Last night we didn't do anything really special for our anniversary. Instead we went with comfortable.
First we picked up a pizza of the month from a nearby restaurant. It had cashew curry sauce, roasted red peppers, house cheese blend, mango, spicy peanut sauce slaw, and cry baby aioli. The slaw and aioli came in separate containers. They were wonderfully spicy, so it was nice to spoon on only as much as you wanted. I loved the pizza. We both agreed it would be worth getting again this month.
We took the pizza with us to the brewery. We also brought our new Crorkinole game. The dogs stayed home.
A few weeks ago the brewery held a Crorkinole tournament. I'd never heard of the game. Sheila was really intrigued by it and ordered a set. On Etsy she found someone in Minnesota who custom makes the game boards and playing pieces.
We've brought the game with us to the brewery several times. One recent night when Sheila worked late I was home practicing. So I did really well last night. Should have played for money. Several people stopped by our table to inquire about the game.
Playing the game is fun, but I love just looking at this board. The person who made it did beautiful work. It folds in half and has compartments for the playing pieces. The hinges and a latch are excellent quality. Sheila also ordered a nylon carrying case for it, but that hasn't arrived yet.
The top right picture shows the playing side. The shots below are the backside/inside of the folding board and one of the hinges.
Recently Sheila bought a laminating machine to use for some notes and forms she will be using when she starts paramedic school in May. She laminated Crorkinole rules to keep with the board.
Laminating papers is more the sort of thing I would do. I love using my vacuum sealer and my label maker. We once agreed that I could label all the switches in the garage if I didn't make the inside of our home look like an AirBnB rental by labeling all the interior light switches.
It cracks me up that Sheila likes laminating things. I think I'm going to have to agree to let her use my label maker, so I can start playing with that laminator.

🦆Sous Vide Duck Breast 🦆
Ingredients:
- 2 duck breasts
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 2-3 sprigs of fresh thyme (optional)
- 2 cloves garlic, crushed (optional)
- 1 tbsp olive oil (for searing)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the duck breast:
- Pat the duck breasts dry with a paper towel.
- Score the skin in a crisscross pattern, being careful not to cut into the meat.
- Season both sides generously with salt and pepper. You can also add the thyme and garlic for extra flavor.
2. Vacuum seal:
- Place the seasoned duck breasts in a vacuum-seal bag. If you’re using thyme and garlic, place them in the bag as well.
- Seal the bag using a vacuum sealer, ensuring it’s airtight. If you don’t have a vacuum sealer, you can use the water displacement method with a zip-top bag.
3. Sous vide cooking:
- Preheat your sous vide machine to 135°F (57°C)for a medium-rare result. You can adjust to 130°F (54°C) for rare or 140°F (60°C) for medium.
- Place the sealed duck breasts in the water bath and cook for 2 hours.
4. Sear the duck:
- Once the sous vide cooking is done, remove the duck breasts from the bag and pat them dry again.
- Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add a small amount of olive oil.
- Place the duck breasts skin-side down in the skillet and sear for about 2-3 minutes until the skin is crispy and golden brown.
- Flip the breasts and quickly sear the meat side for about 30 seconds.
5. Rest and serve:
- Remove the duck from the skillet and let it rest for 5 minutes before slicing.
- Slice the duck breast thinly and serve with your favorite sides, like roasted vegetables or a fruit-based sauce.

