Thinking about Mourn Watch Rook choosing to join Varric, of all things they could possibly do after getting kicked out of the Necropolis.

Because Varric's enemy is also his friend. The Inquisitor loves Solas, Varric wants to talk him down, they need to save the world from Solas but they don't want to give up Solas in the process, this is the situation Rook is choosing to get involved in.

And Rook falls in love with Lucanis, and Lucanis's enemy is also his family, like a brother to him, he needs to stop Illario but he doesn't want to lose him in the process - it's not even about whether Illario can be redeemed, Illario is just his, all he has left, and he's not willing to give that up.

Thinking about Mourn Watch Rook getting involved in all this after the reason they got kicked out of the Necropolis. The leaders of the rebellion you need to stop are also the cherished ancestors. You kill them anyway. It costs you everything.

Both because everyone's perception of time is different (and gets weird when you add grief to the mix) and because it means we can headcanon how long it took each specific Rook to get out of there based on how well we think they'd have managed their regrets

The World: What does happily-ever-after look like for Rook? Is it attainable, or just wishful thinking?

• KERROS •

I think Kerros' idea of a happily ever after changes often, very much in keeping with the ebb and flow of his nature. He is a mercurial, ephemeral creature, more in tune with the tides of the world than the foundations of it.

One day he wakes up and thinks he will climb to the lofty quarterdeck where Isabela oversees the Lords, either to give her a run for her money as she loves, or to beg/borrow/steal the show of first mate, because he's had a taste of leadership now and he could take or leave it.

Another day, he considers a rooftop apartment in Treviso with crows and Crows in the rafters. Idly, the thought of Lucanis looms. Is that what he really wants? A life of contracts and careful steps? As a Lord, he lacks the affinity for either. Lucanis doesn't mind, Kerros knows - he says he enjoys the contrast - but he wonders where the give and take will turn into a tug of war between Antiva and Rivain, and when both will dig their heels into the sand all in the name of compromise.

On rarer days, he thinks of the near future. The one where Rion is sick and sicker by the day, where Cullen grows grey with grief and not with contentedness, and where Kerros ultimately feels he will not be able to forgive the world he must continue to live in when the inevitable comes to pass.

Most days, he thinks of no future at all. It is easier. There is less uncertainty. Less grief. Less everything, and less is sometimes more.

• BEREN •

Beren relentlessly seeks out rest for the restless dead, but they give no thought to a restful future for themselves -- something Emmrich might pull them up on, sooner or later.

I think they have an innate discord to them, very much in the way handmade things tend to carry the messy human nature of their origin -- a slipped stitch here, an accidental tangle there, a crossing of threads where perhaps they should have been kept separate. When Beren was remade, their body painstakingly pieced together, their mother made a fundamental mistake: she did not leave room to grow.

Perhaps she thought the growing was done, or a more likely answer is that she wished to keep Beren a certain way forever - however unconsciously, and it bled into her work. Just like a slipped stich. Or a tangle. Maybe a crossing of threads. The trouble with flesh and blood, unfortunately, is that it quite often cannot be undone.

At least, not without some considerable degree of pain, which is something Beren doesn't handle very well.

All this to say: Beren is old, but still has a lot of growing to do, in a form that perhaps doesn't allow it so easily. It will be painful. It will be uncomfortable. But a happy future for them consists of time spent furthering their research, enjoying the world they are twice-blessed to live in, alongside someone who actively chooses to indulge curiosity and not hide from it.

But first, they must find room to rest.

Turn the Sun Down: Name your Rook's favorite time of year and why it is so.

Valo-Asaara:

Valo-Asaara: "Summertime- I love the beach, and sunshine, and summer has more sunshine, and that means more time at the beach.  Also, sun's out guns out." Davrin probably (because he is the tells it like it is but manages to make it sound like a disappointed parent [this is not a criticism. I love Davrin]): "Your guns are always out." Valo- Asaara decides to forget the top to his armor completely: "Well, now they're MORE out."

Valrys: They like winter. They think snow is a lot of fun and really pretty. And this has nothing to do with the way snowflakes clung to Lace's lashes on Isana Nagat. Okay it doesn't have EVERYTHING to do with that.

