Warning: The first people who interact with Panchito and Jose are racist. Yes hanging around people because they are “exotic” is a form of racism.
Disclaimer: I do not know Spanish or Portuguese ( I do know Tagalog and English) I do not have a deep knowledge of small towns in Mexico and Rio Brazil. I have read a few fan translated comics of Ze Carioca. There isn’t a lot of extra things about Panchito so my headcannon/AU is that he is a rancher on a small ranch town. This isn’t my best work. I just wanted to write out how Panchito and Jose met Donald in college. This is just for fun.
************************************************************************************
“Sorry, no espanyol”
“but I’m speaking English!?!?”
The girls walked away faster as if they didn’t hear him.
The rooster slumped. He shuffled his cowboy boots. Was coming to the United States a mistake? No, he bunched his callused hands into a fist. No, he can’t let his familia down. He clasped his overall straps and flipped his head back to face the sun. He felt the sun fill him with family pride. He could imagine his family cheering him on with gritos. Unbeknownst to him he was cheering out loud. Everyone in the collage lawn walked away annoyed by the joyful noise. Everyone but a white Duck. He saw the exchange and felt the pain of not being understood. The Roosters cowboy country style reminded him of time spent on his grandma’s farm. This was someone that he had something in common with.
After getting to know Donald, Panchito was amazed at all the places he has been. Panchito was born and raised on his Papa’s ranch just like his Papa and his Abuelos before him. He had what would be considered adventures but only in his hometown. He was the star of the town rodeo, he fought off wolfs from his cows, he was the youngest deputy in town because of his skills with pistols and rope. Going to college in the USA was the farthest he had gone from home. He never thought about what was in Africa, or China, or Greenland. He enjoyed listening to Donald’s adventures he learned a lot about the world around him from Donald. Donald had a lot to learn from Panchito as well. Donald had been to Mexico, but He was just a visitor. Panchito also taught him the music styles, dance styles, dating, words, everything he enjoyed about Mexican culture was joyfully shared.
************************************************************************************
Jose had girls around him constantly. he was confused. At home he had to fight and beg and scheme for women to notice him. He was confused about US culture, but no one explained it to him. He would ask the girls questions and they would just laugh and say, “I love the way you speak!” He knew they didn’t really care for him. He started to distance himself from them until his heart yearned for human interaction. He was an entertainer by heart and therefor would entertain them to a point.
There was one event that made him the most confused about the USA. A girl took him to see a Football game. He loved Football! He would play all the time with his chums in Brazil. He would try every year to sneak into the big Football games. He got ready for the game by dressing up in his football jersey. There were men with big shoulder pads and helmets. What were they? The entertainment? He finally realized they were the players. “Ah the USA must be really concerned with safety eh?” Then he saw the “ball”. “QUE!? That thing can’t even roll!” Then the player where holding the ball with their hands!?? “Onde já se viu uma coisa dessas?” He couldn’t stand it. He needed answers and these girls were not giving him answers! He stormed out of the game.
Why did he come here? He loved Brazil! Things made sense in Rio. He missed everything about home. He missed the constant music that flowed though out the streets of his little burgo. Jose was looking at his feet but only now he realized he was taping his foot. Oh! there was music playing. He could hear a quiet guitar playing outside the arena. He followed it. There was a white duck sitting under a tree playing.
Jose cleared his throat, “excuse me, you are very good.”
“Thanks.” The Duck said flatly and continued strumming.
Undeterred Jose sat on the opposite side of the tree from the Duck. Jose looked around to see if anyone was walking by. He reached into his pocket and pulled out an umbrella. “Mind if I -as you say- ‘jam’ with you?” the Duck just hummed. Jose put the umbrella to his lips and produced a flute sound to compliment the guitar.
Donald didn’t remember if the Parrot had a flute with him or not. He continued to strum while he peaked around the tree to see the Parrot was blowing on an umbrella. Upon closer inspection there was no holes on the umbrella, so the only explanation was, “Magic!”
The strumming and flouting stopped. Jose stood up quickly, “Magic? Hahah no, my friend, Magic isn’t real.” Jose was sweating and nervous laughing. he spoke quickly. “This, this is just a, what do you say? A novelty toy.” Jose moved the umbrella round so Donald couldn’t get a closer look at it.  Donald snatched it out of Jose’s hands and inspected it. An alarm was going off in Jose head. He had told his Avo he wouldn’t expose the family. Not everyone took kindly to magic. Jose dove for the umbrella. They tussled each swiping and snatching and hitting and pulling and pushing and reaching. Finally, Donald had pinned Jose to the ground one hand still held the umbrella. “Ha! No holes it has to be Magic!”
Jose could see he was out matched, he turned to his other tactic begging “Please please! I beg of you don’t take it! It’s a gift from my Avo! She would kill me! Please! It’s not that great anyways!”
Donald let Jose up. “It’s alright calm down, I just wanted to see.” He handed the umbrella back.
Jose hugged the umbrella tight.
Donald rubbed the back of his neck. “Sooooo your Avo gave it to you?”
Jose looked at Donald dubiously.
Donald held up his hands non threateningly “Hey, I’ve been around magic since I was born.”
“O que? You a magic user too?”
Donald shrugged, “Na I don’t like to use it that much, much rather use my fists.” Donald flashed a smile at Jose and continued “But if it wasn’t for magic my uncle, grandma and grandma would have been dead years ago.”
