Home stretch now. During the 10s, I had a tendency to fall off with bands pretty quickly: most of the time I was happy just to have one or two records by someone and it was extremely rare for me to rake thru long back catalogues. I say this to be clear that the *checks notes* 27 Fred Thomas records, tapes, CDs and digital albums that I’ve racked up since the end of 2017 under six different project names (including buying two copies of three of them for extremely spurious reasons) are not a general habit for me. And tho I can’t say that every song on them is up to the standard of Voiceover, I’m not sorry and I’d do it again.

Voiceover was the “big” single (it got a video!) from Changer, the first Fred LP that I bought and which became a companion to me in my early days of being able to listen to music while walking in 2018. Voiceover itself is a great song to walk to, not for entirely different reasons to the more rhythmic tracks that I’ve already picked out for that quality. That skittery guitar intro makes me skip my feet a little, but its Fred’s delivery here that’s key, a kind of spoken word stream of consciousness ramble which occasionally takes off into wonderful yelled passages of which I know every word and inflection. The big moment is the extended (only comes around the once but you know it’s the) chorus at the end, where he randomly shouts about different kinds of feelings - “bus station feelings”; “UTI feelings”; “angry dad feelings! - over a celebratory fanfare, paying tribute to the faint possibility of his being “something more than just a cloud of distressed emotions” to anyone else at all. While I have a long list of favourite lines in this immensely quotable song, it’s the “internet feelings”  that hit me hardest now, for reasons that grew out of my love for this record.

As it happened, I wrote a blogpost about Changer that was read by about three people, one of whom was a woman in LA who liked it and followed me on Twitter. We got to talking about obscure indie acts and both being long term sick (such is my patter with the ladies) and then something odd happened  - we fell in love from over 5000 miles apart. Tho it’s tricky to manage - I guess neither of us could cope with having someone around them all the time but I’d rather she was at the bottom of the road tbh - she remains the most wonderful thing that’s ever happened to me. I’m not usually one for the idea of records changing my life - it happens very rarely and generally by accident - but Changer, and Voiceover by extension, is one of them. So, when Fred sings of “all those internet feelings”, I guess that he knew what he was talking about. Sadly, none of the other 26 generally excellent LPs I’ve bought by him (and I’ve bought Changer twice dammit!) have had a similar effect on any other aspect of anything at all. But I keep buying them all the same.

New Me

Tulisan yang bagus harusnya bisa dinikmati banyak orang. Tapi enggak menurut gue. Menulis adalah cara paling romantis buat menumpahkan segala emosi. Bahkan gue sendiri hanya mau dan sanggup nulis kalau emosi lagi meluap-luap. Inget ya, emosi ga melulu marah, sedih. Bisa juga seneng salah satu bentuk dari emosi.

Gue selalu suka nulis. Meski tulisan gue sampe sekarang belom ada yang bisa bener-bener menikmati. Dulu, gue adalah orang yang sangat emosional. Bahkan gue selalu menulis cerita menarik yang gue kasih nomer 1-30an (kalau gasalah) but for some reason, gue harus rela ngehapus semua itu. Dan skrg gue lupa dimana itu file. Hehe

Skip tentang alasan menulis, gua selalu berharap selalu punya alasan punya nulis. Entah itu bentuknya kebahagiaan atau bahkan kesedihan. Selalu punya inspirasi yang gapernah mati, meski raga udah gaada.

Nenek gua adalah most inspiration yang pernah hidup di dunia ini. Entah kenapa, gue selalu merasa jadi anaknya. Bahkan setelah ade gue lahir, sepupu-sepupu gue lahir, cinta uti (panggilan buat nenek gue) gapernah berkurang. Bisa dibilang, uti sedikit pilih kasih sama cucu-cucu yang lain. Dia hanya mau ngajak gue kalau jalan. Beliin baju, makanan bahkan nonton dan bilang 'gausah bilang ade-adenya' hehehe gue gapermah bilang sih. Bahkan sama ema gua aja gua diem. Kerja sama yang bagus kita?

Uti adalah orang terkuat yang pernah gue kenal. Dia adalah orang yang pemberani buat ukuran seorang paruh baya. Selalu bawa motor kemana-kemana, gatakut buat ngomong kalau ada sesuatu yang salah, perhatian banget bahkan sama sesuatu hal yang kecil. Dan paling pantang beli hal-hal kw alias palsu hehehe. Dan uti lebih suka du*kin do*uts dibandingkan jc*. Padahal seumur-umur gue hidup, jc* lebih enak:(

Uti kuat, tapi uti juga sakit. Ada hari tertentu dia minta tolong hanya untuk ke kamar mandi. Ada hari tertentu, dia minta ini itu di bangsal rumah sakit. Tapi uti tetep bawel, tetep becanda, like nothing happens.

