i feel like at some point everyone just started making hope and lyall out to be bad parents and idk if i like or agree with that. how do you think they were as parents to remus??
OKAY SO I AM SO PASSIONATELY AGAINST THIS RHETORIC. it is me and holyall against the worls od fanfics that characterise them as bad parents.
they were the good parents. and sure they had their flaws, but all parents do.
i think remus grew up in north wales, probably somewhere near llandudno but not actually in the town. hope worked as a teacher part-time in one of the local secondary schools and if remus hadn’t been accepted into hogwarts, she would’ve probably ended up being his english teacher. every friday remus would come home from primary school to freshly baked challah that hope would bake for each shabbos and every sunday she’d make french toast with the left over challah for breakfast (challah french toast is superior). lyall did his best too, he would take remus to the park whenever remus asked, would let him stay up to watch tv or listen to music, and the two of them did their best to spoil him with the little money they did have, although they were quite tight most of the time.
they’d go on camping holidays where they’d hike and swim and have a camp fire. hope is the driver of the family and refuses to use magic to travel anywhere, and lyall agrees every time. they’re constantly listening to music in the car together, the three of them adore music, they’re always singing and messing around with goofy impressions of whoever the singer of the song they’re listening to is.
after full moons, hope would always make remus chicken broth and lyall would do his best to heal remus’ wounds with magic (although he was never the best with medical spells) and they’d do everything they could to make remus feel safe, loved, and secure although lyall’s guilt would be eating him alive every time the full moon happened.
as remus got older and wanted more independence, they started to clash a bit, they were always protective of him after greyback bit him, but they always eventually work through whatever shit they have going on this time. and when remus realises he’s gay, he’s still worried about them not supporting him but they only care for his happiness, not whether or not he’s with a girl or boy

16/06/2023-Great Orme and Llandudno for a trip on the cable cars, Llanberis for a trip up Yr Wyddfa on the Snowdon Mountain railway and Llanbadrig to look at Ynys Badrig aka Middle Mouse
Pictures taken in this set: 1. Viper’s-bugloss at Great Orme in a garden area which was pretty to see. 2. Beautiful panoramic view from the Great Orme. It was so good to enjoy and be immersed in this on the cable cars you can see for miles including back down to Puffin Island where we were the other day. 3. Ravens on the Great Orme. 4 and 5. Views at Yr Wyddfa, wonderful to have this consuming and stunning experience taking in the breathtaking mountainous views again. It was special. 6. Heath bedstraw it was nice to see at Yr Wyddfa. 7 and 8. More sensational views of the sun going down over the water at Llanbadrig, it was so peaceful to be here in the evening late in the holiday a great pretty spot with the church too. 9. Chough at Great Orme, this species that has been one of our birds of the holiday was something of a surprise for us here, it was exceptional to hear their charming calls once more and see a couple. The one in the photo possibly a youngster too. 10. A Common Grayling at the Great Orme that I was astounded to see, my first of the year and this is by far the earliest sighting I’ve ever got of one the first time I’ve seen the species in June in fact. This is a species I don’t even think of until July on the New Forest heaths at home. It was brilliant to watch a few of these camouflage artists flitting through the grass, a euphoric moment to see my 32nd butterfly species of the year. Thanks to me being reminded of their sub-species something I read about before by someone I know on Twitter it seems the early sighting could be explained by them being the Hipparchia semele subspecies which is found only on the Orme as they do emerge sooner. This is pretty cool if so.
Other highlights at the Great Orme were Small Heath, Meadow Brown, Meadow Pipit, Swallow and Goldfinch, with striking Wheatears seen very nicely joyous moments, Skylark, Goldfinch and Speckled Wood seen going up Yr Wyddfa.  Also on the brief look at Llanbadrig looking across to Ynys Badrig tonight it was good to see of course Gannet Middle Mouse where they have historically begun nesting which I first heard about in the Iolo’s Anglesey series last year so I was thrilled to see this, Guillemot, Cormorant, Oystercatcher, Swallow, Manx Shearwater, possible Razorbill, Black Guillemot and Chough and also Sandwich Tern. It was soothing to hear the wails of the seabirds on the island, a key and beautiful sound this week. It was great to see Grey Heron on a chip shop stop at the wonderful Betws-y-Coed with Swallow seen going through Eryri again. Newt in a pond and the famous town invading during lockdown Kashmiri Goats were nice to see at the Great Orme and other plant highlights there were scarlet pimpernel, hawksbeard, common rock-rose and water lily. Foxgloves, tormentil and cotton grass in good numbers were good to see up Yr Wyddfa and thrift, sea plantain and white clover were nice to see at Llanbadrig. Lady’s bedstraw and thyme were nice to see at both Great Orme and Llanbadrig.

