ESPN Layoffs and cutting employment
ESPN announced Friday that it had laid off some broadcast journalists in hopes of saving money. ESPN said in a statement that it needed to cut costs “in the area of public-facing commentator salaries,” including “a small group of job cuts in the short term.” The layoffs included some of the network’s biggest names. Suzy Kolber also acknowledged in a Twitter post on Friday afternoon that she had…

Metronomics
Sometimes it's too much, Gotham. Too much putting his body on the line for a city that can't and won't change.
Bruce imagines what his life could have been, what his children's lives could have been, if things had been different.
~~
Sometimes it's too much. Gotham. Too polluted, too populated, to poor...
Morally poor, he should say. The money's never been more than a means to an end for Bruce and he's never cared who has or hasn't got it. Even if he knows that's evidence enough of how out of touch he really is. To not be, and never have been, the levels of desperate so many of his fellow Gothamites have. Are. But he can't change that now. Not after a lifetime of more money than he could ever hope to spend (and God knows he's tried).
And it's not that he thinks poverty equals moral corruptness. Of course not. But God, if it doesn't cause a rot that's hard to escape. An agony deep in the bones, like an atomic bomb. Almost a century since, but still poisoning the ground and the air and the lives where it fell.
It's too much, sometimes. Gotham. Decades of putting his body, his heart, mind on the line for a city that doesn't change and can't change and... Won't.
Part of his Brucie-rich-boy-bit has always been a pretend man of the people. 'Billionaire spotted on Chicago's L-train', a picture of him in $5,000 jeans, throwing a peace sign on the platform at Quincy. 'Bruce Wayne joins the commute on Bangkok's BTS Skytrain' sunburned and sweaty and grinning like a moron. Public transport is easy when you don't need it. The delays, the overcrowding, the cost. All part of the big adventure when you're rich and famous.
He's deliberate in his appearances. Shows up too big to be allowed and always lost. Asking fellow travellers for directions and breaking every unspoken, local rule. Stopping at the bottom of escalators and standing on the right and never having his ticket ready at the barriers... but he's deliberate in his anonymity too.
He's ridden the New York subway and Shanghai's metro and Vienna's U-bahn more times than he can count. Undercover, trailing marks and tailing suspects, slipping past local police and resident gangsters alike. Just another nameless face in the crowd.
But then there's the times he's just there as himself. Times he rides the lines as Bruce. Not the billionaire, not the Bat. Just Bruce. Grey Ghost fan, hates mushrooms, loves dinosaurs. Father, friend, son. Just another traveller amidst the millions. Nobody wanting anything from him, nobody talking to him, nobody even noticing him. It's freedom unlike any he's ever known.
It makes him wonder what his life might have been. If he hadn't been born in the South Wing's master bedroom of Wayne Manor. What his children's lives might have been, if their father had just been a man, and not this man.
Dick for sure, Olympic medallist. There's no doubt. Even without the money and the training and the classes, his boy was destined for greatness. Gold medals and podiums and adoration. Coaching and teaching and leading. And, Bruce fancies, probably the ESPN correspondent for major competitions. Team USA coach. International Olympic Committee. Whatever Dick wanted; in any life there's nothing he couldn't do.
Cass, Bruce likes to think, would have been an architect. If she'd ever been afforded a normal life, ever been given the tender love and care she so deserved as a child. She reads people with ease, drilled into her as it was by Cain; a skill as crucial as its learning was cruel. But given a normal life? Architecture, Bruce is sure. The way she navigates space, the way she uses it and understands it. What better way to make a life than creating in the space she so fully inhabits? Designing structures that change the way people live, challenge how they think. She'd have been glorious.
Tim, on the other hand... Tim. If Bruce thinks about him too long the guilt starts to set in. His brilliant boy, just next door; alone for so long. Bruce was intimately familiar with the experience, though at least he'd had Alfred when he'd been young. If only he'd just paid more attention, he could have— anyway. In another time, one where Bruce rides the subway and to work and Tim doesn't spend the first decade of his life by himself, surely he'd be some fintech billionaire wizz kid by now. He'd have created a Facebook or eBay or Venmo. But better. Kinder. Richer probably than Bruce, now. And he'd still ride the metro next to his old man.