Katanya, uti memanggil nama gue terus-terusan. Tapi gue masih tidur di kamar. Terpaut 250km dari rumah uti, Jakarta.

Gue menjalani hari seperti biasa. Hingga akhirnya sebuah kabar itu datang. Uti gamau nyusahin orang lagi. Cukup dengan sakit 8 hari dan dia nyebut satu persatu nama cucunya, yang termasuk gue, di bangsal rumah sakit.

Jam 10, uti pamit.

Gue baru bangun tidur dapet kabar kalau uti lebih suka beristirahat daripada nyusahin anak dan cucunya di dunia. Gue gabisa nangis. Cuma diem. Perjalanan Jakarta-Cirebon entah kenapa terasa lebih lama.

Rumah uti masih ramai. Gue turun, dan semua orang natap gue aneh. Tante, langsung meluk gue. Gue nangis kejer disitu. Uti udah gaada, udah dimakamin. Bahkan gue, cucu kesayangannya ini terlalu jahat buat ngehadirin pemakamannya. Hal itu bahkan selalu masih menjadi penyesalan buat gue. Uti udah pergi hampir 4 taun. Tapi cerita tentang perjuangan dia adalah cerita paling indah yang selalu pengen gua tulis. Bahkan gue masih nangis ketika nginget itu.

Beberapa hal yang bisa gue kasih tau setelah cerita uti gue adalah, pertama, jangan pernah siasiakan kesempatan terakhir. Basi sih emang, tapi waktu adalah kunci dari segala hal yang kita punya. Kapan lagi kalau ga sekarang. Lu gapernah tau kapan orang yang lu sayang pergi. Telpon mereka, bilang kangen atau sayang atau apapun yang bikin mereka tau kalau lu sayang. Siapapun itu, mau nenek, kakek, orang tua atau pacarlu. Semua orang harus tau kalau lu emang beneran sayang sama mereka. Words can mean anything. Bahkan 1 kata pun.

Sesuai judul tulisan kali ini, uti adalah orang yang berhasil membawa perubahan buat gue baik sebelum atau sesudah dia pergi. Sosok uti adalah orang yang gapernah berhenti menginspirasi siapapun yang pernah kenal dia. Gue tau, siapapun kalian yang baca tulisan gue pasti punya panutan yang sama kaya uti gue. Saran gue, please, sekecil apapun perubahan kearah yang lebih baik itu perlu banget. Kalau lu gapunya alasan buat berubah menjadi baik, jadikan orang kesayanganlu sebagai panutan. Jadikan mereka alasan lu buat berubah.

Itu juga yang lagi gue coba lakuin. Setelah banyak struggle di kuliah, mulai dari butuh motivasi yang besar sampe butuh hal sepele kaya semangat dari temen, gue sadar harus ada yang baru dari gue. Move on.

Move one itu sederhana. Yang ga sederhana adalah alasan kenapa kita gabisa move on. Alasan yang menggelayuti pikiran kita sampe kadang kita mager sendiri buat move on. Sama-sama doain aja. Gue percaya setiap orang akan ketemu sama waktunya masing-masing. Saat ini, mungkin gue masih gini-gini aja. Mungkin waktu move on gua masih beberapa bulan atau taun

Gue selalu berjanji, buat bisa sekolah ke belanda sama uti. Gue gatau kapan gue bisa kesana, tapi ya doain aja. Itu cita-cita gue sama uti.

Satu hal lagi dari tulisan ini, gue sadar ini tulisan ga jelas arahnya. Apakah mau menceritakan a atau b itu masih gajelas. Gue terlalu lemah buat nulis serius skrg. Setiap gue inget how cheerful uti gue, gue sedih. Dia ternyata udah gaada. Gue masih belom bisa face the truth aja. Filipino volunteer dies of coronavirus in Dubai

Dubai: A Filipino volunteer who helped in the distribution of free meals has handed away in Dubai because of problems from coronavirus, his nephew and the Philippines Consul Normal have confirmed.

Mac says this fresh work just off of Adams near Crenshaw in Los Angeles is a companion work to ‘La Mère Créatrice’, painted in Montreal in 2016. Mac’s “homage to feminine creative force” is a tribute to artistic mothers: from the influence of his mother on his career, to his mother-in-law who recently passed away, to the figure in this mural “Jane Choe, the fiery artistic mother of my friend David Choe.” Collaborating with Mac on this wall was his talented young UTI crewmate, Aise Born, who added what Mac refers to as the “Alphonse Mucha-inspired acrylic embellishment on the halo designs.” One quickly runs out of superlatives to describe El Mac’s work, but El Mac and Aise have created something truly special.  @mac_arte  @aiseborn
