happy birthday to my favorite rat girl <3
Toni is my teenage Were-Rat sorcerer from a semi-modern dnd campaign, and I love her a lot. I have a lot to say about her but no Idea where to start!
She’s kind but a bit of a punk, big >:) energy. Loud and high energy, with humor that can often come off as rude, but she means well. Very ambitious; she works at her “uncle’s” pizza shop, Papa Pastrolli’s, in New Ork, raising money to try and make ends meet and hopefully go to college someday.
He’s not a blood related uncle, he's more of an adopted guardian that took Toni under his wing after she left home. While her parents did love her, they were awfully distant, which lead Toni to spend more and more time out on the house and one the streets, spending less and less time at home until she eventually never came back. She made the sewers her new home and the rats her new family. The people of New Ork dont take kindly to were-rats, which only made Toni louder and cockier, sometimes flashing a half-transformed rat face at catcallers and other dickheads on the street.
Toni was not born a were rat, however. She was a nerdy preppy kid that hung out at anime club in middle school. One of her peers said they knew a guy who could turn them into vampires, which sounded like the coolest shit ever to Toni, so something something oh whoops she got rat, not bat. (EXACTLY how she got turned im still not sure.) Having to hide this mistake from her parents was a factor of her eventually leaving.
In early high school, when she was part of the punk clique, she and some of her edgier friends went to get piercings (probably from one of their older brothers who recently bought a tattoo gun lmao). Toni chose a helix in her right ear. Unknown to her, the jewelry was silver-plated, and silver is famously one of the most painful and deadly substances for lycanthropes. It instantly started burning her, and out of sheer panic and pain, she ripped the jewelry out, leaving a sizable chunk missing that never grew back. She hid the scar under her hair until it healed enough to look cool instead of gross and painful, and now she thinks it looks cool but probably wouldn’t tell you the story unless you asked.
She joined an adventuring party as a chance to practice her sorcery, as she’s fallen out of practice aside from basic self defense. (TBH I dont remember why I made her a sorcerer, she has way more potential as a physical fighter with pact tactics and race traits but whatever. she knows shocking grasp as a cantrip and I like to pretend its a little keychain taser lmao)
I rolled really damn good on her stats (and the way I did it actually may make these illegal but whatever who cares) so currently she’s level 2 with 14 strength, 15 dex, 20 con, 13 intelligence, 12 wisdom, and 20 charisma. I can't fuckin WAIT to play again so we can get into combat and she can release rats from her backpack to utilize pact tactics and kick SO MUCH ASS
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE send an ask with questions or comments or even birthday wishes. this is the first time I've been able to celebrate the anniversary of a character’s creation and I love her a lot
more artwork under the cut!!
(blood warning tho)
older “bad timeline” Toni with a mullet ^ and with blood v
an post-adventure Toni design by @painofredemption1, who DMs the campaign Toni’s from and technically designed her design’s first iteration! So thank you a bunch friend :) I APPRECIATE YOU A LOT
concept of Toni using the silver chain on her hip as a weapon against fae or other lycanthropes at the cost of burning her hands
aaaaaaaaaand a big fat compilation of slecthes from my sketchbook when I was still figuring out how the FUCK to draw her lol

MEET THE MUSE
► Name ➔ “Greetings, my name is Zelda, it is a pleasure to meet you...!”
► Are you single ➔ “Goodness me, quite the question to start off with, hm? Though courting is nothing unusual for those aiming for the crown, I’ve not sought out any relationships...”
► Are you happy ➔ “Ahah, am I? Though it is easier to just say yes and move on...”
► Are you angry? ➔ “Eh? Not to my knowledge, as I do not have any reason to be angry...”
► Are your parents still married ➔ “Though they are no longer within this realm, I would like to believe their love for each other remained even within the Spirit Realm...”
NINE FACTS
► Birth Place ➔ “I believe it was somewhere within the Lanayru Province, though I could not tell you where, unfortunately... quite funny how it wasn’t within Central Hyrule...”
► Hair Color ➔ “Ah, it is blonde... though it is pretty light...”
► Eye Color ➔ “Blue, quite the common color here...”
► Birthday ➔ “... Fall Equinox is finally here...! My birthday is quite a bore, let us discuss more about the wonders of Fall instead...!” (September 19th for those wondering sadhbjkadsgh)
► Mood ➔ *Radio static sounds* “Hmm? My apologies, do you mind repeating the question once more I did not quite catch it...”
► Gender ➔ “Female...”
► Summer or winter ➔ “Neither of those seasons, I am afraid... though if I had to choose I suppose summer, the winters can be quite harsh here at times. It is the test of the gods... or so my ancestors among others from the Spirit Realm would say...”
► Morning or afternoon ➔ “Ahah, though very un-princess like of me to admit, I do like sleeping in more, waking up in the early hours of the day has made mornings quite unappealing to me, so I prefer the afternoon. It is hard for me to sleep in given my duties, I envy those who spend the whole day asleep ahahah...”
EIGHT THINGS ABOUT YOUR LOVE LIFE
► Are you in love ➔ “I do not believe so, though I love my people, family, and friends I have yet to experience love in that form. Perhaps someday I will but I am in no rush... romance novels and plays more than make up for my lack of romance ahah...!”
► Do you believe in love at first sight ➔ “No. Surprising, is it not? But as romantic as that may sound within the confines of books, I do not believe love works like that. Love is... to me, love is a bond that takes time for it to develop and flourish. The more you wish to spend time with them the more you realize your feelings for them. When you look at it that way, I believe it is far more beautiful than believing you are in love when you first spot the person, looks are superficial...”
► Who ended your last relationship ➔ “I was never in one, ahaha...!”
► Have you ever broken someone’s heart ➔ “As in rejection? I do not believe so, as nobles aiming for my hand in marriage in general do not harbor any feelings towards me, at least I can only assume such is the case, with that assumption in mind it certainly makes rejecting their offers less guilt inducing...”
► Are you afraid of commitments ➔ “It would be a scary day in Hyrule if a ruler were to show fear towards such sentiments, no...? I am not afraid, no. Though, truthfully there’s little I fear...”
► Have you hugged someone within the last week? ➔ “Ahaha, I am positive that the maidens, the oracles, and Link can all vouch for me when I say that I can be quite affectionate towards my friends! I always give them hugs whenever I greet them... not too long ago I hugged one of them when they came over for a short audience...”
► Have you ever had a secret admirer ➔ “Well, it is no longer a secret to anyone when you accidentally found their poem dedicated to you... for their sake I shall not reveal their identity... that being said, aside from them I do not believe I have had any...”
► Have you ever broken your own heart? ➔ “What an interesting question...”
SIX CHOICES
► Love or lust ➔ “Love of course...”
► Lemonade or iced tea ➔ “Apple cider! Oh? Is that considered cheating? My apologies... I suppose iced tea sounds wonderfully refreshing to have during a hot summer’s day, I can imagine myself with a glass after wondering through the graveyard...”
► Cats or Dogs ➔ “Oh I just adore both but cats mostly, they are quite adorable and each have such fun personalities...!”
► A few best friends or many regular friends ➔ “Few best friends, I do not mind meeting with new people but bonds are important to me, I would rather have meaningful bonds with someone rather than friviolous friendships...”
► Wild night out or romantic night in ➔ “A romantic night in... beneath the moonlight... with a wonderful dinner...”
► Day or night ➔ “Night time, it is easier to contact the dead during this time believe it or not...! At least, within my dreams...”
FIVE HAVE YOU EVERS
► Been caught sneaking out ➔ “By the goddesses I cannot begin to tell you the amount of times the guards or Impa have caught me, it is rather embarrassing whenever they would catch me. Just thinking about all those times... goodness, I am sure my face is red now...”
► Fallen down/up the stairs ➔ “Perhaps when I was younger but now...?”
► Wanted something/someone so badly it hurt? ➔ "It is a universal feeling I believe we can all relate to...”
► Wanted to disappear ➔ “No...”
FOUR PREFERENCES
► Smile or eyes ➔ “Ah, it is the eyes I tend to focus! As the saying goes they are the windows to the soul, though I believe that both these things can overlap as a smile can only make their eyes shine with more beauty...”
► Shorter or Taller ➔ “It matters not what their height is...”
► Intelligence or Attraction ➔ “I-intelligence? Hm, yes, that sounds about right...” HOW DOES ONE ANSWER THIS WHEN SHE LIKES WHOLESOME HARDWORKING IDIOTS???
► Hook-up or Relationship ➔ “Hook-up...? My apologies, I do not understand the meaning of this word is it something from a more modern era? But considering the other choice, I believe I can guess what it means... if my guess is correct then I would prefer relationship...”
FAMILY
► Do you and your family get along ➔ “Of course, although... no, nevermind that. It is in the past now. But believe it or not, I have not made contact with either my mother or father since their deaths. But if I could, then I would tell them that... ah, excuse me, it would seem sentimentality has taken over. P-please, do not mind me go on with the next question...!”
► Would you say you have a “messed up life” ➔ “Ahaha,” *MONOTONE LAUGHTER*
► Have you ever ran away from home ➔ “Goodness no.”
► Have you ever gotten kicked out ➔ “... that... I do not believe that is possible now considering my status as sole ruler... unless I were to kick myself out...”
FRIENDS
► Do you secretly hate one of your friends ➔ “Eh? No, I could never! To suggest such a thing... how awful...”
► Do you consider all of your friend’s good friends ➔ “Yes, naturally, I love them all with my heart...” They’re all she has now ;v;
► Who is your best friend ➔ “Ah, I do feel bad for choosing but... Link... he has been through it all... despite our distance our friendship will never wane away, that is what I believe...”
► Who knows everything about you ➔ “That would be... hm... troublesome if someone were to know everything about me.” *sweats while looking at Impa* “I do not even think Link knows too many things about me and vice versa, it is best to keep certain things concealed within the darkness when you live a life like ours...”
ᴛᴀɢɢᴇᴅ ʙʏ: no one i stole it from @cadcnce when he demanded for others to steal and i was like *smirk emoji*
ᴛᴀɢɢɪɴɢ: BE A PIRATE!!!
#dash games.#i actually only have one draft to do and then i'm all caught up *Stares at hands*#BUT THIS IS FUNNY BECAUSE THIS IS JUST ZELDA#going 'welp' and then shutting her mouth shut with duct tape before she can become emotionally vulnerable#hate this hate her hate how she closes up like a calm