Part 3: Dion Fortune:  Sea Priestess of Avalon
Astro-Biographical Details.
Her actual  name was Violet Mary Firth. She was born in Llandudno in North Wales, but the Frith family were from Sheffield. They were involved in Hydrotherapy and her mother was a Christian Scientist so already adept at using thought forms and spiritual healing. Her parents would attend her meditation groups.
While she radiated practical wisdom- that of a Pallas Athene -which for her is in Sagittarius conjunct her Mercury which is very apt since she wrote so much. Pallas is the strategist and independent woman who has a way with words. She said “Experience is a very good teacher even though her lessons are very expensive.” It’s not Jupiter that ranks as the final dispositor of her chart, but it is Venus, which is also her chart ruler as Libra is on the Ascendant. Here it is best to view  to Vivien Le Fay Morgan, the character in her novels based on Arthurian legend, as the mouthpiece for Fortune and this mysterious woman she claims as an adept has ‘ageless beauty.’ She gives away many clues as to her real life personality in the novels which make good reading for that purpose alone.
With the Sagittarian sun sign, there is a lot of plain speaking about tricky subjects in her non-fiction work. The reason she is so valued today is that she could write about highly complex topics and make them easy to understand; she brought higher knowledge down to earth. In the novels she revealed in practice what is theoretical only in books such as ‘The Mystical Qabbalah’. She could however be bombastic and did not tolerate mystification for its own sake, but advocated for revealing the secrets of the ages. This garnered her several enemies whose cover was blown by this resolute attitude.
Furthermore, she did not indulge of the tricky rhetoric that Crowley- the Libran- was famous for- she just revealed her knowledge as if talking to a friend and taking you into her confidence. His Mercury was in Scorpio, so more twisted with satire; and hers was in Sagittarius more uplifted yet to the point. Still while reading her she seems coy and could have said more. But the hints even at sex magic are all there, but they are still ‘hints’ and you have to read through the lines of the novels carefully.  That’s part of the appeal of a Sagittarian sun sign-  you are getting the unvarnished truth, but with a wise old owl nodding and winking at you. Their ability to connect all the strands of wisdom together into a synthesis is remarkable.
Her books are still in high demand and for those who don’t like tomes full of technical vocabulary, her novels can trigger the very altered states she utilised to see visions. This may have been intentional. The reader can be subtly lead into a trance quite easily. She transitions from the concrete 3D reality, into dream imagery, and to conscious thought forms on the astral and etheric levels as she does in the opening chapters of Moon Magic (1938). She does this as if casually switching gears in a high speed car. She knew her stuff and this comes through in her work. The novels may not be regarded as having literary qualities, but they are not without merit, and in tone, similar in tone to the work of Iris Murdoch.
What set her apart was that she claimed an ‘inborn’ knowledge. She had inner intuition and heightened states of mind. She advocated that everyone should find their own inner ascended masters. She didn’t need any ‘lodge’ to validate her level or to ‘initiate’ her. Her South Node was conjunct the Sun. This points to the fact that she came in to this incarnation with prior experience of being a priestess of the old gods.  This same degree is that of the Great Attractor. This gave her the impetus in 1919 to join what was then remnants of the original Golden Dawn. This was no longer the Golden Dawn of 20 years previously. This was in the early 1920 so not the same lodge to which Crowley and W.B. Yeats had belonged. That one disbanded but it was still being run by Moina Mathers, a Swiss-Irish artist and astrologer and the wife of MacGregor Mathers. She founded the Alpha and Omega order. It used the same material drawn from Hermetic mysteries as the Golden Dawn so it was a continuation.
In the Sea Priestess she states plainly also that “all women are Isis” in the highest sense, if they are aware of that, but that Fortune herself is the representative of “the cult of the black Isis” and a whole lot darker than people realise having rule over death as well as birth and similar to the worship of Kali in India. Isis reassembled her partner Osiris including the missing genital part cut off by his brother Seth. The original temple for the Golden Dawn was that of Isis-Urania. Isis of the depths of nature and Urania the muse of astronomy-astrology.
