The Origins, Ramsay Fiction & The Confusing Mishmash of Everything Before Fix Me - A Marianas Trench Retrospective

Okay, so my post got likes, but I only got one actual response from anyone, agreeing with me on the fact they like things in chronological order. So, I guess it's time to talk about the bands early days, eh?

The truth of the matter is, the band as many know them started in late 2003 and early 2004. Anything before that gets placed in this weird murky middle section with a name change, members leaving, and also a complete and utter mess of when Ramsay Fiction came to an end and where Marianas Trench begins. We have located a demo disk from 2001 with the Marianas name on it, but we also don't have any dates as to when certain things were recorded or uploaded onto MP3.com.

Here's what we do know: Josh Ramsay, a teenager dealing with both an addiction to heroin and an eating disorder, loved music from a young age. His father owned a recording studio, and his mother was a vocal coach. Music was literally in his blood, but even though the two had connections into the industry and everything, he set out to make it into the business on his own. And he knew one thing for certain: He DID NOT want to be a solo act, he wanted to be in a band.

The issue for Josh was getting that band together. At first, it was him and his sister Sara (backup vocals), her then boyfriend and later husband Trevor Spilchen (on bass, even though he was a guitar player), Josh's friend Steve Marshall (on guitar and backup vocals, despite being a BASSIST), and a rotating list of drummers, eventually finding Ian Casselman in a series of classifieds in a newspaper late into the bands life. This lineup didn't last long, as once Sara became pregnant with her and Trevor's first kid, they stepped aside... leading to 2 new members joining: Josh's friend Matt Webb (originally a keyboardist), and Steve's pal Morgan Hempstead (the man who bestowed them the Marianas Trench name). It's tough to say who plays what on a lot of the Ramsay Fiction tracks that make up Cooler Than Me, as I think they come from two different recording sessions, if not more. Same goes for a lot of the self-titled EP work too, as we know at least two tracks from that era, an early recording of Fix Me, and a early recording of Skin & Bones, were both first made public to people in 2004... months after Steve and Morgan left, and Mike Ayley joined the group after getting to know everyone as Ian's roommate.

In fact, for the longest time, a lot of the Ramsay Fiction stuff was lost media, songs that nobody outside of a rare few had ever heard. As of April 1st this year, this is no longer the case, and all the songs have been found and preserved (yes, even PMS... despite it being taken off Youtube, has been saved.)

To talk about these songs is hard. There's definitely a lot of emotion and pain in these tracks, and the overall sound is very 90's, going for more of heavy grunge and alternate rock sound, very reminiscent of Matthew Goode. But you can also hear those other elements creep in from other acts Josh has referenced time and time throughout in small snippets. The biggest thing holding a lot of these songs back is a mix of production (which is still insanely impressive for the time period and the fact it was done by a teen no less), and lyrical ckunkiness, making them semi hard to decipher.

What do I mean by this? Take track 1, the one everyone knows: Primetime. The song's verses speak about how something is this, but the person is the opposite... bu we don't get a clear picture of who the person is.. only that supposedly a hit of heroin will make everything feel better. It's odd that this is the song that's somehow lasted the test of time out of all these tracks. But hey, it did lead to a great callback on End of An Era.

Track 2, Shiny Like Dirt (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bG-OoIsFbow), is truly a song where Josh took a ton of ideas he had for songs, and threw it against the wall to see if it would stick. And... it does stick, but also doesn't? The chorus is super catchy, basically admitting he's a confusing person, and that nothing he does makes sense... and yet, despite it all, he still has fears of the unknown. The "coming up for air" bridge is probably my favourite part, but it's definitely an earworm I return to occasionally. I've also linked it in case you've yet to hear it.

Track 3: Shallow. The song we've known about for the longest time, the one the fandom cherished like a baby... and honestly, it's probably my least favourite? I've tried to decipher the lyrics on this one for ages, but I can't come up with anything concrete. I do think the song has a good tone, and the guitar solo is totally awesome. In fact, there's a lot of great guitar and bass work throughout a lot of these songs. But there's something missing for me on this one.

Track 4: Playing Dead. This seems to be the earliest recorded song of this bunch, going off Josh's voice here. And honestly, I think it's the closest tonally to a current day Marianas Trench song. There's a bit of a swing sound going on in the drums, the harmonies.... and it's an interesting number overall. Also, it's our clearest sampling of Steve's voice, and just how close it is to Matt's vocals xD... it seems to be a simple love song about a girl and how he's open to roleplaying almost anything with her, using "playing dead" as his main metaphor. It's the black sheep of the CD, but a good one.