The Best of Spring Anime 2018!
Spring has come.
Overall Best
Golden Kamuy
"Immortal" Sugimoto Saichi is a veteran of the Russo-Japanese war. Before his closest friend died, he promised to provide for his friend's wife, and believes he can do so by uncovering a story of hidden Ainu (Japanese minority) gold hidden somewhere in Hokkaido. Alongside Asirpa, an Ainu girl out for justice, they seek the treasure, survive out the wilderness, and make good food off their fresh hunts.
The series is at once exciting and brutal as Sugimoto and Asirpa rush to recover pieces of the map. Each map owner is a minor story arc unto themselves as they are all broken, bizarre, and violent people, driven by their desires and finding the frozen forests of Hokkaido the perfect place for its expression. Sugimoto and Asirpa are roughed up in terrible ways, especially the former, as each stabbing, bludgeoning, and torture bring home the point that the people we're rooting for are not superhumans and that they tend to find themselves in over their heads.
In addition, the story is excellent representation of the Ainu people, their culture intertwining with the story and themes. As Sugimoto and Asirpa run around the island, Asirpa becomes the link between Ainu culture and the encroachment of modern Japan. It's an adventure story, assuredly, but it's also a living memory to a people fast disappearing due to time and modernity. Highly recommended.
Best Drama
Gurazeni (Money Pitch)
The series examines the merciless world of data-driven Baseball from the viewpoint of Natsunosuke Bonda, a left-handed relief pitcher for the Jingu Spiders. The entire work is low-key drama, because the undercurrent of anxiety is very subtle and runs through every episode as Bonda and the pros around him realize they could very well be forced out of the profession they worked long and hard to get in.
It's a fascinating sports anime in that it doesn't rely on high emotions and heroic plays for its drama. Instead, it shows what it takes to be a professional and growing into maturity and the humility and hard work needed for the work at hand. Some may argue that Aggretsuko and Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii are supposedly accurate depictions of growing up and taking responsibility, but compared to those, the struggles present here are far more varied and focus more on the job and personal growth than relationships: Joy, sadness, and worry are expressed within timespans as short as baseball games and triumphs replaced by losses within the span of an inning.
Best Comedy
Hinamatsuri
Yoshifumi Nitta is a yakuza for the Ashikawa-gumi, dealing in real estate. Everything was going well for him until a large silver egg dropped on him from out of nowhere. The egg held a girl named Hina who has powerful telekinetic powers. She decides to stay on and mooch off Nitta, much to his dismay and resentment.
The fantastic thing about this comedy is that the world of Nitta was already weird before Hina came into the picture. This is a world where school-age girls become bartenders serving up drinks better than the best bartenders of Ginza, where the yakuza get their lawyer to write up a speech for a student council election and where everyone yells the same words with the same squeaky intonation when they're hurt. It's cleverly written because the stories rarely ever depend on Hina's telekinesis; it plays on the contrasting expectations people have of each other when they interact and the escalation that happens as they go along with the flow of the story, too freaked out to have the wherewithal to clarify and too curious to stop now.
Honorable Mention
Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online
Kohiruimaki Karen dislikes the fact that she's abnormally tall for a girl. On the suggestion of a friend, she decides to deal with this issue by joining an online virtual reality game called Gun Gale Online. There, she gets to play an avatar with her ideal body form: a short, petite girl wielding a short, petite, weapon, the FN P90. She expresses a unique affinity for the game, being well known in the community for being a skillful player-killer.
Except for a few episodes which act as cool-down between action set-pieces, the bulk is exceptionally entertaining tactical action. The characters ascertain the distance of hostiles and weapon type by their sound, they plan and adapt depending on their location and remaining resources, and they intelligently use and abuse the rules set by the game to get ahead of the competition. Victory isn't achieved by cutesy platitudes and super-cool moves, but by cleverness, thoughtfulness, and a bloodthirsty desire to win.
As divisive as Sword Art Online is, you can dive right in without any knowledge of the original series. Whereas SAO was epic(relatively speaking) in its scope of trying to survive alongside 10,000 other people trapped in a game world, the story here is much more personal, which starts with Karen working out her height issues and ends with her trying to save one single life.
Best Fantasy/ Sci-Fi
Hisone to Masotan
Amakasu Hisone had sleepwalked through most of her life, hoping to someday be able to do something that nobody else can. She ends up in the Japan Air Self-Defense Force with a desk job until one day, she becomes chosen to become a dragon's pilot.
In terms of story and tone, it has a definite point where it can be halved. The change isn't jarring, but you're left to wonder why things weren't foreshadowed well enough. The first half is told as slice of life and magical realism, as Amakasu opens up to her destiny and the daily work of becoming closer to her dragon, Masotan, dealing with people with a stake in the fulfillment of her duties, and her tendency to speak without tact which tends to offend people.
The second half kicks it up a gear and a half as it moves on to folklore, mysticism, and spirituality, as the purpose of the dragons is revealed, tragedy is met, and Amakasu is forced to wake up in service to her future self and the future of Japan. It's not very exciting action-wise (except until the last episodes), but it is very moving, as Amakasu shows a willingness to change, but with a tendency to be ignorant about what to change in the first place. She is groggy, stumbling to growth, challenge, and finally, love.
Best Cute Girl Anime
Comic Girls
Kaoruko Moeta is in a creative slump. Her editor sees potential in this 4-panel comic artist, so she sends Moeta to a dormitory in the company of other Manga artists in the hopes of honing her storytelling and helping her overcome her shyness.
As with most Cute Girls Doing Cute Things (CGDCT) anime, the tone is cozy, the conflicts light and minor and the plotting is thin, so most of the weight is carried by the strength of the characters and the little idiosyncrasies they exhibit that prevent them from becoming too stereotypical.
Is this case, what the characters write and draw often reflects their character. One creates a serialized shonen manga, so she is driven, masculine, and unable to get into girlish things. Another creates teens love manga and erotica so she is elegant, the straight man, and deeply embarrassed for herself. The third writes shonen manga so she fashionable, energetic, and drawn to strong feelings. Moeta writes comedy, and is often the punchline for the episode's plots: Her story pitches keep getting rejected, she is shy and deeply self-deprecating and for some reason, enjoys being doted on by older, mature women.
As someone who draws and writes, I may be a little biased, but I do appreciate anime that explores the lives of creatives (Barakamon and Sore ga Seiyuu! come to mind) and the anime does a decent job of exploring the madness of creation with a dash of cuteness. There is even a layer of bittersweetness via a second set of characters that used to create manga but had to leave it because of real life. A professional manga career may be out of the question, but they're living lives driven by creating and creativity as a little reward for their daring.
Best Girl
Asirpa, Golden Kamuy
Born of the Ainu, and experienced in the hunt, Asirpa is Sugimoto's partner as they run around Hokkaido collecting the maps to a secret hoard of gold that was stolen from the Ainu. Growing up with her father in the wilderness, she never stayed with her family, preferring to stay out for long swathes of time, hunting animals, and providing for her tribe in her own way.
The cruelty of the wilderness and nature hardened her by having her aware of the constant possibility of losing the people and things she cares about. She puts up a front when she needs to, but drops it when Sugimoto and family offer their hand in kindness.
With a fine hunt, knowledge that she is loved, and good food, the deep part of her soul bubbles out and rounds out a strong and compelling character.
Best OP
Rie Murakawa – Distance, Hinamatsuri
TV size - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=St2HefvqnxY
Full size - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riX7EKXSoBQ
If you've ever seen the intro to Puella Magi Magoka Magica, you can tell how extremely deceptive it was by using bright colors, quirkiness, and a cheerful song to hide an anime that explores magical girls as torment and psychological horror. The opening to Hinamtusuri is also extremely deceptive, however, with the intent of comedy, because as straight-faced as the opening song is about yearning and memories, the drama is never as serious the opening makes it out to be. Sure, you'd see the characters staring out with uncertainty and three consecutive scenes of characters crying, but the stories these scenes talk place are played out for laughs. The opening gains even more potency a few episodes in as you get a taste for the series' style and you begin to realize how effective the opening is at being utterly ridiculous.
Best ED
D-Pai – Le Temps de la Rentrée (cover of France Gall's original), Hisone to Masotan
D-Pai version - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgKs3F2NB9w
France Gall original - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBi_Dr_QdaI
The visuals are very simple on this one, which are counted to three:
The female leads of Hisone to Masotan dancing about as if they were still in High School and things were still awkward with the opposite sex.
Quick close up rotations of the various airplanes that the dragons take shape.
Extreme closeups of each female lead during the bridges of the song.
Otherwise I'm picking this one because of the voice actor's perfect rendition of Le Temps de la Rentrée by France Gall. It's unique joy to hear a French song in an anime. It sets them apart from the rest, especially if it is as jazzy and ebullient as this one.