Jose loosened up. “ah just like my Avo made herself poção de remédio.” Jose mimicked making a potion.
“Ya…. That kinda stuff is not for me.” He looked at the umbrella. “So how does this one work.”
“Oh that’s easy,” Jose took the umbrella and held it like a guitar. “Just think of the tune in your head and let it flow to the umbrella.” Jose started a strumming motion and the sound of a guitar flowed out of the umbrella.
“Woah! Let me try!” Jose handed the umbrella over. Donald held his fingers like he would on the frets of the guitar and strummed the invisible strings. A strum came out. “Now this is magic I can get into.”
Donald’s cool and aloof persona melted around Jose and Panchito. Jose felt it a relief he could talk to Donald about a part of his life he didn’t usually share. Heck he hadn’t even told Nestor, his best friend, but then again Nestor was a superstitious sort. He felt like he could talk to Donald about anything. More importantly he felt he could ask Donald anything.
“You are… wise, Yes?”
Donald shrugged. “It depends.”
“Why do they name the Football here Football? They don’t use their feet!”
Donald laughed but tried to explain to the best of his ability. These friends taught each other much. Eventually Jose learned to enchant Donald’s hat into an accordion. They got to know each other more than just what country they hailed from and shared a dream to become famous for the music they poured their souls into.

not even retail or service- I have a foodservice job so I know the struggles of service well, but I've been working in the service industry since I was a CHILD (family business) so I'm so past 'fuck these customers' it's not even funny- but I took a week off to work a freelance theatre job as a spotlight operator and oh my god. two stories in one submission, hope that's okay.
So we (the company I was working for, who has since asked me to be a part of their company!!!) do site-specific theatre, meaning we don't own a venue, but we get contracted to do shows for summer entertainment at parks and such. Opening night, we had all the gates open for load-in and such and an hour before we actually were allowed to let guests in, a family waltzes in and takes a seat on the lawn, close to the stage. We hadn't even done soundcheck yet and we were still moving equipment around, so they needed to leave. They were clearly really excited for the show, one of them came dressed as the main character. Even though I'm just the spot op, our assistant stage manager asked me to tell them gates don't open til seven. I politely inform them, and they just move to a bench at the back of the park. I follow them over and tell them it's not safe for them to be there because we were still setting up, and they needed to get in line with everybody else outside the gate. The matriarch of the family chews me out but I keep up a good Customer Service Smile(tm) and watch them leave, and instead of forming a line, they just left entirely.
Later on, they come back, after we've already let about 500 people into the venue, and there are no good seats left. They proceed to sit directly in front of my spotlight, which would block me from being able to, you know, use my spotlight to light the stage. I cringe and get up, telling them they can't sit there and the woman goes ballistic, attracting the attention of our director. I then sit back in my chair behind my spot and watch them blatantly lie to a woman I'm trying to get in good with and say how shitty I am and how I kicked them out twice and 'yelled at them'. Our director proceeds to give them all seats in the VIP tent. UGH.  The night after that, though, right before Act 2 I get back from my intermission smoke break and a man approaches me, telling me he works so he couldn't catch Act 1, but he asks me to fill him in on the first act. It's one of my favorite shows, so I enthusiastically inform him of the plot, and then he continues to ask me questions about the show, my spotlight, and peppers in awkward comments about my body. It's at this point he starts insisting he wants to buy me a drink or some food. I inform him I'm not of legal drinking age and return to my duties, but he keeps harrassing me. My headset is hot so anyone else on channel B could hear what was going on, but instead of helping me or calling security the other spot op was just like 'ooooh you got a boyfriend oooh'. I'm a thick white girl, and I live in Detroit- so I'm used to being hit on and harrassed but the show is literally seconds from starting at this point and I want this guy gone. Act 2 starts and he's just kind of hovering around my station, but no longer bothering me, and then he starts taking pictures of the show. That's fine, we allow that, but I watch him out of the corner of my eye the best I can trying to keep up with the action on stage.
And then he starts taking pictures of me. With flash. From all angles.
He stops after a while as I'm literally shaking I'm so upset, and then the show ends and I fucking bolt to the back of the park, waiting so hopefully he goes away. He fucking doesn't for another half hour, so I had to just hide and let the other spot op break my shit down (serves him right) and then spend money on taking a Lyft home, because I wasn't gonna walk alone through Shankstown, USA back to midtown while some drunk dude with a picture of me was wandering the streets.
The executives of the company were at the info booth behind me counting donations, so they should've said something, I was so fucking livid. It's so shitty that even in my actual career, I have to deal with retail-esque shit like that.

