Claude de France (1499-1524) Queen of France, duchess of Brittany, countess of Blois, first consort of King Francis I

The "good queen" Claude- today overshadowed by her husband King Francis I- was born in 1499 to Queen Anne de Bretagne and her second husband Louis XII. Bonfires signaled rejoicing throughout the realm for, with the help of Saint Claude, a viable child had been born. The princess, although not the desired son, was fashioned in her mother's pious image to become both sovereign duchess of Brittany and empress (she was engaged to the future Charles V at age two) or queen (of France, as her father, before her first birthday, had secretly declared). A decade later, her sole sibling, Renée de France, the remarkable future Protestant Duchess of Ferrara, would again owe her name to another saintly protector of women in search of a child. Thus if Queen Claude inherited Queen Anne's limp, her ability to bear relatively healthy offspring was entirely her own. Her engagement in 1506 and her marriage in 1514 consolidated the first prince of the blood's claim to the throne, but after seven debilitating pregnancies in ten years (Louise, Charlotte, François, Henri, Madeleine, Charles, Marguerite), the tired body of this honored "daughter, wife and mother" of kings collapsed at the tender age of 24.

The canonization of Francis of Paola (1519) promoted by Claude and her mother-in-law Louise de Savoie in gratitude for protection from illness and the births of namesake male heirs, betrays the inextricable intertwining of the two sides of the royal family, programmed from 1498. Claude's parents willfully empowered their female progeny; thus when King Francis I descended into Italy the first year of their respective reigns, the pageantry in Lyon depicted him entering Milan to "defend the rights of the two daughters of France." Although a princess raised to be queen, Claude learned to share her husband with other women, and her power and its public expression with strong female kin, especially Louise de Savoie, named regent in her stead, and her sister-in-law Marguerite de Navarre. Legend and neglect have imposed the image of an ever-with-child, sweet, and submissive queen. Yet this eloquent and cultivated bearer of legitimacy commanded respect and carved out a space of her own in the cities of the realm (the townspeople cast her as Justice and Wise Counsel), in her duchy of Brittany and in her Loire Valley territories, especially at the castle of Blois. Shortly after his accession, her husband flaunted his monogram "F" and his emblem, the salamander, on the spectacular new façades of the castle of Blois's "wing of Francis I"; but on the cornice and ceremonial staircase and over the fireplaces, these cohabitated with his consort's at what was in fact her regal home. Here and elsewhere, her emblems- the ermine, occasionally on a leash with the motto A ma vie (To my life), her knotted rope, her swan pierced by an arrow, and her full moon with the device Candida candidis (candid for the candid)- called attention to the queen.

A primer made for this daughter of privilege stages her with her sister Renée, as children tutored by Saint Anne and under the protection of Saint Claude, while learning to read and write; and learning came to be a feature at the heart of the queen's persona. Following her accession in 1515, Claude became mistress of the castle of Blois with its royal library, her mother's manuscripts probably among its precious volumes, to which the king, in an incident of 1516, did not have a key. Her Book of Prayers, by the "Master of Queen Claude", returns to the then commonly depicted theme of Saint Anne as educator, but its pages are uncommonly packed with illuminations in which books form an insistent leitmotiv [..] Tapestries depicting scenes from Christine de Pizan's City of Ladies, these too inherited from her mother, hung into the rooms of the castles of Amboise and/or Blois, frequented by her twelve ladies-in-waiting (including Anne Boleyn and Diane de Poitiers). The writer Anne de Graville commissioned a picture of herself offering her mistress Claude one of the works she dedicated to her, thereby providing us with a rare inside vision of the city of ladies surrounding Claude.

In a final act of independence, the queen bequeathed Brittany not to her husband but to her son, the dauphin. Rather than willfulness, though, sensitivity to the plight of her subjects had colored numerous episodes of her life. During her entry into Nantes in 1518, when the town offered her a costly heart of gold flanked with ermine, she promptly gave it back. Shortly before her death she endowed the building of a cemetary in a suburb of Blois for those who had succumbed to the plague. Such symbolic gestures, combining strength and humility, help us to comprehend why the memory of the short-lived Claude lingered on. Miracles were said to occur around her body, laid to rest in her parents' chapel of Saint Calais in 1524. Subsequently, her second son, King Henri II (of the seven siblings, only he and his sister Marguerite, future duchesse de Savoie, outlived their father) immortalized her on a monumental tomb at Saint-Denis. And in her Book of Hours, Catherine de Médicis inserted Claude's portrait near that of Eleonora of Austria, Francis I's second wife, forging an unexpected double embodiment of a powerful queenly ideal.

“New Year's Gift Roll, 1557. 

This records gifts exchanged between Queen Mary I and her Court on New Year's Day, 1 Jan 1557 (3 & 4 Philip and Mary). 

Signed by the Queen in four places at the head and foot of each side of the roll ('Marye the quene'), and once (on the recto) by Richard Wilbraham, Master of the Jewel House.