Why the Moon is so important for her was that her Lot of Spirit – her Daemon if you will- was at 26° of Cancer, ruled by the Moon. So her many promptings to make moves in her life come from the tidal shifts of lunar inspiration.
“I am that soundless, boundless, bitter sea. All tides are mine, and answer unto me. Tides of the airs, tides of the inner earth; The secret, silent tides of death and birth. Tides of men’s souls, and dreams, and destiny – Isis Veiled, and Ea, Binah, Ge.”
Fortune exemplified the themes of a Libra Ascendant by marrying a man she involved in her rituals and taking that marriage seriously although some commented that the husband,  Penry Evans, allowed her to do all the talking.  But also that she wrote a book called The Esoteric Philosophy of Love and Marriage. Here it is achieving balance between inner masculine and feminine and she said that a man and a woman, when doing astral work together become soul mates as they would have synthesised their anima/animus.
Her Moon is also in Libra, and normally this is the pacifier, the people pleaser, good at settling disputes in marriage and in love, or in business contracts, and though it was noted by Israel Regardie that she ‘henpecked’ her husband in group sessions, she probably appeased and compromised with him as she did not find relationships very easy. She apparently allowed him to cheat, though it is not known if she also did that. Perhaps that it was at 0° Libra that meant she was an ingenue in relationships with such a lot to learn and put into practice. But the search is always for perfect equilibrium. This degree is also significant because it is one of the four world axis points so it is powerful in its own right as it represents the Equinox- hours of equal day and night.
And even the degree of her Sun seems to indicate she came from some lofty goddess realm -Diana of the hunt- with that Venus in Sagittarius- having an authority that comes from roaming the wild forests.  At 13° of Sagittarius the Sabian symbol for her Sun reads  Sphinx and Pyramids stand, remains of a glorious past. This is on her South Node when she talked a lot about past lives. For her to be Sphinx and revive the worship of black Isis was a natural position for her to adopt.
Tumblr media
She was one of the Pluto-Neptune conjunction generation. These two planets only come together every 500 years but early that decade they were dancing together in Gemini. The previous time Pluto and Neptune were in Gemini was at the beginning of the Renaissance- itself a resurgence and rediscovery of hidden knowledge. Others born in this decade were Osbert Sitwell (1892) and  Robert Graves (1895) who wrote ‘the White Goddess’ a tribute to moon rites in ancient Greece. It was also known as the ‘mauve’ decade where Symbolist artists incorporated decadent and taboo themes such as demon possession in their work, and the turn-of-the- century madness where cult-like behaviour comes to the fore. coming to the fore. It was the decade in which Oscar Wilde had his heady rise and fall from grace, and it was the decade in which dark themes of  split personality and self transformation appeared in literature – very appropriate for the conjunction appearing in Gemini- such as Picture of Dorian Gray, Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and of course at the end of the decade Bram Stoker‘s Dracula. We get a sense of these psychic transformations Fortune’s novels written mostly in the 1930s.
So to have this conjunction in the natal chart exerts a powerful influence towards the combination of spiritual and therapeutic modalities of any kind. These profound levels of psychism continued even after her death when her amanuensis Margret Lumley Brown who worked aside Fortune while she was alive, was said to have still been in communication with her to complete unfinished works especially Moon Magic. This was said partially to have come through automatic writing. Lumley was a fellow Sagittarian born December 7th, 1886.
4: Mars and Jupiter in Aquarius in the 5th
There are no planets in water signs, they are mainly in Air, Fire and Earth signs. There is a grand trine in Air from Jupiter in Aquarius, Pluto-Neptune-North Node in Gemini and the Ascendant in Libra. This points to her intellectual gifts and the ability to play with ideas with ease. She tried hard to understand feelings but her primary interest was in psychology was well known as she became a lay psychiatrist. She made the mind her number one subject but quickly saw that even Freud’s delineation of the subconscious pulling the strings of the conscious mind was not enough to explain how two minds can converge, so she focussed on the western mystery tradition. But even then when discussing occult practices she gave them a psychological flavour by using terms from psychology.