Track 5: Hideous. Here we go... the first track Josh ever wrote about his bulimia and depression... and how it was eating him from the inside... and how he was asking for help, even though he wasn't fully ready to accept it at the time. The beginning parts are very slow, and methodical.... only for the song to pick up energy in it's second half and become truly one of the standouts on this album.

Track 6: PMS. Okay... so... this one is tough to talk about. We knew for years it was supposedly very comedic in nature and that it was also politically incorrect, but that was it. As for the song itself, I personally really love it. It's a song about Josh being petty to a girl and truthfully telling her off. It's definitely of its time period, but in the best way possible. And once again, the guitar work here is SO GOOD. If you can stomach a song that truly is a time capsule and understand that Josh would never write anything as juvenile today, give it a listen.

Track 7: Don't Touch Me. The song that holds a special place in my heart... as I was the one to LOCATE IT after 18 years in the massive pile of MP3.com links that were given to the Internet Archive in 2021. And it's a ballad all about Josh dealing with both the arguments and turmoil he would feel when coming down from getting high. Truthfully, this might be the most emotional song of this batch, and one that definitely sticks its landing.

So, my overall thoughts here are to give these songs a listen, and understand them for what they are: the start of a musical prodigy finding his footing and his sense of style while getting clean and hoping somebody, anybody, would give him a chance. While the tone might not have influenced Josh’s style fully going forward, there are elements from these songs that were taken and repurposed into later Trench tracks.

Luckily, and also sadly... Jonathan Simkin & Chad Kroeger gave him that chance. And thus, we got ourselves a self titled EP... and a full title debut. But that'll be next time.

I NEED to talk about how chloe or sam or sophia or marcus by taylor swift is a kevjean song, so settle in. I'm kinda running with the idea that the verses are v kevin coded and the chorus & bridge is jean. behold.

I think it's fair to say that she couldn't have been entirely blameless. what does jean think about her actions in retrospect, and her connection to kevin?

I could be kinda projecting here, but I feel like it would be easier to imagine that kevin didn't feel as deeply for him as jean did for him (cause regardless of if you view them as romantic or platonic jean felt A Whole Lot), than to think that kevin did care for him, did feel something for that scared little boy whispering french in the darkness, and left him anyway.

I have so so many feelings about this but I'll try to be coherent - jean is still haunted by kevin, by his lingering attachment to him, by how he still cannot forgive kevin for leaving him. to see kevin living a relatively normal life outside the nest, while jean still can barely function day to day largely because of the consequences he received from kevin's actions, cuts him deeply. kevin has more concerns now than jean - jean has nothing other than his trauma and kevin (at least at the beginning of trc). if jean moves on, if he lets go of the nest, if he accepts his place on the outskirts of kevin's life, would that be enough? or will he always be pulled back, wondering what could have been?

I almost never write out my song analysis and most of this was thought of at 2am so idk if it makes any sense but I had to get it out

Favorite Buddie Fics (so far!)

This has been way, waaaaaaay past overdue. The weewoo show got a hold of me last May and, for some reason, I resisted making a fic rec blog about it. I think I was kind of in disbelief that I, a serial long-term monoshipper, had adopted a second new ship in less than a year 😆 But it seems like I'm a sucker for a good Best Friends to Lovers, Found Family, Trauma Bonding vibe!!

I wanna go ahead and flesh this verse out a bit more, since I’ve had a few threads with various characters in it, between here and discord. 

My OCs, Marion, Orion, and Cyrus (Wolfe) are brothers in his verse. This is a modern human verse. While the end result is a verse that CAN be cheerful and sweet, the backstory is anything but. 

This verse info contains mentions of triggering subjects including alcoholism, abuse, sexual assault, and drug use. Threads within this verse will also contain these subjects, unless plotted otherwise. This is your warning.

Ages: Wolfe: 23, Marion: 19, Orion: 18 

Story so far: Nathaniel and Miranda Lunas married young, and for a time, things seemed great. They had a son, Cyrus, followed by Marion, followed by Orion, their youngest. Cyrus always had a bit of a jealous streak, but as long as he had his parents’ attention and affection, there was nothing to be worried about. Then came Marion, and Cyrus watched the new baby get the majority of the attention. He always figured once Marion was a bit older, things would even out. But then came Orion, and with his birth, Miranda’s health never quite recovered. She was always tired, and what energy she did have went towards caring for Orion. 