The verso contains a list of gifts presented to the Queen by members of her court, the givers being arranged in groups according to their rank and station. The gifts have a great range, headed by that from the Queen's sister, the Lady Elizabeth, 'the fore parte of a kyrtell and a peire of Sleves of cloth of Silver richly embroidered all over with Venice Silver and rayzed with silver and blake silke'.

 Other gifts include clothes, handkerchiefs, plate and glassware, jewellery, books (including a prayer book), religious objects, swans and capons, and fruit. Mrs Levyna Terling gave a small picture of the Trinity and Henry Mynkes's wife pomengranates, oranges and lemons 'and a table with the kings picture in it'.

Avis Byllyard gave small marchpains, oranges and a basket of Frennch pippins. Sir Henry Nevell gave a lute in a case covered with black silk and gold, and two little round black 'tables', one of the Emperor Charles V and King Philip, the other of the King of Boehmia and his wife. 

Sir John Mason gave 'a mappe of England stayned upon cloth of silver in a frame of wodde Having a drawing cover painted with the King and Quenes Armes And a booke of Spanishe covered with blake vellat'. 

'Sabostian', schoolmaster of St Paul's, gave 'a booke of Ditiies written'.On the recto is a corresponding list of gifts presented by the Queen, all of gilt plate, with a note of the weight of plate distributed to each, arranged in groups as on the verso.

At the foot are recorded wedding, christening and other presents made by the Queen, 8 Feb 1556-10 Feb 1557. 

Such gifts include a mitre and crozier to Cardinal Pole and a gilt salt given to a woman of Bury for healing the eye of 'Jane the foole'.

When John Nichols edited the manuscript for Illustrations of the Manners and Expenses of Antient Times in England (1797), the manuscript was in the hands of William Herrick, who as direct descendant had inherited the roll from Sir William Herrick [Heyrick] of Beaumanor, Leicestershire (bap. 1562, d. 1653), moneylender and royal official, who was principal jeweller to King James I, Queen Anna and the Prince of Wales, 1603-1625.”

They got as close they could on Thursday afternoon [8 October 2020].

In a caravan of cars and trucks, they travelled north of Northport, to a bluff overlooking both the Columbia River and the Boundary-Waneta Border Crossing that wouldn’t let them – or anyone else from the United States – cross into Canada. They came with a simple message, but one that’s central to their existence and identity. “We’re still here,” Annette Peone told the crowd of mostly tribal members.

Many of them belong  to the Confederated Tribe of the Colville Indians, and a number are  descendants of the Sinixt. That tribe’s members once moved freely across this landscape, far into what is now British Columbia, into a country that  considers them officially extinct.

It’s a declaration their presence at the border was meant to pointedly contradict. And it’s a declaration that one of their fellow tribal members, Rick Desautel – a Sinixt descendant who belongs to what’s now known as the Lakes Tribe of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Indians – objected to in a different way earlier the same day. Some 2,400 miles away,  in Ottawa, Ontario,  Mark Underhill, Desautel’s lawyer, argued a case in the Supreme Court of Canada that began 10 years ago this month [October 2020]. [...]

Those tensions had been forming since at least 1811, when the British explorer David Thompson encountered members of the band while passing through the Arrow Lakes. They mounted throughout  the 19th  century, as many of the Sinixt people who survived colonization were pushed from their homeland  south to the Colville Reservation. There, they and 11 other tribal bands were allotted 2,100 square miles of land wedged between the Columbia and Okanogan rivers to share.

When just 21 Sinixt were counted north of the border in the early 1900s, they and other area Indigenous people were granted a reserve for what the Canadian government called the Arrow Lakes Band.

After the last known member of that band died in 1956, the Canadian government declared the tribe legally extinct. But their descendants were very much alive in Washington, and remained deeply connected to the lands north of the border where their ancestors had lived .

When plans for a new road threatened the remains of those ancestors in the late 1980s, Lakes members returned to their traditional homeland and helped form a blockade to stop the project near Vallican, which is home to a number of [...] sites containing the history and legacy of Sinixt culture.

The case has already been subject to a trio of provisional verdicts, one from a trial judge in Nelson, B.C., and two from appeals to that initial ruling. All of them ruled in favor of Desautel’s argument that he was “exercising his aboriginal right to hunt in the traditional territory of his Sinixt ancestors,” as Judge Lisa Mrozinski wrote in her 2017 judgement. While Her Majesty the Queen v. Richard Lee Desautel is narrowly about whether some 3,000 people have a right to hunt in a relatively remote part of British Columbia, the implications for not only the Lakes Tribe but also other Indigenous people with historical connections to Canada could be far-reaching. [...]

The effort by the Crown – that is, the Canadian government – to continue challenging that finding to the nation’s highest court is indicative of how much is at stake.

And he noted that the Crown has been vested in appealing the case because “they have taken the view that this would be precedent setting and would set the stage for other tribes.”

In its filings to the Supreme Court, the Crown’s lawyers made just that argument, claiming that “affirming that Indigenous groups located in the US are ‘aboriginal peoples of Canada’ enjoying a constitutionally protected Aboriginal right to hunt in Canada would mean that such groups may, in principle, hold constitutionally protected Aboriginal title to Canadian soil, too.”