Out Today! Ignite by Melanie Harlow
My new neighbor is a firefighter—and a scorching hot single dad—but I swear I didn’t set off that smoke alarm on purpose. Ignite, an all-new smoking hot, single dad romantic comedy from USA Today and #1 Amazon bestselling author Melanie Harlow, is available now! My new neighbor is a firefighter—and a scorching hot single dad—but I swear I didn’t set off that smoke alarm on purpose. (And I was beyond mortified when he rushed in and saw me naked.) Nothing happened, of course—because I, Winnie MacAllister, romance junkie and owner of a constantly broken heart, have sworn off men for one solid year. Even protective men with chiseled jaws, bulging biceps, and deep brown eyes that make my breath come faster. Even former SEALs with broad chests and strong hands that make my skin sizzle. Even gorgeous, grumpy guys who have their hands full raising two adorable little girls and claim they don’t believe in love. Until Dex kisses me one night, and I drop all my defenses. (Also my underwear.) He says he’s not gentle, and he’s right. He says I should take the dream job I’m offered in another state, and he’s right. He says he’s too old for me and could never be the man I deserve. He’s wrong. Dex and I might be twelve years apart, but the fire between us is the kind that will never burn out. How can I convince him to give happily-ever-after with me a chance? Fall in love with Winnie and Dex for ZERO PENNIES in Kindle Unlimited today!Amazon: https://amzn.to/3kePkO0Amazon Worldwide: http://mybook.to/IgniteHarlow Audio Coming Soon, narrated by Stephen Dexter & Kirsten Leigh Excerpt She looked a little nervous, not that I blamed her, as she held out a small pink box of Band-Aids. “I had these lying around and thought Luna might want them for her knee. Band-Aids sometimes come off in the shower, so . . .” I reached out and took them from her, noticing she was careful not to let our fingers touch this time. “Thanks.” “That’s it—I just wanted to—um, okay, have a good night.” She turned to leave, and I probably should have let her.“Wait a second.” She faced me again, her expression still wary. “I’m sorry about that.” I gestured over my shoulder with the pink box. “My ex-wife—the girls’ mom—knows how to get a rise out of me.” “Oh, that’s okay. It’s none of my business, and I didn’t really hear anything.” It was obvious she’d heard everything. I nodded slowly. “Well, thanks for the Band-Aids. Luna will appreciate it.” Her smile was back, along with that stutter in my chest. “Good. Enjoy your night.” “You too.” She turned around and went down the steps, cutting across the lawn to her place with that same youthful bounce in her step. Glancing down at the box, I shook my head—of course she had a whole thing of pink princess Band-Aids. I shut the door and trudged up the stairs to get the kids cleaned up. Hallie went first, after a brief attempt to get me to let her wear socks in the shower. As usual, I refused, explaining again that the entire house had been thoroughly cleaned before we moved in, and I’d been here yesterday to make sure of it. While she was getting dressed, I made sure Luna washed her hair and used soap, then helped her get dried off. After hanging up their towels, I double-checked that they’d chosen appropriate clothing and was just about to get in my own shower when I heard a series of high-pitched beeps. “What’s that?” Hallie said, scrunching up her face. Instantly on high alert, I put my hand up. “Shh.” I heard it again, and recognized it as a smoke detector going off, but not in our house—we were hearing it through the walls. “Stay here.” I raced out of their room and took the stairs down three at a time, jumping to the bottom with five to go. Barreling out my front door, I ran over to Winnie’s and knocked. The alarm was clearly coming from inside her unit, and when she didn’t answer the door, I made a split-second decision to bust in. Fortunately, the door wasn’t locked. I shouldered it open, relieved when I didn’t see or smell smoke right away. Winnie’s townhouse was laid out exactly like mine, and I immediately realized the detector going off was upstairs. Racing up the steps three at a time, I reached the master bedroom doorway just in time to see Winnie climbing onto a suitcase, one hand reaching toward the ceiling to disconnect the unit. My jaw dropped. She was totally naked and dripping wet.One hand was clutching a small towel to her chest that didn’t fucking hide anything . Behind her, steam from her shower billowed from her bathroom, which must have been what set off the alarm—some detectors are that sensitive. Behind me, I heard clamoring on the stairs, and a second later both Hallie and Luna rushed into the bedroom. Startled, Winnie looked over and saw us. Her eyes went wide as she screamed, lost her footing, and toppled backward off the suitcase. She landed hard on her ass, arms and legs flailing like a rag doll. Averting my eyes, I strode over and disconnected the unit while she scrambled toward the bathroom on her hands and knees, presumably in search of a bigger towel. But then she slammed the door . . . and didn’t come out. The eighty-five decibel alarm had ceased, but the sirens in my head continued.I looked at the girls. Luna had her hands over her mouth. Hallie’s eyes were wide, and she pointed to the bathroom door. “Winnie was naked,” she whispered. “We saw her bum.” “Quiet,” I scolded angrily. “You two were supposed to stay at our house. You didn’t follow my orders.” “But Daddy, we were scared,” Luna said. Her hair was still wet and tangled. “We came to find you.”“We’ll talk about it later, but when I tell you to stay put, you stay put-especially in an emergency. Understand?” They nodded. “Now go back to our house, both of you.”“But what about Winnie? Is she okay?”I went over to the bathroom door and knocked, trying not to picture her naked. The shower wasn’t running anymore. “Winnie? Are you okay?” “I’m fine!” “Are you hurt?” “I’m fine!” she repeated in the same false, bright tone. A tiny smile inched onto my lips. “Are you sure?” About Melanie HarlowUSA Today bestselling author Melanie Harlow likes her martinis dry, her heels high, and her history with the naughty bits left in. It’s long over but I can’t help finish #GlobeFacts ala Easter traditions around the world. Hungary. "Sprinkling," a popular Hungarian Easter tradition, is observed on Easter Monday, which is also known as "Ducking Monday." Boys playfully sprinkle perfume or perfumed water on girls. Young men used to pour buckets of water over young women's heads, but now they spray perfume, cologne or just plain water, and ask for a kiss. People used to believe that water had a cleaning, healing and fertility-inducing effect. Jerusalem. Taking place in the city where it is believed Jesus was crucified, Christians celebrate Good Friday by walking the same path Jesus did on the day he was nailed to the cross. Taking note of his pain that fateful day, some of those who participate carry a cross with them in remembrance. On Easter Sunday, many pilgrims attend a church service at Garden Tomb—the area it is believed Jesus was buried. Sicily, Italy. In Prizzi, Sicily, "the Abballu de daivuli is a representation of devils from locals wearing terrifying masks of zinc and dressed in red robes," according to The Telegraph. Those dressed in costume pester as many "souls" as they can (which really means making them pay for drinks) before the afternoon when the Virgin Mary and the risen Christ save the day by sending the devils away with angels. Washington DC, USA. For over 130 years, the White House has hosted the Easter Egg Roll on its South Lawn. The main activity involves rolling a colored hard-boiled egg with a large serving spoon, but now the event boasts many more amusements, like musical groups, an egg hunt, sports and crafts. #EasterFacts via WomansDay. Globe : 36cm diameter globe in progress in Glacial Blue.