2017 Movie Odyssey for-fun awards
The 2017 Movie Odyssey Awards are being posted sometime soon, but, as is tradition on this blog, here are some for-fun honors and dishonors based on a year of watching 200+ films that were new to me this calendar year.
Actor I wanted to smack most in the face: Mark Wahlberg, The Happening (2008)
Good lord, he was AWFUL. “Planning on murdering me in my sleep?” “WHAT, NO!” Here’s Wahlberg talking to a plastic tree.
Attempted political messaging, but says less than it wants: State of the Union (1948)
Frank Capra, you are better than this!
Attempted religious messaging, but says less than it wants: Conflagration (1958, Japan)
Best Film Title: What Dreams May Come (1998)
Best individual cue from an original score: “End Titles” from Independence Day (1996), composed by David Arnold
Best lyrics passage from an original song: From “No Wrong Way Home” from Pearl (2016 short)
One blue-green world, round as a pearl, doesn’t matter which road you take, you’ll wind up in the same place. That’s not philosophy, it’s geometry, and if things don’t look the same, well it’s only you who’ve changed.
There’s some interesting messaging and rhyming going on here. Damn.
Best Moment: An act of sportsmanship, followed by a grandstand finish, Akeelah and the Bee (2006)
If you have kids and they haven’t seen this movie, find this movie. If you haven’t seen this movie, find this movie.
Best Montage: Body-switching and “Zenzenzense”, Your Name (2016, Japan)
Best Movie Dad: Raymond from My Life as a Zucchini (2016, Switzerland)
The first non-biological father to win here, I think. It matters not, though. He is wonderful here.
Best Movie Family Member, non-parent: Aunt Mattie (Clara Blandick), A Star Is Born (1937)
For supporting Esther’s dreams of going to Hollywood without fail. You go, Aunt Mattie. She really is not in this movie long enough.
Best Movie Mom(s): All of the Boatwrights (Queen Latifah, Alicia Keys, and Sophie Okonedo) and Rosaleen (Jennifer Hudson), The Secret Life of Bees (2008)
Again, a first in that these are adopted parents. Thanks to a good friend of mine for introducing to me the book.
Best on-screen friendship: The friendship between all the orphans in My Life as as Zucchini
Best use of non-original music (and best musical callback to a past movie): The many uses of “You’ll Never Know” from Hello Frisco Hello (1943) appearing in The Shape of Water (2017)
Hello Frisco Hello remains on my watchlist… we’ll get there someday!
Best dance segment (for two): Rita Hayworth and Fred Astaire in “I’m Old Fashioned”, You Were Never Lovelier (1942)
Best dance segment (solo): Donald O’Connor in “A Man Chases a Girl (Until She Catches Him)”, There’s No Business Like Show Business (1954)
Best sword fight: Errol Flynn v. Basil Rathbone, Captain Blood (1935)
Yeah, sorry folks who expected Rey and Kylo Ren v. Praetorian Guards or Kylo Ren v. Luke here.
Bestiality: The Red Turtle (2016, France/Belgium/Japan)
SPOILERS!!!
Biggest Disappointment: Marnie (1964)
Oh god, this may be the first Hitchcock movie I truly loathed (nor do I think it will be the last… I’ve basically seen all the greats by now).
Biggest (pleasant) surprise: Pear Cider and Cigarettes (2016 short)
I was worried about the explicit content for this Oscar-nominated short film, and that it might meander around its topic a bit. But no it didn’t. Well done, well deserved nomination.
Biggest (unpleasant) surprise: Detroit (2017)
It becomes torture porn in the final third. The black victims are not nearly developed enough here as they should be.
Bloodbath: Logan (2017)
Is it the movie with the highest body count? Maybe not, considering I saw both Independence Day movies this year. But it was certainly bloody!
Bravest: Parvana, The Breadwinner (2017)
Going full-out Mulan to help her family survive in pre-American invasion Afghanistan? I was astounded by Parvana’s resilience.
Don’t take opiates, kids: Pink Floyd - The Wall (1982)
Greatest Discovery (Actor): Pierre Étaix, Yoyo (1965, France)
Greatest Discovery (Actress): Brooklynn Prince, The Florida Project (2017)
Greatest Discovery (Director): D.A. Pennebaker, Don’t Look Back (1967) and Monterey Pop (1968)
Hardest ending to watch: The Coward (1965, India)
Satyajit Ray pulling no punches here.
Hypnotic: Notes on a Triangle (1966 short)
A beautiful experimental animated short film. Someone’s going to connect it to the Illuminati or some vast Canadian conspiracy somehow.
Kept me on the edge of my seat: Seven Days to Noon (1950)
A Cold War thriller at the very beginning of the Cold War has so much going for it than so many modern thrillers can never hope to achieve.
Kick-ass moment: This riding scene from The Man from Snowy River (1982)
I’d like to see a chimpanzee with dual-wielding machine guns do that! Make it happen, 20th Century Fox!
Laziest (not worst) film title: Summer Magic (1963)
I mean, the songs are decent and Hayley Mills is, too. But come on, Disney!
Least funny comedy: That Funny Feeling (1965)
Least likely to deserve my negative review 10 years from now: Justice League (2017)
Because you know Zack Snyder will find a way to screw the DCEU up even more.
Least likely to deserve my positive review 10 years from now: I have a hunch it’s gonna be Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017)… but I don’t want that to be official here.
Line I will repeat the most down the years: “Apes. Together. Strong.”, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) and War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)
Made fashion designers compelling: Funny Face (1957)
Most Inspiring: Swim Team (2016)
A documentary that follows three members of a New Jersey Special Olympics swim team. All those kids have autism, and it is fantastic to see them learn, grow, and live over time. It isn’t a Hoop Dreams, but it doesn’t need to be.
Made me laugh the most: Blackbeard’s Ghost (1968)
And I’m not ashamed to say that. It’s not the best comedy by any means, but I got more laughter and mileage out of this one than anything else.
Most Memorable Use of an Icepick: Scarlet Street (1945)
Don’t spoil if you know!
Most Overrated Picture: Manchester by the Sea (2016)
Casey Affleck had no business winning that Academy Award.
Most Underappreciated: The Great Man (1956)
In our world of “fake news”, this movie - which also comments on how we idealize our heroes - has many echoes on today. It’s a good journalism/news media movie, even if it’s concentrated on early TV and especially radio.
Most Underseen: Bardelys the Magnificent (1926)
A good, entertaining adventure-romance silent film with John Gilbert and Eleanor Boardman. The reason why it’s underseen was because it was considered a lost film until recently, when a near-complete print turned up in France.
Movie I most wished to write on, but wasn’t able to (because I ran out of October to do it): A retrospective on Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) and regular reviews for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) and War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)
Movie that I’m most eager to rewatch: Castle in the Sky (1986, Japan)
There was so much going on, and so many departures from Nausicaa that I need time to do a Retrospective review on this some day. It’s a gorgeous film.
Nearly resulted in someone killing me in a theater: In This Corner of the World (2016, Japan)
Yeah, if the main character had gone to Hiroshima, I would have been a goner (and it wouldn’t have been by my own hand).
Raunchiest: Destry Rides Again (1939)
Holy hell. There are so many entendres in here, and Marlene Dietrich is going all out on the sexuality! How did this get pass the Hays Code?
Sorry, I didn’t get it, and I still don’t get all the love for David Lynch (even though Mulholland was great): Eraserhead (1977)
Sounds most like a porno (other than Octopussy because that’s too easy): Peeping Tom (1960)
With apologies to Michael Powell.
Star Trek alumni award: Patrick Stewart, Logan (2017)
Surprisingly relevant political commentary: They Won’t Forget (1937)
Northern-Southern attitudes in the United States? Even a touch of racial relations? Now if only Warner Bros. kept the defendant in the movie Jewish, as he was in real life.
Underrated: Lonely Are the Brave (1962)
One of the best neo-Westerns you are likely to see.
Worst film title: The Hound That Thought He Was a Raccoon (1960)
For chrissakes, Disney.
Worst Moment: All the rapey-ness of Revenge of the Nerds (1984)
It reminded me why the 1980s is in contention for my least favorite decade of filmmaking.
Stay tuned, the 2017 Movie Odyssey Awards will be up shortly! Thank you all for following. Thank you all for being here for as long as you have. Thank you for supporting all this blog does.

How to crouch in gta 5?