Damian, Bruce's youngest, sweetest boy. Who knows what Damian could have been, in a life where Bruce and Talia kissed each other goodbye every morning and sweet dreams each night. He's a gentle soul, really, fierce as he is. Shows it in his affection for animals. Gives them the tenderness he never had as a child. Who knows what he could have been in a life filled with light instead of shadow. Warmth and love instead of the League's relentless dark. A scientist maybe, or an astronaut. A teacher, a vet, a nurse. Whatever he wanted. A gardener, a piano tuner, a cab driver. Happy, whatever it was. And safe in the knowledge he was loved.
And then... and then, Jason. Bruce thinks of his second son the most, as he rides the rails. Takes the Bakerloo south from Marylebone and the Tanamachi west to Hirano. What Jason could have been, if things had been different. It doesn't seem fair to dwell on it. To imagine the darling, sweet boy who had been Robin as anything but. To disrespect the incredible fucking gift he's already been given of a second chance, by imagining it as any different. So instead he thinks that Jason would still be Robin. Still Red Hood. Still saving people, still putting himself on the line to make the world better. Even if Bruce didn't love the way he did it, he still loved Jason. Gods did he love him. It's too much, sometimes.
Gotham. Sometimes she's too much. But most of the time, most of the time she was everything. His home, his children's home.
To see the sun rise from the east corner of the clocktower with Cass and swing between the crumbling art deco blocks of Coventry, Dick by his side. Racing down her labyrinth of alleyways and side streets with Tim and even negotiating her sewers with Damian. And Jason. Just seeing Jason's face, scowling at him though it usually is, as he waits outside the Collins Street station for Bruce to arrive.
"Your late." He grunts, as Bruce climbs the steps of the subway. He looks at his watch irritably. "If we miss brunch, you're paying."
"Of course," Bruce says, a warm hand on Jason's shoulder as they begin to walk. "Anything for you, chum."
She's too much, sometimes. Gotham. But most of the time? She's exactly where he wants to be

So I'm sure everyone saw that ESPN rookie ranking that put Cam at #1 and Caitlin #6...
I don't think she's as low as #6. Her stats put her at #1. But then there's the high usage rate, low efficiency, and fact her team was better last year. So you could maybe put her at #2. But #6 is wild! They're basically saying she's off the all-rookie team.
But I don't think ESPN actually believes that. And I do think they'll give her ROTY at the end of the season. But there's something else going on behind the scenes. And ESPN ranked her #6 to prepare people for what's about to happen.
The Olympic roster has been finalized and USA Basketball is preparing their press release. Everyone on the team already knows they're on the team. USA Basketball can smell the media shit storm on the horizon. So they've told contacts in the media about what's going to happen. And those contacts are trying to bring the CC narrative to a screeching halt before the news hits. They're trying at the last minute to drag the entire media circus over to Cameron Brink, the Stanford Olympian. But it won't work. It's going to be hell because the CC narrative is a runaway train.
But I think it'll be good for CC. It will motivate her. It will give her a chance to reflect on the sport and her place in it at this point in time. It will give her a chance to focus on what she can control and ignore the things she can't control. One thing she can control is her response to the roster news. Depending on how she responds, she can have a massive impact on the hell the veterans will face.
The best case scenario for all involved is if she gets out ahead of the angry mob. If she says the right thing, she can turn the entire angry mob into flag-waving Team USA patriots. That's what the sport of women's basketball needs from her. She has an opportunity to earn a tsunami of respect and gratitude from veterans and from USA Basketball. That respect and gratitude is far more valuable than anything the angry mob can ever offer her.
But she doesn't have to say anything if she doesn't want to. She could stand back and let the mob have their way with the national team. She wouldn't be the first star to do that.

