Conjuring," cost only about $15 million to make. More sequels and spinoffs are being developed in what has become for Warner Bros. a steadily profitable horror franchise bent on old-school frights. The "Annabelle" offshoot centers on a possessed doll. Last week's top film, the poorly received Stephen King adaptation "The Dark Tower," slid dramatically. The Sony Pictures release, starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey, toppled nearly 60 percent on its second weekend with an estimated $7.9 million. The week's other new entry, the Open Road animated release "Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature," edged just above "The Dark Tower" with $8.9 million. That was well below the 2014 debut of the original, "The Nut Job," which opened with $19.4 million. But the solid returns for "Annabelle: Creation" did little to counter the box-office slide. The box office was down 31.6 percent from the same weekend last year, when "Suicide Squad" was No. 1 despite brutal reviews and Seth Rogen's "Sausage Party" opened. The summer altogether is down 12.4 percent from last year, according to comScore. "This is a great weekend to be a really scary doll and Warner Bros., but for everyone else, it's just plain scary," said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for comScore. "It proves the horror genre is alive and well." Some of July's bright spots, however, have continued into August. The summer's top comedy, "Girls Trip," will soon surpass $100 million domestically. The movie, starring Jada Pinkett Smith and Queen Latifah, took in $6.5 million in its fourth week to bring its cumulative total to $97.2 million. It may end up doubling the gross of its closest summer comedy competition: the starrier and pricey "Baywatch" ($58.1 million in its entire run). In limited release, the A24 crime thriller "Good Time," starring Robert Pattinson, debuted with a robust $34,000 per-screen average on four screens. That was bettered, though, by the $47,000 screen-average of Neon's "Ingrid Goes West," with Aubrey Plaza, on three screens. Both films expand in coming weeks. Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters according to comScore. Where available, the latest international numbers also are included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.
"Annabelle: Creation," $35 million ($35 million international).
"Dunkirk," $11.4 million ($14.5 million international).
"Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature," $8.9 million.
"The Dark Tower," $7.9 million ($7.9 million international).
"The Emoji Movie," $6.6 million ($14.1 million international).
"Girls Trip," $6.5 million ($1.4 million international).
"Spider-Man: Homecoming," $6.1 million ($12.4 million international).
"Kidnap," $5.2 million.
"Glass Castle," $4.9 million.
"Atomic Blonde," $4.6 million ($5.2 million international).
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at international theaters (excluding the U.S. and Canada), according to comScore
"Wolf Warrior 2," $83.6 million.
"Annabelle Creation," $35 million.
"Guilty of Mind," $23.6 million.
"The Adventures," $22.3 million.
"War for the Planet of the Apes," $17.1 million.
"A Taxi Driver," $15.3 million.
"Despicable Me 3," $15 million.
"Dunkirk," $14.5 million.

Movie News 07/23/17
Hello Everyone, and welcome back to your Movie News Email.
Each week we count down the top 5 box office hits of the weekend, and bring you the news that we have learned from the past week.
This week we find out if "Spider-Man: Homecoming" was able to recapture the top spot (as I predicted that it would.  Man, I hope I'm right.  I hate being wr......), we have some more news from D23, and we have some news coming out of San Diego Comic Con.  All this coming at you this week.  Enjoy.
First off, we sadly have to add an "In Memorium" segment to this week's edition.
John Heard, the man known mostly for his role as the father in the "Home Alone" movies has passed away at the age of 71.  John's other main role was that of a corrupt detective in "The Sopranos".
John was found dead at a California hotel where he was staying while recovering from a recent back surgery.  No cause of death has been reported at this time.
Rest Well, John.
OK, to the box office.  We had 3 new movies hit the theatres this week, and, surprisingly, all three hit the top 5.  Well, that knocks one of my predictions out.   Let's see who took the number one spot.
We start at number 5, and the first of our debut films.  I expected this one to hit the top 5, but I wasn't sure where it would land as I said this has the potential to be a new cult classic.
"Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets took in just over 17 million dollars to take the first spot of our list.  A little disappointing for the film, but it really wasn't promoted as much as I thought it should have been.
One of our members was going to see the film.  Hopefully we will get a review for next week's edition.
Taking the number 4 position is last week's number one movie.  "War For the Planet of the Apes" pulling in 20.4 million dollars, could not hold the top spot. (As predicted)
At number 3 we have "Spider-Man: Homecoming". (Damn, I was wr...-Not right.) Spidey took in another 22.1 million dollars to bring it's domestic gross over 251 million.  It will still be interesting to see what happens to it over the next couple of weeks.
At number 2, is the second of our debut films, and another not right prediction on my part.  I thought this film would not hit the top 5, but Queen Latifah's "Girl Trip" pulled in an impressive 30.3 million dollars and very handily snagged the number two position.  (Oh well, can't pick them all.  Congrats to the cast and crew)
And our new number one movie is one that I hoped would make the top 5, but am also a little surprised to see it hit number one, but I am glad it did.