Analytical Reflection
As we look throughout history and examine the themes and patterns of people’s reactions to new technology, as well as looking at the current response people give to our modern world, it can be easy to predict future techno-panics. While different technology is discovered and evolved, the pros and cons are brought forward about the product and its contribution to the well-being of society. As the study of technology and its capabilities are brought forward, it can be clear that there are connections and themes between many different types of technology.
Phase I: Techno-Panic Throughout History
A techno-panic is the mass fear of certain technology and its effect on society. As we read about in class, some of the devices that people were historically afraid of look silly when we see how they assist us today. However, as new technology arises, often spectators focus on the negative aspects of new technology rather than the things it could contribute. As it says in “Technopanic Throughout History #1”, there are different things that can drive these techno-panics. This can include them remembering how things were in the past, seeing bad reviews of the product, the role of the media exaggerating scenarios, and the list goes on. Both in ““Technopanic Throughout History #2” and the articles we talked about in class, some of Kurzweil predictions have been proven to be true as time has gone on. Looking at the predictions for the future, some feel that some of the changes are very unnerving. Thinking of all the things that must happen sequentially to lead up to some of those predictions makes people not want to see such changes.
Having technology at our fingertips brings forth a whole new generation of children. Often, it can be controversial as to whether children being immersed in so much technology at such a young age is good or bad. Because this is such a new idea, and no other generation has been brought up with so much technological capability at such easy accessibility, there can be a fear of how this generation turn out when they are able to start contributing to society. Often an argument is that children are losing their work ethic due to many things being done by technology. How this could affect the future workforce will bring forward a whole new skill set in people but could come with other skills lacking.
Phase II: The Future of the Body
With new technology comes new capabilities for what the medical field can accomplish and what help they are able to help their patients with. As the methods of medicine are changing from what they have been historically, this can create a techno-panic. For example, as it says in “The Future of the Body #1”, there is the potential of having a chip installed in humans that contains much of their personal information, including their medical records, that can be used to aid the reduction of online medical files. This could also help to allow medical personnel to access medical files at a much quicker rate in the case of an emergency. However, if this technology becomes a normality, those who do not want to participate with the installation of the chip in their body would almost be forced to due to the way of life.
It was both talked about in class and in both “The Future of the Body #4” and “The Future of the Body #2”, prosthetic limbs are becoming more and more advanced in their capabilities. I remember there was a year of the Olympics where there was the controversy of letting one of the racers run due to her prosthetic leg. They were unsure if her prosthetic gave her an unfair advantage to the rest of the runners. As prosthetic limb abilities heighten, they are able to be controlled by different muscles in the body. This could be related to the phase on cyborgs that was discussed later in the year as humans are being able to control technology with their own movements. Some fear that eventually technology and humans will become one being and will be reliant on each other equally. However, with the case of prosthetic limbs, I see that the patient needs some sort of assistance due to their lack of a limb, and them having the ability to control their own movement allows for them to feel like they have the same capabilities as someone who has all their limbs. It gives hope to those who do not have a limb.
Phase III: Intelligent Systems
Arguably the most controversial subject we covered this semester, intelligent systems covers a wide range of topics. One of the devices that are in the spotlight is Sophia the robot. Found in “Intelligent Systems #1”, Sophia can make facial expressions and speak automated messages in response to what you say to her. She is able to hear and retain information, and as she hears more, she “learns” more information. One of the misconceptions about Sophia and artificial intelligence as a whole is that she is able to think for herself and make decisions based on her own understanding. This is untrue as Sophia only learns new information by hearing what others say first. Due to this misconception, many believe that someday robots like Sophia will become much smarter than humans, take over the world and turn against humanity; however, this fantasy is highly unlikely. As it is alluded to in the video of “Intelligent Systems #1”, the narrator states that Sophia can read other people’s feelings and emotions. This statement is partially true due to Sophia’s ability to recognize facial expressions because of some of her pre-set knowledge. However, this idea makes people believe that Sophia is able to read people’s mind and thoughts which creates a techno-panic amongst the public. As the artificial intelligence company that created Sophia, Hanson Robotics, aims to make Sophia’s abilities sound as amazing as they can, some of her capabilities tend to be exaggerated and misunderstood. This is an example where misinformation in the media can affect people’s ideas and thoughts on a topic.
The next intelligent system discussed is self-driving cars. This system brings up a moral dilemma and scenario of whether the driverless car should save the passengers of the vehicle or five pedestrians crossing the road in front of the car if that event were to take place. Because there is not necessarily a specific right answer to this question, and as it states in article “Intelligent Systems #2”, there has been an incident where a driverless Uber vehicle hit and killed a bicyclist, it is understandable that there could be some fears and moral struggles with this technology. Some articles that we read in class even went as far as to say that we should be focusing on improving public transportation and working on making that more efficient rather than worrying about creating driverless vehicles. However, is this idea an issue of people living in the past and not wanting to move on, or is it a reasonable idea? I feel that we will slowly move out of public transportation in the future. Having a horse with a buggy was the most innovative transportation at one time, but if we imagine someone driving their horse and buggy in the city today, we would laugh and think that idea is absurd. When automobiles first were driven on the roads, many people feared the way they would affect horses riding on the road. This relates to the way I predict the effect driverless vehicles will have on public transportation.
Phase IV: Making and Things
The technology of 3D printing allows for things to be made precisely at a much cheaper cost due to the material used for the printing. As it was brought up in class and in the article “Making and Things #1”, the cheaper cost of prosthetics and other medical devices that 3D printing provides allows a wider range of patients to be able to afford such assistance. Many times, as it shows in the article “Making and Things #4” those in war or in other countries are two common recipients of this help. Clearly, the material of plastic would be much cheaper than the standard material used for making prosthetics. Printing in 3D also gives the opportunity to have customized prosthetics, bones, hearing aids, and the like to serve each patient with the exact help they need at a cost they can afford.
The ability to 3D print is also a benefit to manufacturers as they are able to make their products at a much faster rate and have lower expenses. It also creates the ability for anyone with a 3D printer to created anything they want right at their home. This can be related to having a cell phone at your fingertips with internet access. As I mentioned earlier, some people say that children are losing their creative abilities, but this technology could turn this idea around. More innovation could happen right in people’s homes and new technology and inventions would continue to be created.
Phase V: Cyborgs and Bioart
As I mentioned earlier, the dependence of technology on humans and humans on technology is becoming more popular as more technology is invented. Some predict and are experimenting with the idea of future generations having an ordinary central nervous system, but having that be attached to a technological system. Some prosthetic limbs that are connected to nerves and muscles could even be viewed as the start to cyborgs. For another example, as mentioned in source “Cyborgs and Bioart #1”, some scientists have already created a cockroach cyborg where they have connected a battery pack to the antenna of the cockroach to control when it went in and out. As this technology progresses, people start to fear that this will become a normality and they will be required to become a cyborg to be a part of society. However, humans are the very people creating such technology. The techno-panic of robots taking over the world can be related in the way that robots will be taking over humans, which some may then fear will take over the world.
The science of evolution describes this technology of cyborgs as the next evolution. To stay relevant in the world, humans will need to get “updates” for their survival. This is all a prediction and a fantasy, but it can be seen how this scenario could create techno-panic. However, the medical field is using a type of cyborg for good. In source “Cyborgs and Bioart #3”, a video shows how a man is now able to perform tasks almost as normal due to his muscles controlling his prosthetic arm. It can be seen in this cyborg that rather than the technology controlling him and his movement, he is controlling it. This can be a misconception that people may have about cyborgs that causes them to formulate so many fantasies about the future of cyborgs. Often, due to the way the media portrays certain cyborgs, people may feel that technology is controlling humans when that is not the case.

Making sense of the Nonsense: A Johnlock ( conspiracy ) meta
“Truth is rarely pure and never simple” ---Oscar Wilde
“Truth is a metaphor, willed into existence” ---Nietzsche
First of all can conspiracy be possible after all these shit happened? Of course, why not, especially when there is a fair chance that another episode may pop up someday sooner, then it’s obviously possible.
A Modern Nightmare:
One fine morning Gregor Samsa woke up and found that he had transformed into a despicable vermin overnight [source]. Sherlock season 4 is exactly the same thing, came out in a crisis time of human civilization and proved to be a modern nightmare.
The whole series is full of inconsistencies and it is unlikely that 3 different directors will repeat the inconsistent things over and over, unless it is deliberate. It’s impossible to address all the inconsistencies in one meta ( I have an exam soon :( ). But let’s start from TST.
The infamous skull hell:
The skull hell is one of the most infamous inconsistencies in S4. The skull continued to glow and un-glow throughout the series.
Does it have a possible explanation? Well then, it basically has. It may refer to a Hitchcockian shot. The milk scene from the movie Suspicion:
“Suspicion” tells the story of a woman who suspects her husband is trying to kill her. There’s one scene in the film that really jumped out.
That’s the scene where Joan Fontaine’s character is in bed, fearing the worse and her husband, played by Cary Grant, brings her a glass of milk. The camera follows Cary Grant coming up the stairs and as he continues something strange stands out about the glass of milk. It’s bright and bold in the frame. Is he trying to poison her? That’s certainly what we thought when we first it.
That was Hitchcock’s intention, actually. He put a light in the glass to highlight it in the shot to get the audience to wonder what was going to happen next. It’s a simple, but ingenious, technique.