At the same time, noting the change in his wife and his household, Nathaniel started spending more time away from home, either at work (or so he claimed) or out drinking with his friends. His behavior toward his sons went from caring to negligent as Miranda’s health waned. After she passed away, he became abusive. This was mainly towards Marion and Orion, because the first time he ever took a swing at Cyrus, the 17 year old came back with a knife, leaving Nathaniel with a long scar on his arm. Cyrus moved out soon after, and Nathaniel didn’t bother asking where or with what money. A few years later, at 15, Marion followed suit, running off to the east coast to pursue a music career. His specific info is more detailed here: {{ v; City of Angels }}

Cyrus makes a living spearheading the trade of illicit substances. He got in on the business as a young teen, and now runs a small crew. He goes by Wolfe, and anyone fool enough to call him by his first name is likely to get hurt. Badly. When Marion left without warning, Wolfe convinced (not that it took much work) Nathaniel to let 14- year old Orion come and live with him, leaving their father alone to rot in their childhood home. His treatment of Orion is ghastly, as is that of the rest of Wolfe’s gang, and the years of abuse have left Orion with selective mutism. That is to say, he cannot speak. (This could change over time if his situation changes and he is able to receive therapy) 

Orion knows a decent amount of American Sign Language, being self-taught via library books and internet videos, as well as practicing daily with an old man that rides the same bus. He either communicates this way, or by writing in a notebook.

Wolfe has Orion run drugs for him, knowing that Orion would never out him for fear of the consequences, and that most cops wouldn’t look twice at Orion. Orion has lived with Wolfe for years now, and is 18, though at first glance he seems younger, due to being short for his age, and babyfaced. A closer look and you might even think he was older.

𖤐 ⤸ the beginning of mirage didn’t actually start at their debut in 2020. in fact, the group’s history dates as far back as 2013 — which is when arin began her trainee journey. along the way, many of the girls have either crossed paths or share multiple connections. regardless, looking into their overall bond as a group might make one think that all roads taken would lead right back to mirage.

PART 01 : PAIRS WITH EUNAE OR ARIN . . .

relies on nari the most out of anyone on the planet with xepher as a close second — the found family trope is a pattern in mirage, but it’s most prevalent with them

when arin wanted to practice more, nari was always the first person to volunteer in staying later with her

arin arrived at kq feeling defeated after recently not succeeding on idol school, but nari tried incredibly hard to make arin feel empowered again

2ri were often put in the same evaluation groups because staff kept mixing up their names, so regardless of their clashing personalities they had to learn to get along

when nari learned how young arin was after joining kq, she introduced her to xepher and both older girls felt like the youngest should move in with them — especially when arin finished her training fairly quickly

when eunae joined the team, the girls moved into a bigger apartment for more room because there was a time when mirage was predicted to end up as a quartet — the move led to 2ri being roommates before nako arrived

from the perspective of the oldest, nari watched arin blossom the most out of everyone

they rarely argue because of arin’s patience & nari being more of a peacemaker + empath

eunae & nako first met in late 2018. eunae’s brother was still in pentagon while nako was dating yuto — the girls were merely acquaintances, and jihun was actually closer to nako at the time

when fate was serving as both a miracle and nightmare, it put eunko in similar situations upon joining mirage & naturally led to them sticking together

eunae & nako complete each other like pieces of a puzzle — what one lacks, the other makes up for

coincidentally, there’s a pattern from songs of past releases where if nako has a verse or line, eunae has a part that follows & vice versa. fans call this the “eunko parts” of a mirage song

eunko once said on a livestream that their song is definitely friends by v & jimin of bts — they relate to it a lot in terms of their bond

before it became a song for mirage’s 2023 world tour, eunae’s solo song masquerade was originally going to be on rebirth — it’s written by both of them & produced by nako, which eunae requested

nako calls eunae her “soulmate” in her bubble messages, more frequently rather than using her actual name

eunae felt like if she was the last member to join, mirage would look incomplete and she would have a hard time becoming close with everyone — but nako’s arrival actually gave her some sort of reassurance and trust in the process

eunrin didn’t get along right away. it took arin stepping beyond the safety of only knowing nari & xepher for them to finally click

before this, eunae made a few attempts to connect more with her but arin wasn’t really opening up like eunae hoped

a plot twist happened when arin embraced the changes following two new members and she realized she was maybe being a little too harsh on eunae — so she began doing small, thoughtful things for her like asking to join her for food

arin and eunae are now much closer than they seem, and often spend time together to breathe when work gets stressful

they argue the most when discussing vocal distribution or/and properly hitting high notes

eunae and arin view each other more as an older/younger sister dynamic

they both got closer through sharing a hobby of covering songs together

Where Nathanaël begins his interest in art at a young age when in his first years in school. His shyness stems from being open to others but since his drawings were crude for being drawn by a child, he met with teasing and thus became reclusive even though his art greatly improved. Marinette was one who didn’t mock what he had made and he started to like her.

