Learning Experience | ♿️🙏🏽 A huge thanks to @parasportspokane and @usparalympics for hosting this past weekend's "U.S. Paralympic Track & Field Gateway to Gold Performance Clinic" in Spokane, Washington. I am very grateful to have been invited from a select number of athletes to this event. I definitely learned a lot this past Saturday and I am sure that what I have learned will benefit me in the long run. A special thanks to Coach Teresa for always helping me to become a better athlete, and to U.S. Paralympic Thrower, Paralympic gold medalist, and current world record holder Rachael Morrison for taking the time to chat with me during the clinic. I even got to meet up with some brothas from Tri-Cities who I haven't seen in at least a year! Lastly, thanks to my dad for driving us to and from Spokane and for taking most of these pictures. Over a year and a half ago, Marco (@marco_o22lbf) was told that there were possibilities he would never play The Beautiful Game again. In January of 2016, he was able to run again after learning how to move the right side of his body. In May, he was told he could finally start training and playing. In November of 2016, he was invited to the U.S. Soccer Paralympics National Team training camp! Marco is pictured here wearing our black "Faith and Football" shirt, and simply said by him, these represent "Two of the most beautiful things in the world." Today is the International Day of Persons With Disability, and today we celebrate not only how far we’ve come, but how far we hope to go.

This international celebration began in 1992, and has been celebrated on December 3rd in the years since. Until 2007, it was called International Day of Disabled Persons, but was changed that year and has remained “Persons WITH Disability” since then. Even this small change in wording can have a huge impact.

This change turns an identifying adjective into an individual person who happens to have an extra challenge. These small steps move us forward to a greater future where inclusion does not have to be forced, where differences are celebrated, and where labels don’t define us.

Speaking as someone who was born with their disability and has known nothing else, I can honestly say that I am proud to be exactly as I am. Being an amputee has given me opportunities I could never have dreamed of, and has helped me grow as a person, discover my identity, and strengthen my faith.

Tomorrow, I fly to Dallas for the U.S. Paralympics Swimming nationals this weekend. I am so excited to reunite with friends I haven’t seen in far too long, race for Team USA, and make unforgettable memories. Representing the stars and stripes is always an indescribable honor.