Rivals
You attend a football game between your own university and its rival, Silver Creek Institute. At the game, you meet a super sweet guy, Park Woojin. However, you soon realize that maybe you didn’t know everything you needed to about him.
for an anon who requested a romeo and juliet fic without death
based off of the usa university system
You stared at your reflection in the mirror, tugging the red and white beanie further onto your head. Your huge t-shirt, emblazoned with the huge words “UNIVERSITY OF GATEWAY”, was equally as red and white. Behind you, your best friend Kang Daniel struggled to shove his white “UoG” cap over his freshly dyed red hair.
It was the day you’d all been waiting for—the day that your own university, University of Gateway—faced off against its rival, Silver Creek Institute, in the royal game of football. While you knew nothing about football, you definitely had school pride, and Daniel’s friends had gotten tickets to the big game.
“(y/n), Daniel, you guys ready to go?” Seongwoo asked, holding up the car keys in his hand. His entire face had been painted red in honor of the game that night, and next to him stood Jisung, carrying a huge cooler of drinks.
“Let’s do this!” Daehwi yelled loudly, excited for his first UoG vs SCI game.
The seven of you trudged out to Jisung’s van, everyone settling in for the ride to the stadium.
The streets were packed with other UoG students dressed in their red and white gear, making noise and screaming in preparation for the big game. The stadium was already packed as well, and the seven of you had to fight your way to get to your seats.
“It’s so noisy,” Daehwi complained, trying to cover his ears. Seongwoo laughed, promptly yelling louder along with the current chant of the UoG side. Normally for football games like this one, half of the stadium was where the UoG students sat, the other half was reserved for SCI.
“Get used to it, buddy,” you yelled above the loud din of the chanting, “this is only the beginning.”
As the game started and the noise got louder, you got into the game, waving around the red and white pom-pom that Jihoon had handed you enthusiastically (and occasionally hitting him in the face). The game was close, and by half-time, UoG only had a seven point lead, leaving everyone sitting on the edges of their seats.
The cheerleaders began streaming onto the field, a signal that the half-time show was starting. While your friends definitely wanted to watch the hottest girls of UoG dancing on a football field, you decided that you’d go grab something to drink from the concession stand.
“Hey, Jisung, do you guys want anything?” You yelled loudly, leaning over to ask your friend, “I’m gonna go get something to drink!”
“I’m okay,” Jisung replied, “take my hoodie, though, it’s getting cold outside.” You took the offered hoodie, sliding it over your head. The black hoodie caught on your beanie and you yanked the hat off, shoving it onto Daehwi’s head instead.
“Wait, buy me some French friends,” Jihoon yelled, handing you a couple bills, “Thanks bud.”
“Yeah, no problem,” you yelled back, doing your best to get out of your seat and out to the large open area where the concession stands were. The line was super long, winding around the open space all the way to the entrance to the main stadium, and you sighed, taking your place at the back of the line.
To amuse yourself while waiting, you pulled out your phone, checking your Snapchat to see if anything interesting was happening. Just as you were replying to Jihoon’s snap of an ugly selfie, you felt someone pull you back sharply.
“Woah, careful,” someone exclaimed, and you watched as an entire slushee was emptied on the spot where you had just been standing. “Dude, you’d drunk as hell, go home.”
The guy who’d thrown the slushee meandered off, grumbling under his breath, which gave you time to turn around and face your savior, the guy who was standing behind you in line.
“Thank you so much,” you said, smiling at the guy, a tall dude with honey blonde/brown hair and a snaggletooth. “I dunno what I would have done if I had to sit through the second half of this game with a wet, icy shirt.”
“No problem,” he smiled back, stepping forward as the line slowly inched forward.
“I’m (y/n),” you introduced, holding out your hand to shake.
“Woojin,” he replied, taking your hand and giving it a shake. Normally, you weren’t one for clichés, but you could have sworn you felt an electric shock as his slightly calloused large hand grasped your own.
“So, you were sent by your friends to collect the supplies?” you asked teasingly, looking down at the huge wad of cash he had in his hand. Woojin held it up with a chuckle.