Where a shy and timid Nathanaël attends Collège Françoise Dupont and daydreams about being a super hero, preferring his fantasy over the reality of failing a few classes such as Physics and Mythology. His crush on Marinette is obvious if one stumbles over his sketch books so he’s adamant about not showing it to anyone. This is pre-akumatized.

V [!] Not Another Heart Shattering

Where the events the first Evillustrator have already taken place and Nathanaël has another crush but does not peruse for fear of humiliation if found out but mostly in fear of his heart not just breaking but shattering. He often draws himself with his new crush but doesn’t go as far as making himself a hero in comics like he did with Marinette. He dreads the day he gets assigned to be his crush’s partner in school.

Where Hawkmoth turns Nathanaël into a dangerous akuma artist who’s illustrations become a real threat. With the goal of acceptance in mind, he pushes the voice in his head aside to woo a certain girl. Once purified though, it’s not really over. Hawkmoth can still turn him back into the Evillustrator when the time comes. Evil can also emerge on his own as well.

Where the akuma tries to swoon a crush of his. It’s a free for all really. He’s going to pull and draw out all the stops.

Where a graduate student continues his education from secondary school and moves into another college. Basically a college verse.

Where Cracks are found everywhere. What more is needed to say? Nathanaël is a complete flirt with heart drawings and the Evillustrator dances and sings as he draws should be mentioned. It’s an entertaining sight being chased by giant products while listening to him sing Shake It Off or Womanizer.

Where at the young age of six, a child named Nathanaël observed the green scenery when a car crashed into his side, sending shards of glass into his eyes and across his face. Permanently blinded, his parents became overly protective of him and annoyed by their shelter, he grew a very snarky and sharp tongued personality. Not letting his lost of vision get to him, he still learns how to draw by using textures and will seriously beat the hell out of someone with his walking cane if they try to take advantage of him.  [[ Only @plagatastrophe ‘s Adrien/Chat, no other Adrien/Chat may interact with ]]

Where Nathanaël is chosen by a kwami named Shaaché who transforms him into Phénix Argent and gains the power of Order and Justice. He teams up with Ladybug and Chat Noir to help them in Hawkmoth’s attempts to steal their miracle stones. Phénix has an arrogant, sassy and witty personality when around the black cat but more like his civilian self when around Ladybug.

Where every warning the kwami Shaaché gives goes ignored, the miraculous of Order and Justice loses its power and turns into Chaos and Havoc. Judging by his orange suit turned black as if charred, he can easily be mistaken for attracting one of Hawkmoth’s butterflies but no. This is worse. For no one can control pure chaos.

Where the redhead had never become akumatized but given a kwami called Splinicc. Nathanaël turns into an artist who’s skills prove worthy enough to help the saviors of Paris. However, maybe the name like ‘Evillustrator’ wasn’t the best choice but that wasn’t his pick but Splinicc’s.

[ Pokemon ]  Where a trainer known as the ‘Baby Trainer’ for having a full non evolved team, Nathanaël expects others to automatically tease him. He hasn’t won a battle fairly before because of his weak team and has only won if the other trainer forfeited. He loves playing with his team more than training them and they often contribute in making art with him.

[ My Hero Academia ] Where a young student from overseas transfers to UA as his final hope to learn control over his power. He rather do search and rescue, helping people instead of harming, but unfortunately, his quirk is better suited for offense.

With @thelovesickartist Where the Evillustrator is a demon brought back by the sole purpose to gain power for possession over humans. There’s more to this tragic soul though as he had lost his wife Cornélie and four children Suzette, Élise, Ora and Frédéric and his own life in one night. Nathanaël has taken his eye for being an artist like the Evillustrator once was when he was alive but they somehow became friends and have started a very odd relationship.

I'm not well-versed in nuances of "face" culture. Things that are "unforgiveable" in China, Korea are different from each other and from the rest of the world.

Lucas' fans investigated and showed that the initial accusations were fabricated. Found who did it even. However, for the fandom at large it is irrelevant. A big mess happened. Lucas was accussed of multiple things, during the development of the scandal antis added more and more elaborated "crimes" to his name. He fell from graces. Commentary:

In order to understand why Muhammad wrote these verses we are going to need to perform Kabbalah use Hebrew Gematria. Winds are thoughts but they blow in specific directions. Solomon was clearly a thought leader and envisioned ways of managing the State no other ruler had before.

Winds cannot be distinguished from each other until they disturb what is in front of the line of sight. Thought winds are precursors to desires and wishes. Solomon was a wise man, and it was his wisdom which Allah says gave Solomon power over "diving devils."