Jupiter would give full flight to creative ideas in Aquarius in the fifth underlining her ability to communicate and join groups. Mars there would give a lot of drive to become the leader, but also make her a tad contentious in any group. She was not averse to any dispute and could fight like the best- Sagittarians have a fiery nature- about what was right according to her. One such fight was in the Christian Mystic branch of the Theosophical Society around 1930 where the members ganged against her for her insistence on Western practices when they preferred ideas sourced from the Vedas as per Blavatsky.  So she was obliged to branch out on her own, something she often did. Another was her famous fight with Moina Mathers ousting from the lodge of the Alpha and Omega of the Stella Matutina pushing her to found her own group which was the Society of Inner Light- still in existence. Mathers claimed that Fortune had revealed too many of the inner secrets of the order. But Fortune said she could not possibly have known since she had not been initiated to that high a grade- she just knew it anyway. So they parted ways. Mathers’ Saturn was at 29° of Libra exactly on Fortune’s Uranus- so the fight was a clash of epic proportions with flashes of heightened electricity. Fated elements were also involved as Mathers’ North Node is close by at 2°of Scorpio adding to the intensity of that clash. To add to the mix Fortune’s North Node in at 14° Gemini is conjunct  Mathers’ Mars at 15°  Gemini.
With both Mars and Jupiter are in the 5th House of Aquarius she had that drive to create running numerous projects simultaneously with business-like precision, but always insisting on high standards. She loathed idle volunteers who whimsically floated in and out of her group meetings and expected equal respect. She sent them packing. And Jupiter probably gave each of her pet projects total lift off. Even an early book of poems she wrote garnered attention and her early novels received reviews in the mainstream press at a time when no one was obliged to pay her any attention as she was an unknown. She wrote them couched in ordinary romance terms- almost genre style yet they are much more than that.
What also lifts these energies towards the creative side are these supportive sextiles she has from the Sagittarian placements in the third house of communication. Venus-the Sun in Sagittarius are sextile to Jupiter at 9° of Aquarius; and Mercury at  24° of Sagittarius is sextile to Mars at 21° of Aquarius so in any  war of words with Fortune, we might  pity the opponents. Fire and Air go well together as air feeds fire. She could proselytise for her unusual ideas with ease and people said they followed her because she imposed her will, but because she had an authority that people naturally believed. But she had the skill to put all this into words. The most forceful expression of this martial style persuasion is contained in Psychic Self Defence which is a manual of the Kung Fu/Ju Jitsu of the mind.

Jul 31, 2023  LLANDUDNO   Cable tramways - or in North America, cable cars - were once common in cities across the United States. But famously, San Francisco is the only American city that still operates them today. Less famously, the United Kingdom used to have cable tramways too. And one of them still survives! But why did all the others die out? I went to the Welsh San Francisco to find out more...

Cocoon
part ii.
But that was all the Before. You were now in the After.
The crepitating silence of time resonated in the streets like 200 year old floorboards under heavy boots. All of the joy you once felt evaporated; your memories floating around like specters, tokens of a life now past. Some days it felt like a hallucination, your life now so foreign it was as if you were watching it from the outside, hovering above yourself with the rest of your happy memories sulking around town like wraiths. Haunting yourself. It seemed as though everything you once knew had evacuated; disappeared without a trace. What remained wandered around like a lost dog, homeless and hopeless. When you got the overwhelming feeling that this was just a dream, and you would wake up next to Van, you flicked the inside of your wrist to bring you back to reality. This was real. This was happening. You were here. Van was not.
Not even a year ago you were chasing each other about, skipping over broken glass and laughing at everything.
Days passed the way the trees shed their leaves in autumn: slowly, then suddenly. You started to get out of bed more; even getting a job doing freelance copywriting and editing online. It took your mind out of the guest house, out of Llandudno, and gave you something tangible to do while putting money in your pocket that would all eventually go to the baby. You started shopping for baby stuff at thrift stores and online exchange groups, still avoiding social media for any other reason. You dressed modestly and kept your head low. You shopped off peak times to avoid running in to anyone you knew. Sometimes you felt like people were watching you, but you avoided eye contact to prevent any awkward encounters and dressed in baggy clothes to avoid suspicion.
But when you were in private, you couldn’t help pull up your blouse and admire your swollen abdomen, and would often massage it for hours. It was something that was yours, something you made. No one could take this away from you.
