Jikook Week 44 Complete (08/10-15/10/2024)

Their 44th week in the military is now complete. It's time to celebrate with a look back at this week in 2014.

This was the Dark & Wild era and in researching this post I was drawn back to Beyond the Story to reread what the members and particular J-Hope & V said about promoting Danger, the title track.

"All those performances for "Danger" were really exhausting. When we had that comeback with "Danger" releasing the Dark & Wild album, we'd done about twenty music show pre-recordings and then went to a different program where they announced first place. We were told we had to be there, so we went up there live, completely out of it. Then, it turned out we weren't even candidate for first place, which I think was a big shock." J-Hope

"It's fine if other teams are named as candidates for first place. We just need to work harder. But at the broadcasting stations, we'd always be the first to say hello and greet everyone, the seonbaes and the hubaes alike, but some people just ignored us and passed right by. Or mocked us for not being candidates for the top place.

After the broadcast, we all got into the van together...... Someone was crying, someone was getting really mad, and someone just couldn't speak. The unspeakable disappointment and that tear-jerking emotion was too much

That's when we thought, 'Hey us, let's do really well. So that no one will ever look down on us again.' Looking back, I'm glad we at least got a hold of ourselves back then (laughs). Because we all found our resolve, we had that determination and we all came together as one, swearing to become a really awesome group together" V

That belief that they were in this together and they only had each other comes out very strongly in their SM posts of the time and can perhaps be best illustrated by vmin's TwiX posts. These two romantic & sensitive 95 liners were also ambitious & determined to succeed together with their team.

This week in 2014 was the tail end of the Danger promo period and images and videos from previous performances were released.

For their Music Bank show there was a mission challenge to make a heart for the audience during the performance.

It's such a complete contrast their gentle laddish camaraderie in the dressing room compared to the tough macho attitudes they were portraying on stage.

Even with the difficulties facing them off stage as soon as the lights went up they delivered smash performances EVERY SINGLE TIME.

This week was also countdown to the the Red Bullet Tour (17-19/10/2014) and the release of War of Hormone (21/10/2014).

this is tewwww serious tewwwwww serious....... jongyu have some many silly moments i adore, even if im not hello baby number one fan they're so funny there, like just two dudes in their early 20s being dead beat fathers, i like this hello baby clip, and this one also this one. also every jongyu 151231 fancam like they're silly silly (its funny to me how rv members are there), when jjong called the members ananatachi (you guys) and jinki made his famous word play with under the sea making jjong laugh.

ofc these two behind concert clips, them being two chismosos one two three four five six, when jinki attented jjong con and they sang please dont go together after so long (i ii iii iv v vi ), their winking game on stage, when jinki after the ny countdown blew a kiss to jjong, this clip during everybody stage behind, them playing house + fujo taem, the 👉🏽 thing during ayo, line music express interview ofc, jjong forgetting selene lyrics and jinki sings the verse to help him/ jinki forgetting selene and jjong fake chokes him.

hmmmmmmm 321, this interview where they choose eo as the kindest member, when jinki went to x inspiration and jjong greeted him without mentioning his name bcs 'he feels shy' + in his last ment he was like 'have inspiration (to fans) but no inspiration for that yeongman', and all of their duets (other than please don't go, my faves are tragedy and like a man)

onho is so easy. onho piggyback during lucifer, their in your eyes duet (+ 48 hours segment where they talk abt how they care for eo), this silly fancam, when jinki appeared during minho's military discharge (esp the part where minho says to jinki to believe in his unfunny jokes, also their giggling bewitched me), that music bank interview where they successfully connect, ofc the seek 12 fart contest interview, not enough rice when jinki kept failing to jump the rope right and minho screams at him, the shinee ghost story, when during piece of shine minho began to sing blue.

hmmmmmmm lewser jinki in that isac moment (not the one with luna but the one where minho gets 1st place), them dancing to everybody during becho, also jinki going to minho's heartbreak stage, that moment during the press your number showcase lol and them during marie claire behind

I’m not a huge fan of comparing the members, but Jimin’s latest post about not being able to say much because he’s in the military juxtaposed by V posting about fast food and RM posting about his countdown to tell you all we need to know about who is serving in a very serious location and who, while completing physically demanding tasks, is not. Jikook are on the front line. They aren’t safe enough to talk to us frequently.

No real point to this, but I realized this week that was the best example of what their military realities are.

Jikook Week 23 Complete ✔️(14 - 21/05/2024)

Their twenty third week in the military is now complete and time to celebrate this milestone with a look back at this week in 2015.

It was The Most Beautiful Moment in Life Part 1 era and the lead single I Need You was being promoted on all the SK music shows.