youtube
Ostalgie:
In TST, when Sherlock went to hacking genius ( is he Russian?) Craig for some help Craig tells him about “ostalgie”
CRAIG’S HOUSE. Craig is sitting at his computer typing while Sherlock stands behind him. CRAIG: Have you heard of that thing, in Germany? SHERLOCK: You’re going to have to be more specific, Craig. CRAIG: ‘Ostalgie.’ People who miss the old days under the Communists. People are weird, aren’t they? SHERLOCK: Mm. (He narrows his eyes momentarily.) CRAIG: According to this, there’s quite a market for Cold War memorabilia – Thatcher, Reagan, Stalin. (He smiles.) Time’s a great leveller, innit? Thatcher’s like – I dunno – Napoleon now.
Then When Mary was wandering from one place to another to escape her consequences, we got a Thatcher era ( cold-war communism era/pre-1991 ) flight check of some sort, why it is? Ostalgie? Mark Gatiss hates conservatives, but is does not necessarily mean he is inclined to left. I don’t know. Anybody?
USSR, East Germany, West Germany, Quebec do not exist anymore.
Mary’s weird-ass redemption wank:
Mary was predicted to be dead by the end of Season 4, but so sooner in TST? And with a redemption wank saved for her? To save Sherlock in a physically impossible way? A sacrifice?
The whole Aquarium-scene is superficial and so wrong. There are so many theories floating around, One is the alibi theory: John actually shot Mary, and Sherlock lied to Ella to hide John’s deed. Not impossible.
Read more on my Fragmented Perception meta and here is another beautiful theory by @shawleyleres Dreaming, Memory and Tidal Waves
OK lets move towards TLD
Apparently TLD is a better episode than the other two episodes of this particular season. But that does not mean this is devoid of weird facts. But when TST has seemingly trivial ones, the facts are bigger. I am not going to elaborate, but just discuss some points.
1. Faith Smith and her note, who actually took down the note? Culverton confessed that his own daughter wrote it and he provided Sherlock with that note. Is he reliable?
2. Was Eurus actually with Sherlock when she came disguised as Faith Smith?Or it’s a mere delusion?
3. Culverton did not seem to be that grand a villain like Moriarty or Magnussen. Of course he was nasty, but... also what's the point of secret doors and was he really judged or got pardon by bribing the authority.
4. Ghost Mary as John’s subconscious (seriously WTF)
5. And many more...
TFP then.
Before going to TFP aka The Fake/Fucky Problem lets discuss some salient features of Eurus Holmes:
The psychiatrist/Faith avatar:
Umm a visual parallel first.
oops. Arkham/Azkaban/Shutter Island/Sherrinford?, uhh. Eurus even disguised as a therapist as Harley.
The gunshot wank:
Well look at the picture, first is from the first scene of TLD, and last is Eurus’s hand. Spot the difference, Eurus’s hand is sleeveless but the hand in the first picture is blue/black sleeved? Why is the difference, is the first hand is of John, before killing Mary? is it Sherlock’s hand?
Back to TFP, or the worst episode ever. It’s like the Limbo phase of the nightmare. Sherlock always alludes to many movies, books, comics, TV series and makes many references to other media besides the original canon. In TST they went for Appointment in Samarra by William Somerset Maugham [an unhappily married gay doctor/veteran/spy/storyteller], made a reference to Macbeth [ i.e. “By the pricking of my thumb”], In TLD we got references of George Orwell’s 1984 frequently[”Big brother is watching you” etc] and also a whole big dialogue from Henry V [ Shakespeare was gay or at least bisexual ]. They alluded to V for Vendetta,in TRF, and in TAB referred to Inception and a rather unknown but a radical intellectual movie La Haine [ full meta here ]. So they preferred rather intellectual/cult movies or stories/novels/dramas to make allusions.
But TFP seems more like a disjointed montage of horror movies/psychological thriller. No ACD, but a mix-up of Saw, The Shining, The Ring, Suicide Squad, Shutter Island, Exorcist, Silence of the Lamb and many other horror movies, directly adapted scenes from them and combined them with bad CGI effect.
I am not going to rant but TFP brought back some unpleasant childhood memories which were deeply buried in my id before.[ ”Books are well written or badly written, that is all”---Wilde, again]
So yes a psychological analysis is possible. @shawleyleres, @the-7-percent-solution, @jenna221b, @marcespot and many others have already started analyzing, I had to fight with my emotions after this cursed episode ( literally episode no. 13) and after that I came to realize that this episode is FAKE.
So many points, so many parallels, this is our deepest limbo, or is it Sherlock’s, is it John’s?
First of all lets see which predictions made before or after the release of S4 apparently came true:
1. Sherlock has a secret sibling.
2. Sherrinford is a prison where Eurus is institutionalized.
3. There will be a game which will not end.
4, Sherlock will have to choose between Mycroft & John.
5. Mycroft’s umbrella is a secret weapon ( a crack theory )
But it was never predicted that this episode would turn out to be so bad and out of context.
An analysis:
Eurus gave a puzzle in her childhood which would supposed to be solve the redbeard problem, but it turns out that it was actually about a little girl lost!!!
Sherlock can’t sense there is no glass before Eurus’s cell!!!Sherlock ignoring Vatican Camios!!!
The whole Molly Hooper thing and she is talking to a lock screen!!!
3 Garridebs dangling!!!
The infamous snake-mating dance between Harley Quinn & Joker and Joker giving up his life happily to play posthumously!!!
Background music:“I need a gangsta, to love me betta, than all the others do”!!!
John chained in a well and getting rescued with a rope!!!
Who was chained in the bottom of hell-fire and got out without any effort and made a palace as if chains did not exist? SATAN [Paradise Lost, Book I, same inconsistency]
[Laughs out Loud]. FAKE
Only explanation, NIGHTMARE
If it is Sherlock’s Nightmare:
This theory goes like this:
Eurus is Sherlock’s anima, he is in EMP, and probably in the tarmac hell still. Victor Trevor is John’s mirror, a childhood John. Sherlock somehow was indirectly responsible for Victor’s sad demise. He constructed a parallel universe, and disguised his memories in the shapes of complex metaphors. Especially when Sherlock was talking to Eurus at the end, comforting her, it sounded like he was telling this to himself:
We're going to crash! I'm going to die! Argh! [HE GASPS FOR BREATH] I think it's time you told me your real name. I'm not allowed to tell my name to strangers. But I'm not a stranger, am I? I'm your brother. I'm here, Eurus. You're playing with me, Sherlock. We're playing the game. The game, yes, I get it now. The song was never a set of directions. I'm in the plane. I'm going to crash. And you're going to save me. Look how brilliant you are. Your mind has created the perfect metaphor. You're high above us, all alone in the sky, and you understand everything except how to land. Now, I'm just an idiot, but I'm on the ground. I can bring you home. No. No, no. It's too late now. No, it's not, it's not too late. Every time I close my eyes, I'm on the plane. I'm lost, lost in the sky and... no-one can hear me. Open your eyes. I'm here. You're not lost anymore. [SHE SOBS] Now, you... you just, you just went the wrong way last time, that's all. This time, get it right. Tell me how to save my friend. Argh! Eurus, help me save John Watson.
Well I am now referring to @shawleyleres‘s metas: X X X
By the way was Benedict referring to this whole Eurus-Sherlock conversation as a monologue? IDK. This theory does not convince me of John’s meeting with Eurus twice.
So, yes now move to another::
If it is John’s Nightmare:
According to this theory, John was having a nightmare after he was shot by Eurus; this theory explains the Bond air thing, the spinning John, the underestimated cowardice Mycroft, all the horror movie melange, the drone, dangling Garridebs( John’s actually in the Garridebs situation himself ), the Victor-Trevor-as-John’s-mirror thing, the rope rescue, the fear of Adl0ck and Sher1o11y, the cheesy cuts at the end of the episode, but for me this theory does not explain the whole Sherlock-Eurus interaction at all.
On defense of this theory I can give you the excellent video meta by @marcespot and this meta
Ok, now let me tell you what do I think:
Can a shared nightmare be possible?
I really don’t think so, but really re watching TFP more and more makes us to think of TAB. @marcespot‘s theory seems quite convincing to me, also this post made by our senpai @inevitably-johnlocked but I really think Sherlock’s anima is Eurus. But I never think Sherlock’s still in tarmac hell, because many reasons...one of them is Porlock. I rather believe that TST is full of real, unreal, surreal, dream sequences, memories i.e. fragmented perceptions. I think TLD serves the purpose of both a third person narrative and the characters’ perspectives, but TLD have a semi-Senecan ghost device, a disguised psychiatrist/therapist, only Sherlock can see someone aka disguised Faith Smith and many other weird fact. One of which is the background TV-video of Culverton’s hospital which showed us jumping sheep, according to @tigressthetiger which signifies falling asleep:
Look even the dialogue is fitting.
Well I am not talking about a shared dream, but what if TFP is the mixture of both Sherlock & John’s two different dreams? Unlikely but umm. I don’t know how to pull off this kind of complex thing. Maybe S4 was really bad-writing ( except it is not )
Well then, when I rewatched TFP, it seemed to me John’s horror-dream, only John’s horror dream until this scene:
From the above scene it seemed to me the dream of nobody other than Sherlock.
The melodrama, the metaphors, all the signs make me convinced it’s Sherlock’s dream. Or self-conversation?
The whole nursery rhyme thing recited by Eurus does not bring any solution to Red-beard’s murder case. Just because Eurus is evil? Why just why? No explanation. Also the only alive girl in Bond air, whose mirror was she?
Eurus served as both Sherlock’s and somehow John’s mirror, while Victor is clearly John’s childhood:
P.C. @jarlie86art
From John’s rescue by the rope it again seemed to be John’s nightmare ( Argh! background Mary’s voice-over, cheesy cuts, a platonic parentlock WTF)
Also what’s the point of the whole Musgrave false graves, the moor, children playing... a direct callback of a disturbing novel by Emily Bronte : Wuthering Heights, also of Bronte sisters’ childhood and disturbing/haunting memories.
CONFUSING!!!! because unlike TAB, TFP is not still confirmed as a dream by the writers. Also when in John’s perspective the horror movies are of mostly male point of views, Sherlock’s POV finds reference from Victorian/Gothic horror novels which are from female point of view!!! ( “Sherlock is actually a girl’s name”, “ East wind was basically me”, Sherlock has a demonic anima archetype etc)
On author’s sublimity and ‘Insane wish fulfillment’:
First of all TAB was a gay fever dream with powerful women characters and a male villain (i.e. Moriarty). TFP was exact opposite, queerbaiting, disturbing, misogynist, and a psycho female villain: Ebony Darkness Dementia Raven Way Eurus Holmes.
Why this 180 degree turn? TAB had some of the excellent-most editing in TV history, TFP has none, we can even see the green screen in the graphics.
My intellect does not want to agree with the idea that TFP was simply bad writing, and the crew were smoking weeds all the time. It could be said if there were no previous seasons, especially if there was no TAB.
So, why did Mofftiss do so, Just to fuck up with us? Just to prove us wrong, since TAB was predicted by TJLC accurately? Or just to fake the show’s death? The actual Richenberg redux? I have no answer of these questions, umm perhaps I have. Why they have called TFP as insane wish-fulfillment?
They have transformed all their childhood traumas, disturbing memories into one episode.
According to Freud and other psychologists sublimation is one of the highest coping mechanisms, authors tend to use literature as a vehicle of fulfilling unfulfilled wishes, desires and transform their traumas into arts.
I don’t know if you agree or disagree with this statement. But this is not the most impossible thing. Johnlock is not yet confirmed. The series can really comeback if and only if TFP is a confirmed, otherwise we are more intelligent than Mofftiss. #Give-Us-a-4th-Episode-Soonish
TL;DR: To quote @shawleyleres , S4 is not fake, 100% real in Sherlock’s or John’s Mind.
Instead of having a specific cliffhanger, TFP itself is a massive cliffhanger
Long live conspiracy, and long live TJLC

cultivation
Slovenians have a wonderfully untranslatable - and, to most, unpronounceable - word for someone like me: Vrtičkar. It’s a word used for a hobby gardener (†) who’s more interested in drinking beer with other vrtičkars than in growing vegetables or flowers. A cover for conviviality.
At risk of fulfilling the sneaking suspicions of family and friends, this is exactly what I’ve been doing since moving to Slovenia in January. To put it in colloquial American terms that I’ve missed being able to use, I’ve been schmoozing & schnoobing.
This is how I first met Luka Rojnik, CEO of Rojnik Hops. Appropriately, it was at a bar and, even more so, over quite a few drinks. There is, no doubt, a linear relationship between number of hops produced and number of hops consumed. Luka is something like the 6th generation and his family’s farm is the second largest hops producer in Slovenia.
Shortly after, we met in daylight on the Rojnik farm in Slovenia’s Savinja Valley. It was mid-March and the family was just dusting off the hop yards for the next season. Luka’s father drove a tractor with a blade attachment through bare rows, hacking off the old, knotted hop rhizomes at the point just before they breach the soil. A rude, but oxygenating, awakening.
In the next row over, a farmhand and seasonal workers from Romania planted new seedlings. A nod to another year of increased hop acreage.
Except, those seedlings are noteworthy. Instead of planting more of the hop types Slovenia’s known for (Styrian Golding, Aurora, Celeia, etc.), they’re an experimental varietal, still in testing at the Slovenian Institute of Hop Research and Brewing (IHPS), just a short five-minute drive from Rojnik’s hop yard. Someday, this varietal may get one of those silly new hop names, but for now it’s simply called Breeding Line 102/44.
IHPS’ hop catalogue is a veritable trading card collection for each hop on the IHPS team, covering all of 102/44′s career highlights, as short as that career may be. Batting average (alpha-acids: 6.0 - 12.0%), strikeouts (ripening time: medium early), RBI’s (storage stability: good), home runs (notes of black currant, marjoram, black tea, and lemongrass).
When I asked Luka about the hop aroma, he supplied a more simple descriptor. “Juicy,” he said, a term that could sound like a marketing ploy. If craft beer had a Billboard Top 100 for hit flavor profiles, “juicy” - and all the associated olfactory notes - would crowd the entire top ten. Except the IPA craze has already outlived the height of Sgt. Pepper’s record-breaking Beatlemania.
After 120+ consecutive years of hop-growing, the Rojnik’s have earned the right to cultivating these exciting, highly sought after varietals. Although 102/44 only recently found it’s way into Slovene hop yards, this transition marks years of testing and analysis at IHPS. Prior to getting the green light, each breeding line is run through the ringer to ensure compatibility with the climate and soil of the Savinja Valley, resistance to local pests and common diseases, and overall yield per hectare.
So far, it’s looking good for 102/44.
The 2016 harvest was the first time 102/44 was made available to select brewers. Mostly those with a personal connection to Luka or, sometimes, used by Luka himself. Adding his own modern mark to the Rojnik family tradition, Luka started a small craft brewery in a building adjacent to their hop fields. It’s called Green Gold Brewing and dedicated entirely to using Slovenian hops. A first amongst the rising number of Slovenian craft breweries, who largely rely on hops like Centennial, Cascade, and Chinook from the United States to achieve the desired notes of American-style IPAs.
But there are always outliers. At the Ajdovščina-based craft brewery Pivovarna Pelicon, I was lucky enough to sample Walter Wheat, an American-style wheat beer containing, surprise, a generous dose of 102/44.
credit: Pivovarna Pelicon
Luka was right: juicy.
As I continue to schmooze my way onto the Rojnik’s farm, I’ll be keeping an eye on 102/44 and all the varietals that, until now, have been hiding behind the scenes here in Slovenia.