Your body had rapidly expanded; ripe with the promise of new life. You thought you would hate pregnancy and in some ways you did, but you had never felt so powerful and beautiful. How strange and wonderful it was to be able to create life. It felt like you held the keys to the universe between your thighs. Men had to construct power out of arcane figments and through oppressing others; women were born with it, naturally.
Motherhood was never something you thought much about outside of eventually having children with Van someday. It wasn’t something you were desperate for or avoiding; just a thing that would happen in life like death and taxes. You liked kids well enough, but the idea of being a mum the way some people elevated the title didn’t appeal to you. You had always pitied the girls who got pregnant right away, pushing their babies in prams around town as if it were an expensive car. They were so simple and happy, having nothing in life but purpose. Their baby’s fathers were deadbeats or on and off again, some leftover boyfriend from high school, some anonymous and truant.
Having a child with someone you loved seemed natural. Single motherhood had never seemed like a desirable option, you never imagined yourself wanting a child so badly you were willing to do it alone. But here you were, pregnant and unwed.
What changed, you weren’t sure. You and Van had never talked about what would happen if you unexpectedly fell pregnant. He was very confident in his purpose to be a father, talking about having children as if it was coming up on the calendar like Christmas. However, he never reconciled how children would factor into his career, especially his desire to be a career band. If he was constantly touring, how often would he be able to see them? Surely he wouldn’t expect them to go on tour with him, depriving them of a normal childhood. Then again, having a rockstar as a father voids your life from any semblance of normalcy. Everything would be a compromise or a sacrifice.
It was always you and your children who would have to take the fall. You couldn’t build a life or career of your own if you were following him around everywhere. Then when you fell pregnant, having to hang back and raise babies by yourself while your love was off touring. Van would get to have a career and a dutiful partner to carry and raise his children, even if he didn’t get to see them as much as he liked. No sacrifices.
You had always thought in some part of your mind you would terminate if you found yourself where you were now. Especially in high school, before you had left to follow him, and you could have finished school and gone to uni. You’d heard of other girls having terminations, you surely wouldn’t be the first or the last. Van would have only been a short part of your life, surely you would go on to accomplish bigger things and have greater loves. When you looked back, your relationship with Van would be a series of blurs, as if it never occurred. A dream long past.
But that was all the Before. You were now in the After. Van had evenly divided your life into Before and After when he savagely dumped you. Before, you were Van’s. After, you were not. You had never considered After as a real possibility, too drunk in love to weigh the viable consequences of your present decision making. If Van were to leave you, you would have nothing, but the kind of nothing you could mold like clay into a makeshift home. Perhaps not a castle, but a viable shelter one could habit. You could finish school, go to uni, find a job, and never return.
But Van did not merely leave you. Van left you with a child. With nothing in your wallet but a ticket home. Even though he had broken up with you, it was still a child born out of love. You couldn’t force yourself to hate him. Instead, when you thought of him, your heart just sank, leaving in its wake a grief so raw it felt primal. Even though Van had shattered your heart, you still loved him. A child made from love is still born of love, no matter what happens between those two events. Terminating the child of the man you loved felt wrong, despite how thoroughly he discarded you. Especially when you had nothing else to show for it. By having this child, you were giving your love new life.
-
The first time you and Van made love was in his bedroom. He had played you some new songs he had written, and you gushed over his talent like you always did. He could play you new songs every day and it would thrill you just as much as it had the day before. This, of course, led to making out. To your hands down the front of each other’s pants, to pulling off your clothes like they were on fire. Being naked together was still a novelty, fresh and exciting as the day you kissed at that party. The feeling of bare skin pressed together made your whole body tingle, echoing the hunger you felt in your most sacred spaces. You wrapped your legs around his back to maximize the area your skin was in contact. Your bodies rocked together and the earth stood still, as if you were the first couple to discover how to become a part of each other.
You thought your world would change upon your sexual debut, that you would gain some worldly knowledge or unleash a host of curses like pandora’s box. But you largely felt the same. There was no rapture. You had experienced something new, but it hadn’t changed anything for you. You remained yourself. The world spun madly on.
-
Van stopped inhabiting your mind as he once had. Every once and a while you would see something that reminded you of him, like jaffa cakes in the store or Austin Powers playing on TV. Or you would hear someone mention the band, which wasn’t often when you hardly spoke to anyone outside of your family. It didn’t hurt any less when you were reminded of him, but the pain didn’t visit quite so often. The band released a new album, which you only learned about by a poster near the bus stop. You didn’t listen to it.