Experts on the Quran say this about Solomon and the wind: The wind is the ability to hear and understand the divers are the Letters of the angels which deliver the knowledge of the Unseen. In the story of Solomon and Balkis, this gives his people and his army a distinct advantage over a culture of idolators with literal interpretations of religion.

Job was not all that wise, not at first but was devoted to the study of the Torah until the fruits of his actions fell the from three. We study the results of the exploits of both to this very day.

V; OF THE WILD -Sheik, originally part of the Sheikah, was kidnapped and separated from his sister at a young age by the Yiga. He grows up to be a talented Yiga assasin with little to no memory of his biological family. Sheik regards the Yiga as his family and would do anything for Master Kohga, holding the same fanatical obsession the rest of the clan held for their dear leader. 

He is sent on the same mission as the rest of the Yiga soldiers– destroy and eliminate both Zelda and Link. However, time away from the clan is beginning to weaken the hold Kohga and subsequently Ganon have over him.  Only time will tell if it will be enough for him to swear off the shackles of the Yiga clan once and for all….

V; RESCUED BY TIME - When Sheik was thrown in prison by Ganondorf, he thought his fate was sealed. He had fully accepted the possibility of his death. However, the Goddesses miracles were fickle, whimsical things. 

He had been saved, but found himself a time not his own. Now he has to find a way back to his time and back to Zelda.

Ganondorf is sealed and Sheik had been freed, but Zelda is missing. They had hoped with his mind being in tatters from Ganondorf’s magic to make him a puppet king. They could rules from the shadows while Sheik was the figure head.

Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, things don’t always play out the way the ministers want them to.

Some notes for clarification:

 Sheik is named Hyrule’s king, but no one knows what Sheik actually looks like till he ascends the throne three years after Ganon’s defeat. 

While he recovered from his disassociated states a few months after Ganondorf’s sealing, he waited until some of his memories started coming back to him to ascend the throne. This version of Sheik does regain most of his memories after he ascends the throne

Because no one knew he was supposed to be the King for the first three years of his reign he was often on the ground helping rebuild Hyrule because that’s what he had thought he could be doing. It’s a well guarded secret, and most of the time Sheik is just introduced as “an ambassador for the King of Hyrule”

He doesn’t end up becoming a puppet king, cause surprise mofo, Sheik read a lot of politics as a kid and actually does know what to do.

There was one night where all this changed however. Mia never asking to go out to a party had been invited, and had begged her parents to let her go. They’d told her no, although Mia couldn’t understand why. She never got into trouble, she knew to be responsible, but the answer remained the same.

Mia was frustrated and felt her temper flaring, the fear in her parents eyes not registering initially. She hadn’t noticed the own shift in her irises from bright green to black nor the movement of the shadows as they inked closer to her parents. It wasn’t until one of the shadowy tendrils gripped ahold of her mothers leg pulling her roughly to the ground that any of it began to hit her. By then it was too late, the damage was done. Her mother was injured and the look in both her parents had gone from loving and concern to fear and hatred.

She ran upstairs to her room and could hear the muffled sounds of a phone call being made. Less than an hour later a convoy of vans and armed guards arrived.

The room was bright and white, far too bright for Mia’s liking. They told her it was to keep the shadows at bay. To keep her from harming anyone else, but it made her head throb just looking at it. Her mind was still spiraling from the events that had led her to be thrown into what was beginning to feel more like a prison than a facility to ‘help’ mutants. ‘Mutant’ that’s what the men had called her when they had showed up fully armed to her family home, as if they had expected her to resist. Some of them had even seemed disappointed when she’d gone with them freely. What else was she meant to have done at 13 years old when her own family no longer wanted her. Even worse, they feared her.

The tests had started off invasive enough, as terrified as the young teen had been she hadn’t put up a fight at least not at first. If it meant making her better, getting rid of the darkness that plagued her, where she could be back with her family again, she would do whatever they asked. As more time passed the ‘testing’ began to get worse. The drugs they used were painful and they often used violence to illicit a response from the mutant. They weren’t trying to get rid of it, to heal her, no…she was being used as a living experiment.

The mutant started to try and fight back, but it only ended up in more violent methods being used to keep her in line. She’d often black out from the damage done and wake up right back in the horribly bright room. She wondered if her parents had known what this place was and even if they had found out if it would matter anymore.

Abilities:

- Umbrakinesis aka Ability to control and manipulate shadows.

- Ability to construct 2D and 3D constructs using shadows. Varying degree’s of these abilities use much more energy and concentration than others. For example using a shadow to mask an item verses creating a shadow weapon that is tangible and cause damage. The latter takes much more out of her.