That means “not only site-specific rights like the right to hunt, but also rights to the land itself,” the filings state. [...]

That could mean the Canadian government will have to consult with the Lakes Tribe on hydropower and pipeline projects, for example. And it may mean even more: that they have rights to land in Canada.

Queen Philippa of Lancaster favorite Palace: Sintra National Palace

The Palace of Sintra ( Palácio Nacional de Sintra), also called Town Palace (Palácio da Vila) is located in the town of Sintra, in the Lisbon District of Portugal. It is a present-day historic house museum.

It is the best-preserved medieval royal residence in Portugal, being inhabited more or less continuously from at least the early 15th century to the late 19th century. It is a significant tourist attraction, and is part of the cultural landscape of Sintra, a designated UNESCO World Heritage site. This was one of the favorite palace that Queen Philippa of Lancaster loved to spend the summer because of the view and it was not so hot like Lisbon and other places, especially Alentejo.

It was one of two castles at what is now Sintra in the Moorish Al-Andalus era that began with the Umayyad conquest of Hispania in the 8th century. The other, now known as the Castelo dos Mouros (Castle of the Moors), located atop a high hill overlooking modern Sintra, is now a romantic ruin.

The castle now known as Sintra National Palace, located downhill from the Castelo dos Mouros, was the residence of the Islamic Moorish Taifa of Lisbon rulers of the region. The earliest mention in a source is by Arab geographer Al-Bacr. In the 12th century the village was conquered by King Afonso Henriques, who took the 'Sintra Palace' castle for his use. The blend of Gothic, Manueline, Moorish, and Mudéjar styles in the present palace is, however, mainly the result of building campaigns in the 15th and early 16th centuries.

Nothing built during Moorish rule or during the reign of the first Portuguese kings survives. The earliest surviving part of the palace is the Royal Chapel, possibly built during the reign of King Dinis in the early 14th century. The palace chapel has a tiled floor with tiles in the apse laid to resemble a carpet. The walls are painted in patterned squares that look like tiles and depict the Holy Ghost descending in the form of a dove. The wooden ceiling is decorated in geometrically patterned Moorish latticework.

Much of the palace dates from the times of King João I, who sponsored a major building campaign starting around 1415.

Most buildings around the central courtyard - called the Ala Joanina (John's Wing) - date from this campaign, including the main building of the façade with the entrance arches and the mullioned windows in Manueline and Moorish styles (called ajimezes), the conical chimneys of the kitchen that dominate the skyline of the city, and many rooms including:

The Swan Room (Sala dos Cisnes) in Manueline style, named so because of the swans painted on the ceiling. The number of painted swans, the symbol of the house of the groom, Philip the Good of Burgundy, equals to the bride's, Infanta Isabel, age – 30.

Magpie Room (Sala das Pegas); the magpies (pegas) painted on the ceiling and the frieze hold the emblem por bem (for honour) in their beaks.

Patios: the early wing of the palace features courtyards embellished with tiles and featuring Arabic style water pools.

João I's son, King Duarte, was very fond of the Palace and stayed long periods here. He left a written description of the Palace that is very valuable in understanding the development and use of the building, and confirms that much of the palace built by his father has not changed much since its construction. Another sign of the preference for this Palace is that Duarte's successor King Afonso V was born (1432) and died (1481) in the Palace. Afonso V's successor, King João II, was acclaimed King of Portugal here.

OKAY SO I’VE HAD A LOT OF ASOIAF / GOT RP BLOGS FOLLOWING ME LATELY AND I JUST HAVE TO LET YOU ALL KNOW THAT CLEMENTINE HAS SEVERAL VERSES, IN DIFFERENT ERAS AND IN DIFFERENT FACTIONS OF THE SERIES. I mostly follow book canon, as I’ve read all the books and I’ve watched all the seasons, but I am also show friendly, as well. I will be using Amandla Stenberg, Nyane Lebajoa and Indya Marie as her faceclaims. As this is A Song Of Ice And Fire / Game Of Thrones, there will naturally be explicit and mature content in a variety of different ways. She is bisexual, as in canon. There are six verses in all.

Although, they are not officially in my verses quite yet, allow me to elaborate them for you. Long post under the cut!