The WWII historical drama from Christopher Nolan, "Dunkirk" easily took the number one position with 50.5 million dollars.
This one, I want to see.  I may not get a chance until it comes out on DVD, but it is one I will see.
If anyone has seen this one, or any of the other new releases, please let me know.  I would love to hear what you thought of it.
So that's what happened this past weekend.  What's coming out next week?
Well, we have two movies opening in major markets next weekend.  And to be honest, I have no clue what they are going to do.  I suspect both will debut in the top 5, but I am not sure where they are going to land.
First up is the animated movie based on those little pictures we all (Or most of us) use in our texting.  "The Emoji Movie" stars the voices of Patrick Stewart, James Corden, Jennifer Coolidge, and Jake T. Austin.
The second of our new movies is "Atomic Blonde" and stars Charlize Theron and James McAvoy and is being touted as the first female James Bond.
I have seen trailers for both movies and I have to be honest.  Neither one excites me to go and pay $10.00 to see them, let alone $17.50 to see them in an IMAX theatre.
But if anyone gets to one of these and likes them, let me know.  I have been wr.... Not right a lot this week.  What's another couple times.
So let's get to the news, and we have quite a bit to cover.  So let's not waste any time.
Here is what we have heard so far coming out of SDCC.
FX's "Legion" creator, Noah Hawley confirmed that he is developing a movie for Fox centered around the Fantastic Four's number one villain, Doctor Doom.  The movie will not have the Fantastic Four in it, however.
Marvel's "Ant Man and the Wasp" added a new name to the project.  Janet Van Dyne, wife of Michael Douglas' Hank Pym, will be played by none other than Michelle Pfeiffer.
DC now as the next movie slated after "Aquaman", and it is "Shazam".  David F Sandberg will direct. It was expected that either "The Flash" or the Joss Whedon "Batgirl" would be the next up, but since they are still in early development, it was decided that "Shazam" be next.  Shooting is expected to start in 2018 for a 2019 release.
DC has also revealed it's lineup of movies as well.  No dates attached to them yet, but here is what they said is up and coming. It starts with Justice League, Aquaman, then Shazam.  After that it's "Suicide Squad 2", "The Batman", "Justice League Dark", "Batgirl", Green Lantern Corps", "The Flash: Flashpoint", and finally "Wonder Woman 2".  No word on "Gotham City Sirens", nor "Nightwing", but don't give up on them.  They're coming
Hot off the heels of "Shazam", we have a couple of release dates from DC now.  They are:
Feb 14 2020
June 5 2020
Now we don't know which movies are going to take those two spots, but more than likely it will be "Suicide Squad 2" and "The Batman"
And who is going to play "The Batman"?  Well, Ben Affleck answered that question at SDCC.  He is.  Period.  That pretty much puts those rumors to rest.
In a Facebook post, Todd McFarlane is writing and directing a new verson of "Spawn".  McFarlane created the character as his flagship title for the "Image" comic book company which he started. In the 1990's, McFarlane became the biggest name in comics art and storytelling with his work on Marvel's "Amazing Spider-Man, and the spinoff series "Spider-Man".
The Russo Brothers have announced that production has wrapped on the "Avengers: Infinity War".  The movie now moves into post production where voice overs, special effects, music, and editing takes over and cleans up the movie.
Well, this next bit of news isn't movie related, but it is Star Wars related and it is just too cool not to talk about.
Now we all know that Disney is creating a Star Wars land as part of the parks in both Florida and California.  Well, at D23 they named it.  "Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge".  This will be a totally immersive experience.  When you enter the land, you are entering into the world of Star Wars.  You will first meet the rebels in a forested area, then as you enter the city, you will interact with the First Order, as well as bounty Hunters.  While in the park, what you decide has consequences.  One area you get to pilot a ship similar to the Millennium Falcon.  If you don't fly it well, the boss will not be happy, and when you go into one of the cantinas, you may find you have a bounty on you for damaging the ship.
And the hotel resort that resides in the park will be completely Star Wars related.  All employees will be in character 100% of the time.  You check in, possibly get a costume, and interact with the role playing characters working there.
It is set up to be in the style of being on a spaceship, so when you get to your room, you do not look out over the park, you have a screen that shows you being in space.  And from what I understand, you get to see yourself lifting off from the docking bay and going into space.
It's a two night stay, and a price tag of $1000.00 per person.  (I take donations, by the way).
"Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge" will span over 14 acres of land and is targeted for a 2019 opening.  Who's going?
And coming out of SDCC, have we got a toy for you.  Well, maybe not for you, but for the kids.  From Radio Flyer, the makers of the metal red wagon, comes an actual scaled down replica of Luke's landspeeder.  Now this isn't a pedal car, but a motorized vehicle, similar to the Power Wheels. Not available yet, but I am sure it will be before Christmas. (When are they going to build one for adults???)