- Ability to teleport through shadows. Again, it takes a lot of effort and she isn’t at the point where she can control this aspect of her abilities well.

TL;DR

Jody pursued a career in law enforcement after losing her parents in a hit and run accident when she was a senior in high school. The culprit was never found and she vowed to help bring people to justice and give families the closure they all deserved and that she had never gotten. After the police academy, she married her long-time boyfriend Sean Mills. They settled into Sioux Falls and started their family with their son Owen. However, tragedy soon struck in the family again when he died from meningitis when he was only six years old. A few years later when he came knocking on the door, the grieving couple did not ask any questions. However, Jody refusing to question the uprising of the dead around town led to her finding out that monsters were real in the worst way possible. Sam Winchester saved her from her zombie son, but only after he had eaten Sean. After this, Jody initially became an ally to Bobby Singer and the Winchester brothers before slowly becoming a hunter herself, though, her sheriff job was always her top priority. After some time, she soon became a mother figure to many young girls affected by the supernatural, including Alex, Claire, Patience, and Kaia.

FULL BIO

Jody was born on June 16, 1976 to two loving parents Max and Laura Parker. Her childhood passed rather uneventfully. It was a normal suburban life. Unsure of what she wanted to do with her life, she struggled through most of high school with trying to find the right career path. However, tragedy struck during her senior year of high school when her parents were both killed in a hit and run on the highway, which people could only assume was due to a drunk driver since the car had crossed into ongoing traffic, causing her father to swerve. The culprit was never found, making it an easy decision for Jody to pursue a career in law enforcement to help other families get the justice she never did. Throughout the remainder of high school and college, Jody was supported by her grandmother Christine.

A few years after graduation from Sioux Falls University and the police academy, Jody married her long-time boyfriend Sean Mills. They were friends in high school but did not start dating until they were a few years into college. The two settled together in Sioux Falls, which was only a couple of hours from her grandmother’s home in Kimball. The couple had a son together which they named Owen. Jody climbed up the ranks of the police force in town and eventually ran for sheriff and won the election. Unfortunately, things did not stay good for long and Owen fell ill at only six years old with meningitis and could not be saved at the children’s hospital. Jody and Sean were beyond devastated at the sudden and tragic death, but they stayed strong and pulled through the loss together. During this time period in her life, she had a few run-ins with someone she considered a drunk troublemaker named Bobby Singer, but she could never seem to get any solid evidence against him.

One morning, Owen showed up at the front door. Jody did not know what to make of it, but the devastated mother that she was, she accepted him with open arms. She didn't want to ask too many questions and have him taken away from her again, she didn't know if she could survive that. One morning at the diner, she ran into Sam and Dean Winchester who were claiming to be FBI agents. When she called their supervisor, she recognized Bobby's voice right off the bat and warned all three of them not to try anything. She soon arrested the Winchesters for going after another person who had came back from the dead, because she could not let them come after her son. Owen soon fell ill again, bringing back all of those terrible memories. Jody hoped it was a simple sickness, but came home after work one night to find Owen eating Sean.

Luckily for her, Sam is there to save her, but informed her that she could not save Sean because he was already gone. Sam killed Owen and Jody joined forces with him to save the town from the impending zombie attack. Unbeknownst to her, this began her long journey of interacting with the Winchesters and Bobby when she encountered the supernatural, and she eventually grew to consider them good friends. A while after this first encounter, she helped Bobby escape from FBI investigators when he had a dead body in his house and also begrudgingly helped his friend Rufus Turner escape from prison. She warned the pair they had a short amount of time before she alerted the police of Rufus's escape and also threatened Bobby that he would be in trouble if she lost her job over this.

Following a surgery a bit of time later, she realized that her hospital was full of monsters and actually watched a leviathan eat her roommate. She ended up passing out on the hurried journey back to her room and woke up to the doctor that ate her roommate telling her that he would see her soon. Panicked, she called Bobby who was able to get her out of the hospital safely. A bit later, she found Bobby in his hideout and offered to cook for him as a thank you for saving her life. She also decided to do a bit of cleaning because having a clean house was clearly not on his priority list. When she accidentally spilled some of her cleaning supplies, they were able to figure out the weakness of the leviathan, Borax. Bobby was so ecstatic that he kissed her for it. When it was time for her to leave, he gave her the head of the leviathan that he'd had captive to toss into the river.

