hiya stell! i hear you take care of parhelic anima, with repairs and defence as it travels through the cosmos!
i was wondering if you ever have to attend to maintenance on the outside of your comet, and if so if there are any protocols for those sort of repairs! are there codes of conduct to maintain your own safety while doing it, or to ensure bits-and-bobs aren't lost in space; or are those simply not issues for you?

I think it would be cool to recognize that "patriarchy" doesn't refer to the idea that men generally oppress and hold power over women. I think it would be cool to recognize that "patriarchy" is one of several inter-connected means of consolidation of power, and it works by controlling the conditions of what traits of masculinity are good and acceptable, as a means of power over people in society at large, regardless of sex, gender, etc.
That is how come the same trait welcomed as positive in one person of some particular sex/gender/etc is often interpreted as negative in a person of the same sex/etc. Obvious example, too general but simplified for ease of understanding; assertive behavior in a white person is rewarded in the USA in part as a positive masculine trait, while assertive behavior in a black person is punished and treated as a negative racialized trait.
Nothing in a social hegemony exists in a vacuum. In the USA, continuing the example, patriarchy is one of many ways the social structure is reinforced in the population overall. It offers illusory rewards to anyone who is willing to buy into the concept of distinct social stratification and real boundaries between social groups. The ultimate purpose of hegemony in places like the USA and UK, and others with similar systemic oppression is to maintain the system of power consolidated in the hands of a few. It's definitions are arbitrary and derived from any current social trends sufficient to convince the population that they can benefit by excluding the "wrong people" or by keeping an isolated group of "right people."
I think most of us in one form of disenfranchised group or another only get anywhere if we don't treat our groups as isolated and we let our experiences and goals grow together. I don't think stratification is completely avoidable in large social groups, but it's supposed to be a means to an end, not an end in and of itself. I don't know this stuff very well though.

Boogeyman
Imagine being kidnapped by Yandere John Wick.
Inspired by THIS post by @gea-chan96
Masterlist
Yandere John Wick x Reader Drabble
Part II
Warning: Kidnapping, restraints,
Tumblr media
The Boogeyman.
That's what the man had uttered to you before he fled. Well, tried to flee. He was shot in the head, right in front of you. You would not have felt bad for him, otherwise---he was simply doing what he was told to. Delivering those 'gifts' at your doorstep. But one night you caught him, because the police could not, would not.
You have been pissed at the system, the police did nothing to help. But maybe now you understand why. But it is too late. Looking at your bound feet while your wrists rub against the ropes in your futile attempt to free them, you know you are fucked. The ropes do not dig into your skin, there is a smoothness to them, surprisingly. Despite so much struggle, there is only redness, irritated skin, and no sharp stings.
All you remember was the man being shot at from the side, while you stood frozen before he finally appeared in front of you. The Boogeyman, you assume. You wish you had run faster, you wish you were not frozen, but you were petrified, and he was quick.
The bed feels soft, but that does not stop you from shaking like a leaf, terrified as you hear the distinct muffled footsteps approaching towards the room. You whimper but nothing escapes through the tape.
So that is how the victims in those horror movies felt? Frozen, petrified, heart in mouth, barely breathing?
You wait with bated breath---each moment feels like closer to an impending doom, and finally, the door knob twists.
You notice his eyes first--nothing striking on the surface but his eyes have a vacuum that pulls you, there is no cruelty that you have been anticipating, neither mirth nor anger. You are simply staring at a pair of soulful brown eyes with so much depth you think you would have staggered on your feet if you were standing.
You let out a quivering breath through the tape and try to blink your tears away. Your wrists twist against the ropes with a new-found vigour but nothing happens, they remain firm, it is only your heartbeat that spikes, now thundering until you hear it drum against your ears.
So this is how you die? Does he have a gun? Or a butcher knife?
With each step he takes, you drag yourself further away, despite knowing well that you can go nowhere.
"It's okay, it's okay, I'm not going to hurt you, see?"
As if reading your mind, he raises his hands. They are big, you notice. So he is going to strangle you instead. The thought makes the tears finally escape your eyes. You try to regulate your breath, and you really do, but it is getting worse.
"It's okay. Breathe, slow down, breathe in, breathe out." His voice nears before you feel his cold hand on your shoulder, making you flinch.
But he does not take his hand off, if anything, he holds you firmer. it is grounding, but also terrifying. You focus on regulating your breathing while your head throbs and your years ring. His voice turns muffled for a moment before you feel his hand rubbing your back, your heart rating lowering, nearing normalcy.
Snivelling, you peer up at the man looming over you, something you dare to think of as concern is itched on his face as he cups your cheek. You gasp, feeling the cool air on your chapped lips.
When did he take the tape off?
"It will be okay. You are safe now."
Now?
Now?
"I was safe in my home."
Your mouth moves in its own accord but faster than you can regret, mirth dances in his deep dark eyes, the corners of lips lips ticking up.
"And this is your home now."
He declares with finality before his lips align with yours.
****
Happy Halloween everyone!

