There's a real physical reason for the three tries to plug in a USB port meme. There's a tab inside the USB male connector that is supposed to help you plug it in right. It tends to wobble a little, which prevents the first attempt to plug in right side up. Most people tend to flip it over and try again. Attempting to plug it in wrong reseats the tab properly.