apologies if you’ve answered this before or if there’s not really a specific gathered resource, but you seem knowledgeable about such things!— i am interested in learning more about f1 racing, do you have any recommendation for where to find a beginners guide/‘f1 for dummies’/place to begin learning more?
hello!!! i am also rather new to the sport and had to consume massive amounts of content from all over the place and frankly am still learning a lot all the time, so i'm not exactly an expert. what i can share are resources i relied on in my own ✨ descent into madness ✨ though !
so, my incomplete and questionable guide to selling your soul to f1:
it's all about how you like to learn and consume media tbh. i tried to watch a race initially, was confused, regrouped and started exploring. personally i watched all of dts up to the current season and then watched the first few races that i had missed while obsessively trawling twitter to learn more and waiting for my first live race (aka australia this year — massive rip). but it's up to you how you dive in!!
drive to survive
don’t get me wrong, dts has its issues — they invent drama, have some misleading portrayals, like to splice together clips from different race weekends together. it’s definitely more of a creative project than a straight up documentary.
that being said, it also explains a lot of the lore and history behind the sport, teams, and drivers in an entertaining fashion. it’s newcomer friendly so it explains the rules. yes, will buxton gets a lot of heat for stating the obvious, but some of those obvious explanations are helpful for the clueless.
there are also a lot of very cool shots and some good exclusive interviews that they get. sure, you can probably find them clipped on youtube, but may as well just watch dts. the first season is a little slow if you’re like me and want to see charles immediately (worth noting not all teams had agreed to participate s1), but that’s just me.
(plus: it’s entertaining. i live for drama. just take said drama with a grain of salt and assume it’s probably invented or blown out of proportion.)
the tiktok girlies
again: tiktok can be a bit hit or miss. you’ll see a lot of bad takes and pure cringe if you linger too long on f1 tiktok. but i started watching content from a few f1 girlies who seems reliable and had friendly introductory content. they’re generally very nice and happy to answer questions.
after a while i stopped watching them just because i no longer needed the intro information or explanations, but they did help fill in gaps and point out some of the inaccuracies of dts.
some who helped me learn more:
@/lissiemackintosh (okay she's an f1 presenter but she's cool as shit i love her queen of the paddock etc etc)
@casxf1 (intro content is sort of her Thing)
@formula_dev (she was my go-to girlie for learning)
@f1toni
f1tv content
i am pretty sure f1tv isn’t available in all countries, but i have always watched races through f1tv. there are a lot of ways to watch races live illicitly if that’s what you prefer, and other countries have sky or other channels they can watch on (USA also has espn), but i prefer f1tv because i’m too lazy to find streams and don’t want to worry about stream issues mid race.
plus: f1tv comes with a whole archive of past seasons and a host of other media content during race weekends (ie, the fia press conferences on thursday, post-quali and post-race). they have a tech talk series that explains some of the technical aspects, do weekend warm-ups each race weekend that gives an update/context, and have been adding more intro content on the platform. there’s an app, which is convenient.
the f1tv stream also allows you to use the channel switcher to choose between your commentary options (f1tv or sky’s commentators), or to see the live timing data, or to see any of the driver onboards. it’s quick and you can switch back and forth easily. (if your computer can handle it — my mac often can’t — you can use multiviewer with your f1tv subscription to set up a bunch of different screens and panels to watch, for example, the main stream and a driver’s onboard. or multiple onboards. or whatever you want basically. personally i usually put the race on my ipad and the onboard on my phone, because that streams perfectly and multiviewer likes to kill my laptop.)
the downfall of f1tv is that they don’t have a smart tv app yet. idk why. it’s very irritating. it also might be a bit expensive to some, but i think it’s worth it.
f1 twitter (hell)
it’s a minefield out there. truly. BUT my next big question, after starting to get into watching races live and watching some old seasons and learning how it works, is how people seemed to always be in the know about paddock gossip. i wanted to know about it as it was happening and see the ~drama~ unfold live and feel like i was part of the season actually occurring.
so: twitter. follow your teams, follow your drivers, the for you tab is actually your friend here because it’ll bring new journalists and f1 commentators into your orbit as you learn who is who. some of the big driver fan pages operate as sources of information and updates with relative stealth if not immediate updating.
at this point i follow enough people (and have infected my algorithm enough) that i tend to see gossip and updates across most of the teams. big news tends to get shared by everyone anyway.
if you prefer tumblr, you can still get A Lot of updates on drama and gossip pretty quickly. there is a bit of a delay between information hitting twitter and information hitting tumblr (partially because none of the official teams or drivers have accounts on tumblr; partially because of the amount of people on f1twt versus f1blr). BUT, a lot of us tumblr girlies liveblog during the races and sessions and bring any crucial content over from twitter to share here, so the info will probably be here eventually/soonish. (following the race tags each weekend will prob give you a lot of the quick updates live.)
some great charles specific update accounts
@leclercsletters
@leclercdata
@/charlsleclerc
@cleclercfansuk
others i follow for the 🍵 (not necessarily CL fans/i follow some ppl i disagree with for the intel)
@fiadocsbot (😭) / @f1 / other official accounts press etc.