“I’m the second youngest in our group,” he replied, shaking his head, “and our youngest never actually does what a dongsaeng is supposed to do, so getting the food naturally fell to me.”
“Ah,” you nodded with a grin, “I’m here out of free will, unfortunately.”
The two of you continued to talk, finding a lot of common ground. Woojin seemed to be into the same artists as you, and you two liked similar TV shows. He was funny, albiet a bit dorky, but it was pleasant to stand in line and just talk with him.
As you were walking away from the food stand, coke and Jihoon’s French fries in your arms, you heard Woojin shout your name.
Holding a huge bag of food, he jogged up to you, breathing heavily. “Hey, um, I normally don’t do this,” he said sheepishly, readjusting the heavy back of junk food so that it was easier to carry, “but is there any way I could get your number? Talking to you was really fun.” He looked at you hopefully, cursing as the soda cup in one hand started to slip.
You smiled up at Woojin, taking out your phone, “sure!” The two of you quickly exchanged numbers, and you watched as Woojin hurried off, struggling to carry all the food that his hyungs had ordered.
Smiling to yourself, you headed back to your own seat.
“What’s got you so happy?” Jisung asked suspiciously, stealing one of Jihoon’s French fries.
“Nothing, nothing,” you shook your head, trying to suppress your smile as you thought about how cute Woojin was when he was flustered.
“So wait,” Jihoon looked over at Seongwoo in suspicion, “there’s gonna be kids from other colleges at this party as well?”
Seongwoo rolled his eyes, nodding slowly, “I swear, I’ve explain this like, a thousand times. Yes, there’s gonna be kids from other colleges.”
Daehwi looked up from the couch, hopeful that maybe he could tag along for once.
“Not today, Daehwi-ah,” Jisung ruffled Daehwi’s blonde hair with a giggle, “you’re staying in with hyung tonight.”
“Who all’s gonna be there?” You asked lazily, looking up from your phone. You’d been texting Woojin furiously about the latest episode of Show Me the Money, only half-paying attention to the conversation about the party you and your friends were attending that night.
“Some kids from Pleasant Hills Uni, Littlewood Tech and SCI,” Seongwoo responded casually.
“SCI?” Jihoon groaned, “as in UoG’s rival, SCI?”
“Yes, you oaf,” Seongwoo replied, flicking Jihoon’s forehead, “just because we’re rivals doesn’t mean they know how to throw a mean party.”
“I guess,” Jihoon grumbled, clearly not too happy with the news.
“We should leave soon, though,” Daniel said, checking the time on his phone, “I don’t wanna get there too late.”
Instead of taking Jisung’s van, you all ended up in Seongwoo’s car, since there were less of you. He insisted on blaring Bruno Mars at an obnoxiously loud volume, and when you pulled up outside of the house where the party was held, someone threw a beer can at the car.
“Fucking loser,” Daniel snickered as Seongwoo frowned, examining the damage done to his car (there was none).
The four of you trudged up the path that wound through the lawn, leading to the wide-open door.
“Hey guys, welcome to Bonfire Night,” someone greeted you as you entered, “drinks are in the kitchen, dancing is in the back where the bonfire is.”
“When you said bonfire party,” you murmured to Seongwoo, “somehow, I didn’t imagine a couch would be on fire.” Once the four of you had gotten drinks, you headed out to the backyard, where the ‘bonfire’ was—it turned out to be a couch, amongst other things, that had been lit on fire.
“Hey, the UoG fuckers showed up!” Someone yelled loudly, prompting cheers from the crowd. You snickered at the use of the term ‘fuckers’, following Daniel and Jihoon to a large group of people.
“Hey Taedong, whaddup?” Daniel greeted, exchanging the classic bro-hug/shake/pound.
“All that’s left is the little fucks from SCI, then this party’s really gonna get started,” you recognized Kim Donghan as he yelled loudly, lifting his beer can above his head.
Laughing, you took a seat next to Daniel, tucking your legs up to shield yourself from the chilly night air.
“This is the party?” Daniel asked Seongwoo, gesturing to the backyard. While it was fun, with people milling around and dancing, it definitely wasn’t the super lit night that Seongwoo had promised.
“Yes bitch, this is the party,” Seongwoo retorted. As your two friends started bickering, you pulled out your phone to text Woojin.
To: pwj
The party my friends dragged me to sucks ugh
I could be at home watching criminal minds
Adfksfoirefks get me out of here omg
>>I’m headed to party as well haha
>>my hyungs wouldn’t take no for an answer
You smiled, and were about to type out a response when someone yelled loudly.
“SCI finally showed up!” Donghan cheered. Daniel stiffened next to you, and you heard Jihoon ‘boo’ from the other side of Seongwoo.
“Fuck SCI,” Seongwoo shouted playfully, and you watched as one of the recently arrived guys from SCI glared at him. As your eyes drifted over the group of newcomers, one of them caught your attention, causing a chill to run down your spine. Park Woojin stood with the others from Silver Creek Institute, the name of your rival university standing out proudly on his navy blue t-shirt.

Anyone for tennis?