#1: Clementine is a skinchanger and a spearwife beyond the Wall whilst possessing greensight. She’s lived among the Free Folk all her life and was born near Hardhome. When she and the entire horde of the Free Folk are being driven south by the Others. she’s actually quite capable of defending herself even for a small girl, she’s taken out a few lone wights by herself. Clementine had faced the wrath of the likes of rangers of the Night’s Watch, slavers from the eastern cities, Hornfoots and Nightrunners, men and women of the Frozen Shore, men of the Ice-river clans who feasted on human flesh, snowbears, shadowcats and even other wargs. But worst of all the enemies she had fought were the wights, those moving corpses who only devoured the flesh of the living without a second thought. The girl had seen the likes of giants and mammoths, and she could see through the eyes of the beasts of the land and the birds in the skies, things that the girls of the south would hardly begin to imagine. Yet, at only age sixteen, she had managed to survive long enough to make it to The Wall. She wonders what the lands are like Beyond The Wall, survival is all she’s ever known. When the Free Folk are brought south of The Wall, Clementine is being taught how to read by Shireen Baratheon and the maesters at Castle Black. She has a shadowcat for a companion and can warg into it and take over its body as its host. The Free Folk both fear her and respect her, and several of the men of the Night’s Watch can say the same. Some think that she is descended from the Children of The Forest because of her golden eyes, but that is up to speculation. To put it very simply, this is her verse for any muses from the North or Beyond The Wall. I can easily see her being tangled up with Melisandre or the Boltons, perhaps she can possibly help Jeyne Poole escape Winterfell? She is age sixteen in this verse. This verse will be tagged as v; I MAY BE YOUR PRISONER BUT I AM A FREE WOMAN. ( A SONG OF ICE & FIRE / GAME OF THRONES. || THE FREE FOLK. )

#2: Clementine is a Princess of the Summer Isles. She serves Queen Margaery Tyrell as a lady in-waiting while serving as an intermediary between the Iron Throne and the Summer Isles as a princess of one of the isles and is one of their representatives so that trade between Westeros and the Summer Isles can continue further. Clementine is of Rhoynar, Summer Islander and Naathi descent. From a young age, she had been taught how to fight with a spear and shoot with her goldenheart bow and arrows that could pierce through even steel plate, as in the Summer Isles, women are considered equal to men. At age sixteen, she is well versed in many languages, the arts of love, music, song, dance and war. She leaves the Summer Isles on a swan ship to The Reach to broker a deal with the Hightowers at Oldtown at a young age while accompanied by an entourage of her own, and Alerie Hightower selected her to be one of ladies in waiting at Highgarden. Clem travels with Margaery and her relatives all throughout the events of The War of The Five Kings until they reach King’s Landing. When Margaery is betrothed to Joffrey Baratheon, Clementine is introduced in court, as well, and is seen as an exotic beauty by much of the court. She gets a lot of requests for marriage or simply sharing her bed from many lords of Westeros, including but not limited to Jhalabar Xho, Aurane Waters, Willam Wythers, Perros Blackmont and Daemon Sand, because many want the riches and treasures that the Summer Isles provide, and Clementine is an attractive young lady, something she will use to her advantage in court. ( **Note: this is what happens in my portrayal, if you portray any of these muses, this does not need to happen. )

She wears the feather capes that the Summer Islanders are known for and her loose silken diaphanous gowns from Naath, her hair is adorned with a myriad of butterflies and flowers in her hair and dressed in brilliantly colored feathers of exotic birds, silks, seashells and gemstones - rubies, sapphires, emeralds and pearls, along with the gowns and Myrish lace that Westeros provides when serving Queen Margaery Tyrell. Yet her heart always lies with her home. Afterward, she intends to venture to the Temples of Love in the isles and allow others to share her bed, as was expected of her and all other individuals on the isles, male or female, lowborn or highborn, as a way of worshiping her gods. She keeps to the gods of the Summer Isles and the Lord of Harmony of Naath and she’s been rumored to practice water magic, but this is debatable. She will protect her Queen with her life if need be.

Her fellow companions at court are Megga, Alla, Elinor and Leona Tyrell, Margaery’s cousins, Alyn Ambrose, Alysanne Bulwer, Meredyth Crane, Alyce Graceford, Taena Merryweather of Myr, Leonette Fossoway, Mira Forrester, Sara Durwell / Flowers and Septa Nysterica, a sister of the Faith. Through it all, even though she finds King’s Landing fascinating at first, she grows to yearn for her motherland… and learns that the capital is a pit of vipers. In A Feast For Crows, Clementine is accused of lewdness, fornication and high treason by The Faith and is arrested for crimes she did not commit. In a Dance With Dragons, Clementine’s currently awaiting her trial alongside the queen’s within the Sept of Baelor. To put it very simply, this verse is for King’s Landing and any shenanigans that may occur there, and it will be tagged as: v; YOU SHOULD SEE ME IN A CROWN. ( A SONG OF ICE & FIRE / GAME OF THRONES. || KING'S LANDING. )