@_allthatglitz
@maranellosaint
@scuderiafemboy (actually also has tumblr)
@fm1_3316
@/lecstappens
@candeleclerc16
@/elpredestinato
@formuleo_
@pikaclerc
@leclerqz
@fottitiferrari
@/f1tami
@/htrs4piastri
@estestroll
@fanaticsferrari
there are certainly more i see on my timeline all the time !!! this is just skimming through my following on the train 😭
tbh if i started trying to list tumblrs with hot takes that i follow we might be here all day. note to self: make my following list public lmfao
introductory posts & masterlists & others
full disclosure: these are resources i went hunting for out of curiosity and never actually used myself, but they looked fun and funky so yaknow. if there are iconic masterlists that i am missing, rip, someone please feel free to add or correct me. some of these are definitely seasons of old (aka like last year) but you get the point.
f1chronicle has this guide!
f1 put out their own beginner's guide to f1 video but it's like......5 minutes (and here is their longer intro video for 2023)
this much longer intro to the rules video by school of sports looks promising
apparent f1 also has a whole category of articles in their beginner's guide series
@babssionate's ppt guide to f1 and drivers intro
@shuntedmate's (sister's) ppt beginner's guide to f1
pitwall's beginner guide to f1 ppt
@race-week's guide to getting into the technical side of f1 (and whole blog appears to be some cool info on drivers and histories etc)
here is @lestappenforever's glorious guide to charles' driving style that i re-found while trying to figure out if i have a reference list tag (i dont)

Let me just clarify this: I don’t like Turning Point USA or other conservative media sources or that Riley was part of that. However violence against a woman because she has”wrong think” is still violence against women.
Footage of ex-college swimmer Riley Gaines being chased and verbally abused by protesters, who shut down a talk she had been due to give at San Francisco State University (SFSU), has been widely shared on social media.
Gaines alleges she was "physically hit twice by a man," with video posted on Twitter showing her being escorted to safety by police whilst demonstrators chant and heckle.
An intense debate has developed about the role of trans athletes in women's sport, with Republican-controlled states passing a wave of laws banning their participation.
On Thursday Gaines had been due to address a Turning Point USA (TPUSA) event at SFSU, but this was unable to proceed after demonstrators gained access to the venue.
A video Gaines shared on Twitter, which appears to show her being escorted out of the venue whilst protesters chant "trans rights are human rights," has been viewed more than 180,000 times.
Gaines commented: "The prisoners are running the asylum at SFSU...I was ambushed and physically hit twice by a man. This is proof that women need sex-protected spaces. Still only further assures me I'm doing something right. When they want you silent, speak louder."
Tumblr media
Another video of Gaines leaving the room, whilst being protected by police officers, was shared on Twitter by David Llamas, the "TPUSA College Field Representative for the Bay Area."
In this footage, demonstrators chant "trans women are women," whilst one protester shouts slurs at Gaines, labelling her a "b*****."
This footage, which was retweeted by Gaines, has received over 280,000 views.
Tumblr media
Nancy Hogshead, CEO of the 'Champion Women,' campaign group, tweeted that "trans radicals punched Riley Gaines" who "is in police protection now." This post, which added "male violence is the bane of our existence," was also retweeted by Gaines.
In a statement sent to Fox News Digital, Eli Bremer, Gaines' agent, commented: "Instead of a thoughtful discussion tonight at SFSU, Riley was violently accosted, shouted at, physically assaulted, and barricaded in a room by protesters. It is stunning that in America in 2023, it is acceptable for biological male students to violently assault a woman for standing up for women's rights."
Newsweek has contacted San Francisco State University and Turning Point USA for comment by email.
Gaines had previously competed against Lia Thomas, a University of Pennsylvania student who in March 2022 became the first trans woman to win the NCAA Division I women's 500-yard freestyle event.
Speaking to Fox News in December, Gaines accused Thomas of having "an utter disregard and disrespect towards women."
Thomas insisted trans athletes aren't a threat to women's sport, during an interview with ESPN in May 2022.
She commented: "Trans women competing in women's sports does not threaten women's sports as a whole.