-
When it came time to pick a name, you weren’t sure what you wanted. For so long, it had just been the baby, nameless but present. Giving it a name was making it real. It would be here soon, earthside. No longer just a concept growing inside of you. Out of your body, and into your arms. Yours.
-
Your brother would never admit it, but he was secretly ecstatic to be an uncle. He built furniture for the nursery and identified every nook and cranny of the guest house that would need to be baby-proofed. Your parents warmed to the idea of being grandparents, checking up on you daily; making sure you ate and took prenatal vitamins. Your mother started bringing home baby clothes and asking to accompany you to your appointments. But the appointments felt too private, you were doing this alone and wanted to meet your baby alone for the first time. You didn’t even want anyone in the delivery room with you. Except Van. You used to think nothing could be more pathetic than having to be alone in the delivery room, but you were excited to have your child all to yourself for their first moments of life.
The OB/GYN who helped you make a birth plan gave you a quizzical look when you said you would be alone in the delivery room. Surely she had noticed the lack of ring on your finger and the fact that you always arrived to appointments alone. Very rarely did the judgement of others truly bother you, but it hurt to be reminded that you were an unwanted fool, hungover on love. That this all could have been avoided had you terminated. But who is scorning all the men who knock women up and leave them to give birth alone? Why is there shame in being the one that stayed?
-
Soon you were so pregnant you could hardly hide it, and had to hide yourself in order to avoid the attention. You asked your family to pick up groceries for you, afraid of being recognized. The last thing you needed was more external stress when you were due any day now.
However, it was late one night and no one in your family was nearby, and you were desperately craving some yoghurt. You checked the clock anxiously, figuring no one would be at Tesco on a Friday night. Everyone but you would be at the pub or at home with loved ones. You put on your baggiest outfit just in case, but even that couldn’t disguise that you were with child.
The shops were a brief walk away, and the cover of night was suitable camouflage. You thought about how fucking pathetic you looked, a pregnant girl trying to hide it while walking alone in the dark on a Friday. The night sky was the same shade as when Van had walked you home from that party, inky and rich. Only now the breeze felt that much more bitter.
-
Tesco was predictably empty, and you exhaled a sigh of relief at the lack of customers. Being out in public gave you the same adrenaline rush as when you would sneak out through your window at night to meet Van, except this time the stakes were much higher. The only sound was the low thrum of the freezers and fluorescent lights. You shuffled to the dairy case at the back of the store, trying to make as little noise as possible, studying the brown and beige pattern of the floor tiles. Your abdomen was now too large for you to zip up your coat over it, so you held it together with your spare hand, a basket in the other.
It seemed that every section in the store had been rearranged since your previous visit, and you felt disoriented wandering around the aisles. The yoghurt section seemed to have doubled since the last time you were there. There were all sorts of flavors and various milk bases, like goat and coconut. You absentmindedly threw several in your basket, unsure of what you wanted now and later.
Suddenly, you felt the unmistakable feeling of eyes glazing over you, a petite form hovering in your peripheral. You could tell from the intensity this wasn’t a stranger--you were being recognized. That realization alone spawned sheer panic, your heart rate quickening. That panic amplified when you looked down, realizing that you had let go of the edges of your coat to stock your basket, your bump on full display.
You turned to the opposite side of the body, hoping to avoid an awkward confrontation. In the corner hung a convex security mirror. In it’s distorted reflection, you recognized the body that had been watching you.
It was Mary McCann.
-
You practically sprinted towards the self checkout, hands fumbling with every scan. You walked faster on the way home than you ever had in your non-pregnant life. By the time you made it in the guest house, you were out of breath and exhausted. Your face was wet--you hadn’t realized you’d been crying. You threw the yoghurt in the fridge, still in the plastic Tesco bag.
Leaning against the wall, you struggled to catch your breath. Fuck. On a night you didn’t think anyone would be out except losers like yourself. The cruel irony of it all.
Anyone adjacent to Van, including Van himself, was exactly who you wanted to avoid. You had no idea what he had told his parents about you. What if they thought you had broken up with him and had gotten pregnant by someone else? Surely they didn’t still think you were together.