Camillus: He likes Autumn, but there isn't much of one in Tevinter. Just something about falling leaves feels cozy.

Artist: What talents does your Rook have?

Valo-Asaara: As stated before, he can sing. He can sing very well. Voice of an angel. He has put lots of practice over the years into his voice. Because for as difficult as school and other intellectual pursuits are for him, music has never been that for him. It's come naturally, and he even had lessons as a child. I imagine, had his parents lived , he might have become a professional musician, a bard, or something of that nature.

He can also draw. He's not amazing at it, but he hasn't really put the effort into bettering his skills in drawing the way he has at singing.

Canelo: Making jewelry. Specifically beads. He used to make little paper beads  and bracelets from them with his siblings when he couldn't afford  real presents. The paper beads, if sealed properly would last for at least a little while braided into their hair. Now, he uses metal, and if it is a soft enough metal that he doesn't need a forge to warm, he will etch into it. There are also sea glass beads (he loves trips to Rivain Coast to collect more) that he can sand and shape into pieces. Gift giving is his main love language, but it's all handmade things (except for when he shares one of his music boxes by giving it to a friend).

Boy can dance, but it's not trained. Just lots of practice and enjoys it a lot

Camilllus: Has spectacular penmanship. His calligraphy is to die for, which would make sense if he is making spell scrolls and doing scribe work on the side. But he knits too, as I've written about before. He especially likes to knit Empress Honey Waffles new sweaters.

Luca: Harpsichord. Hours and hours of lessons as a kid, even taking electives for it while studying at the Carastes Circle. He also does tumbling/gymnastics (Insomuch as Thedas HAS gymnastics). It serves him well in battle. I like to imagine one day the lighthouse just manifests a set of parallel bars and some still rings.

Valrys: Makeup is their big one. They do all kinds of cool looks on their eyes (and on any member of the Veilguard that asks. The day Davrin said ok was the day the whole team died from too much pretty brown eyes made prettier).

And they taught themself how to sew, because they could never find dresses that were a)meant for Dwarves or b)meant for AMAB dwarf bodies that didn't look like a potato sack. But they will also offer to do minor tailoring on Veilguard members' outfits. So far, only Neve, Emmrich, and Lucanis have taken them up on the offer. Lucanis brings them a LOT of things to tailor.

Esha holds up the half finished dangling earrings to @ingllvar , judging if they would be too much or not. Jewel green carpaces glint in the sparse illumination of the room, and Esha decides they need a few glass beads for movement, then she'll be done with them.

"Did you see anyone exciting today, at least?" Only a small portion of her requested goods had been obtainable from the market, thr tradeway still taking its time due to well... allegedly, there was a giant hole in the sky.

Esha has not found the courage to surface from the Necropolis to see it for herself yet, so she's been reading about it or listening to gossip as she's able.

The dead still needed them while the world fell apart.

ARE THEY

A cuddler: Very much so. Likes touch and to be touched. Hugs and snuggles are their love language much more than anything else.

Scared easily: Nothing scares them. They are 5'0" and are so used to "punching up" that they don't scare easily at all. // With exception to Claustrophobia and Thalassophobia which is exclusive to Rook.

Jealous easily: Not at all. Not as Da'mithra and not as Rook. Never felt the need to feel jealous, or feel as though she isn't getting enough attention either, so there never is a reason to feel jealous.

Trustworthy: Depends on to whom. Da'mithra is eternally trustworthy to Elgar'nan and would drop anyone and everything at his command. // Rook, however, is less inclined to blindly follow the word or desires of Elgar'nan. Her end goal remains the same no matter what; stopping the sixth blight and preventing the apocalypse.

FAMILY

Sibling(s): not technically, though it depends. The Evanuris acted like siblings and a dedicated family structure in front of the public, but in actuality none of them are related // Rook doesn't know if they have any siblings as they do not know who their blood parents are. The closest she has is Bellara and Harding who both treat Rook as their little sister.