"The NCAA rules regarding trans women competing in women's sports have been around for 10-plus years. And we haven't seen any massive wave of trans women dominating."
In August Gaines appeared alongside former President Donald Trump at a Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) event in Dallas.

actually the rating is very bad. As someone that is a ratings guru I can tell you the ins and outs of how ratings works for specific networks. You listed WWE Raw on the USA network that is cable my friend which is a whole different monster, also a sports telecast. 911 on the other hand is a procedural drama on one of the big 4 networks. The Big 4 consist of Fox, ABC, NBC and CBS. The Big 4 will cancel shows if they're not performing up to par and I think Fox is at the point with 911
Listen, dude (gn). You sent me five asks telling me things I already know about tv ratings saying I asked for it, which I absolutely did not, and trying to argue that Fox is disappointed and on the verge of cancelling 9-1-1, which is definitely not true.
Tumblr media
As you can see here, 9-1-1 is at the top of the 2022-2023 average for FOX's scripted shows. Even adding in the non-scripted shows, it's doing quite well:
Tumblr media
Reality tv is a big ratings draw, this is a well-known fact, but networks will not want to bind themselves to only one kind of show either.
Let's take a look at ratings over all networks:
Tumblr media
Huh, would you look at that. Not too shabby by our little weewoo show! Note also the overall big dips in viewers year over year - this is not a problem isolated to 9-1-1, it's happening all across the board.
None of these ratings hold a candle to what news shows and stuff like MLB, NFL and NBA can draw for big games, but network execs are well aware of this, and trying to compare those are like comparing apples to oranges. But I did take a look at how the NBA game last Monday did on ESPN anyway: 0.59 in the key demo.
And I did compare it to RAW, for the simple reason that RAW also airs on Mondays at 8PM. We can compare it with the other big wrestling show too (as their ratings is a topic I'm more than familiar with), if you like: Smackdown on FOX on Fridays, latest numbers are a 0.63 rating, while nothing else on tv (not just cable or network, all of tv) was above 0.43.
Tumblr media
Saying FOX is anywhere near cancelling 9-1-1 for their ratings is a ridiculous statement. Now, you are right in saying (in another of your messages) that procedural shows are at risk of the original actors wanting to move on and/or dragging out the story far longer than would be ideal, but I don't think we're at that point yet with 9-1-1. We'll know more come May when show renewals take place (and I think some of the main actors' contracts as well), but it's no use speculating about anyone leaving as there's been no indication of that yet.
Also no offense, but calling yourself a ratings guru is hilarious and makes you sound like a pro wrestling twitter user that whines in Bryan Alvarez's mentions every week when he posts the WWE and AEW ratings.

Honestly re: Archetypes, the way anyone sees this as a failure of anyone other than Spotify is beyond me. Spotify podcasts lost almost every big name it announced: Obamas, Clintons, Kim K, Ava DuVernay, and more. Articles were coming out every few months since like...2020 or 2021 about people leaving or not solidifying deals with Spotify. Meghan's team said she had lots of ideas and content (that were probably not approved by Spotify) and is continuing the work on other platforms. She won awards, dethroned JOE ROGAN, went #1 or Top 5 in multiple countries, and Spotify included her in their financial report. This is literally not a "she didn't do enough" kind of thing. The exec who threw that tantrum with the grifters comment has been fired by other high-profile jobs like at ESPN for being a loudmouth bullying POS. Spotify is making massive layoffs. This is just like Netflix and the Pearl thing imo: Spotify can no longer afford podcasts and are getting ready to axe (or significantly restructure) the entire division and Meghan got out while she could before she could get contracted to something that wasn't lucrative and was even more restrictive. Imo, if Spotify wanted to keep the max exodus of podcasters from leaving their platform, they shouldn't have paid Joe Rogan a quarter of a billion dollars to alienate the majority of their consumers with disgusting rhetoric and behavior.
To me, if you take out the hearsay and only go based on what we know, it's literally all on Spotify.
Yes, based on the article I reblogged, it sounds like Spotify had no good plan for the Sussexes, or had an unrealistic plan that they didn’t even really support. Like they were throwing money at famous people with no medium-term reason. They sound like a bunch of idiots tbh.