THE NORTH DULWICH LAWN TENNIS CLUB PRIDES ITSELF ON ITS FRIENDLY AND INCLUSIVE ATMOSPHERE – AND NEW MEMBERS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME
WORDS: LUKE G WILLIAMS; PHOTO: MARK RUSHER
Tucked away down a narrow, green pathway off East Dulwich Grove that it’s easy to pass by without noticing, the North Dulwich Lawn Tennis Club (NDLTC) possesses a touch of magic on the chilly and crisp April evening when I pay a visit to chat to committee member Ian Hirst.
Emerging from the pathway into the club is like stumbling into a hidden world – NDLTC is a tree-lined oasis of calm overlooking the platforms of North Dulwich Station, with the permanent soundtrack of tennis balls pinging off rackets forming a reassuring backdrop.
The club comprises four well-maintained hard tennis courts – replete with floodlights to allow for evening matches during the dark days of a British winter – a homely clubhouse and a “practice wall”.
Above all else though, it’s the club’s friendly and informal ethos that makes a deep impression, turning on its head the frequent stereotype that tennis clubs are socially exclusive and snotty enclaves.
“It’s very informal and relaxed, and while there are lots of opportunities for competitive matches and we have some great players, our main focus is on inclusivity and social play,” Ian explains. “There’s no dress code or anything like that, and everyone mixes together.
“However, we can’t rely on or take anything for granted. We are always thinking of ways to make sure the club is accessible and welcoming.
“For example, we recently introduced a buddy system, so that we match any new members with existing members to help them get settled in.
“People seem to join for one of two reasons: they want to keep fit or they’ve moved to the area and want to make friends. That was the case for me when I joined the club a couple of years ago.
“It can be quite daunting joining a new club so we’re constantly trying to make it easier for people who want to get involved. We always make sure we are friendly and welcoming when new people join up.”
NDLTC currently has around 250 adult members and 100-plus junior members, and runs a series of annual tournaments in addition to the regular teams who compete in senior and junior leagues.
It’s thought that NDLTC has been in existence for several decades, but the exact date of its inception is currently unclear.
“One of our members has been looking into the origins of the club for about six months,” Ian reveals. “So watch this space!
“The club has certainly been here for longer than any of our members can remember – and we have one member who turned 90 last year and still comes along on Sundays to hit the ball against the wall and occasionally also has a game with us.”
It’s an anecdote that perfectly sums up the club’s emphasis on tennis as a social and fun activity. “We have a lot of social tennis, where you don’t need to book a court, you just show up,” Ian says.
Young players and members are also encouraged. “Every Saturday morning we run back-to-back coaching sessions for kids, while a group of us take it in turns to run the canteen and cafe. Our juniors start really young – just six years old.”
Each year the club also arranges a host of social events, with the recent inaugural NDLTC Mixed Davis Cup having proved particularly successful.
The cup took place on March 30 and supported the fundraising efforts of club members Ian Poole and Lucy Pickles, who are running the London Marathon to raise money for VICTA and Leukaemia UK.
The event saw 40 competitors split into eight teams of five players and randomly assigned to one of eight nations: France, Australia, Serbia, Brazil, South Africa, USA, Spain and India.
The players were encouraged to sport attire relevant to their adopted nation and also brought along homemade food to share, including spinach pie from Serbia, tapas from Spain, biltong from South Africa and feijoada (a black bean stew) from Brazil.
“We hope to make it an annual event, supporting a different local charity each year,” Ian says. “It was a really fun and successful event. We had people wandering in from the streets to see what was going on because they saw all the flags.
“We raised over £2,200 for VICTA and Leukaemia UK through entry fees, a barbecue, raffle and a cake sale with generous donations from competitors, guests and local businesses. It was brilliant how many local businesses in Dulwich sponsored or donated items for the raffle for the event. We were overwhelmed by the response we had.”
Local links are important to the club, which is seeking to expand its already impressive work supporting and facilitating wider access to tennis within the local community.
“We are absolutely committed to our community work,” Ian says. “We host the Southwark schools’ tennis finals day each year. The Charter School uses our club on a Thursday afternoon for tennis coaching that we organise. We also host sessions for the University of the Third Age on Fridays as well. And we’d like to do even more in the future.”
The club is also looking at ways to increase female participation. “We are very keen on encouraging more female tennis players,” Ian says, “particularly girls, who sometimes seem to give up playing at around the age of 10 or 11. A couple of our female members are also acting as great role models to encourage our thriving junior section.”
A further challenge for the future is continuing to redevelop and improve the club’s facilities.
“We recently successfully funded a new roof, and now we want to replace our toilet and changing block with something more modern and comfortable for people, especially schools and [also have] better disabled access,” Ian explains.
“We’re in the process of meeting with architects about that and then we will look at getting funding together. That’s one of our next steps as a club and will probably take a few years.”
Of course, none of these events, or the club itself, would be possible without the countless hours of work and commitment that members of the club’s active committee devote to NDLTC.
“Being involved with the club is a real labour of love,” Ian emphasises, sentiments which are clear from leafing through the handsome and glossy 32-page club newsletter that is produced every six months.
“No one is paid for their work or anything like that, but thanks to a lot of volunteering we make the club work.”

Assassin’s creed modern au headcanons part 3
So, my first two post about how Assassin’s Creed would be if they lived in a little weirdly liberal town are my most liked posts. I am happy. So, I decided to do a THIRD PART (I was planning to do at least five parts anyway, so...). This one lists off the DLC’s characters, the Chronicles crew and Arno’s teammates.