Parents: None, unless you count whatever created the Primordial Spirits to start with // Unknown Tevinter slaves. Later adopted by a Lich Lord named Victor Ingellvar who died under mysterious circumstances and then she was raised by Vorgoth and Myrna until she was of age and a full Mourn watcher.

Children: None - Can't have any // Can have kids as Rook but her partner can't

01- Does your Rook fall for their partner at first sight? If not, what moment made your Rook realize they're in love with them?

Because of Orlais, the first thing Tara noticed about Emmrich was his mustache, an incredibly understated, refined thing as opposed to the great big waxed eccentric designs of the rich bourgeoisie and Thom’s. It immediately made her think of kissing those lips and she still does. She can’t say it was love at first sight, but she definitely did not hesitate to check out his ass one day on the Rivaini coastline, and enjoy every minute of it before she risked getting caught.

05- Do they have different cultural backgrounds (e.g. a Rook who was raised in Antiva with Harding who was raised in Ferelden)? If so, do they ever share parts of their culture with each other? If they're similar, how do they celebrate their culture together?

Tara was born Orlesian, but not to the best of circumstances. An invocation of the Rite of Conscription is what saved her life the second time and the Grey Wardens is really what shapes her the most. The closest thing she had to home is a few pockets of Val Royeaux’s poorer sections and Weisshaupt and, well. You know.

The ability to speak and read Orlesian and their unfortunate shared background of being orphans give her some common ground with Emmrich. Before him she knows nothing of Nevarra, other than the lack of Warden presence. There’s some comfort when she’s there with him, knowing that there’s less chance of darkspawn given that most of the Necropolis is dead. It’s like she can take a break.

When they get married, though, it’s a Whole Ass Deal and she’s baffled by the amount of ceremonies and rites (which are pretty much completely my fiction from an amalgamation of traditions and ideas and should not be compared to canon because it’s fucking ao3).

Rook & Companion Asks

1. What type of plant would Harding gift your Rook?

I did this for Cassia and Asha here, so I'll do this one for Lyric de Riva!

Lyric has never had any interest in plants. You either have to garden, which is just manual labour no one is paying her for, or you get cut flowers in a vase that you get to watch slowly wither away. Neither option appeals to her.

One day she makes a comment to Harding about how her room is the only one that isn't getting magically redecorated over time. (Which is totally fine, it's absolutely fine that the realm of magic has decided she's basically a non-entity, she's totally and completely fine about the fact that the Fade can't find anything in her worth reflecting, it's fine.) She must've sounded more bitter about it than she meant to, because the next time she comes back there are vines climbing on the furniture and walls.

When she questions Harding, she assures Lyric that the plants don't need much care on her part; ivy is pretty much unkillable. Lyric plays out her smiles and teases and thanks, and then walks back to her room in a daze and stares at the plants in silence until it's time to leave again.

6. Does your Rook share Neve's love of fried fish?

I hate to repeat myself with Cassia but she would literally chew rocks if it meant she got to hang out with Neve. (She does actually like the fish, though.)

Asha isn't sure if there's something magical in Hal's fish that makes it taste so much better than the stuff they have back in Antiva, or if it's just that seeing Neve smile is brightening all her senses.

Lyric is not a fan of fish. She tries to play it off like she's being generous. Oh, she couldn't possibly let Neve pay for her! She's their leader after all. She'll just eat at the Lighthouse when they get back, don't worry about her, please! (Neve absolutely sees through her.)

Valrun will try anything once. They don't have strong feelings on the fish itself either way, but they're happy Neve is sharing something she likes with them.

14. What kind of tea would Emmrich make for your Rook?

Cassia would get chamomile tea, with a bit of lemon.

Asha would like licorice tea, the kind that has a nice natural sweetness, and doesn't have the bitterness she usually dislikes in tea.

Lyric would like anything bright and fruity.

Valrun will just have a cup of whatever Emmrich is drinking at the time. But if it's their choice, they prefer something with simple flavours, ideally something bitter and full of caffeine.

Valrys: Did you see that? The amazing shot? That's my girlfriend. Isn't she great? Random Merchant: "All I asked was if I could get you anything else?"