2: do you like the feeling of cold air on your cheeks on a wintery day?
Yes and no... for like the first day of winter when it’s all pretty and pristine but when it get’s to the point of ‘fuck me do i still have toes?’ I’m over it.
4: how do you take your coffee/tea?
I like my coffee with french vanilla creamer and lovingly call it my princess froofroo bullshit drink. On the tea side of things I like herbal without anything added becuase I feel like a fairy drinking flower water.
6: do you keep plants?
I love thinking I could, but the only plant I haven’t killed is the one that I keep in my papa’s sunroom where I’m never anywhere near it because everything I touch dies screaming.
8: what artistic medium do you use to express your feelings?
Is internal screaming a viable medium? I like to think I can write, but that’s still under investigation
10: do you sleep on your back, side, or stomach?
I’m all over the place, you can usual tell by my hair tho. Seeing as it sticks straight up on whichever side I sleep on.
12: what's your favorite planet?
Jupiter!! It has all those awesome moons that are v cool.
14: if you were to live with your best friend in an old flat in a big city, what would it look like?Hmmmmm, it’d probably be a homey mess of books, fandom knicknacks and random coffee mugs with random socks laying everywhere. (there may or may not be a smiley face painted on the wall that is outlined with bullets.. crazy night..)
16: what's your favorite pasta dish?
I’m very uncultured so spaghetti is how imma roll
18: tell us about something dumb/funny you did that has since gone down in history between you and your friends and is always brought up.
oh god, you mean every other moment I’m in their presence? My shining moment would probably be when I had a minor stroke after getting v excited about making cinnamon pancakes for @klskipper13 and I stuttered so bad I said “ Cinininamonon pancancancakes”
20: what's your favorite eye color?
Probably green!
22: are you a morning person?

26: what are the shoes you've had for forever and wear with every single outfit?
YOU MEAN THE ONES THAT JUST BROKE AND I’M STILL GRIEVING OVER. They’re brown combat boots that go to just under my knee with laces all the way up. I lovingly named them my Katniss boots, may they rest in peace.
28: sunrise or sunset?
I like the idea of sunrise. There’s just something about beginnings that make me all poetic and shit
30: think of it: have you ever been truly scared?
Yup, 100% when my friend and I got busted after drinking at her mormon grandmothers house. In retrospect, probably should have done it elsewhere.
32: tell us a story of something that happened to you after 3AM when you were with friends.
At my 13th bday party my friends and I were staying at a house on a golf course and we streaked nude up and down the 18th hole. Till this day I wonder if they had surveillance cameras.
34: tell us about the stuffed animal you kept as a kid. what is it called? what does it look like? do you still keep it?
It was a doe deer beanie baby named Whisper. She was that stuffed animal that went everywhere with me. At age 12 I lost her somewhere at my cousins house and am still sad about it till this day. She had one eye and a pink nail polish stain on her chest. Bonus story: my oldest friend @haleygalik had that same beanie baby and gave it to me since I was so upset about losing mine. I still have Whisper 2.0 till this day

38: tell us about your pet peeves!
Dogs that beg when you try to eat. My dad passed that down to me. I will literally stare a dog straight in the eye and eat slowly. Don’t get me wrong, I love dogs more then humans, but that bothers me. I also get very twitchy when a computer desktop is just full of icons (yes I’m talking about you Tay.)
40: think of a piece of jewelry you own: what's it's story? does it have any meaning to you?

There’s a shop that’s in our town called grump monkey. Its small and kinda modern themed but still comfy.

The fact that Barbara Dunkelman from Rooster Teeth is so bad at puns she gave herself the title Barbara Punkelman....
48: what was your biggest fear as a kid? is it the same today?
Being abducted by one of the aliens from Signs. Well duh.
50: what's an odd thing you collect?
Tbh I don’t collect anything really... but I do have a thing about small intricate boxes and bottles. I don’t usually keep them long tho. I move a lot.
52: what are your favorite memes of the year so far?
The only one I’ve noticed is the thing with the cowboy hat. I’m not the most observant

I just saw a friend of my mom’s who’s brother passed away, that was rough.
56: what are some things you find endearing in people?
It is so great when people talk with their hands more and more as they get excited. The best story tellers look like they’re being pulled around by a drunk marionette person.
58: who's the wine mom and who's the vodka aunt in your group of friends? why?
@brigadepuppy is probably the wine mom, and @klskipper13 is the vodka aunt who doesnt really drink but has a bottle thats filled with water so people wont nag her to drink with them.
60: do you like poetry? what are some of your faves?
Robert Frost is my main bitch. His path diverging in a yellow wood will always be my fave. tho in english class we once read this poem about a lady who kept one of her lovers locked away in a hidden room and continued to sleep by the body even after the person died... to this day i cant find it anywhere. had something to do with roses. creepy as fuck but great.

Oh! I really like colorful leaves and vines instead of flowers.
68: what's winter like where you live?
A mythic bitch. #upperleft
70: have you ever used a ouija board?
Fuck to the no. I like not being haunted thank you. Tho, I am 100% convinced a ghost named Tina haunts me. I’ve had flickering lights, random bangs, and things falling off shelfs happen every once in awhile. I’m surprisingly calm about it mostly.
72: are you a person who needs to note everything down or else you'll forget it?
Absolutely. Helps keep my mind clear too. If i write it down it’s not swirling around in my brain and distracting me. Once its tangible its easy to toss aside.
74: describe a good friend of yours without using their name or gendered pronouns.
I have only two friends
Friend 1: My lil Asian
Friend 2: Lil Bitch

I’m a fanclub! I have a lot of love for people I’ve never met

Way to long... uh probably last summer with a friends dog! Of course! Being outside is always cathartic
100: if you were presented with two buttons, one that allows you to go 5 years into the past, the other 5 years into the future, which one would you press? why?
I’d go into the past! I’d miss so much if I were to skip ahead that I’d feel anxious I think.
Here you all go, XD thanks Tay, I appreciate you booboo

@deathcmen sent: ‘ are you afraid to die? ’ 👀
I imagine death so much it feels more like a memory. “I used to be afraid to die...” She began, spinning her wedding ring around her finger. “When you’re younger and you haven’t experienced it but you hear about it." When's it gonna get me? In my sleep, seven feet ahead of me? "But after you experience loss," her biological parents, "after loss," Hannah, "after loss," both of her siblings, "I guess there isn't much to be afraid of anymore. If I see it coming do I run or do I let it be?
Is it like a beat without a melody? "I love my family, but if death came for me... I don't think I'd stop it." See I never thought I'd live past twenty.

