Summary: 1920. London’s magical society is dying. Plague sweeps the streets and monsters lurk in shadowed alleyways. Amid hunting monsters and trying to establish himself in his father’s eyes, Loki finds himself thoroughly distracted by American millionaire scientist Tony Stark. And when he realizes Stark might hold the key to end Britain’s suffering, Odin tasks him with securing the engineer’s help. ** “Alright, alright, you got me,” Stark sounded exasperated, incapable of bearing the silence. “I will do one business meeting – as in the number one, a singular meeting – in exchange for dinner. Look at me, do you want me on my knees, begging? I just really want to pick your brain.” “Wednesday,” Loki said automatically. “Eleven. Bor & Sons offices.” “Done,” Stark said with a grimace. “Dinner on Friday, and I get to pick the place!” Loki blinked at the mild chaos that Stark left in his wake and found that he hadn’t agreed to dinner, at all.

Just a heads up a user named decaffeinatedmentalityduck copy and pasted your post “megaphone” post into a gwynriel and anti elriel user name freyjas-musings ask so they can mock and make fun of it.
oh lmao isn’t that rich. especially when I’ve always tried to be nothing but polite with 99% of my content and always tag my posts correctly…guess my megaphone post hit a nerve for someone tho
troll behavior is so weird. and it really needs to stop because 1) gwynriels and eluciens both deserve to have peace within their side of the fandom and the constant spamming of their inboxes is not cool and 2) we Elriels also deserve to post what we want, when we want, and not have to worry about our posts being used as spam hate.
thanks for the heads up tho, nonnie.

Been wanting to scream about this for a while now, figured now is a good as ever time to do so.
So Gundam: Witch From Mercury really leans heavily into the whole witches and witchcraft theme, which is interesting for a sci-fi show. Not to say that they don't do it gloriously tho and in this post I will be pointing towards some of the symbolism that I noticed in the show.
The series starts with the first witch we see inside a Gundam Mobile Suit, none other then our dearest Elnora Samaya, also now known as Prospera Mercury. During the prologue, before anything else, we see her and once she exists the dark of the cockpit its revealed that she has fiery, blood red hair.
(Source: prologue G-witch)
Historically, witchcraft has been associated with red heads because of the many prejeduces against them. Red heads are a minority who have been associated with a lot interesting figure, from Judas who betrayed Jesus to the depictions of Lilith. This has given redheads a negative connotations in the Western World.
Next we see that the head researcher leading this project on GUND-format is also a woman, an older woman at that. Dr Cardo Nabo is the visionary leading this project, dedicated to the cause of making the GUND-format work in conjunction with humanity, in order to improve their lives and perserve their future. She knows that humanity, if it wishes to expand further into space and continuenits next steps into exploration and living outside of Earth, will need technology in order to aid their bodies in order to survive and thrive.
Older women involved in a form of medicine is an other motif in witchcraft and witch stereotypes. Witches were often involved in medicine and care. Cardo is the italian way of refering to a thistle, a purple green prickly flower that was said tp have medicinal properties in the middle ages.
(Source: Prologue G-witch)
During this prologue and later in the show it is revealed that the reason why the Vanadis Institute, of which Dr. Nabo was the head of, was doing resesrch into the GUND-format in conjunction with Mobile Suits because that was the primary way to get access to money for further research. Military funding through Ochs-Earth, an Earthian military company, would allow the Institute to further their goals and to show the viability of the GUND-format.
However, they encountered difficulties during their research. Mobile Suits are far larger and more difficult to control then prostethic limbs. The higher the permet score used by an individual to control more of the suit, the more the chance of death grows. Anything higher then score 3 caused deaths to the user because of, presumably, a data overload caused by the Permet link.
This caused a lot of ethical debates and strife, presumably, where the GUND-format was cast into a dangerous and even inhuman light because of its potential to not just kill others but also the users themselves. This led to the eventual forceful suspension of the project by the council, during which Cathedra used the Dominicus Forces to attack and kill all those present on Fólkvangr, the asteroid where the Vanadis Institute was located. Those present on Fólkvangr were both staff of the institute as well as their family. Everyone who was involved or related to the development of the GUND-format were killed in what is essentially a witch hunt.