#3:Clementine is a dragonrider, sorceress and noblewoman of the Valyrian Freehold, a daughter of the ancient House Targaryen, of the union of Aenar Targaryen and a princess from the Summer Isles. Keeping to the Gods of Old Valyria and the Deities of the Summer Isles, she finds herself praying to both deities, never truly having a preference of any of them over the other. One of the most striking things about her physical appearance are her violet eyes and her silver hair from her Valyrian ancestry, yet her skin tone is purely Summer Islander. It seems her lady mother won the genetics lottery. Clem has a good standing relationship with her half-siblings and most notably in Daenys Targaryen who would later to be known as Daenys the Dreamer renowned for foreseeing the Doom of Valyria twelve years prior to it’s fiery downfall. Clementine is dragonrider to the dragoness Zalliel. They practically grew up together from the time she was only an infant girl in her crib, as she’d been holding her egg to keep it warm. Zalliel, like her rider, had a thirst for adventure and freedom. Although not the warlike type, the dragoness would fight to the very bitter end to protect her rider. Her lord father, Aenar Targaryen, had paid a fine amount of gold for one of the best blacksmiths in the Freehold to make his youngest daughter a Valyrian steel sword, as Clementine had a intrigue for blades and the art of war, despite her calm and gentle exterior. Her lord father always knew that she had a fire burning in her heart. Clementine named this blade Dark Sister and so when she soared into the battlefield on dragonback, she would be seen fighting with it, as well as using one of her lady mother’s goldenheart bows and arrows. Clementine is a warrior through and through, and the blade has passed down to the future generations of House Targaryen, such as Queen Visenya Targaryen, Maegor Targaryen, Prince Daemon Targaryen and Lord Brynden Rivers, to which the sword is now lost to history.

Clementine was born - and grew up - within Valyria, and magic was at its height in the capital and in all the known world. At its apex Valyria was the greatest city in the known world, the center of civilization. Within its shining walls, twoscore rival houses vied for power and glory in court and council, rising and falling in an endless, subtle, oftsavage struggle for dominance. She enjoyed much of her childhood and adolescence there, loving to soar around the seemingly topless towers in the city, or spending time with her family in Lys. She kept monkeys, apes, panther cubs, and parrots from the Summer Isles as pets. She was taught in the arts of love and war, in many languages and was taught how in the magical arts by several sorcerers and mages hired by her lord father and lady mother. She is of Summer Islander, Naathi, Rhoynar and Valyrian descent, and was a member of the Young Dragons faction of Valyria. House Targaryen at the time was not considered a powerful house, compared to the forty other noble families of Valyria, but Clem cared little for court politics, but she was seen as a beauty amongst the dragonlords. In the Freehold, dragons were usually tamed with dragonhorns, sorcery and whips, but Clementine disliked the cruelty and thus attached herself to Zalliel in other ways, by way of kindness and companionship. After Daenys the Dreamer prophesied that Valyria would be destroyed, Aenar sold his holdings in the Valyrian Freehold and the Lands of the Long Summer, and moved with all his family, wives, wealth, slaves, and dragons, with House Velaryon and House Celtigar following behind them to Dragonstone, a bleak island citadel beneath the Dragonmont, a smoking mountain in the narrow sea. The Targaryens were far from the most powerful of the dragonlords, and their rivals in Valyria saw their flight as an act of cowardice. However, because Aenar had moved his family away from Valyria, the Targaryens were the only dragonlords to survive the Doom in 114 BC and the following Century of Blood. 

Clementine, however, was unhappy with the whole ordeal, feeling as if her entire future was being torn away to rot and sit at the very westernmost precipice of the Valyrian Freehold - Dragonstone, especially near a place as foreign and strange as Westeros. She helped her family with their affairs in Essos, most predominantly in the wars of the Free Cities. After staying for a few years at Dragonstone, deciding to rebel against her father and refusing to stay any longer in the bleak citadel before she withered away, took all of her things and her dragon and soared away from Dragonstone to travel the known world. What happens to her afterward is still debated by the maesters of the Citadel to this day, and her adventures vary depending on the tale. Some say she had affairs with several Westerosi lords - and even ladies, others say she eventually united the Summer Isles under her rule - something that was uncommon amongst the islanders, while alternate sources claim she was a consort of a YiTish god-emperor. What is known, however, is that she’s had many lovers - both men and women - and several adventures in her life and eventually returned to Dragonstone by way of a ship and brought Dark Sister back to the ancestral home it belonged to, and that she lived a very long and natural life. To put it very simply, this verse is for any pre-ASOIAF / GOT characters before Aegon’s Conquest. The tag for this verse is:  v; I AM THE DRAGON'S DAUGHTER. ( Note: Slavery, incest and polygamy are all a part of Valyrian culture, especially amongst the nobles. Her father had many wives and Clementine\s half siblings, as was common in Valyria, married and had children together. Incest is common among the noble families of Valyria and even then they’re often political with no romance involved and Clementine is a noblewoman, so it’s entirely possible she may have been betrothed. Slavery exists in this time period and Valyria profited off of slavery. Please keep in mind that I tolerate NONE of these things as a mun, but it is something that does happen and I will not be sugarcoating it in my portrayal, but I will always tag it when mentioned. )