Adewalé
In their young years, he and Edward were partners in crime. He is now like him: retired.
Unlike Edward, the 82 years old man has a thing called common sense when it comes to his dressing style. Meaning he dresses in clothes appropriate for his age. He also prefers warm colors.
He used to do parkour in his young age, but is now too old for that. He kept his blue fancy but practical coat, however.
He used to be Edward second-in-command before becoming the captain of his own ship. The last mission he had with Edward was the one involving the human-selling ring.
He had a brief escapade with Bastienne Josèphe and a son with her, Babatunde, but that’s about it.
He’s literally the only one seeing how much of a nerd Edward is with the son of the last one, Haytham. He’s also the one holding Edward on a leash (I think)
Jack
An orphan who admires Jacob (he’s a child in this)
Most of the time, he wears an over-sized button-up shirt with shorts and shoes.
Since he tries to emulate Jacob, he wears a black jacket when he’s  trying to do “Parkour” (really climbing everything in his line of sight)
He’s a child. He just goes to school right now.
No, he doesn’t have a girlfriend. He’s really shy.
He shows signs of being a sociopath, but it’s a little early to tell...
Lydia (DIDN’T EXPECT HER, HUH? HUH?!)
She’s Jacob and Evie little sister.
She tries to emulate both of them, but she just wears t-shirts with prints on them and jackets tied around her waist right now.
When Jacob takes her out to learn Parkour, she puts her favorite green jacket with a huge hood on.
She’s a child and going to school. Like a child.
Sam Crowder, a kid in her class, has a little crush on her.
She’s already showing up signs of being a strong, if little, lady who can do her things alone!
Shao
She moved from China to be able to pursue her studies without the pressure of getting an husband.
She likes dark clothing. She’s not a goth. She just really likes black.
She puts on a black hoodie with red, Chinese pattern when doing parkour.
She’s a student right now, and plans on going into the secret services latter.
She does not desire to be in a relationship. Keep it away from her, please.
She’s literally the only girl besides his mother and sister that Ezio never tried to flirt with. Actually, he acts like an overprotective brother toward her. She doesn’t complain since he also give her a quiet place to study in his house, but it’s a little gratting...
Arbaaz
The chill father from India with a child and a wife.
He wears light colored clothes with a red scarf heavily inspired by his home.
He wears more... flashy clothes when doing parkour...
...or acrobatics, since his job is the one of a circus performer.
It’s okay, his wife, Pyara Kaur, used to be a princess anyway. They’re rich!
He used to be a thief in his young age and stole a diamond, the Koh-I-Noor, from a bunch of rich British men who were passing through. He afterwards sold it to shady men in hoods. It’s only upon meeting Pyara that he stopped stealing. D’awww...
Nikolai
The russian veteran from war who lost everything to the Cold War
He’s always in impossibly warm clothing with outlines of fur. Always. It’s to the point Altair calls his clothes “tacky”. Friendly reminder that Altair wears five layers.
He used to do Parkour, has far-fetched has it sounds. Yes, he wore a warm coat, why?
He’s a retired soldier, more precisely a sniper, who suffered a lot from the Cold war. His wife died during the middle of the conflict when he tried to quit the army to take care of his childrens, and they died at the end, leaving him with his grandson, Daniel Cross.
He used to have a wife.
The thing that was the Cold War made him despise Russia, and he moved to the USA once he could with Daniel, who was a baby at the time. He’s now a grumpy, 70 years old man and you better not touch his fucking lawn. It’s not so much as he hates young people these days, but he isolates himself and does not want to talk to anyone unless necessary.
Edgard
The angry German man who becomes even angrier if you mention Nazi Germany to him outside of history classes.
He dresses has a goddamn lumberjack. Mainly flannels. And gloves.
He does parkour, yes. He usually wears a brown leather jacket over his flannels when doing it.
He’s an odd job man. If you need something, he’ll do it. Your cat is stuck in a tree? Sure, he’ll get it down for you, kid. Your fireplace is clogged? He’ll find out what’s wrong with it and fix it, don’t worry. Your probable boyfriend is having a nervous breakdown and needs aspirin but you can’t leave him? He’ll get the aspirin for you. All he asks is a little money in exchange. In depends on how difficult the job was.
He’s not interested in romance. At all.
The fact that he is angry at literally everything doesn’t stop him from being a good person. The proof? When his good friend Arno had an extremely bad day and didn’t got out of bed the next morning, he rushed there to see if he was okay. Upon seeing he was not okay, he literally spent the next six hours baking baguettes while chatting with him, asking him things to make sure he would be okay.
Agape
The half-romanian, half-french slight pyromaniac hypersexual homosexual. I swear this makes more sense in context. And that he’s a nice person.
He’s a modern gypsy. He generally puts on a cream-colored shirt (long sleeved or short sleeved, depends on the temperature) ripped jeans and decorates the all with colorful trinkets.
He takes the trinkets off when doing parkour. He also puts on a beige long coat if the temperature is chilly
He’s a street performer. He does dances on the street for money and is fairly successful. He also use his gypsy heritage to act as a fortune teller from time to time. At worst, he’ll mooch off Arno and Edgard.
He’s about has successful in bed as Ezio; bedded a third of the homosexual men in his town. It pisses people off just as much. The only difference is that he’s now in a committed relationship with Thomas and is faithful.
