four    years    had    passed    since    they'd    broken    up.    three    since    they'd    graduated    high    school,    though    not    from    the    same    school.    nini    had    been    in    los    angeles    for    almost    four    years    now    and    she    had    found    moderate    success.    she    was    happy.    she'd    signed    to    a    small,    indie    label    and    had    been    putting    out    music    regularly,    and    writing    for    other    artists    on    the    side.    she'd    just    moved    into    her    dream    house    and    was    busy    making    it    a    home,    and    she    was    about    to    embark    on    her    first    ever    headlining    tour.    

and    then    her    best    friend    had    called    and    said    she'd    fallen    head    over    heels    for    someone    and    they    were    getting    married,    and    would    she    please    fly    to    prague    for    a    wedding?    and    how    could    nini    say    no    to    kourtney?    she    just    hadn't    expected    that    someone    to    be    big    red.    she'd    never    expected    those    two    to    get    together,    but    a    whirlwind    romance    when    they'd    met    up    at    a    hostel    in    europe    had    been    all    they'd    needed    to    ignite    the    spark.    

she    probably    should    have    been    expecting    that    ricky    would    be    here,    too.    big    red    was    his    best    friend,    like    kourt    was    hers.    but,    they    hadn't    talked    in    nearly    a    year,    since    nini    had    met    brody,    and    started    dating    him    —    he    hadn't    liked    ricky    very    much,    and    made    it    known.    but    now,    nini    was    single,    and    she    was    kind    of    excited    when    she    saw    ricky    standing    in    the    lobby    of    the    hotel    she'd    booked    a    room    in.

❝    ricky...    hey.    ❞    she    says,    taking    a    breath    as    she    starts    to    walk    closer    to    him.    maybe    this    was    a    good    thing.    they    needed    to    talk.    needed    to    catch    up.    she    had    missed    him,    and    finally    freeing    herself    from    the    grip    her    ex    had    on    her    felt    so    good    —    if    she    hadn't    fucked    up    their    friendship    over    the    last    year,    maybe    things    could    be    good    between    them    again.    ❝    this    is    really    weird,    isn't    it?    ❞

she    giggles,    batting    her    eyes    at    him.    ❝    you're    welcome    to    get    caught    up    in    me    for    the    rest    of    our    lives,    my    love.    ❞    this    is    everything    she's    wanted    since    she    moved    across    the    country    and    settled    into    her    new    life    here.    she's    just    wanted    him    to    be    by    her    side    again.    forgetting    about    things    like    needing    more    water    or    to    use    the    bathroom.    all    she    needed    was    to    be    with    ricky.    she    sighs    happily    as    he    leans    his    head    against    hers,    rubbing    her    thumb    against    his    skin.    ❝    i    love    you.    ❞    she    takes    the    toothbrush,    pouting    as    he    untangles    himself    from    her,    but    expression    morphing    into    a    smile    once    he    kisses    her    again.    ❝    i    think    i'll    be    fine    until    brunch.    it's    not    that    long.    ❞    she    says,    reaching    for    the    toothpaste    and    squeezing    some    onto    her    toothbrush.

   ❝    neens- angel, it's fine. i promise. i get that. and if when your lease is up you'd rather renew it to stay in your apartment and we wait for mine to end or something and i can move into yours instead that's fine by me too. we'll just spend practically every night between our two apartments, and it'll be great. it's new york- rent is expensive. i'm excited to see your place. we'll live together when we get there. i'm just happy to be back together. that's more than enough for me.   ❞    now, he'd move in with her tomorrow if that was realistic, but- they have to be adults about this one more thing. it's a perfectly fine compromise to have her back in his life. it was so easy, talking like this. they never had so much time to catch up on between them, but- sharing everything they've missed comes as naturally as breathing. she's the one person he can easily give every part of himself without fear. he nods at her words.    ❝    trust me- i definitely know that feeling…    ❞     sure- he hadn't left home like she did- left salt lake city... but- his home had gone a few thousand miles away to new york. and while he knew people at school, had friends already... no one fills that same place in his life that nini does.    ❝    it really does suck being homesick for a person. especially when you want that person to be happy so much but you don't want to risk hurting your own feelings worse...    ❞    he sighs, tilting his head as he leans into her, hands resting on her arms as she wraps them around him.

she's seen every phase of his life, so she's definitely right about that. and he's very grateful she never went running out. oh growing up... what a mess. but they've always had each other through it all, and now they will again. he has so much to be grateful for. but as he realizes while he thought to get her a change of clothes, he's completely forgotten about literally everything else she might want or need after a night out... too busy enjoying being with her, he feels bad about it. her reassurance is nice though, and he can tell he's not the only one who's sort of let go of the rest of those things like their basic needs faced with this magical reunion.    ❝    okay- okay good… i think i just- completely let myself get caught up in you... in us...    ❞    he chuckles, smiling at her in the mirror as he leans his head against hers.    ❝    i'm really happy you're here too.    ❞    handing her the newly unwrapped toothbrush, ricky sadly unwraps himself from her grip to go and get the glasses from the kitchen.    ❝    i'm going to go get us both some water, baby… do you need some kind of snack or do you think you're okay until brunch?    ❞    he won't leave her yet though, pressing a quick kiss to her lips before he does.