Whew!!! Enough for you for this week.  Yeah, I think so too.  More and more information is coming out of SDCC, and will continue to do so all week long, and we will bring that news to you as we learn more of it.  But look for more trailers for "Black Panther", "Thor: Ragnarok", "Justice League", "The Inhumans", "Ready Player One", and many more to surface.  I have seen a few of these, and they look fantastic.  It's going to be a lot of fun.
So that's it for this week.  A big thanks to everyone who has given me their thoughts on movies they have seen, or news they have heard.
I hope you had a good time reading this and enjoyed it.
If you would like to receive the Movie News Email outside of the building, just drop me a line at
[email protected], and I will start emailing them to you from there.  If you have any information or reviews, you can also leave them for me there.  It's easier to get to than my regular email.
We are also blogging, at least I think we are.  Not really sure.  But go to Tumblr.com and search for Movie News Email.  Let me know if you find it so I know I am doing it right.
Come back again next weekend for the next edition of your Movie News Email.
  See you then.
So until next time,        “Keep your feet on the ground, and keep reaching for the stars” - Kasey Kasum Rocky

“The Kettering Incident” (2016)
Thriller/Drama
Tumblr media
8 Episodes
Produced by:  Vincent Sheehan and Andrew Walker
Directed by: Rowan Woods and Tony Krawitz
Featuring: Elizabeth Debicki, Matthew Le Nevez, Henry Nixon, Anthony Phelan, Damon Gameau, Damien Garvey, Sacha Horler, Brad Kannegiesser, Sianoa Smit-McPhee
The last few years has seen an upsurge in not only Australian television but also the sheer volume of Australian actors heading to the US and appearing in not only independent movies but blockbusters as well. Enter the 2016 production of the Tasmanian based show “The Kettering Incident” (2016), featuring Elizabeth Debicki, fresh of star turns in a bunch of movies, including “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” (2017), “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” (2015), “Everest” (2015) as well as the upcoming “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” (2017) – Debicki certainly is having a pretty good run. “The Kettering Incident” is a true original show, one that could only take place in Tasmania, an island that is almost isolated, best known for a Yahoo Serious film, David Boon and Ricky Ponting – as well as being the site of one the worst mass shootings in Australia’s history. It’s a wonder it’s taken so long to set a show like this there. The sheer low of the place can have a sense of forboding.
The series (at least this first season) is based around Dr. Anna Macy (Elizabeth Debicki) who left Kettering when she was just fourteen, shortly after her best friend (and half-sister), Gillian Baxter, mysteriously disappeared. The two girls had been cycling through the forbidden forests outside Kettering when they saw strange lights in the sky. Eight hours later, Anna was found alone, terrified and covered in blood.
Fifteen years later, Anna returns to find the town struggling to survive. The forests have been marked for logging and the town is on edge following violent clashes between environmentalists and the local loggers. Anna’s reappearance causes a stir when another girl, Chloe Holloway (Sianoa Smit-McPhee) suddenly disappears, prompting Anna to discover what really happened the night Gillian disappeared, and in doing so, uncovering secrets that threaten the future of Kettering.
One of the main characters in this miniseries is the landscape of Tasmania itself, I lead with that because after just a few episodes of the craggy coastlines, the cold deep blue water, the sometimes inhospitable looking living conditions, a forest that seems to hide a deeper mystery as well as wildlife that seems to come from another world. It was a stroke of genius to locate the plot of this slow burning show on an isolated as well as isolating piece of Australia. There may have been some inspiration from reality for the plot, but it is still an inspired choice of the production to actually film on location with all the pitfalls this can incur – this is not a forgiving environment.
The atmosphere that has been generated by both director and cinematographer gives a true sense of dread throughout the eight episodes, not only with the general outlook of the show but also the difference in the London locations moving through to the Tasmanian area. Within Tasmania we have several locations that are all very different, the forest area, the suburban sprawl that has taken root, the ocean with all that encompasses as well the interesting outlooks from the roads that the characters travel.
The characters are all very interesting as well as being extremely complex, with the cast being led by Elizabeth Debicki as Anna Macy, a struggling drug addicted medical professional who has been running her entire life. She has blackouts, which is not a spoiler as it is literally in the first few scenes. The device is incredible and reminded me of David Flincher’s “Fight Club” (1999) which had a similar device but it is more jarringly used here. The rest of the cast is made up of Australian characters actors that have been seen on countless dramas, some have even made the shift to the US for more lucrative offers, however they all make their mark here in what is a quintessential thriller with surprises and revelations in every excellent episode.
This is a thriller with a very slow burning plot that delivers revelations as well as plot points each episode as you would expect from the post modern thrillers that have become the norm, as the effect of the Scandi-noirs as well as English dramas have dictaatted to modern story-telling. This is a refreshing take with conspiracy around every corner.
This miniseries comes alive at home so a purchase on DVD or Blu-ray would be a good choice as well as a welcome addition to any home library.
“The Kettering Incident” is out now on DVD and Blu-ray.