#4: Clementine is a lady of Dornish, Summer Islander, Naathi and Rhoynar descent and owes her allegiance to House Martell.  Although mostly underdeveloped in comparison to the rest of her verses, Clementine was born and grew up in the Summer Isles before being sent to Dorne as an older child as a negotiation agreement for trade, and she grows fond of Dorne while staying there. Eventually, she works together with Arianne Martell, the Sand Snakes and Arianne’s entourage to crown Myrcella Baratheon as true Queen of the Seven Kingdoms by Dornish law. In A Storm of Swords, she attends Ellaria Sand and Oberyn Martell and saw the consequences of the trial by combat go horribly wrong, with the Red Viper’s death having a critical blow on the Dornish. During the later parts of the books, she stays back in Dorne and attends Doran Martell with anything he might need, all while taking care of Princess Myrcella. To put it simply, this verse is mostly for interacting with characters from Dorne and mostly southern Westeros. The tag for this verse is v; SHE WHISPERS INTO THE EARS OF MEN. #5: Clementine is a Princess of the Summer Isles, and was born and grew up in the isles. She was sent by her lord father to negotiate with the Free Cities on matters of trade... only to be kidnapped by Basilisk Isles raiders and to be sold as a slave in Meereen, first as a female fighter in the fighting pits, before being noticed by some of the Masters and being taken to the Temple of the Graces to be trained as a Red Grace - all of this against her will. When Daenerys Targaryen enters the scene, however, Clementine is one of the first women to raise the sword for the Dragon Queen. Daenerys frees her from her bondage as a slave and a Red Grace and Clementine has been loyal to her - and her entourage - since. This verse is used to interact with any muses of Slaver’s Bay or any individuals who are aligned with House Targaryen in the present time. #6: Clementine is a young lady trained to become the next Black Pearl of Braavos, one of the most proeminent courtesans of the city.  From a very young age, she was educated and trained in various cultural pursuits such as art, music, poetry, calligraphy, song, dance, history, literature and flower and fan language. She’s an educated girl of good social standing, who is oft present at festivals and entertainments, and is hired as a mourner at funerals. She, like her lady mother, enjoys high status and is famous worldwide. She, like every other courtesan, has her own barge and servants to work them, as slavery does not exist in Braavos. Her beauty has inspired many a song and she is showered with gifts from goldsmiths and craftsmen beg for her custom. Nobility and rich merchants pay her large amounts of money to appear alongside them at events, merchant princes pay royal ransom to have her on their arms at balls, feasts and mummer shows and bravos are known to kill each other in her name.

She is famous, respected and wealthy and enjoy a kind of celebrity status as well as a certain kind of mystique, and she is cultured and beautiful. She sleeps on rose petals and wears silken skirts that rustle when she walks, and great lords beggar themselves for her maiden’s blood. She can trace her descent through the female line to the daughter of Bellegere Otherys, a pirate queen who was the first Black Pearl, and King Aegon IV Targaryen, and thus the earlier generations of the Targaryen Dynasty as a whole, as well as having other bloodlines such as having royal descent of both a Princess of the Summer Isles and a Sealord of Braavos. She dresses in charcoal grey, purple, blues so dark that are almost black, and blacks as dark as moonlight. Clementine is age sixteen and is still in the process of following her mother’s footsteps. This verse is used for muses of Western Essos, moreso the Free Cities and particularly Braavos, but Clementine can easily travel elsewhere. This verse is tagged as v; THE BLACK PEARL. End of Year Wrap-Up 24/12/2018

Happy Merry to all you readers!

I’ve had a great year but all us music fans have had an even better one! Streaming services mean that now more than ever we can experience the musical output from all corners of the globe (though overwhelmingly the English-speaking parts of it) to understand different points of view, learn of the goings on in other parts of the world and most importantly indulge ourselves in a bit of a boogie. All the moods, genres and feels you could think of are out there, so over the holiday period perhaps try and listen to something new. Who knows it might break the tension with that younger/older relative round the xmas table when you find they also happen to like k-pop/jazz-funk/grindcore or at the very least you can bicker about the tragedy of the current album charts (Greatest Showman: 21 weeks!). — Rejoice, little lambs! We have recovered our own Son Mina, spotted prancing about in the Southeast Side. I remember seeing her with The Bling Ring back in high school, but I’m not here to spill yesterday’s tea. So straight to the rundown: can you say frivolous and manipulative? Apparently now she spends time as fashion blogger and freelance stylist, and keeps skeletons buried at Prestige Hotel, 401. But those won’t stay hidden for long, if you and I have any say on it. Welcome back, Black Swan; we missed you so.

In case you don’t remember the devil’s name, here’s to refresh your memory:

Transferred to Cheongnam in the middle of the first semester in 2009, Mina instantly took the school by storm with her lethal beauty and allure. As someone who had a posh upbringing in London, Mina appeared to be more mature and experienced to her fellow classmates. And experienced she was. At sixteen, when boys and girls were still discovering adolescence, she had already seen or done things beyond.

Blunt, ruthless, manipulative. She never held back, spewing poisonous words and casting ice cold gazes to anyone who crosses her path, made them cower in intimidation and fear. They thought she was just another rich spoiled brat who found pleasure in disparaging people, entitled and never accountable. Your typical high school queen bitch, right? Oh, no, she was worse than that, they realized. She was a living personification of Eris, the goddess of chaos. The clique she established was a nightmare for everyone. Girls lived in fear that one of these tramps would snatch their boyfriends; boys had to watch out if they were losing more than just a kiss.