Two Sons Restored their Late Father’s 1972 Cutlass in his Honor.
This Radiant Green ‘72 Cutlass was originally ordered by a father and is now owned by his sons, and serves as their tribute to him.
Look up the word “Cutlass” in a dictionary and you’ll find it defined as a short curved sword most commonly associated with sailors or pirates. Some of the earliest examples are quite elaborate, which adds desirability amongst antique collectors. And those with some sort of historical significance, whether tied to a person or an event, are even more coveted.
Before you is a different type of Cutlass—one made by Oldsmobile. While it certainly isn’t a weapon, some consider its appearance lethal. Although it was produced in 1972 and may not be an antique in the traditional sense, its value to owners Ben and Dustin Allemann is far more than money could ever buy. You see, their Cutlass is a family heirloom. It wasn’t passed down from one generation to the next in as common a method as you might first assume, however. Here’s the scoop.
Rodger Allemann grew up in a rural area near Wayne, Nebraska, and he moved to that city after graduating trade school to become a diesel mechanic. One summer day in 1972, he walked into Coryell Chevrolet-Oldsmobile in Wayne and on the showroom floor sat a 1972 Cutlass S in code-36 Radiant Green exterior complemented by a white vinyl top and black and white interior. It had been ordered by the dealership’s sales manager, Ed Carroll as a stock order.
The Cutlass was equipped with an L32 350-ci small-block V-8 with 2-barrel carburetor and a column-shifted TH350 automatic transmission. It boasted a host of typical convenience options such as power steering and brakes, air conditioning, and AM radio. Attractive, sporty, and comfortable, Rodger fell in love with the vibrant Olds and purchased it on June 16, 1972.
It seemed that Rodger and his new Cutlass were inseparable. He added a set of E-T Slotted Mag cast-aluminum wheels and HiJackers air shocks out back in the months that followed. A certain young lady took notice of Rodger as he drove his flashy Olds around Wayne and the neighboring countryside. Remember Ed Carroll, the dealership sales manager that ordered the Oldsmobile? Well, the young lady wanting to know about Rodger was Ed’s daughter, Deb.
“She orchestrated a ‘random’ run-in with Rodger,” explained Ben. “The plan involved boating, a summer party, and meeting at Gavin’s Point Dam in South Dakota, and it worked!”
The Oldsmobile played a continuous role in Rodger and Deb’s courtship. “A first kiss, a questionable joke from their friends about wedding night beer cans strung from the rear bumper after their first date, and return trips to Gavin’s Point Dam pulling the boat all involved the Cutlass S,” Ben added.
Rodger and Deb married on Valentine’s Day 1976. The couple drove away from their reception in the Cutlass and honeymooned in Estes Park, Colorado in that car. In 1977, Ed Carroll helped his daughter and new son-in-law replace the Cutlass with a new Monte Carlo. Wayne resident, Kirk Sommerfeld knew of the Cutlass and purchased it as his new daily driver.
To the couple, sons Dustin and Ben were born. Sadly, the young father passed away in 1987 at just 34 years old. Dustin was six years of age, and Ben was only one. The Allemann family kept Rodger’s spirit alive and many of the stories that Dustin and Ben heard about their father involved the Cutlass. “Kirk worked at a place near our house so we saw him driving it nearly every day” said Ben. “We knew it was our dad’s old car so we would stop by every so often and ask if we could sit in it.” Those experiences only fueled their interest to someday buy it back.
Knowing what owning Rodger’s Cutlass would mean to their boys, Deb kept in regular contact with Kirk. In 1999, their dream came true. “My mom made Kirk an offer and she was able to buy it back for $2,000. That was a risky move for a single mother with two boys, but she did it for us. The car was very complete, but was in need of a restoration after having been a daily driver for 28 years,” says Ben.
The Cutlass immediately went to a local body shop where its rusty panels were replaced and a basic coat of Radiant Green was applied just so the boys could drive it. Deb funded the project for her boys by working many overtime hours. Dustin and Ben worked part-time jobs to contribute, too. “Dave and Myrna Tuttle were my mom’s friends. We didn’t have a lot of money growing up and Dave always invited us to his home shop and helped us keep the car running,” says Ben.
By the mid-2000s the Cutlass had amassed more than 140,000 miles and was fast becoming mechanically unreliable. “Dustin was working out of state and I was just entering college,” explained Ben, “so we placed the car into storage in 2005, and it sat until 2015 when the storage facility was sold. It was then that we decided to begin a complete restoration.”
Mike Brudigam and Ryan Heiser of Tom’s Body and Paint Shop in Wayne handled the body and paint work. “The body was completely disassembled, media blasted, and placed onto a rotisserie where the entire floor pan was replaced along with the front fenders and hood. Bryan and Sam Park, and Tom, Dan and Doug Rose of Tom’s Body and Paint Shop assisted on the project as well as Dean Carroll.
Evercoat exterior refinishing products were used exclusively. Edge DTM high-build primer was applied first, and that was followed by three-coats of ChromaPremier Pro primer. Three coats of ChromaPremier Pro base in Radiant Green then went down and it was complemented by five coats of ChromaPremier Pro clear. The topcoat was wet sanded using papers with grit ranging from 400 to 5,000 before final polishing.
Ben decided to create a high-end interior that was relatively indistinguishable from the Cutlass’ original. He turned to Garek Bebee of Rezurrected Rod and Kustom in Wayne to create a customized interior inspired by the original white and black combination. Bebee fashioned a white Ultraleather seat cover that mimicked the bench seat’s original. Randal Weber Custom Woodworking of Bennett, Nebraska created the genuine crosscut walnut inserts to replace the faux woodgrain stickers on the instrument panel and door panels.
The original Oldsmobile stereo case was restored by S&M Electro-Tech in Blaine, Minnesota. It was upgraded internally with Bluetooth capability for modern sound. JBL Amp 6 x 9-inch speakers are located within the package tray and Rockford Fosgate speakers are mounted in the front kick panels. Classic Instruments in Boyne City, Michigan custom created factory-looking oil pressure and temperature gauges that are hidden within the ashtray compartment.
Corey Schlegelmilch of Donrich Machine and Driveline in Exeter, Nebraska took on the task of rebuilding the engine. The original 350 ci block was bored 0.030-inch oversize, and its cylinders were filled with forged Speed Pro pistons. The main and rod journals of the original cast-Nodular iron crankshaft were undersized by 0.010-inch each and ride on Clevite bushings. The original connecting rods were treated to ARP fasteners and resized accordingly. A stock-replacement Melling oil pump resides in a Milodon oil pan.
Erson supplied a custom-spec hydraulic roller camshaft that features 226/234 degrees of duration and 0.544-inch valve lift with Comp Cams’ 1.6:1 ratio roller rocker arms, an LSA of 110 degrees, an intake centerline at 106 degrees, and a 4/7 swap. Erson hydraulic roller lifters and Smith Brothers heavy-wall push rods in 8.1-inch length transfer lobe action to a set of Edelbrock Performer RPM cylinders heads. Donrich Machine mildly ported the aluminum castings and gasket-matched the intake ports with those of the Edelbrock RPM intake manifold. New Comp Cams valve springs were combined with the 2.072/1.68-inch Ferrea valves that Edelbrock supplied. The compression ratio measures 9.6:1.
Steve Schappaugh of Musclecar Memories Restorations in Lincoln, Nebraska was enlisted to complete the mechanical and chassis portion of the restoration, as well as final assembly, where technician Brendan Nielsen led the project. “The original frame was cracked, so we found a factory boxed frame from a ’69 Cutlass convertible to replace it with,” said Ben. “Musclecar Memories Restorations contacted the product development team at Speedway Motors in Lincoln, who used the replacement frame as their prototype to create an autocross chassis package with.”
The team at Musclecar Memories Restorations also installed a Holley Terminator fuel-injection system onto the small-block Olds. It’s fed by an Aeromotive Phantom Stealth 340 fuel pump assembly that’s tucked away in the original fuel tank. Aeromotive also supplied the fuel lines, fittings, and pressure regulator. A GMB water pump, BECOOL aluminum radiator, and dual electric fans maintain coolant temperature. An MSD Pro-Billet distributor, 6AL box and 8.5mm Super Conductor wires handle ignition duty. The MSD box and Holley fuel injection control module are hidden within inside the dash panel.
“When people hear the story of our car, they tend to focus on my father, which is very important,” Ben explained, “but what actually made this possible was a single mother who worked three jobs for 20 years to provide for her two boys so that they could own a piece of their family’s history. Without that, it wouldn’t have happened.”
The Cutlass was finished in 2016. All the while, Dustin and Ben had kept its completion from their mother. Assisted by Deb’s husband, Dennis Dannelly, they surprised her at The Last Fling ‘Til Spring car show in West Point Nebraska that fall. Ben stated, “We told her that Steve and his team at Musclecar Memories Restorations were unveiling another recent restoration, but it turned out that they unveiled the Cutlass. She was known for being quiet the prankster, so it was good that we were able to pull one over on her, but she was really emotional, and we were too.”
What Ben says he likes best about the Cutlass is its unique, one-year-only color. “Nobody can believe that it’s a stock GM color from ’72. We built it to drive hard, and do so as often as possible. We spend a lot of time on the interstate and cruising the backroads of Nebraska. We hope to autocross it soon, too.”
Having little opportunity to know their father outside of childhood, the Cutlass has become a family heirloom that gives Dustin and Ben a solid connection to Rodger. “We tried to restore it in a way that resembles the past but performs to modern expectations. We invested a significant amount of time and money getting it to this level, but it didn’t matter to us because the car will never be sold.”
Those old enough to remember the ‘80s should recall Olds’ popular the marketing campaign that was built around the slogan “This isn’t your father’s Oldsmobile.” Well, to Dustin and Ben Allemann, it really is. And it’s certain that he couldn’t be any prouder of their accomplishment with it!
Dustin and Ben Allemann’s father had purchased this 1972 Olds Cutlass S new that June. It was an important part of his life, and the boys sought to make it part of their lives after he lost his battle with cancer. It has been completely restored and modified for added comfort and performance, and serves a tribute to him after his untimely passing.
The Cutlass S was one of several models that Oldsmobile offered on its intermediate A-body line. Restyled for the 1968 model year, the 1968-72 Cutlass profile is iconic and remains endeared to fans of the muscle car area.
The Cutlass was treated to a wide array of aftermarket sheet metal during the restoration that includes an entire floor pan, rocker panels and rear quarters. The hood and fenders were replaced with panels from a donor while the doors and deck lid remain the originals. Beyond the larger wheel and tire combination, little on the outside suggests that this is anything but a typical ’72 Cutlass.
The Cutlass was originally equipped with the two-spoke N30 Deluxe Steering Wheel. The stylish N34 Custom Sport Steering Wheel was added during the restoration. The original “Tic-Toc-Tac” in the right gauge pod. The woodgrain overlay is genuine walnut. A Hurst shifter controls gear changes within the five-speed manual transmission.
A stock interior appearance was faithfully recreated during the restoration. Several components were upgraded in the process to add a greater touch of class. The seats are covered in Ultraleather that was stitched to match the original pattern. The dash pad was also covered in black Ultraleather. The door panels contain genuine walnut inserts.
A Vintage Air unit keeps occupants cool during the humid Nebraska summers.
The original small-block Olds was completely rebuilt. Performance was increased with the addition of Edelbrock’s cast-aluminum Performer RPM cylinder heads and intake manifold. Beneath the Moon air cleaner assembly is a Holley electronic fuel injection system. Exhaust is routed through a set of ceramic-coated Heddman shorty headers, a 2.5-inch mandrel-bent exhaust system and MagnaFlow mufflers that dump ahead of the rear axle.
The Cutlass was originally equipped with the TH350 automatic transmission. A Legend Gear LGT-700 five-speed manual transmission sourced from Bowler Performance Transmission in Lawrenceville, Illinois resides in its place. It’s complemented by a QuickTime blow-proof bellhousing and 11-inch Centerforce Dual Friction clutch disc and pressure plate assembly. The stock driveshaft was modified accordingly.
The upper and lower tubular control arms, 0.875-inch front sway bar, 16:1 steering gear, and steering links were supplied by Speedway Motors. The suspension upgrades are complemented by a Tuff Stuff power steering pump and Wilwood brake components. Adjustable front-coil-over assemblies from QA1 were employed to attain the ideal ride height.
Speedway Motors supplied the rear springs, shock absorbers, and 0.875-inch rear sway bar. Wilwood four-piston brake calipers handle stopping duty. A 3.73:1 gear set from Yukon Gear resides in the Cutlass’ original rear axle. A reproduction W27 cover increases capacity and heat dissipation.
Schott Wheels in Garden Grove, California created a custom set of Oldsmobile’s Super Stock I wheel in 18 x 10-inch. The billet-aluminum rims are complemented by Nitto G2 tires in 275/40R18 (front) and 295/40R18 (rear).
The Cutlass’ ornamental hood louvers were a signature feature that were removed and restored during the project.