Fólkvangr is an other reference to witchcraft, as in Norse Mythology this is a heavenly field in the afterlife ruled over by Freyja, a goddess of many things including magic (to see and influence the future). An other name for Freyja is Vanadís. Once again, this is a reference to paganism and witchcraft within the G-Witch universe thats quite obvious. Ochs also may or may not be a reference to the Old English word for "Oak" (not too sure about that one), if this is indeed true then this may be a reference to Thor, god of Thunder and Lightening as well as a warrior. I considered connecting oaks to Yggdrasil, the world tree, but that is an Ash tree, not an oak.
During the discussion in which the Mobile Suit council werebdeciding the fate of further development of Gundam Mobile Suits, Delling came forth and said that they had to "Wield the hammer of witches" in order to put a stop to the development of Gundams. The "hammer of the witches" is a reference to the Malleus Maleficarum, a 15th century guide on hunting and persecuting witches.
During his speech at the conference, he also calls the fact that gundams kill not only other soldiers but also their wielders a curse, once again a reference to witches. Prior to saying this he also says however that humans should kill humans, instead of humans being killed by just technology (really simplifying this) but essentially what he is saying is that the Gundams killing their wielders is unnatural and goes against the normal way of things.
(Source: Prologue G-witch)
The irony of this is also the name of these organisations. Cathedra is a literal reference to the throne upon which a bishop sits, Dominicus means "of the Lord/Lord's". Both are a reference towards christianity and its opposition to both withcraft and paganism.
Now we have established whom exactly this show calls "Witches", these are the people involved in the manufacturing, research, development and piloting of the GUND-format and Mobile Suits using said format, be it for medicinal or war uses. If you are associated or sympathize with the use of this technology, you are considered "a witch".
Putting this into context, we can now also look at the name "Witch From Mercury". Who does this refer to? I've seen people argue that this might be Aerial or Prospera, but I sincerely disagree. As of the knowledge we have come to learn of in both the short novel as well as everything from episode 16/season 2 episode 4 onwards, we can assume that Suletta was the only one actually raised on Mercury and who feels any connection to the planet at all. Suletta, as both a pilot of a Mobile Suit using the GUND-format as well as the daughter of a witch (Elnora/Prospera), is a witch.
(Source: G-witch teaser announcement)
Now onto my FAVOURITE part: the 2nd ED Red Birthmark. Oh boi this baby has some of the more blatant witch references, I absolutely love it ngl. Starting with the name itself, historically one of the methods to hunt for witches was to check for birthmarks/skin marks. Having strange birthmarkings or an insensitive patch of skin was basically proof enough of you being a witch, again a part of the witch hunt theme.
The song, which I am convinced is from Miorine's perspective (tho maybe/perhaps Aerial, tho thats a small maybe), makes references to seeing into the future, not liking whats in it and changing destiny yourself. Once again, these are themes of clairvoyance, the sort of magic Freyja is associated with (aka Vanadís). Witches were often said to be able to look into the future and change things as well.
Next we have the visual parts if the ED. I'm sure we all ate utterly in love with.
youtube
From 0:44 to 1:00 we have this beautiful sequence of Suletta dancing and conducting GUN-bits.
First Suletta creates a stylized version of the Triple Goddess Symbol, a well known pagan icon amongst both witchcraft practitioners as well as wiccans. The symbol contains 3 moons in different phases; waxing, full and waning. The symbol represents the 3 phases of the goddess; the maiden, the mother and the crone. This is both the life lifecycle of a girl as well as the eay that wisdom is often bestowed upon a person, from the elderly to the adults to the children. You could even argue that this could represent Dr. Nabo, Elnora/Prospera and Suletta.
(Source: G-witch 2nd ED)
Following this we have 5 Suletta's dancing together in which one can assume is a circle dance. Circle dances bave historically been associated with both witches, pagans and cultists. Something ritualistic.