She was almost invincible. Nothing could break her, after all, she was already broken. Not a single tear was seen from her when they all turned on her. No, she was ballistic and mostly disappointed at herself at herself for believing they could be trusted, for believing the shallow connection they had was friendship.

Like a hurricane, she came and went in a fury haste. No one had seen or heard from her after that. But they would always remember the catastrophe that was Son Mina.

Nevermind the memory lane though, the present is always the ripest fruit:

Now known as an influential blogger and the most sought-after fashion stylist, Mina’s lavish lifestyle and impeccable sartorial sense were subjects of envy to many. Floating in fashionable galas and runway shows in Gucci mink coat and Manolo Blahnik heels, or dressing models on sets in exotic destinations, the woman really seemed to have shed her daredevil ways. What doesn’t change is that she’s as candid and frivolous as ever, and of course, her love for all things opulent and decadent.

No one thinks the flighty female is willing to be tied down soon, but if Mina is known for one thing, then it’s her unpredictability. She claims to have met the man who she wants to spend the rest of her life with. To the shock of everyone, not only is the man old enough for her to called him “Daddy”, he is her former friend’s father. Is it really true love, or is she in it for his money? Everyone can’t stop gossiping about it.

They seem to forget that there’s one thing Mina loves the most ( and to be frank, money isn’t something she lacks)—power. She thrives on the power to manipulate people and it pleases her to see them bow down to her. She certainly hasn’t forgotten those little traitors from years ago. The bitch is back, with intention to put the saying “revenge is a dish best served cold” to practice.

But we are nothing if not open books – my job is to ensure you get to the best pages:

i. they told me, “one day you are going to become a star.

”Born Mina Isabelle Son in London to a handsome and gregarious South Korean ambassador and a glamorous socialite of extraordinary beginning, Mina is destined to lead a sparkling life. Her parents, although distant and aloof to each other, shower the pretty little girl with affection and lavish things. They want her to have the greatest of everything, so after they take her to watch The Nutcracker at the Royal Opera House and she earnestly begs them to let her learn ballet, they immediately find the best dance school for her. She would never forget the first time those pink satin ballet shoes wrap around her tiny feet, it’s as if she is born to wear them, she never wants to take them off. Talented and strives to master the art of ballet, Mina is accepted into the Royal Ballet School at the tender age of ten. What she thinks it’s the beginning of a fairytale dream is actually the prelude to a nightmare.

ii. and i tell them, i’m already a star.

It’s a bloodbath to see who will one day claim the throne of prima ballerina. Her best friend, or so she thought, who is bitter about constantly being overshadowed by Mina, spreads a false rumor that Mina and an instructor has an inappropriate relationship, leading Mina to be ostracized. Mina never told her parents about what happened at school since they already had enough on their own plates. After fifteen years of keeping a loveless marriage, both decide they want to go on separate ways. Depression loomed over the delicate swan princess, leading her to descend into darkness.

iii. i’m made of tragedy.

Numbing herself with alcohol and narcotics, spending nights in different boy’s arms because their sweet nothings and kisses make her feel alive, worshipped and desired. Though none compared to him, the tall dark and handsome boy who waltzes into her life and steals her heart with ease. He is so wise, so worldly, so mysterious. She loves the thrills, being with him and all the escapades. Mina would never admit it out loud but the misbehavior is simply a cry for attention. After her mother leaves, her father becomes an absent figure, burying himself in works. One morning, he knocks on Mina’s door, finds a boy in his daughter’s room and bags of pills on her bed. Quickly putting the puzzle pieces together, he tells Mina to pack up, she is going to live with her mother in Seoul.

iv. i bleed gold.

It’s no different here. Her mother is rarely home, always out and about with other socialites, and when she does, Mina always finds a man she has never seen before joining them for breakfast. It doesn’t bother her as it should, she has found a little family with two like-minded souls anyway. The Bling Ring. She and her entourage traffic in terror and intimidation at school, stealing kisses from boys along with their mothers’ diamonds and girlfriends’ Birkin bags. Everyone knows not to cross this coven of bitches.

v. and i only shine in darkness.

She shouldn’t have believed that such thing as friendship really existed because once again, they betrayed her, leaving her to bear the brunt. Expelled and exiled to Switzerland, Mina spent the latter part of teenage years quietly in a boarding school. Fast forward five years, she is now a household name in the blogosphere, jet-setting between Milan, London, and Seoul. It seems like the raven-haired beauty has put the past behind her, but wreaking havoc is in this vixen’s blue blood. You know what they say about old habits, they die hard.

Hooray! Hooray! It’s a holi holiday! There’s a place I know where we should go, hey di hey di hoh,. ….. There’s a brook nearby, the grass grows high, hey di hey di hoh,. …. Sing a summer song skip along, holi holiday!

Well, Boney M is singing in my head as Sunday dawns. We decide to have an early lunch and visit Lake Burley Griffin in the centre of the city.