Roman Caprices
I A strange thing happened to me on the way to the forum today: a man insulted me, saying that my throat was a sepulchre; that I had sown deceit; and that the poison of asps was under my lips. *** It is too much to begin with philosophy, the province of the wise; and I will admit,– and to you alone,– that I am hardly wise and any man that would pretend himself otherwise is not to be trusted. Most things today are hardly worthy of trust; especially the promises of youth: what was assured to me in days long past and strength long fled;– the world I once was heir to,– and that life,– is now overgrown: I see old women, snipping with gnarled scissors at braided twine; old men, sipping at sweet white wine made for sweeter days;– “Go home, senex!” I have called to them, “you are inebriated!”– old lives travelling numbly towards their final terminus; old loves won;– but more often lost, for reasons unknown, as men know not why the gods would ever favour one over another. II I know not why I sit here, recounting to you an unremarkable life, my life and the spectres of days that flit across my mind. I know not why you sit here, listening patiently to my rambling. *** I daily suffer slights,– far too often at the hands of the low,– and my friend,– wolfish; slavering; rather crude;– from time to time offers me the token gift of reassuring words: the generosity of a transalpine prince! Cisalpine, he oft reminds me, as we go to watch the gladiators strike each other down in the pit. “I’d have stuck you easily if we were down there,” he said, laughing when he drew from me no reply. Were it a naumachia, a sea-battle, I would have cast him into the waves in a Sicilian gesture; or placed my foot o’er his neck, my sword upon his neck, and given the spectators an offer that they could not refuse. I would have watched the crowds give him two thumbs down. III I am too bitter, perhaps; but he oft heaps indignities onto my head: he knows too well that I can do nothing to him; knows that I am too old, and my wrath is much like that of a toothless hound. *** Wandering the market, I observed, with scarce amusement the spectacle of a strange man who seemed to live in a clay wine-vat, hurling insult onto all who passed him, especially those who hurried as though in shame, with uneven gait on uneven cobbles, as though they each had taken a pilum to the knee! The fierce look on his masterful age-worn face reminded me of the malformed pearl I pawned away three decades past in mythical Sinae,– ah! my heart grows warm with the thought of it,– I found again whilst travelling through sunny Lusitania,– or was it vacant Germania’s dreary marches?– not two weeks ago! IV “Pearl ex India Orientali. Taken from robe of half-demon prince who rules with iron rod from pleasure dome of cloud. Good price I give you, special for you. xxx denarii.” *** Laughing for some reason,– I still know not why,– I paid my younger self what was owed him: a debt of thirty years in coins, of silver and of bronze, and in years, of my life’s last and iron age;– but not all of them, for a man must keep some regret with him to seem truly learned,– as for the pearl, I had it sent off for safe keeping only just yesterday;– as the brutish genius who came to Rome some eighty,– no,– ninety years ago had said: ‘long standing increases all things regardless of quality’. V Had he been a poet less profound, he might have added: ‘…in certain cases, that increase is purely on the horizontal’. Poets,– even the least of them,– may say such things with impunity. *** But how wonderful it is that the whole world lives under the auspices of a single crown, a single coinage, a single law, and a single mother tongue! To this lady from Lesbos, I say, “Away with you!” and she is away; to the clean-shaven Lutetian, I call, “Come!” and he gestures at me energetically with a hand that answers something altogether too vulgar to transcribe;– and to this some say that we must make provision for barbarisms and riddles: this is why nice things cannot be had. A pearl to Crates, I suppose. VI I will sprinkle my scripts liberally with ‘v’s for such is the Roman manner; and don’t you tell me to dispense with it! Or would you prefer to have the barbarians tri[v]mph? *** Not, triumph, perhaps, but corr[v]pt; but to that, I have an answer: we must to bring them into the fold; make them Roman and Romans and citizens, so that they may breed some continuation of our ways and become, with time and custom, stern outposts of dominion secure; we must them corrupt and in doing subvert those who would make us no longer us!– such were the words of the orator in the forum, extolling proud distensions of empire; expounding upon the greatest truth I know: all the world is Caesar’s for he runs it best! VII Now there’s a thought that warms one in this long season of melancholic bile-black winter;– and it hardly helps that I’m not suited for the cold; not this kind of cold, at least. *** Lately too, I’ve been kept awake at night; outside my window, when the hour is late and the moon waxes gibbous to the stupid gibbering of the drunkards,- you know who you are,– raising bastard-wine and high heaven or whatever it is they worship to the scurrilous whores of the barbican who bark obscenities between rough patches and wet sounds,– O! O! O! O Iove!– outside my window, keeping me awake;– and keeping my neighbour awake, I’m sure,– and I’m sure I’d appreciate these moonlit Boreal nights the better if Maximus [Imp.] Potentius would shut up! VIII I can see the dark forest outside my window, dark outside my window,– but there is something there that unsettles me: I can see a distant light shining far and far away. *** There flames what seems a very extraordinary light from across the marches in the east;– across the marches new that lie beside the old by barbarous tribes of ancient malcontent; the seeds of what we call today civilization may germinate into the crimson flowers of blazing war; supplanting Roman honour and Roman civility and Roman rule with impoverished and mistaken facsimiles; conflating wealth and stupid material things with nobility and erudition and meaningful discourse;– that I could think I saw a strange eidolon slouching towards Rome from out the burning tracts of empty sands and hungry forests of nameless vast Teutonic lands. IX It is of no consequence; and several days later I rode out to the castrum by the border inferior on an errand. Arriving at my destination, I delivered a missive to an aide. *** “Thank you,” said he, “but our praetor is in another castrum. Will you stay the night or will you go directly?” With veneer of cold rebuke and lips of marble, that like a shattered monument half-sunk condemns the works of passing days with glory lost, I declined reply. Around, a number looked on me an interloper from a hostile home; some had choice words;– I merely gave them a Lutetian gesture and remounted, turning my steed towards the gate,– urging my steed down the endless road leads me far from home, for all roads lead from Rome. X
Who amongst us is a wise man, or a man of many seasons? Who amongst us has yet to prove himself a charlatan? Who amongst us is endued with knowledge unadorned?
*** One man once exclaimed that I made him laugh, that my speech seemed somehow comic, as though I were a funny prop, an object of laughter, as though I was there to somehow amuse him. Comic! Is it my manner or my speech? How am I comic? I had choice words with another thereafter. I heard this morning that that same man was executed yesterday for some petty crime. The state is the better for it. “In any equation, I rather be Piso: in dispensing sentence with a masterful hand,– for the sorrows of others are not my concern,– a dread judge heedless of care or consequence;– by blind Justice or idiot god, know that I am the law!” XI I am not Piso but merely pissed, and p. on, and p. off, I suppose. I suppose that you would like to be a Piso as well, you dog. I do wish that more people were not themselves but others. *** That woman, who we have called our mutual acquaintance, that patrician daughter of C. [or C. f. as per modern convention], has been detestably beautiful,– I’ve been told that men ought not refer to a beauty like her in so unspeakably uncouth a fashion,– regardless, it does not become her. Allow me to elaborate through an example: with one careless hand, one gesture, she discarded my gift onto the blazing hearth,– where offerings should have been placed reverently and persistently and dutifully before,– and watched it burn with a smile… canis femineus. XII Dogs need no graves, nor long for orisons to send them off; nor mind the half-baked doggerels of rough satiric pens;– well-remembrance is an idle ornament on a life well-lived. *** People have made funerals too grand, indeed too sentimental; or make too much of the show of mourning,– and it is all for show,– and hagiographies will always forget the most important details, or omit the finest things in life: what one had for breakfast; or speaking with a friend on stately matters and the weather; or mocking that stolidus of a baker for selling poor bread; or hearing one’s neighbour cursing loudly incoherent when he smashes his second amphora this week! I too have heard my neighbour say, in trite attempt at humour, that his life is difficult: “I got xcix problems,” he said. I can tell that being a cretinous asinine scumbag is not one thereof. XIII
I do not think that he has spent much time looking at the stars, watching the starlight foaming up from the endless falls of eventide that nightly bathe swift Diana’s tranquil arbour-bed. *** They will paganize my household gods, once I am gone. They will spin what gold they may from the works I leave behind, supposedly in my name. I have often told people that heavy coins have no place in an urn of brass. After all, someone, someday, will doubtless try to fish them out, and I would rather not be disturbed. An urn of white ash covered over with a grassless mound of earth is hardly splendid,– but I cannot find it in me to be unhappy at the prospect: the quiet, I am certain, will suffer me best. It is time already? Must I go?

@deathcmen sent: ‘ oh thank god you’re alive! ’
As her eyes opened, Judith was surprised to see Katy as her vision came back into focus. "Apparently you can't get rid of me that easy." She groaned, catching her breath. "Are you okay?" She asked as she pushed herself up, a hand coming to rest on the young girl's shoulder. "Are you hurt?" You could've been killed and you're still making sure everyone around you is okay. She heard the voice as she always did, and rolled her eyes before she could stop herself. "I'm fine." Oh yeah of course you are.

deathcmen:
“You’d think I’d be used to it by now.” Katy said, her voice soft as she looked down at the table. “I’ve been dealing with death for so long.. ever since I could walk, I’ve seen death.. my parents used me to try and escape it.. I was blamed for feats of people we knew… I’d find myself in strange places beside a dead body… I’m surrounded by death, you’d think I wouldn’t be as afraid of it as I am.. but it’s not the dying that scares me.. it’s what’s left.. it’s the people who would be at my funeral, trying to live without me.. that’s what scares me the most..”
“No one gets used to death,” Judith pointed out, her voice just as soft as the redhead’s as her blue eyes fixed on the spot she’d been staring at as her wedding ring still spun around her finger. “When you get used to it, that’s when you lose yourself.” She sighed. “Death has followed me my whole life too, not in the same way, but it’s always there. A looming shadow and then you have the people who stick around after they’re gone.” That part made her laugh a little, if only because at least now none of the ghosts that hung around her were actively trying to be assholes.
“I know for a fact that death isn’t always the end for some people. But you don’t have to worry about that.” Judith finally broke her gaze free of the spot she’d been fixed on, ring settled back into place as she reached out, her hand resting on Katy’s arm. “None of us are going to let anything happen to you.”