Seeing Mary also meant confronting another painful reality for your child: that their life would be half. They would have half the parents, half the family, half the resources, half the attention. Half of the visitors, half of the birthday cards, half of the gifts on Christmas. Half of the support. Half of the love.
This realization turned your stomach, grief bubbling up through your esophagus in dry heaves and sobs. How could you be so fucking selfish? The child was yours, but at what cost to them? At least if you had terminated, you could have eventually moved on and pretended it had never happened. Now you had an eternal scarlet letter to show for it because you were a glutton for punishment.
You knew Mary and Bernie would adore any child of Van’s, whether he was with their mother or not. But the shame held onto you like an anchor; dragging you away from others. I mean, how do you tell someone you’re carrying their grandchild but their own child wants nothing to do with them? At the same time, how could you keep them from their own blood? It would be less painful if they had rejected you the way their son had. Who knows, maybe they would take his side. It wasn’t worth the potential hurt and embarrassment if they did. If Van didn’t believe in the existence of his own child, then it was best not to disturb his reality.
-
It was a crisp weekday morning when your water broke. Your brother drove you to the hospital, vowing to stay in the waiting room as long as it took so you wouldn’t be entirely alone. After several of the most transformative hours of your life, you felt the most immense, profound relief as you heard her cry for the first time. Her. Your baby girl.
Your brother wept when he got to hold her for the first time. Your whole family cried, in fact. You could hardly give her up, wanting to do skin to skin for hours while she slept in your arms. You were mesmerized, she was so delicate and fragile and you made her yourself. You had never known a love this natural and profound. The way you loved her father was different, he was someone you had found. But she was something you made, something more than yourself.
-
Single motherhood with a newborn was hard. There was no one to lean on for midnight feedings, helping with laundry, taking turns with diapers. Of course you enjoyed having her to yourself, and your family helped out as much as they could. But the exhaustion was omnipresent, as you rarely slept for more than two hours at a time on top of doing all the housework and caretaking yourself.
You tried to work whenever you could get someone to watch her or when she would go down for a nap, which happened out of the blue on one overcast afternoon. She had been fussing all morning but had refusing every feeding and pacifier, finally wearing herself out in the early afternoon so you could get some work done.
After just having settled into your desk with a warm mug of coffee, you heard a knock at the door. You didn’t know anyone to knock--your family simply barged right in, and the guest house was at the back of the property so it was out of the way of deliveries and salesmen. Throwing a sweater on over your nightgown, you softly stepped to the door, careful not to make too much noise and wake up your baby.
Nothing could have prepared you for what you saw on the other side of the door. You were sure it was a ghost--no way this could be real. The apparition was a long, thin body outfitted with black jeans and a well cut jacket; sat under a head of piecey blonde hair framing once-sharp cheekbones that had filled out with age. Most haunting of all were the piercing blue eyes--eyes you would recognize in a thousand lifetimes over.  Your vision began to shift as if you were tripping, the air evaporated from your lungs as if you were underwater. The figure lifted it’s head as if to speak, but no sound was made.
Van was home.

L&CB tram No. 17 in colour by Frederick McLean Via Flickr: A version *colourised and © by me (if you want to use it, at least credit me and link to this description!) of Llandudno and Colwyn Bay Electric Railway (L&CB) tram No. 17 at the West Shore Terminus. The front destination board shows 'Llandudno'.
The original B&W version is at:- flic.kr/p/2kT84qn
The photo reverse is stamped with the photographer (and/or negative owner) name of S. N. J. White.
Tram No. 17 was a single deck enclosed car with driver vestibules built in 1909 by United Electric Car Co. seating 31 and running on a Warner Radial (built by Mountain & Gibson) truck. It was retrucked with Peckham P35 trucks in 1927 and in 1936 it and the rest of the No. 15 to 18 batch were withdrawn from service, being stored alongside the Rhos Depot until 1941. In 1941 the trucks (and electrical equipment?) were sold to Leeds City Tramways, the bodies being disposed of with two going to a local army camp. The parts of the L&CB tramways systems that had not already been withdrawn or transferred to bus operation closed in March 1956.

Any photograph, ephemera, etc I post on Flickr is in my possession, nothing is copied from another location. The original photographer may have taken copies from their original negative and passed them out (sold them?) so there may be other copies out there of your (and my) 'original' transport photo, although occasionally there may be 'holiday snaps' type photos where there are not any other photos exactly the same in existence.