Frank, how will the world end?
According to various models, the world could end in any of a number of ways:
Nuclear war
Ice age
Super supervolcano
Massive extinction of biosphere-critical species
Galaxy supernova ejecting all protons
Solar system smashed into black hole
Cambrian explosion II
Decay of the vacuum induced by protons on the edge of the event horizon
Burning ghost solar system
Extreme parton fusion in the 10 TeV region
Fatally damaging freeze on the free neutrons in the dibaryon in the resonance transition
All mammals moved to the men's room
Slippery slope that leads to a slippery slope to a slippery slope
Impact of a strangelet
Apocalyptic engine failure
Semantic satiation
Creation of hyperdense E8 vacuum bubble
First autocatalytic bacterial thermodynamic planet
They take offense to being called 'the three stars.'
Superconducting life forms would then try to infect us with their atoms
Water world
Drift in starship crew culture
Octanium dominates as a cooling agent for superconductors
Orgone energy blows past limit of Yudkowsky novel
We were going to write about the end of the world, and then we forgot that we were going to write about the end of the world.

Hi everyone,
I found this cool article about some noise cancellation headphones scientists have made using AI. According to the article:
Scientists have built noise-canceling headphones that filter out specific types of sound in real-time — such as birds chirping or car horns blaring — thanks to a deep learning artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm.
The system, which researchers at the University of Washington dub "semantic hearing," streams all sounds captured by headphones to a smartphone, which cancels everything before letting wearers pick the specific types of audio they'd like to hear. They described the protoype in a paper published Oct. 29 in the journa IACM Digital Library.
Once sounds are streamed to the app, the deep learning algorithm embedded in the software means they can use voice commands, or the app itself, to choose between 20 categories of sound to allow. These include sirens, baby cries, vacuum cleaners, and bird chips among others. They chose these 20 categories because they felt humans could distinguish between them with reasonable accuracy, according to the paper. The time delay for this entire process is under one-hundredth of a second.
The full article will be below if anyone wants to read it:

G/T Fluffy Domestic Story Idea
Okay I highkey wanna write this but idfk when, so if anyone else wants to give it a shot (or already has) lmk so I can read it big plz and thank ;-;
G/t story where friendly giant builds whole house to be Tiny accessible while the tiny sits nearby swinging their legs and watches and chats them up, maybe helping where they can or giving pointers over things they struggle with and would need help for:
Walkways up to counters/higher surfaces
pulley systems?
little ladders and staircases everywhere
hehe some slides for the way down
Ways for tiny to turn on sinks for water/showers
giant makes it so all drains have grate bottoms so there's no risk of tiny falling through
maybe a shoelace attached to faucet so tiny can climb out
Safely carrying tiny
if on shoulder, could be interesting if giant has an earing that tiny can attach a harness to so they can't fall (or maybe tiny just holds onto earing like one of those handles for tall people in trains)
giant makes comfy chest pockets in all the shirts they wear at home
Private nook for tiny's bedroom/nest
with a somehow working toilet XD
a cute little wardrobe filled with clothes either the giant or tiny (or both) made
soft bed, maybe out of a commandeered pillow or some of the giant's old clothes
tiny-sized mirror made from smoothed out shard of a larger one
Little sitting areas all over the house
in front of/on windowsills that get direct sunlight
a mini dining table on top of giant's dining table
Mini greenhouse
for fresh fruits/plants/veggies for tiny to pick/care for themselves
flower garden full of those little flower types <3
maybe a mini water fountain
Food storage spot for tiny that's constantly restocked
teeny containers to keep crumbs and the like fresh
something to keep fresh produce cool??
Appliances
tiny cups/plates/utensils (bought or made by giant?)
whittled down graphite for pencils
maybe a teeny inkwell to dip a pin in for a quill/pen
sheafs of paper meticulously cut into the perfect size for tiny
maybe an old iPhone is bought as a TV for the tiny XD
Ways to make sure tiny stays safe while living with a giant
Giant doesn't wear headphones at home and keeps music low
Tiny is properly accounted for before any cleaning gets done (especially vacuuming HA)
Little bells all over the house so tiny can call for help if they need it
Helium balloons periodically exchanged for fresh ones that tiny can tie around their waist when crossing over the floor so they're easy to spot ;3
----
imma prolly keep adding to this as thoughts come to me, but ye this was stuck in my brain like friggin' glue so I had to spill it out, no two ways about it

