The reason why social media has gotten so much worse recently (reddits recent fuck-up, everything on Twitter since Musk, FB being FB, Tumblrs various attempts at expanding profitability recently) is because it is no longer possible to exist as a company by fencing in large parts of our social life and having investment money pump in on the basis of expected future value of that amount of information when it suddenly costs money to loan money due to suddenly high interest rates after the inflationary crisis of the last year, which has made the current model of the Internet that has existed for the last about 10 years completely unsustainable. All of them need to become profitable or die, and they are learning very quickly that that just isn't possible no matter how much of the life and information of the users one steals. We are witnessing the death-throes of Web2.0, and what comes after is as yet unclear.

Man, I miss the internet when you could just freely browse all sorts of niche blogs and fan sites without having to have an account anywhere... There was so much to explore! Now you need to have an account with Instagram and Tiktok before they'll let you see anything, or it's locked behind a paywall on someone's Patreon.

We used to "browse," like we were wandering free in a big pasture, and now it's a "feed," where someone keeps shoveling stuff into a trough in front of your face and you have to keep choking it down.

I miss "Free Range" internet is what I'm saying, I guess. Not this Content Factory Farming crap.

If I click “Subscribe” to an author on AO3, they’re basically stuck with me forever. Like there are at least two people who I haven’t shared a fandom with in about 5 years, yet I squeal when I get an email notification from them. Sometimes our interests end up aligning again but most of the time it’s just a little reminder that people I love are out there creating.

Ao3's bookmark search function is a really cool way to find new fics based off what other readers have said about them, but recently more and more of these have filled the search and made it pretty hard to wade through. :')

Hi everyone! I hit 2000 user subscriptions on AO3 today and thought about what I could do to commemorate. I'm pretty terrible at writing on command, honestly, BUT! 💪 My ask box is open, so: If there is a sequel to any of my stories that you want to see, please submit a request in my ask box. The story with the most requests will receive a sequel. I will stop accepting submissions in 1 week from today, so please get in there if there's something you really want to read.

So I'm pretty sure my ao3 account got hacked lmao - good news is that I worked it out in time, but bad news is I've basically had to delete my old account and start a new one. This shouldn't actually impact anything on your guy's end - I managed to transfer all of my fics to my new account (which has the same username, timeofjuly), but if you were subscribed to me as a user, you'll need to re-subscribe. It also means that all of the comments I've left and replied to will now say Account Deleted, which kills me on the inside, and I've lost all of my bookmarks and all the works I was subscribed to, but what can you do. If you wanna re-subscribe to me as a user (my story and series subs aren't impacted, so if you're just into RTC you should be fine), you can do that here.