Anyway I'm tired now but there are like way more witchcraft references in the whole show that I can't get into right now cause I'm tired lmao. Anyway have fun with the above, peace.

Heathenry UPG
LONG post, if you’re not interested in my spiritual ramblings move along
I was having some reflections on my walk in the woods the other day and I know I neeed to record myself when I do and put it to paper but here’s some of it
Metaphor
to preface, (and all of these are my personal interpretations and upg) I see much of the eddas as metaphors, with the aesir representing patriarchal society, vanir-matriarchal, and the jotun as the (majority female) forces of nature. the aesir-vanir war represent the original patriarchal invasions against matriarchal societies. the aesir’s constant battles against the jotnar represent man’s constant struggle to conquer and subdue nature. ragnarok represents nature eventually overtaking and destroying humankind (which I think is fair. the planet was here long before our species and will be long after, and the existence of our species is a blink of an eye on a cosmic scale, let alone the existence of civilization, let alone patriarchal civilization). if you really wanna get esoteric with it, surtr’s fire could represent the sun going red giant and consuming the earth itself.
further, odin and loki represent much of men’s attempts to usurp female-only spiritual and magical practices (this we do have historical documentation of - piggybacking off of what I’ve learned from marija gimbutas and merlin stone), though from two different strata of male society.
Odin and Magic
odin is the “upper class” male - he attempts to usurp female power by “marrying” matriarchal leaders or priestesses (often one in the same) (frigg, often theorized to be cognate with freyja - both are magic users) to gain legitimacy. he is supposedly the only male who can practice seidr (a female-only magical practice) without being ergi (this doesn’t somehow make him a “genderfluid” or “q***r” figure btw, but shows an attempt to usurp female power). it’s notably that even though he can supposedly perform seidr, he still needs to employ the services of a volva to achieve what he cannot. he attempts to learn magic by mimicking a female-only experience, by “hanging” (often interpreted as from a noose, though this isn’t directly attested - represents the umbilical cord) from the world tree for nine days and nights (the nine months of pregnancy). in doing this he misses the forest for the trees. while women have dominion over both life and (regenerative) death, men can only exert control over life through (destructive, non-regenerative) death.
because of this, galdr is interpreted to be a more masculine form of magic, more appropriate for men to practice, though we know odin isn’t the only one with knowledge of the runes (disclaimer - I know galdr means chanting/singing, but is often associated w the runes). in sigrdrifumal, we know the valkyrie sigrdrifa has similar knowledge of the runes that we hear in the havamal. this has been attributed to the valkyries “serving” odin, but it’s more likely that they serve freyja, leader of the valkyries, and come to knowledge of the runes/magic through her. I posit that she first came to knowledge of the runes through the primordial norns, who sit at the base/beneath a root of the world tree and either spin or carve humans’ fates (I theorize they first made the runes from the branches or roots of the tree at urd’s well (wells and bodies of water have a long history of womb symbolism)), likely through a similar process that odin tried to mimic - when she was born, or first gave birth (I’m more inclined to the former; this puts the norns in a sort of “fairy godmothers” position, and puts less emphasis on women needing to give birth in order to access magic; we are able to do so through our femaleness alone).
this doesn’t even touch on the story of his theft of the mead of poetry (both brewing and honey/bees long associated with women) from gunnlod, and the (imo) rape metaphor in that story. odin’s “knowledge” of the runes, whether stolen, made up, or as a patriarchal write-in to begin with, is both illegitimate and not unique.