What is your take on what Helion is getting up to with their fusion attempts?
So, Helion claims they will be able to produce their own Helium-3 as fuel, and I am eagerly awaiting evidence of this. Also they keep stating that D-He3 fusion is "aneutronic," and that's a bit misleading! You still get neutrons! Less neutrons, but like, still neutrons! However, let's put all that aside and say that their machines work exactly as they hope.
In this case, I'm still a bit skeptical. At the heart of it, Helion's design faces a bit of a fundamental problem: it's a pulsed device.
Tokamaks and stellarators, the more typical magnetic confinement fusion reactors, take enormous amounts of energy to get going, but can run for long periods of time – for a commercial-scale device, the limiting factor is going to be the cooling system that keeps you from melting the vacuum vessel. Wendelstein 7-X, the big stellarator in Germany, can run for eight minutes at a time. The next upgrade to their cooling system will boost that to thirty minutes, and an actual stellarator power plant should be able to run all day.
So even if it takes a ton of power to reach steady state, once you're there, you can ease your foot off the gas. Even without achieving ignition (a self-sustaining fusion reaction) a high-efficiency tokamak or stellarator would achieve economically viable net-positive energy output with a very modest input of power at steady-state.
Anyway, Helion's Field Reversed Configuration (FRC) device is not a steady-state machine. It will generate a pair of FRC plasmas and smash them together ten times a second, while allegedly extracting enough energy out of each pulse to achieve net-positive energy production. I dunno! I wish them the best of luck, but any pulsed device is going to have a hell of an uphill battle.
(Tokamaks are technically also pulsed devices and it takes a good bit of wrangling to get them to run steady-state but I am tactfully refraining from getting into that right now. #TeamStellarator4Ever)

i cannot believe ive never posted this. probably because it looks like shit. anyways heres my pepe silva ass scrawlings about what i think this guy's mods are for.
translation of the nigh unreadable text under the cut
REAL AND CANON DIMA LORE PART ONE: What The Hell Are All Those Doo Dads
(i'll start from the head and go down)
HEAD
functionally blind. constant exposure to moisture from the fog pretty much turned a lot of him into mush and short circuits, including whatever optic nerves he had going on in there. so he mainly relies on sound and memory to get around. some of the shit sticking out of his head actually works like echolocation devices. pickinh up the sound around him and translating it into something that lets him know "oh, theres a fuckin table there. it does not always work. (fun fact: thats the reason why his memory game is based on abstractions and sound. while exploring nick/kellogg's brain we got visual input. dima doesnt have that)
all of the other tubes are basically just typical vacuum tubes. used to reroute voltage to make sure he doesnt overload himself with all the extra mods. make sure you dont stand too close to him during a thunderstorm
TORSO
basically an external disk drive. his main way of utilizing holotapes and shit. i like to draw a lil heart on it
looks like guts. gross. i cant figure out what this would do (i now believe its a liquid cooling system)
LEGS
so it turns out sitting in a damp ass cave on your ass in the dirt for 365 days doesnt do wonders for the skin. especially when that skin is just shitty rubber. basically his fuckin leg parts rotted away and just his metal skeleton remained, which is wrapped in his weird duct tape yoga pants. the metal frames are for extra support. because of this as well as his age he cant really stand for long periods of time (ignore the part where he stands in acadia forever after you get deeper into his questline) and when he INSISTS ON DOING SO he requires some form of mobility aid. usually in the form of faraday or chase walking alongside him
typical synth skeletal feet, but augmented to actually flex/extend like talons. he is weirdly skilled at picking things up with his feet.
BACK
basically his whole back is just Gone, minus the structures needed to hold up those ports because dima is very prone to overheating. was easier to just get rid of anything blocking the flow of air than to install a bunch of heat sinks. faraday's smart but hes on a budget.
these are the cerebral (spinal?) connections he uses to be plugged into his chair (not dissimilar to the placements of the connections in the institute mind wiping chair ☹️)

