First Indian CinemaScope film and last film directed by the legendary Guru Dutt.
The innocence portrayed by the protégé Waheeda Rehman and the strength shown in choosing an incomplete life, is talked about less, when the other character is played by her mentor himself.
GuruDutt’s melancholic hold over the entire film was made possible through VK Murthy’s precise and thought-out lighting. It is then you realise the cinematographer’s contribution in delivering to the world a dream, out of the director’s womb.
And how it would break a person if that dream was not just a film but your whole idea of reality, and it fails to find its place in the reality of Life.
Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959) was not a commercial success like Pyaasa, CID, Mr and Mrs 55; it was disliked right from the premiere for introducing the audiences to the dark side of showbiz. Fast forward to 1980s, it received the recognition it desired and lamented for, being given titles like “a masterpiece” or “a cult classic.” It is hard to believe it is the same film that broke the already broken man. He left, his search for meaning through his work had failed him, or so he thought. We couldn’t comprehend and he couldn’t wait.
However, there are endless articles now, discussing every little detail of the film. International film festivals laud Guru Dutt for his creative thirst. We are celebrating its release even today in 2024. Is it because we have come close to accepting the paper flowers more practically now, given the simulated feelings have become our only basis to study depth.
It is not so simple to describe Kaagaz Ke Phool as a tragedy of two lonely people seeking support in each other, when the great actor-director goes beyond the film and lives the character. It is brilliant as much as it is tragic.

Today, we celebrate the birth anniversary of #VKMurthy, born on November 26, 1923, a legendary figure in Indian cinema. Best known for his collaboration with Guru Dutt, Murthy was not just a cinematographer but a visionary artist. His journey from being a violinist and a freedom fighter to becoming a celebrated cinematographer is a tale of resilience and talent.
Murthy’s career in films began with 'Maharana Prathap,' but his big break came as an assistant cinematographer in 'Baazi' (1951), directed by Guru Dutt. His exceptional work caught Dutt's eye, leading to a lifelong collaboration that included masterpieces like 'Pyaasa,' 'Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam,' and 'Aar Paar.' Murthy’s work on 'Kaagaz Ke Phool' (1959), India's first cinemascope film, is particularly noteworthy for its innovative use of lighting and camera techniques, earning him widespread acclaim and awards.
His contribution to the Indian film industry was immense, particularly in the era of black and white films, where he created some of the most memorable images. His talent in creating visual poetry was recognized with prestigious awards, including the IIFA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005 and the Dada Saheb Phalke Award in 2010.
After Guru Dutt's untimely demise, Murthy continued his artistic journey with directors like Kamal Amrohi, working on classics like 'Pakeezah' and 'Razia Sultan.' His ability to adapt and excel continued in his collaborations with filmmakers like Pramod Chakravarthy and Shyam Benegal, notably in the television series 'Bharat Ek Khoj.'
Murthy's innovation was not just limited to film; his training stint in London included working on the crew of 'The Guns of Navarone.' Back in India, he broke new ground in Hindi cinema and was instrumental in shaping the visual narrative of the time.
His journey from a passionate film enthusiast, who was initially refused admission to a film-making course, to becoming the cinematographer of India’s first cinemascope movie is a testament to his determination and skill. His legacy lives on in the frames he crafted, the stories he helped tell, and the history he created in Indian cinema. On his birthday, we honor and remember V. K. Murthy, a true pioneer in the world of cinematography.

Thangalaan Movie Review: The film works because of its concept and Pa Ranjith's execution.