Loki
loki also represents a male attempt to usurp female-only spiritual and magical practices, though from a different societal strata than odin. he represents the “lower class” male - his attempts come more through subterfuge and female mimicry than through odin’s methods of “marriage” and domination. he is jotun, not aesir, after all, though I hold him separate from the other jotun in their symbology as forces of nature. he also attempts to do so my mimicking female-only or female-majority experiences; transformation/shape shifting, which goddesses like freyja are able to do regularly. shapeshifting has a long history of association with goddesses and female figures, and I theorize that this is because our bodies change regularly, all the time, throughout our cycle, to say nothing of the radical change your body undergoes during pregnancy. odin is also known to shapeshift. loki needs to “borrow” (read: steal) objects of power from goddesses more than once; freyjas cloak, ran’s net.
in addition to shapeshifting, loki “gives birth” (once again, like with odin, this doesn’t make him some sort of genderfluid or q***r figure) not once but twice; once by transforming into a mare with svaldilfari, and once in hyndluljod in the prose edda by devouring a woman’s heart, if you take the prose edda into account. beastiality and cannibalism. like odin’s hanging, perversions of the practices they’re trying to mimic.
another piece of evidence of this attempted mimicry comes from, imo, skadi’s story. in it, loki attempts to make her laugh by tying his testicles to a goat. merlin stone has a great section in when god was a woman that goes into the pattern of castration myths. it could be that this is a softer patriarchal rewrite of loki’s outright castration by skadi (the goat is another female symbol - see the language of the goddess - though not as often in norse myth specifically), likely in punishment for any number of slights (his role in killer her father, his role in the kidnapping of another goddess, his sexism - see lokasenna, his attempts to usurp female practices). what’s interesting here is that in later times (post matriarchies), we see male priests in previously female-only or female-dominated goddess temples castrating themselves, which has also been interpreted as an attempt to mimic the priestesses (and postmodernly interpreted as a form of transgenderism). it’s notable that loki is punished again by skadi later on; she is the one that hangs the serpent over loki’s head to drip venom onto his face, serpents being another ancient goddess symbol.
Ragnarok
All of this to preface that I think it’s fitting that in Ragnarok, odin and thor are devoured by fenrir and jormungandr respectively. I could make a whole other post about the numerous reoccurrences of wolves and snakes throughout norse myth and their associations with female jotnar, and whole books have been written on the ancient female/goddess symbolism of the snake, though imo, less on the wolf, both of which have undergone shifts to being associated with men, masculinity and male “god”. to make a long story short, the wolf and serpent are a duality, the wolf representing death and the underworld, and the snake representing life and death, but particularly, the regenerative process of death.
odin is devoured by fenrir, the wolf, death. this is fitting given his fear of death and attempts to conquer it - the apples of idunn giving the aesir eternal youth. his fear of death is ironic, given common attestations as a “god of death” and a psychopomp, able to travel between the worlds (arguably something the volva can do via seidr). death is unavoidable and a part of life, but we see even today a strong human fear of death and frantic attempts to slow or obscure the process of aging. this fear is further bolstered by the fact that he takes half the dead slain in battle (war and conquest being strongly patriarchal) to live in his home in valholl (where they get to maintain their patriarchal power and status by being “served” by the valkyries) instead of helheim, where those who have died naturally go, presided over by a goddess.
thor is devoured by jormungandr, the world serpent. this is fitting given thor’s associations with both war and his constant battles with the jotnar. like I said before, I believe this symbolizes man’s constant struggle against the forces of nature and his attempts to subdue and conquer it. war, as previously stated, is a strongly patriarchal practice and relates to man’s only means of “control” over life - through death and slaughter, the kind that is not constructive or regenerative. conversely, the serpent represents both life and death and it’s cyclical nature, the shedding of its skin and rise from hibernation (or in reptiles’ case, brumation) to give birth to the new. thor is often said to be a “protector” of mankind, but it is jormungandr who encircles the earth and protects it. it is nature fighting back against man’s/thor’s attempts to subdue it. it’s also notable that thor is odin’s son, the next in his patriarchal line.
this isn’t even touching on originally goddess-centric symbols of storms and lightning, which thor takes on. storm and sky deities were some of the first to be changed from female to male in patriarchal times, though we see remnants of this in “lesser” female spirits like the valkyries and some jotnar (and in other mythologies).
Conclusion?