solangelo x sick!reader
i'm gonna do this one before the 3 part 2s that have been requested
-----------------------------------
you are in the best hands when you're sick
well
one set of hands is good
the other is stressed as fuck constantly
will is a child of apollo
people being injured and ill are his bread and butter
in a non-weird way
he can diagnose you based on vibes
he knows when you need actual medication, ambrosia or nectar, or if you'll be fine with just lying on the sofa for a day and some affection
nico is a nightmare
convinced you're dying when it's literally just hayfever
has to get banished to the store to get chicken soup or something because if will has to deal with him hovering over his shoulder for one more minute he's gonna break the hippocratic oath
not that he took one but it's the principle of the thing
nico doesn't like being away from either of you at the best of times
when you're sick he needs to be near you at all times
you're on the sofa watching tv? head in his lap holding a cool cloth to your head
headache in bed? napping with you, making sure there is no light around you
will is patient with him but rolls his eyes affectionately
will is more likely to leave you to your illness while he does everything around the house so you don't have to worry about anything
you were meant to vacuum the apartment? no worries, he's on it
no cooking for you, he's already making healthy food that boosts your immune system and giving you those little immunity booster shots in the small bottles
they try so very hard, it's so very sweet
------------------------------------------
hope you enjoyed, thank you for requesting!

Hi, I'm Osaka
I write articles mecha and design -- and occasionally I use human-factors-engineering and psychology to make deeply invasive reads of what the future might be like.
The writing is simultaniously equal parts thesis to microfic a lot of the time, so your milage may vary.
I'm also building a very experimental mecha sim which aims to solve long-unresolved problems in the mech-game genre, and in game-design as a whole.