Over the next few years, Jody has many run-ins with the Winchesters, sometimes helping them with cases and other times calling them in to help her. She started to take cases within the surrounding areas of Sioux Falls on her own, unable to sit with the idea of not helping out with the monsters she now knew about. Being a sheriff was of top priority to her, because she enjoyed it and didn't know how else she could pay for things and couldn't imagine living without a semblance of a normal life. One of her run-ins with monsters soon changed her life for the better. When she walked into the sheriff’s station after getting a call about a teenager caught breaking and entering, she found a vampire taunting a young woman. She was quick on her feet and decapitated the vampire with an axe.

She called Sam and Dean in to take care of more vampires that were likely to come for the girl, Alex. Jody found out that her real name was Annie Jones and had been kidnapped years prior. The girl no longer had any living relatives. Jody took the girl who insisted on being called Alex to a cabin for protection. Very quickly, Jody developed an attachment to the young girl that had been a lure and bloodbag for the vampire coven for eight years of her life. Alex's vampire "mother" Celia found them and tried to feed Jody to newly bitten Alex, but she refused because of how kind Jody had been to her. Celia tried to kill Jody instead, but Alex saved Jody from Celia with dead man's blood. The Winchesters were able to cure Alex of vampirism and Jody decided to take care of her, empathizing with the girl for having lost her whole family... as messed up as her family was.

A few months later, Jody was forced to attend a sheriff’s retreat in Hibbing, Minnesota. She was paired with another sheriff named Donna Hanscum and at first was pretty unhappy about it as the woman was far too perky. However, when Donna’s ex-husband was an asshole to her while they were at the bar together, Jody stood up for her. At the retreat, the subject of animal attacks in town was overheard by Jody and after some investigating she called on Sam and Dean to help out. Donna witnessed fangs and thus was initiated into those that know about the supernatural. Donna proved to be a valuable asset and after the vampire problem was taken care of, the two women spent the night talking through other monsters and how to kill them. This friendship blossomed and the two often helped each other with possible cases as well as started to hang out as friends.

About a year after she took in Alex, Claire Novak showed up on Jody’s doorstep after the Winchesters give her Jody’s information. She was the daughter of the Winchester's angel friend Castiel's vessel and she was eventually left without either of her parents and forced into life at a group home. She found a lead on her missing mother, but watched an angel kill her mother in front of her rather than have a reunion and a shot at anything close to the life she had had before her father became Castiel’s vessel. At first, Claire and Alex do not get along, Alex believing that Claire only brought trouble. The two bickered over dinner with the Winchesters which led to Jody initiating a sex talk with the both of them after finding out from Claire that Alex was planning on sneaking away to Jody's cabin with her boyfriend. The three of them were soon kidnapped by vampires seeking revenge on Alex and were rescued by the Winchesters.

Jody was badly injured in the fight, however, and the two teenagers bonded over making breakfast as an apology to her. After that, the girls understood each other a lot better and became good friends. Not too long after Jody was healed up, she caught a hunter named Asa Fox in a lie about being an agent when he was in town on a ghoul hunt. The two quickly became more than friends after a wild night that involved roller-skating after tracking down the ghouls and he would pop into town whenever he could. Jody received a call that Asa had died around a year after they had met. She attended his wake with the Winchesters and ended up possessed by the demon Jael that Asa had been tracking down, informing everyone that Bucky had been the one to kill Asa and not the demon. After this experience, Jody got an anti-possession tattoo on her hip to avoid it ever feeling the helplessness of being possessed again.

A few months after that, Claire and Jody were at odds again because Claire felt that Jody was suffocating her attempts to hunt. She went off on her own because Jody would barely let her out of the car and lied about where she was and what she was doing to prevent Jody from trying to stop her. Jody received a voicemail from Claire stating that she needed to hunt on her own for a while, but that she was ready because she had a mother like Jody to get her ready for it. Though Jody was worried about her safety, she tried her best to come to terms with it. Meanwhile, Alex enrolled into nursing school and insisted that she did not want to be very involved in hunting and that she could not stay with Jody forever because she felt that she would always be putting her in extra danger. However, Alex started to soften to the idea of helping ID monsters and dispose of bodies as well as hone in on her shooting and combat skills.

Around a year after Claire went off on her own, Jody was contacted by the Winchesters to help a psychic named Missouri Moseley find a wraith that was killing psychics. Jody and Dean were able to save Missouri’s granddaughter from the wraith, but Missouri had been killed by it Patience expressed that her father told her to ignore her psychic abilities and live a normal life and Jody pulled her to the side and told her she needed to follow her heart. Jody had learned from trying to stop Claire from what who she was had not worked and was never the right decision in the first place. She gave her a card with her number on it and said that she was always available if she needed someone to talk to. She didn’t hear from Patience until she showed up on her doorstep claiming she had a vision that something bad was coming.