Thangalaan Movie Review Synopsis: THANGALAAN follows the narrative of a brave guy. The year is 1850. Thangalaan (Chiyaan Vikram) is the Veppur village leader, who lives with his wife Gangamma (Parvathy Thiruvothu) and their four children. Despite his position as chief, he is forced to labor as a bonded labourer. The zamindar's (Vettai Muthukumar) soldiers set fire to his farm, destroying his produce. He is unable to pay taxes and is compelled to relinquish his land. This is when Lord Clement (Daniel Caltagirone), a British officer, comes in Veppur. He is looking for gold in a nearby region and asks the Veppur people for assistance because he is aware of their ancestral ability in locating it. Everyone initially refuses, claiming that the gold mine area is filled with ghosts. Thangalaan's great-grandfather, Kaadaiyan (Chiyaan Vikram), was also an expert. Thangalaan agrees, and a few villagers accompany him in the gold-finding mission. Thangalaan, on the other hand, suffers from hallucinations of Aarathi (Malavika Mohanan), a sorceress and defender of the gold field. What occurs next determines the rest of the film.
Thangalaan Movie plot Review:
Pa Ranjith and Tamil Praba's plot is creative and unique. Pa Ranjith and Tamil Praba's screenplay has flaws, but it is thorough, engaging, and addresses some significant subjects. Azhagiya Periyavan's dialogue is crisp. However, the Hindi-dubbed dialogues fall short of expectations.
Pa Ranjith's direction is exceptional. There is no doubt that he is technically proficient. He has previously employed sound, mood, camerawork, and other techniques to create a distinct cinematic experience, and THANGALAAN is no exception. The moment in the pre-climax that transitions from night to day and back again demonstrates his creative ability. He also offers the film a commercial approach while avoiding the common cliches seen in mass entertainment. He does everything his own way. While doing so, he discusses caste atrocities and avarice, which contributes significantly to the picture.
On the other hand, in numerous instances, the film becomes overly weighty and even untidy. There is a lot going on, and the audience may become overwhelmed as they assimilate everything. The film is also quite abstract, and despite commercial components, it is not your standard mass-appeal film. These two reasons would limit the attractiveness.
Thangalaan Movie Review Performances:
Chiyaan Vikram becomes unrecognizable. His change is incredible, and his performance is nothing short of spectacular. He has delivered some outstanding performances, and this is undoubtedly one of his greatest. Parvathy Thiruvothu gets into character and appears to be a poor peasant. She also has a significant role and performs admirably. Malavika Mohanan has a minimal screen time but steals the show. She is an excellent fit for the role. Daniel Caltagirone is amazing. Vettai Muthukumar is barely present. Hari Krishnan (Varada), Preeti Karan (Arasani), Arjun Anbudan (Asoka), and others provide valuable support.
Thangalaan music and technical aspects:
G V Prakash Kumar's music is not chartbuster and may not appeal to the Hindi audience. The film's tracks, including 'Murga Murgi', 'Katai Ghana', 'Koi To Aae Raah Dikhae', and the title song, fail to attract. G V Prakash Kumar's background score is significantly better.
Kishor Kumar's cinematography is stunning. The action in Stunner Sam is a little gory, but it works well for this type of picture. The outfits worn by Aegan Ekambaram and Anitha Sundaresan are not glamorous, but rather realistic and rustic. S S Murthi's art direction is thoroughly researched. Hybrid 360's visual effects are exceptional. Selva R K's editing could have been smoother and faster-paced.
Thangalaan Movie Review Conclusion:
The film's concept, execution by Pa Ranjith, and award-winning performance by Chiyaan Vikram contribute to its overall success. However, this is not your usual mainstream entertainer. As a result, its Hindi adaptation will require strong word-of-mouth from its target population to be successful at the box office.