It is a picturesque place, named after Walter Burley Griffin, the architect who designed Canberra city. Every shore of the lake has some great sites to visit. We are at the side near the Parliament House, called Commonwealth Place. Here an array of poles display the flags of all the 52 Commonwealth countries on special occasions. Today only the Australian flag is fluttering in the centre of a flat concrete square that lies between two grassy slopes.

The lake is dotted with a couple of sailboats and two rental motor boats with joyriders on them. A trio of beautiful black swans elegantly swim by, their bright red bills glistening in the sunlight. As the kids sprint off on the cycling track that circles the lake, a white gull perches itself a little away from where I am sitting, and calls out to its friends in the water. Then suddenly it raises one foot up and tucks it in its feathers, standing on one leg for almost two minutes. As I scramble to take picture, there’s a quick bob of the head, and I see it chewing on something. Then down comes the leg.

Meanwhile a veritable flock of gulls descends here and after pecking around some time, they all take off over the lake in synchronised splendor. We are spellbound by the beauty around us. We get spectacular views of the National Carrillion (Bell tower) on one side, the Regatta Place on the other, with the Black Mountain in the centre.

Incidentally, Walter Burley Griffin has a major connection with India. Not only has he designed the library at University of Lucknow, but also more than 40 buildings including the University of Lucknow Student Union building; a museum and library for the Raja of Mahmudabad; a zenana (women’s quarters) for the Raja of Jahangirabad; Pioneer Press building, municipal offices, many private houses, and a memorial to King George V. Sadly, he died in Lucknow and is buried in the Christian Cemetery there.

So in a strange twist of fate, he lies buried in the capital of the state I come from, while I am living in the capital he designed! As I reflect on this, Akshobhya enjoys himself running at the birds and causing them to fly off in a group. And Saakhi runs up and down the grassy slopes with glee.

Abhishek and I enjoy the view and the ambience a lot, but the kids are now restive and wish to ‘do something’! So we reluctantly depart and go to Glebe Park in the city’s centre.

The first thing that hits me at the park is that despite being in the city’s centre, we cannot hear any sounds of traffic here. The park is lush green, with beautiful manicured plants with vivid colours of leaves and flowers. On one side is a play area for kids with swings, slide, see saws and other such stuff.

While the kids have a gala time on the playthings, I look at some of the sculptures here. There’s a statue of the Queen of Snakes in Lithuanian mythology donatd by the Lithuanian embassy; a White Stone obelisk with the words “ On Namah Bhagavate Vasudevaya”, donated by the Vedanta Society’s Australia chapter; a pagoda style gazebo; and a statue of Mahatma Gandhi unveiled by the Australian Governor General in 1989.

I marvel at this confluence of culture amid nature, as we call it a day.

Christmas Day brings rain and chilly winds and we spend it at home catching up with chores. Our neighborhood is lit up with colourful twinkling lights as everyone has decorated their homes for Christmas. It is a beautiful sight as we take a walk in the evening.

The previous day’s relaxation means that the kids want an outing again. So after breakfast, we decide to spend the Boxing day holiday at Lake Tuggeranong. The foreshore of the lake is parkland, where swimming, fishing, canoeing etc is possible.

The play area is every kid’s dream, with not just swings and slide, but a mini obstacle course. Saakhi and Sabad have a really good time trying everything out. Akshobhya especially loves the mini sand excavator, and works its handles up and down gleefully digging up and scattering the sand. Saakhi has taken a fancy for the obstacles and does 3-4 rounds before we break for lunch.

Post Lunch, we walk along the Lake, upto a little beach on its shores, A profusion of birds greets us. Three kingfishers perch in a line on three pillars in the water, waiting for prey; while two peewees peck at some crumbs near a bench. A bunch of Chennata Jubata or Australian Wood Ducks are enjoying a leisurely swim in the lake waters. A few white gulls seem to be playing a repetitive game of fly and land, fly and land.

Saakhi decides to feed the ducks and scatters some crumbs of her cookie on the sand. The ducks don’t leave the water, but a horde of jet black Eurasian Coots emerge from behind the reeds and make for the food. Frantically scattering the rest of the crumbs, Saakhi makes a run for it as the birds literally pursue her for food!!

As we make our way back through the park, a flash of red and blue crosses my path. Turning around to look, I see a a couple of brilliant blue and black birds eating some fries that a kid dropped neat a tree. The cosy twosome are Purple Swamphens, and the only bird I’ve seen that uses its foot for eating! Yes, it actually picks up food in its beak and then lifts its right leg and smartly wedges the food between the talons. Then it takes bites off the food while 'holding’ it. I am stunned, and quickly make a video recording of this.

It’s evening now, and the little one is tired, so I cut short my bird spotting and we drive home. While the kids nod off in exhaustion, Abhishek and I discuss the immense natural beauty we’ve enjoyed and how well kept the park is; and wonder with sadness and regret why so many such water bodies with great tourism potential lie under-developed or badly maintained in our country.