Valrys: "You're a marvel, Lace Harding. A terrifying marvel, and you're great!" Lace: "Focus on the fight, you boob!" Valrys (blissful sigh as they are smashing some Venatori's head in): "I'm so gonna marry that woman."

Lace on the other hand: "Grab you coin purse. We're getting our hair done!" Meanwhile, Valrys is halfway out the door before she can even finish the sentence: "Don't have to tell me twice. We're gonna look so hot!"

Or the less enthusiastic

Lace: "Come on, Val, we're going camping." Valrys (pretending to be excited but they hate camping. They do, however, love that Lace loves camping): "Can't wait!"

Dragon Age Veilguard liveblogging -

FADE TRIP WITH SPITE! We live in the Fade and we've gone through so many of Solas's memories, I wasn't expecting to get a dedicated Fade mission on top of that, and yet here we are complete with jokes about turning into a mouse or fighting oversized spiders, awww, thank you Spite!

And there's something really striking about these rays with their bright electric blue glow here in Lucanis's mental prison where all the colors are usually muted, that Lucanis's mind included them.

Spite at the first lock, when Rook's surprised there's no one waiting there to confront them: "Of course not. Rook can't be here. You open doors. You don't close them." i'm fine this is fine give me a minute

Zara's disembodied voice: "Envy is the rarest of all demons. And the most challenging to cultivate. The conditions must be perfect." ...Envy? Was she aiming for Envy when she got Spite? There is a very obvious Dellamorte candidate for Envy and it's not the one she locked up.

Lucanis may see Rook as the one who opens his prison door, but he's casting the other companions as guards keeping their eyes on the prisoner, and he's given us these reasonable justifications about why he prefers to sleep in the tiny windowless extremely-prison-cell-like pantry really, and this whole time he has been mentally carrying his prison with him, can we please get this man a window now. A mattress maybe. ...I was about to suggest he move in with Rook like a DA2 romance but actually I'm not sure an underwater view would be much of an improvement here.

It took seventy-three hours of playing for Rook to start this romance and then only three hours to commit to it, what is this pacing.

Lucanis makes tarta de limon to pair with Rook's favorite tea, and this unlocks a codex entry recipe for... a Nevarran hazelnut torte? Which sounds pretty good actually, with the apricot. Is that what he would have made in this scene if Rook liked coffee instead of tea? But I kind of love that Lucanis is getting Nevarran recipes from Emmrich now - and I'm assuming this codex entry is the same no matter which faction your Rook is from and it's just a coincidence that Rook happens to be Nevarran, but it's a nice coincidence. Also the banter where Lucanis agrees to try a wine Emmrich recommended "just to see what the Watchers keep in their cellars." Things that were not actually intended to be romance lines for Mourn Watch Rook specifically, but they work out nice that way - Lucanis hates the necropolis Rook grew up in so very, very much, but he wants to learn the tastes Rook grew up with.

EMMRICH'S GOING TO BECOME A LICH? IS IT TOO LATE TO RETHINK ROOK'S LOVE INTEREST i'm joking, i'm mostly joking, I am very happy with Rook/Lucanis and also with the nice relaxing friendship between two necromancers venturing outside their necropolis. Romanceable lich though.

It is very funny how clearly you can hear the difference in tone between the specifically Mourn Watch Rook lines which are just sincerely, wholeheartedly happy for Emmrich and his future lichdom, good job getting tenure congrats, and then it gets to a line recorded for Rooks in general and suddenly he has concerns.

Oh, man, Harding confronting the Titans' anger. When Harding says You took everything from us, and you thought you won, and she's looking directly at an elven Rook. We will thrive in spite of you, and the embodiment of Spite is right there beside her, and just moments earlier had been assuring her he won't tell anyone about how afraid she is.

I was surprised earlier that our spirit companion for this game was Spite and not Regret, since regret seemed like the big theme of the game, but I can see it now.

"Why would you want to outlast everything you love?" Lucanis asks, talking about Emmrich's lichdom, but while standing directly in front of Solas and Mythal. "It sounds like a terrible fate."