Why Are You a Writer?
So the other day I did the second of my Writer's Refuge interview series, soon to be posted later this week. It went pretty well! It was with an artist on here I admire a lot and it was a really interesting conversation.
Perhaps even too interesting. We got onto the topic on why a person would tell stories, and their answer ended up being drastically different than mine. It ended up sending my on a little bit of a spiral (No fault of yours if you read this, Cass), but I didn't really talk about it with her at the time. You know, it's an interview. It's not about me.
My instinct when I'm feeling emotionally vulnerable is to sort of hide away most of the time, but it's a sleepy day in the Gardener household and I think it might help me to talk about it. So below the read more I'm going to get deeper into the question often asked to people in my trade: why are you a writer?
Spoiler alert: it's because I'm lonely.
No real gravitas or dramatics there, I don't think. Little actual literary merit. I've heard people say that they're writers because they're overtaken by stories, just a vessel to the act of creation that can't help but craft narratives. I think that's cool in theory, and it's something I relate to, but I also think it's a mind type that doesn't exist in a vacuum.
I grew up a child of addicts with about a five and eight-year age gap between me and the rest of my siblings. We were conditioned to be deeply loyal to each other and care in the way our parents couldn't care for us, but most of the time my siblings didn't want to play with me. My parents didn't want to play with me. I had a few friends at school, but not many of them were able to hang out with me outside of campus for one reason or another. Throughout my developmental years I spent a majority of my time on my own, just figuring out different ways to entertain myself.
And I felt a fundamental other-ing from the rest of the people around me. I was precocious, considered "mature for my age" (a poison adults have been feeding the youth for generations), but it went deeper than that. I would speak quickly to my peers, joking almost frantically without letting them get a word in edgewise. It felt like they all knew a common language I was never able to learn and never could. At one point in middle school I told myself I was better than them. i don't think that anymore. Now I'm just confused.
As an adult I'm often confused by other people, sometimes to the point of fear. I struggle to stay afloat in large social situations, to look charming and keep the other person placated and talking, making sure they don't realize the fundamental truth that I'm not supposed to be there. Sometimes it gets to the point where I'm so exhausted that I physically can't look at human faces for hours afterwards. They all look like fleshy slugs.
Does that make sense? I say that a lot in conversation with those around me, a constant plea for validation. Am I making sense?
So I write. I write a lot. With no other line of work at the moment I've been writing about 60k words every month for the better part of the last year. And I do it to tell a story I'm passionate about, sure. I do it to process emotional ghosts from my past. But if I'm being honest with myself I know I write to create a connection between myself and the audience. To create a story that someone can read or watch and say "I understand", even if their interpretation is different than my own.
I do it because I'm lonely. And I'm not really proud of that. But it's the truth.
Riley was surprised when I told them this. So are you saying that if you were happy you wouldn't be a writer? They asked. Well, I am happy. I'm also lonely. These two things can exist at once.
But if I had a different life. A more functional family system that would've likely resulted in me needing far less treatment than I currently do. If all that was the case then I might not see the need to be deeply embedded in my own head. The rest of the world might not come off as the threat it sometimes is. But then again, my life and my identity would be so drastically different that I don't really see the point in speculating.
Would I be a writer? Maybe. I don't know. I'd probably have other hobbies.
I don't usually like talking about myself like this. It feels indulgent. A little too skin-less for my tastes. But, as with anything else, maybe someone younger and in a similar state could read me talking in this way and feel an aspect of comfort. If one person does then that would be worth it. I'm glad I'm a writer and I think I'm a capable one. I'm also aware that being a capable writer doesn't necessarily mean you're also deeply neurotic, which is both a comfort and a small point of envy.
If you've read to this point - which, by the way, is an oddity of cosmic proportions to me, maybe reblog and speak a bit about how you became a writer. But maybe be a little honest with yourself. If it comes from a deep well of pain, that's meaningful. If you just want to create a powerful story that people can lose themselves in, that's also meaningful.
You don't need to suffer to be a good artist. That's absolutely not something I believe to any extent. I'm just one of the ones that did, and that's something I'm going to have to work out over the course of the next rest of my life.
I don't know. I'm rambling. Maybe it can be your turn to talk now.

My second brain: Obsidian
Tumblr media
(I've been meaning to make this post for a while now, so here's my favorite studying software)
So I’ve been using Obsidian as a way to organize all my thoughts and notes, and it’s honestly like having a second brain at this point. It’s been super helpful in keeping track of what I’m learning and seeing how everything is connected.
My Setup
I’ve based my system on the Zettelkasten method, which is all about breaking ideas down into small, manageable notes that can link to each other. I learned about it from a super helpful YouTuber, morganeua. If you're curious, definitely check out her videos!
I use tags to organize my notes, and for each class (or big topic), I have one main note that links to all the related notes. It makes it super easy to find things when I need them.
And the graph view? Amazing. It shows all my notes as little dots that connect to each other, so I can literally see how different ideas are linking up. And the more notes I add, the more connections I see—it’s like watching my brain map itself out in real time!
Seeing Connections
What I love about Obsidian is that it pushes me to connect topics or ideas I wouldn’t normally realize are related. Like, I’ve linked things from my physics classes to stuff I’m working on in philosophy or personal projects. It’s made me much more aware of what I’m learning and how it ties into everything else.
It’s easy to forget that knowledge doesn’t exist in its own little vacuum, but this process reminds me of that. Plus, it’s super satisfying when find those connections, it's like a lightbulb going off in my head. I feel like I’m building this network of knowledge that keeps growing as I learn more.
Why It’s So Rewarding
There’s something really cool about seeing all your notes come together, especially when you didn’t expect them to. It makes learning feel more connected and meaningful. I’m not just writing things down and forgetting about them—it’s more like everything is part of this bigger picture. And that keeps me motivated to keep going.
(I would love to see other systems or software people use for their notes! Also, feel free to drop an ask about my obsidian, I could honestly go on forever)