And yes, it sounds like Meghan delivered but that Spotify either moved the goalposts or weren’t honest with even themselves about what she would bring. It seems pretty clear that she wasn’t going to be on the mic 2-3x/week.
Joe Rogan’s has a big audience because he stirs up shit with no regard for consequences, which is exactly what right-wing audiences want. There’s a reason Fox News does better in the USA than MSNBC and CNN, and it’s because liberals and left-leaning audiences get their news and analysis from a variety of places whereas conservatives are lock-step like fascists. It’s been hard for the left-wing/even left of center to get a foothold like that anywhere.
If I fault the Sussexes for anything, it’s getting into bed with Spotify at all. But I think it’s good to remember that they’re just two people forging a brand new path without any experience yet needing to make several million $$$ per year. Like I said, I think they still need to figure out how to bring in tons of money—what do they have to sell?

Unveiling Disparities: Is There a Double Standard for Women Coaches Vs. Men Coaches? Revisiting the Grambling Volleyball Coach’s Termination
Tumblr media
In the realm of sports, the treatment of black women coaches vs men coaches often falls under the microscope. Their decisions have a profound impact on athletes’ careers. Recently, two high-profile coaching situations have thrust into the spotlight the issue of a double standard for black women coaches vs men coaches. The termination of the Grambling State University volleyball coach, Chelsey Lucas, as reported by ESPN, and the sweeping roster changes orchestrated by Coach Prime Deion Sanders at Colorado, as reported by USA Today, provide compelling examples of the gender disparities experienced by black women and men in coaching roles. As we delve into these cases, we’ll explore the intricate dynamics surrounding the double standard for black women coaches versus men coaches in the sports arena. For more insightful content on community empowerment and unity, we invite you to visit Afrofusionist.com
Chelsey Lucas: A Controversial Decision
Chelsey Lucas, a former Grambling State University volleyball player and 2006 SWAC Defensive Player of the Year, was appointed as the head coach of the Grambling State Tigers’ volleyball team in February 2022. However, her tenure was marred by controversy just months after her hiring. Lucas made the unprecedented decision to cut all 12 returning scholarship players from the team, a move that shocked and disappointed many players and fans alike.
Lucas defended her decision, citing NCAA rules that do not guarantee scholarships and argued that coaches have the power to make such changes to advance their programs. Grambling State’s initial support of Lucas’s decision only further fueled the debate. However, it’s essential to note that this decision led to an independent review of the allegations surrounding the program, leaving the situation unresolved.
Deion Sanders: A Roster Overhaul at Colorado
In contrast, Deion Sanders aka Coach Prime, the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes football team, embarked on a radical roster overhaul in his first year in charge. Sanders, who took the helm after the team’s dismal 1-11 season, wasted no time in making significant changes. This overhaul led to at least 37 scholarship players entering the transfer portal, accounting for 83.5% of the team’s scholarship players.
Sanders justified his decision by comparing it to “cleaning out old furniture” to make room for new recruits. He brought in a substantial number of transfer players, creating a transfer class that ranked number one in the nation. What’s striking is the swiftness and scope of Sanders’ actions, with injured and returning players being shown the door.
The Double Standard Question
The stark difference in the treatment of Chelsey Lucas and Coach Prime in their coaching roles raises questions about whether there is a double standard for black women coaches as opposed to black men coaches. Lucas’s decision to cut scholarship players was met with scrutiny and an ongoing investigation, while Sanders’s massive roster overhaul was largely accepted as a necessary step to improve the team.
It’s important to acknowledge the complexities of each situation and the unique challenges faced by coaches in different sports. However, the contrasting responses to Lucas and Sanders suggest that Black women coaches may encounter more resistance and scrutiny when making bold decisions compared to their male counterparts.
Final Thoughts
The termination of Grambling volleyball coach Chelsey Lucas and the extensive restructuring of the roster under Coach Prime at Colorado stand out as compelling case studies in the realm of sports coaching. These situations, with their unique intricacies, highlight the imperative need for a fair and uniform assessment of coaching choices, irrespective of gender or race. It is essential for the sports community to persist in its pursuit of equitable treatment for all coaches, guaranteeing that opportunities and backing are distributed without bias, bridging the gap in sports coaching for black women compared to their male counterparts.

