Falles de Saúnc, 2022
from suenanfuerte on instagram
These summer falles are typical in many places of the Pyrenees, including Catalonia and Andorra. They take place on the night of the 23rd to 24th of June, for the night of Saint John the Baptist. In the Aragonese Pyrenees, they are known as the falles de Sant Chuan.
In Saúnc the young people of the village carry hazelnut wood sticks, wrapped on one end with birch wood, which will be lit up, and they run through the town carrying the sticks, until they reach the town square. There, they gather and expertly swing the sticks, making the figures seen above.
After the fire has gone out, the sticks are then used to protect the gardens against polegón (a type of plant pest) by sticking them on the ground nearby.
Other towns nearby such as Sant Chuan de Plan and Chistau in the Chistén valley also celebrate these falles.