I guess there’s not really a conclusion to this, just some of how I interpret the myths and what they mean to me, and could have possibly meant pre- or post- patriarchy, what themes I see them reflect given my research. I could go into more of my reflections on the goddesses (particularly skadi, the norns, gullveig, angrboda, nerthus, sol, the valkyries), but this is already long enough and that’s a post for another day.
#ref#I swear to god I’ll write it all down in a more academic way w sources and references one day#hope this doesn’t break containment I don’t wanna debate upg with non-radical women tbh#all this to say I’m sick to death of the veneration of sexist male gods ESPECIALLY when they’re fandomized and q***rified#devour the patriarchs and let nature heal

I'll do the startling thing I'll have the knife in my teeth I'll be the star You can be the horrified one.

A Fierce Reminder
When the self-loathing starts to set in And my heart cannot carry the weight, May you grant me the strength, Lady of Battle, To slay these thoughts and bury them for good. When they say that I am weird and weak, Not worthy of the right to breathe, May you arm and train me, Warrior Queen, To send my enemies to the Burial Mound. May I remember your comforting words, Lady Freyja, That I am a worthy and powerful warrior, And that no imposter will claim my victory. With these words, Fierce Freyja, you will be hailed!

we keep quiet, cause we're dead if they knew
(aka the one where loki finds out about freyja and fandral.)
taglist: @ocappreciation @arrthurpendragon @notaboutcat @noratilney (lmk if you want to be added/removed!)
Freyja knows the garden maze like the back of her hand. Every step through it is intuitive, every flower and thorn and blade of grass feels like a part of herself. She's grown up in the weeds–even when her brothers outgrew their games of hide and seek, she has always found solace in the solitude of the maze. Maybe because she was never quite allowed to train in combat the way they were, she had to find ways to occupy herself somewhere. Her familiarity of it has been hard-won, minute by minute, day by day, every footstep creating more muscle memory.
So of course, when she began this…whatever it is, with Fandral, the maze was where she brought him. She knows the quiet places, the turns nobody ever takes but her. She knows where they won't be found.
Their trysts are not always physical; sometimes they just talk for hours, or just enjoy each other’s company in the silence.
This is not one of these nights.
Freyja knows that her body is political territory; she has been acutely aware of it for centuries. As a seidr, as a daughter of Fensalir, her indiscretions will not be politely ignored the way that of her brothers are. (Loki, as a magic user, is on thin ice himself). After all, there's a reason she and Fandral are relegated to stolen moments in hiding spots. If House Valdi learned their heir was cavorting with her, the stability of the realm could be in danger of succumbing to a second civil war.
It's an objective her father instilled in her from birth: the cold civil war Asgard has harbored since Odin married a Seidr from Fensalir cannot, under any circumstances, be allowed to thaw. Freyja was born the emblem of a union that nearly split the realm, and it now falls to her to hold it together.
All of this to say: Freyja is already playing with fire in a powder keg. Having sex with Fandral anywhere, but particularly outside in the garden, would be a de facto declaration of war if word got out.
It doesn't mean that some nights, she's not tempted. It doesn't mean that some nights, part of her thinks it might be worth it.
The further his lips drift down her neck, the closer their bodies press together, the further the concept of diplomacy flies from her mind, replaced by the desire, the need to know what Fandral looks like undressed and on his knees before her–
“Ahem.”
The problem, of course, is that Loki knows the garden maze nearly as well as she does.
Fandral all but jumps away from her, at the other side of the corridor from her in less than a moment, and he’s all movement, straightening his clothes, changing his posture, like he thinks if he looks casual enough, it’ll rewind the clock. Freyja turns to her brother, standing at the junction at the end of the corridor, face impassive but eyes unbearably amused.
I will never hear the end of this.
“Sorry to interrupt,” Loki says sarcastically.
“You’re forgiven,” Fandral replies, equally sarcastic, and she doesn’t need to look at him to know that he regrets it instantly. She pinches the bridge of her nose.
“And you’re dismissed,” Loki replies easily. “I need a word with my sister.”