The Winchesters were asking for help tracking down a girl named Kaia Nieves and soon after Jody couldn’t get ahold of them. She called Claire and left a voicemail explaining the situation. Claire came home immediately and the women were able to save Kaia from a monster. As they are performing an autopsy on the creature, they are all forced to flee Jody’s home as Patience had a vision that cloaked figures were coming for them. Jody called in Donna for further backup and Kaia and Claire were able to save the Winchesters from The Bad Place, but Kaia died in the process. Jody held a distraught Claire arms and had a heart to heart with her that night. Claire finally understood why Jody was so protective over her.

After that, Jody found room in her home to house all three young women. Alex started slowly hunting on her days off from nursing. The three girls got along well and Claire was often training them up between cases of Jody’s while working out how to avenge Kaia’s death. It was eventually revealed to Jody and the Winchesters that Kaia’s killer was Kaia from the alternate reality of The Bad Place. Because Claire is still healing from losing her first love, Jody decided to keep this a secret from her. It was found out months later that Kaia was still alive and trapped in the Bad Place. Jody was convinced by Castiel to stay behind from the rescue mission because he doesn’t believe Claire could survive losing both Kaia and Jody, but she could survive losing Kaia again. Jody still wasn’t too sure about the second part, so she decided to not tell Claire until she knew it was a real thing.

Kaia was rescued by the Winchesters and Jody was ecstatic to reunite her with Claire. She took Kaia in as well and having four girls needing a place to stay she realized she would need a bigger home and sold her current home in Sioux Falls opting for a larger one. Jody would have never guessed this would be the pathway for her life, but all of the girls in her life are very important to her. After everything with Claire, she will always lead with the mantra that they can decide what they want to be and what they want to do and she will always be there to support them through it. The young network of hunters seem very determined in cutting down on monster populations in a more humane way than the secondhand tales of how the British Men of Letters had in Britain.

Mia’s life started as normal as most. She was a straight A student and kind hearted if not a bit introverted. She was pretty close to both of her parents, most of the time choosing to spend time with them verses going out with friends even as she got to that age where most teens began to rebel. There was one night where all this changed however. Mia never asking to go out to a party had been invited, and had begged her parents to let her go. They’d told her no, although Mia couldn’t understand why. She never got into trouble, she knew to be responsible, but the answer remained the same.

Mia was frustrated and felt her temper flaring, the fear in her parents eyes not registering initially. She hadn’t noticed the own shift in her irises from bright green to black nor the movement of the shadows as they inked closer to her parents. It wasn’t until one of the shadowy tendrils gripped ahold of her mothers leg pulling her roughly to the ground that any of it began to hit her. By then it was too late, the damage was done. Her mother was injured and the look in both her parents had gone from loving and concern to fear and hatred.

She ran upstairs to her room and could hear the muffled sounds of a phone call being made. Less than an hour later a convoy of vans and armed guards arrived.

The room was bright and white, far too bright for Mia’s liking. They told her it was to keep the shadows at bay. To keep her from harming anyone else, but it made her head throb just looking at it. Her mind was still spiraling from the events that had led her to be thrown into what was beginning to feel more like a prison than a facility to ‘help’ mutants. ‘Mutant’ that’s what the men had called her when they had showed up fully armed to her family home, as if they had expected her to resist. Some of them had even seemed disappointed when she’d gone with them freely. What else was she meant to have done at 13 years old when her own family no longer wanted her. Even worse, they feared her.

The tests had started off invasive enough, as terrified as the young teen had been she hadn’t put up a fight at least not at first. If it meant making her better, getting rid of the darkness that plagued her, where she could be back with her family again, she would do whatever they asked. As more time passed the ‘testing’ began to get worse. The drugs they used were painful and they often used violence to illicit a response from the mutant. They weren’t trying to get rid of it, to heal her, no…she was being used as a living experiment.

The mutant started to try and fight back, but it only ended up in more violent methods being used to keep her in line. She’d often black out from the damage done and wake up right back in the horribly bright room. She wondered if her parents had known what this place was and even if they had found out if it would matter anymore.

Abilities:

- Umbrakinesis aka Ability to control and manipulate shadows.

- Ability to construct 2D and 3D constructs using shadows. Varying degree’s of these abilities use much more energy and concentration than others. For example using a shadow to mask an item verses creating a shadow weapon that is tangible and cause damage. The latter takes much more out of her.

- Ability to teleport through shadows. Again, it takes a lot of effort and she isn’t at the point where she can control this aspect of her abilities well.