Mercury's social media team takes aim at Caitlin Clark as WNBA returns from Olympics hiatus
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The on-court rivalry between Caitlin Clark and three-time WNBA champion Diana Taurasi does not appear to be cooling off anytime soon.The Phoenix Mercury’s social media team jumped into the fray this weekend when a video, which appeared to troll Clark, surfaced on the team’s verified TikTok account.”I miss the WNBA. Caitlin, where are you?” a fan sitting on a couch says at the beginning of the video. “Who’s Caitlin? I’m here for Taurasi,” says a young fan in Mercury gear and holding a sign that reads, “Who is Caitlin? I’m here for Taurasi.”CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMThe video surfaced on the eve of the WNBA’s highly anticipated restart. The league went on hiatus after the All-Star game to provide players who were on the U.S. women’s national basketball team with an adequate amount of time to complete preparations for the Paris Olympics.WNBA ROOKIES CAITLIN CLARK AND ANGEL REESE TO BE FEATURED IN NBA 2K25Team USA defeated France, 67-66, in the gold medal game on Aug. 11. The American women have now won eight consecutive Olympic gold medals.The fan’s commentary in the TikTok video was immediately followed by a brief Taurasi-inspired highlight reel. The longtime Mercury guard is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in WNBA history. Meanwhile, Clark has helped bring an unprecedented amount of attention to women’s basketball.The Fever defeated the Mercury in late June when the teams matched up for the first time in the 2024 season. Clark was complimentary of Taurasi in the days leading up to her first opportunity to compete against a player she grew up idolizing.”It’s incredible,” Clark told reporters on June 29 about Taurasi’s two-decade run in the league. “I don’t think people realize how hard that is to do.”Clark also said taking the court for a game against a player of Taurasi’s caliber was “a dream come true. You get to live out your dream while playing against the best.”Meanwhile, when Taurasi was asked to share her thoughts on facing Clark for the first time, she delivered a brief response. “Yeah, it’ll be fun,” she said.The budding rivalry between Taurasi and Clark appeared to begin in April when the two-time WNBA Finals MVP was asked about what incoming WNBA rookies could expect. She proceeded to suggest that a rude awakening was in store.”Look, SVP, reality is coming,” Taurasi told ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt during an appearance on “SportsCenter” on April 6. “There’s levels to this thing. And that’s just life. We all went through it. You see it on the NBA side, and you’re going to see it on this side. You look superhuman playing against 18-year-olds, but you’re going to [be playing against] some grown women that have been playing professional basketball for a long time.” While the comments were about the rookie class as a whole, some believed the remarks were a direct jab at Clark, who dominated at the college basketball level.Nevertheless, Taurasi and Clark also share some similarities. Taurasi is the WNBA’s career scoring leader, while no one scored more points at the NCAA Division I level than Clark. Both point guards are also strong 3-point shooters.The Chicago Sky host Taurasi and the Mercury on Thursday night. Phoenix entered the game with a 13-12 record, while Chicago will restart the season looking to improve on its 10-14 mark. Brittney Griner surprises everyone with what she wants her son to call her
New parent Brittney Griner has opened up about her experience with new motherhood after the birth of her child. But don’t call her “Mom.” Griner appeared on CBS Sports’ “We Need to Talk” to discuss her new baby. Host Terrika Foster-Brasby told Griner, “You’re about to be a mom!” Griner corrected her, saying, “Pops, pops!” Related A Guide to Inclusive Gender-Neutral Family Terms If you’ve ever wondered about gender-neutral terms for “uncle” and “aunt” (or other words), here’s your authoritative list! “Oooh, let me get it together! Seven pounds eight ounces. Yeah, that’s my man,” she said. “He is amazing.” pic.twitter.com/XcHH3TiQ07— bucksrevange (@bucksrevange) July 20, 2024 Griner said she has loved being a parent so far. “They said as soon as you see them, everything that you thought mattered just goes out the window. That’s literally what happened.” Griner said that the timing was hard, as she is about to leave and go to Paris for her third Olympic appearance with Team USA. “It kind of sucks because I have to leave, but at the same time, he will understand,” she said, adding that “my whole phone has turned into him now.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by Cherelle T. Griner was the subject of a highly-publicized prisoner exchange between the United States and Russia in 2022. Griner was released from jail after nearly 300 days in prison after she was caught with cannabis in her luggage at an airport in Russia.