On the 14th May they appeared on Mnet Countdown.

and Jungkook posted on TwiX saying, "Thank you for your effort!!! I will perform brightly tomorrow as well ㅋㅋ"

In researching these weekly blogs I keep finding out new things about South Korea. Did you know that Koreans celebrate THIRTEEN Valentine's Days and one of them is the 14th May known as Yellow Valentine's Day or Rose Day.

"On Yellow Day, singles who want to be in a relationship wear a yellow shirt and order a “yellow” curry at a restaurant as a symbolic gesture that encourages them to get rid of their “single status.” For those who already have a lover, they would instead celebrate Rose Day by exchanging roses."

On this day in 2015, Jimin sent a rose to ARMY, "I heard it's Rose Day today. I didn't have time, so I drew it in a hurry. Thank you so much ARMY for supporting us today too. Thank you every day, every day"

It was a week of non-stop fan signings and music show appearances. Fansignings - Wow look how young and adorable they were in 2015.

In addition to Mnet Countdown, they appeared on Arirang Simply Kpop, KBS Music Bank, MBC Music Core, SBS Inkigayo and Show Champion. They were burning the candle at both ends. V even admited that they were exhausted in this backstage segment from Show Champion.

The segment was called Loyal Boys and they had to choose someone else in the group to praise. Who does JK choose to praise....hmmm well no surprises there then.

Inglourious Basterds

I am jumping out of order with the third Quentin Tarantino film I am covering here is not QT’s third film, Jackie Brown, but instead for his 2009 alternate take on World War II, Inglourious Basterds (trailer). Click or press here for my article on Reservoir Dogs, and click or press here for my entry on Pulp Fiction. I have owned the BluRay since it first released well over a decade ago, and it is a shame yet another QT gem has sat in my backlog for so long. This takes place in occupied France with a riveting opening scene where German Col. Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz) conducts an interview with a local dairy farmer which eventually leads to questioning about missing Jews. This being a QT film, the dialog is intentionally drawn out, with Hans pausing the interview for a refreshing glass of milk, and digressing on other tangents before eventually getting to the burning question. Once again, QT absolutely nails the art of conversation like very few of his peers can. Every subtle body language flinch and pivot throughout their verbal exchange is not wasted, and it ultimately pays off with a unforgettable impact to close the scene. If it was almost any other filmmaker, my tolerance would have surely been tested, but there is something to QT’s scripts that without fail have me 100% invested in their surplus of verbiage as much as a climactic action scene in the latest summer blockbuster.

Be prepared for some vintage-QT dialog-heavy scenes...I wouldn't want it any other way from him! This being a WWII film, one would think it would be safe to presume there is a fair amount of military combat scenes. While there is a significant body count by the end of the film, the firefights are not of the typical Hollywood WWII fare, so do not expect any all-out tanks, war planes, and massive artillery skirmishes. Most of the action that transpires here involves a team of Jewish American soldiers headed up by Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt). After the absurd fallout from their latest mission in a basement tavern, they receive intel from undercover operative Bridget von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) that Nazi leadership including Hitler (Martin Wuttke) himself will be at the grand opening of the latest military propaganda film, Nation’s Pride.

The theater owner where Nation’s Pride will be premiering, Shosanna (Mélanie Laurent), has an intriguing arc on how she is roped into debuting the film at her cinema which is caused by the relentless intimate pursuit of German soldier, Frederick Zoller (Daniel Brühl). Without giving too much away, Shosanna has her own agenda too, and everything builds up splendidly to the big premiere night of Nation’s Pride. I vividly remember going into the theater not clued into the ending which I will not spoil here, and I was instantly stunned at the direction QT went for the final act. There is nearly an hour and a half of bonus material on the BluRay. The standout bonus is a half hour interview with Brad Pitt and QT, conducted by Elvis Mitchell with some highlights of their conversation being how energetic the overall shoot was, and what it was like premiering the film in Germany. Other extra features worth checking out is the full six minute cut of Nation’s Pride, a quick look back with interviews of the cast and crew from the original 1978 Inglorious Bastards, and a pair of interviews with Rod Taylor who has some fun behind-the-scenes stories with QT on how the two have the utmost respect for each other.

Inglourious Basterds did not disappoint with a highly entertaining second viewing where nearly the entire ensemble cast excelled in their performances! For a film that is two and a half hours long, it proved to be a swift viewing after being so engrossed with all the aforementioned dialog-dense scenes. I cannot fairly rank this among QT’s movies as I nearly love them all equally, but it goes without saying if you have made it this far then you know I am giving this the highest of recommendations!