I first saw the Instant Pot at a friend's house. She had made sweet potatoes with it, and said that it took hardly any time at all.
That wasn't enough for me, of course, but it was enough that I started to do research, and looked at the different sizes and their features, and started imagining what my life would be like if I had an Instant Pot. I had been living the slow cooker life, and the problem with a slow cooker is that you have to plan meals well ahead of time and start them in the morning.
The more I read, the more enamored I grew, and eventually I brought an Instant Pot home. In those early, heady days, I used it for everything. I made pulled pork and shredded chicken, I made batches of hard-boiled eggs for pickling, I tore through recipes for curry and chili and all kinds of things.
And eventually I grew tired of it. It lost its luster. I found cleaning it annoying, and started to question whether it was actually sacrificing some flavor for time.
I tried to spice things up. I made pancakes in the Instant Pot. I made yogurt. For just a moment it felt new and novel, but that was how I knew that the Instant Pot was going to be spending more time on the shelf. It still comes out sometime, but not often, and when it does, I see all its faults.
The sous vide machine was next. I had seen it in a cooking video and thought that it looked like something out of science fiction, cooking food in bags that sat in water, regulating temperatures to within a tenth of a degree.
I cooked steak with it, and it was the perfect medium rare, with the outside seared using a blowtorch. It was the best steak I had ever had, until the next time I made steak with the sous vide machine, which went even better. I did sous vide chicken, locking in the flavor with the vacuum sealer. I made chashu pork, which was melt-in-your-mouth tender. I made slow-poached eggs, which can be cracked right into a bowl of ramen since they've cooked to the perfect doneness right inside the shell.
And after having a lot of perfect steaks, I started to get tired of it. Everything comes out of the sous vide process looking watery and gray, and needs to be patted down, then seared with a broil function of the oven or better, a blowtorch if you want it to look nice and have a crispy crust. It required planning ahead, and having a big pot of water sitting around, and needs the vacuum sealer, and is overall a hassle when compared to just placing things into a pan. Some things come out weird even if you sear them. I made sous vide salmon and it was unpleasantly tender.
I would still use it from time to time, but it wasn't the same. I didn't yearn for the next thing to try with sous vide. Most of the time we don't eat all that much steak.
And now I can feel myself getting those familiar butterflies for an air fryer. I see them stacked up when I go visit Costco, and I think about where it would sit in the kitchen, and all the things that I would do with it. I look at the price and try to justify it by calculating amortized expense over its whole lifetime.
And I'm sure there are interesting things to do with an air fryer, and I'm sure that it would make the food taste better, just as I'm sure that it would start to annoy me in various ways, and that over time, I would come to regard it in the same cold utilitarian way I regard the other appliances.
That slow, painful realization that you've fallen out of love with a kitchen appliance.

Birmingham Expert Details the Restoration of Neglected Quarry Tiled Floors in Bournville
A customer had recently moved into a property in Bournville and discovered an original Quarry tiled floor in the living room, hallway and a couple of quirky tiled areas upstairs. After searching on the internet for some inspiration, they came across my previous work and got in touch. Period floors like these are very popular and so they were keen to have the Quarry tiles restored.
I went over the property to survey the floor and made notes of all the floors and problems including the removal of self-levelling screed in the living room. This is often used to level tiled floors prior to the installation of another covering such as Vinyl or Carpet. It can be difficult to remove but it can be done. Another issue that would need to be dealt with was carpet glue and paint stains which I found in the hallway.
I worked out a detailed plan for the restoration work and was able to use this to create a quote for the work. Keen to have the floors restored my quote was accepted and a date set for the work to start.
Cleaning a Quarry Tiled Living Room Floor
The first day was spent removing an area of levelling screed from the living room along with a couple of repairs to the tiles. This literally has to be scrapped off the tiles by hand to remove the bulk of the screed. The whole floor was then cleaned with a strong dilution of Tile Doctor Remove & Go scrubbed in with a 120-grit carbide pad fitted to a weighted buffer machine. The resultant slurry was then extracted with a wet and dry vacuum.
The next step was to give the floor an acid rinse using Tile Doctor Grout Clean-up which is ideal for breaking down cement residues. It was let to soak into the floor for ten minutes before being scrubbed. For this the coarse 120-grit pad was switched for a finer 240-grit carbide pad. The floor was rinsed with water and extracted again to remove the slurry.
After inspecting the floor, I was pleased to see that marks imprinted onto the tiles by the previous floor covering had been removed and the tiles were looking so much cleaner. Happy with my work the tiles were left to dry off overnight with the aid of a couple of air movers.
The next day I tackled the Quarry tiled hallway which was stained with carpet glue. The started with a steamer to loosen up year’s old adhesive and bitumen along with a scraper to remove dried paint. The hallway tiles along with a couple of tiled hearths upstairs were then cleaned using the same process as the living room.
After an hour or so of drying the tiles, I applied a coat of Tile Doctor Stone Oil to all the floors and left them to dry for twenty minutes before towelling off the excess. The tiles were then left to dry off completely overnight. Stone oil is the first step in the sealing process and adds colour, texture, and generally improves the condition of the Quarry tiles after years of neglect.
Sealing a Quarry Tiled Living Room Floor
On the last day I applied a coat of Tile Doctor X-Tra Seal to all the tiles to seal them. This sealer is an impregnator that soaks into the Quarry tile, occupying its pores and thereby preventing dirt from residing there. The tiles were
This sealer will ensure that dirt remains on the surface where is can be easily cleaned away. Another benefit of the sealer is it further improves the colour of the tiles and being fully breathable it will allow moisture still in the floor to rise through and evaporate at the surface.
Once complete all the tiled floors looked so much cleaner and colourful, additionally the new sealer gave all the Quarry tiles a consistent appearance throughout the property.
My customer was very happy with the results and before leaving I took time to discuss aftercare cleaning and left them with a complimentary bottle of Tile Doctor pH neutral Tile Cleaner. This is a mild but effective tile cleaning product that won’t impact the sealer which can be the issue with the stronger products you find in supermarkets.