Fandral looks to her for instruction. She nods. He leaves, and she can see in his posture that he’s making a point of not walking any faster than he ordinarily does; it is taking extra effort for him to not look like he is actively trying to escape the situation. A pang of fondness hits her; she bites her lip to keep from smiling.
Loki watches Fandral carefully as he leaves, his eyes following him until several moments after he’s left Freyja’s line of sight, and then he turns his gaze on Freyja. A staring contest ensues as she waits for him to say the first word.
“Apologies for the interruption, again, little sister,” he says finally, smiling. It’s that smile he uses whenever his sixth sense for mayhem lights up.
“Why are you here, Loki?” she asks, exasperated.
“Mother wanted to speak to you about the coronation and asked me to find you. She told me you’d been spending a lot of time in the labyrinth lately.” He grins. “I don’t suppose she knows why.”
Freyja sighs, walking to his end of the corridor to meet him. “No one knows, and if you know what’s good for your health, you’ll keep it that way.”
“Good for my health? Or yours?”
“All of ours,” she says, indulging his hypothetical for the lack of anything else to say. “Yours, mine, his, everyone’s. You should be furious with me right now.”
“Furious? I’m proud.” He slings an arm around her and starts walking her out. “My little sister has grown up and started reaching important milestones, like compromising realm stability. Soon you’ll be committing your first treason.”
She rolls her eyes. “I feel like what I’m doing counts as de facto treason, actually.”
“There’s the spirit.” He grins down at her. “Honestly, Freyja, I wasn’t certain you had that capacity.”
“I’m the goddess of love, Loki,” she says flatly.
He rolls his eyes, looking mildly disgusted. “Not that. I mean, I didn’t know you had that kind of capacity for chaos. This is a tinderbox, you realize.”
“Oh, is it?” she says. “I hadn’t realized, thank you so much for your guidance.”
“I mean, really,” he continues, just to be annoying. “The potential for this to go wrong for you, him, and everyone else we know is truly astounding. The scope of the damage this could do is immeasurable. It usually takes me decades to put together something of that magnitude.” He pauses. “Have you been at this for decades?” He shakes his head at himself. “No, of course not. I would’ve figured it out sooner.”
“You’re enjoying this a little too much.”
“If you didn’t want me to, you were welcome to involve yourself with any other member of nobility. There’s no shortage of suitors for the princess of Asgard, you realize.” “No, I hadn’t noticed that either, thank you.” She pauses, grabbing his arm so that he does, too, and he turns to face her.
“This isn’t a jest, Loki. I need to know that you’ll be discreet about this,” she says. “There are lives at stake.” She always hates to acknowledge that part; it’s one thing to think that it could cause a war. It’s another to acknowledge what war entails. When she does, the overwhelming selfishness of her actions hits her like a wave.
But she can’t ignore the potential ramifications of her actions and then ask Loki not to.
“As loathsome as Lord Valdi, I don’t think he’ll risk another war over a single indiscretion, Little One.”
Freyja stares at him. “Right. About that…”
His eyebrows raise. “This…isn’t a single indiscretion, though,” he realizes out loud.
“No.”
He studies her for a long moment, and there’s something new in his eyes–he’s looking at her like he’s never seen her before, like this is a facet of her that he hadn’t anticipated.
“Do you love him?” he asks finally, seriously.
“Yes,” she says, and for all the wrestling she’s done with the question in her mind and soul, she’s surprised at how easily the confirmation rolls off her tongue.
“Is he good to you?”
She can’t help but smile at that, just a little–both at her brother’s concern, and at the thoughts it conjures of the man she loves. “The best.”
He nods. “Very well. Your secret is safe with me.”
Her shoulders relax. “Thank you.”
“You’ve certainly kept enough secrets for me over the centuries; it’s only fair.” With that, he slings his arm back around her and starts guiding her back to the palace again.
“I will have to threaten to end his life should he damage your heart in any way, of course,” he adds.
“Please refrain from doing that, actually.”
“I will not.”
