There's a real physical reason for the three tries to plug in a USB port meme. There's a tab inside the USB male connector that is supposed to help you plug it in right. It tends to wobble a little, which prevents the first attempt to plug in right side up. Most people tend to flip it over and try again. Attempting to plug it in wrong reseats the tab properly. So then you flip it right side up again and this time, the third attempt, it works. Ta da! Ain't science grand! (comment courtesy of @smbilodeau)

Tbf it's way better than what came before it. Like by an insane margin. I don't think people appreciate hotswap functionality as much as they should. How many of you have used PS2? How about USB 1.0? Being able to swap ports without rebooting is taken for granted nowadays, but imagine if you had to reboot your PC every time you wanted to use a thumb drive. How about if your cat steps on your keyboard cord while you're in the middle of a game and it comes unplugged? Go and give your USB type A ports a kiss next time you see them. It was all some disturbing plot from one of those too... helpless and at his mercy.