Once upon a time, there was a demon king named Hiranyakashipu. The powerful demon had been granted a boon that made him virtually indestructible. According to the boon, he could not be killed by any man or beast, indoors or outdoors, during the day or the night, and not by any weapon. Hiranyakashipu became arrogant and tyrannical, causing havoc in the world. Hiranyakashipu's son, Prahlada, was a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu. Despite his father's oppressive rule, Prahlada remained steadfast in his devotion to the divine. Angered by Prahlada's unwavering faith, Hiranyakashipu decided to eliminate him. He attempted to kill Prahlada in various ways, but each time, Vishnu's divine intervention protected the young devotee. Hiranyakashipu, frustrated by Prahlada's unwavering devotion to Lord Vishnu, confronts his son and demands, "Where is your Vishnu? Show me where he is hiding!" Prahlada fearlessly replies, "O father, Vishnu is omnipresent. He resides in every atom and all of creation. He is present everywhere, even in this pillar." Enraged by Prahlada's response, Hiranyakashipu strikes the pillar with his mace. To everyone's astonishment, the pillar splits open, and Lord Narasimha, the half-man, half-lion incarnation of Lord Vishnu, emerges from it. Narasimha emerged from a pillar, which was neither indoors nor outdoors, at the twilight, which was neither day nor night. Using his mighty claws, which were not actual weapons, Narasimha swiftly slew Hiranyakashipu. But the rage within him did not subside. Narasimha continued his destructive rampage, threatening the balance of the universe. To quell Narasimha's anger, Lord Shiva took the extraordinary form of Sharabeshwara (also known as Simhagna). Sharabeshwara's form was fantastic and powerful, with the head of a bird (Shabala or Sharabha), mighty wings, and multiple legs! Lord Shiva assumed this extraordinary form to pacify Narasimha and protect the cosmic order. A fierce battle ensued between Sharabeshwara and Narasimha. Eventually, Sharabeshwara subdued Narasimha and calmed his ferocity. This epic story is not mythology; it is a historical account of the true history of the universe. Today, Bhagavan Simhagna Murthy manifests again through His Living Manifestation, THE SUPREME PONTIFF OF HINDUISM (SPH), BHAGAVAN SRI NITHYANANDA PARAMASHIVAM, and graces the universe!

W5: Digital Citizenship and Political Engagement
Digital citizens refer to individuals or groups who utilize digital technology for the purpose of engaging in networked participatory behaviours (Lu et al. 2023). It involves four interconnected elements: individual, policy, political, and social participation (Lu et al. 2023). Digital citizens imply equality in transmitting and receiving knowledge (Jessenia et al. 2020), regardless of factors that might cause exclusion such as gender, age, and social and economic status. Digital citizenship is briefly defined as the norms of responsible behaviour considering the use of technology by digital citizens such as ethical awareness, empathy, and responsibility (Mossberger, Tolbert & McNeal 2007). But nowadays, digital citizenship has evolved into a form of online engagement and participation through appropriate communication and decision-making processes (M Jones & J Mitchell 2016). One of the characteristics of digital citizenship is the high level of activity in responding to public issues by citizens, especially through social media (Mulyono et al. 2023). The citizen’s participation in public issues refers to the term “engagement” which is understood to include social capital, civic engagement, and political participation (Skoric et al. 2016). Social media therefore serves as a key tool to boost citizen engagement through communication, discussion, and the coordination of public and social activities (Warren, Sulaiman & Jaafar 2014).
Twitter exemplifies a powerful platform for citizen engagement and political communication tools (Campos-Domínguez 2017). Research suggests its potential to increase voter engagement, as evidenced in the 2010 UK elections, the 2012 US presidential elections, and the 2013 Italian elections (Murthy 2015). Notably, the 2012 US elections saw Twitter abuzz with hashtags like #gop, #gop2012, and #republicanprimary, demonstrating its role in shaping public discourse.
While Twitter serves as a valuable tool for political campaigns, debates, crowdsourcing, and information verification, it also presents challenges. Its speed, immediacy, and hashtag-driven nature can facilitate the spread of misinformation, rumours, and even verbal violence(Oh, Eom & Rao 2015). Research suggests its potential for opinion-building, democratic development, and even limited media freedom in regions where voting rights are restricted. However, the 2016 US election saw Twitter potentially contribute to decreased approval ratings for Trump, possibly due to a "backlash" effect from moderate voters against his unique Twitter behavior (Bursztyn, Egorov & Fiorin 2020). Trump's prolific tweeting differed from other candidates in tone, content, and hashtag usage. Notably, his tweets often included disinformation and distrustful narratives. His signature #MAGA hashtag fostered a community of followers who readily spread his messages, further amplified by media coverage, creating a self-reinforcing cycle.
