The walk to Minghao’s office felt like an eternity. The fluorescent lights above hummed softly, casting long, sharp shadows on the cold tile floor. You tried to steady your breath, but your heart pounded in your chest, each thud like a drumbeat. You couldn’t shake the feeling that something had gone terribly wrong today—had you missed something in 502B? Or maybe it was during the consult with ortho? You replayed every moment in your head, frantically searching for the mistake that had surely caught his attention.

When you reached his office, your hand hesitated on the doorknob, and your throat tightened. You took a deep breath, trying to push past your anxiety, before stepping inside.

“Come in,” his smooth voice called, calm and unbothered, but it only made your nerves worse.

You closed the door behind you with a soft click and stood there for a moment, taking in the sight of him. Minghao was leaning against his desk, one arm casually folded across his chest, the other hand brushing back his messy hair. His lab coat was half unbuttoned—always that effortless, annoying perfection. His sharp, dark eyes met yours, and in an instant, you felt like you were under a microscope, every nerve in your body flickering with uncertainty.

“Close the door,” he said, and the command in his tone sent a small shiver down your spine. You did as he asked, your fingers lingering on the doorknob for a split second longer than necessary, before you fully stepped into the room. The tension in your chest was almost unbearable.

“Dr. Xu,” you began, voice wavering despite your best efforts to sound confident. You forced yourself to meet his gaze, but it felt like an uphill battle. “If this is about the slip-up in the OR two days ago, I swear, it was Seungkwan who tripped me. He was being a menace, running around like he thought he was invincible—”

Minghao cut you off with a wave of his hand, pinching the bridge of his nose in mild frustration. “Y/N, no,” he muttered, his voice tinged with exasperation.

You blinked, suddenly flustered. “Oh, well, then it’s definitely about the forks,” you said quickly, the words tumbling out in a nervous rush. “I swear to you, I’m not the one stealing them from the cafeteria, it’s Chan. You should see his apartment—he has no cutlery at all, just a bunch of mismatched plastic spoons, and it’s disgusting—”

Minghao froze, his brow furrowing as he stared at you, completely unamused. “What the fuck? No, it’s not about fucking cutlery!” His tone was sharper than you expected, and it made your words falter in your throat.

You blinked, feeling the awkwardness settle in. “Okay, well, if it’s not that, it must be because I punched Mingyu last week—”

His eyebrows shot up, clearly taken aback. “You PUNCHED a 4th year resident?”

“No—okay, no, I didn’t actually punch him,” you stammered, instantly regretting the words as they left your mouth. “I just… I lightly tapped him to make a point when he tried to steal my case last week.” You winced, realizing how much worse it sounded now. “Okay, well, maybe I did get a little carried away—”

Minghao pinched the bridge of his nose again, a soft groan escaping him. “Y/N, how do you get into these situations?” he asked, sounding exhausted in the most endearing way.

You ran your fingers through your hair in frustration. “Okay, fine, fine,” you sighed dramatically. “Then it must be about the time Seokmin—”

“Will you just shut up for a moment so I can say something nice to you?” Minghao interrupted, his voice finally breaking through the chaos in your head. His words were sharp but not unkind, and for a moment, you were so stunned that your mouth hung open in shock.

You blinked, your mind racing. “Really? All of that for nothing?” you asked, your voice almost too quiet.

Minghao let out a long, exasperated breath. The tension in his shoulders finally relaxed, and his expression softened, his usual sharp gaze melting into something warmer. “I called you in because you did a great job today. The case with 502B? You got the diagnosis I missed. That was impressive.”

Your breath hitched, and you felt the flush of relief rush through your body. You blinked, still processing the words. “Oh,” you said, the confusion still lingering in your tone. “I thought I was in trouble…”

“No, you’re not in trouble.” Minghao tilted his head slightly, giving you a small, almost shy smile. It was a rare sight, and for a moment, you forgot to breathe. “You’re doing great, Y/N. Better than I was at your stage, honestly.”

A wave of warmth washed over you, the tension in your chest unwinding like a tight coil. You smiled back, finally able to relax. “Thanks, Dr. Xu.”

“Minghao,” he corrected gently, his voice softer now, almost shy. The blush on his cheeks was subtle, but you noticed it. “And, uh, while I have you here…” He looked away for a brief moment, as though collecting his thoughts, before returning his gaze to you. “I was wondering if—well, when you’re not busy saving lives—you’d like to grab dinner with me sometime?”

For a moment, your brain short-circuited. You blinked, completely thrown off. “Wait, what?” you stammered, your heart beginning to race again. “Are you—are you asking me out?”

Minghao’s hand moved to the back of his neck, rubbing it in a nervous gesture. “Yeah,” he said with a sheepish chuckle. “I am. So, what do you think?”

Your heart skipped a beat, and despite the surge of excitement flooding through you, you couldn’t help but smile. “I’d love that,” you replied softly, the warmth creeping up your neck. You couldn't stop the blush that spread across your face, but Minghao's smile only made it worse.

He gave a small nod, his eyes twinkling. “Great. Now, get back to work before someone thinks I’m giving you special treatment.”