No seriously, he’s a nice person, if a little disconnected from reality. When he sees that someone is sad, he’ll stop doing everything just to give them a shoulder to cry on. He knows what it’s like to be sad and alone, and doesn’t want that for anyone.
Thomas
The lazy french genius who is childhood friend with Arno and Élise’s personal butler.
He wears his work uniform on a daily basis.
He has a green coat that makes him look awesome and that he absolutely adores. He wears it when doing parkour.
He’s a student trying to get his master in pharmacy to become a pharmacist. To pay for his studies, he works as a servant in the De La Serre household, which also provides him with a roof.
He’s demisexual and in a relationship with Agape. It’s really sweet.
He’s just so lazy. And in his quest to be lazy, he ends up doing things that just complicate his life even if these things are successful. Example: he was once asked to do the dishes. He tried to fake his death. He succeeded. He woke up during his own funerals and freaked out everyone. He is no longer asked to do the dishes.

Jade Lee's Winning a Bride (Part 1)
Tumblr media
From USA Today bestselling author Jade Lee comes a hot Regency novella about a second son who has lost everything...and the lady who makes him want to win it all back. Due to his aristocratic family’s downfall, William Benton serves as steward on the land his brother should have inherited. His one weakness is for the daughter of the new owner. Josephine Lawton is beautiful, charming, and enamored of titles and all things aristocratic. So when she becomes engaged to a man he knows to be a wastrel and a fool, Will puts all his passion into restoring his family’s honor and winning the woman he loves. It’s going to be a hot summer on the estate.
  Chapter 1
Masochists were a sorry lot. And he, William Benton, second son of the useless Crowles, was the sorriest of them all. Why? Not for the usual reasons, but because he was smart enough to see his foolishness and yet was still unable to stop himself. He was watching the girl. Watching, for God’s sake. When he was accounted as a man who did things. Not today, and never with her. Rather than act, he always stood in the shadows and watched like a damn Peeping Tom. He’d been on the way to see her father, but then had seen a flash of color. Her bright reddish hair, of course, and her dress. Then he’d heard her laugh. It was unmistakable, that throaty combination of girlish delight and womanly seduction—flying free on the afternoon breeze. She was on the back lawn, and he had skirted the manor home so he could see her. He wasn’t surprised to see her playing with the village children. She couldn’t have arrived from London more than a couple hours before, but the little ones always found her. That’s because she was more kin to them than the adults who watched critically from the sidelines. She was playing tag, running around pell-mell and with her bonnet off, no less. Her hair was pulling free, of course. Nothing about her was ever restrained. The sun picked up the streaks of red in her auburn hair until she seemed crowned in fire. Her dress was equally vibrant: a yellow so bright he wondered how the dye master had managed the color. And she was running in careening circles until the children finally caught her. He counted seven of them as they surrounded her until she had nowhere to run. Then in one mass, they jumped on her and she went down to the grass in squealing laughter. For a woman on the hunt for a husband, she was completely undignified and he couldn’t have adored her more. No, he reminded himself, he despised her just as she despised him. It was a well-established feeling, their mutual dislike years in the making. It had begun during the midsummer festival nearly five years ago when he’d loudly and publicly tossed her aside. What he’d said to her still haunted him: Don’t mistake things here, Miss Josephine. We all want you back in London, permanently. You don’t belong here and you never will. He’d said the words and meant them because God knew having her here was like looking at a sparkling diamond that he could never have. Or worse, a meal to a starving man, but one held too far away for him to reach. So he wished her in London, and that sentiment would not change just because her laugh seemed to settle uncomfortably at the base of his spine. He sighed, reminding himself that he needed to go see her father. And yet he didn’t move as he stood watching from the shadows. He was fresh from the ditch, covered in Yorkshire mud, and smelling of sweat or worse. The summons had come from her father—Lord Lawton—and he’d been told not to tarry. Those were the exact words: do not tarry. As if he spent his days sipping tea and reading the racing forms. He was a steward, for God’s sake, trying to build a canal while overseeing the crops. So he had climbed out of the muck and ridden over to the manor house. A fit of pique had him appearing in his filth without more than a cursory mop of his brow. After all, he’d been told not to tarry. Let Lord Lawton suffer the consequences of his ridiculous order. Except he was tarrying. Right here in the shadows as Miss Josephine Powel played chase and catch with the village children. With a grimace, he turned away. She was not for him, nor did he want her. So he tromped over to the servants’ entrance before stripping out of his boots to walk in stocking feet to visit his employer. Lord Lawton looked up the moment Will was ushered into the library. “That was quicker than…” His voice trailed off as he took in his steward’s attire. “You did say not to tarry,” Will responded, doing his best to keep his irritation out of his voice. Lawton frowned. “No, actually I didn’t.” Then he glanced out at the hallway with a grimace. “Bloody butler. Loves issuing orders in my name, doesn’t he? Are you sure I can’t fire him?” Will ducked his head. “You can, of course, do exactly as you please.” After all, that’s what his own forefathers had done. “But—” Lawton waved him to silence. “I know. He’s the village’s bloody Rock of Gibraltar. Seems to me that would be you, but you northerners have your own rules.” The man leaned back in his chair in a huff. “I take it you were at the canal.” Will nodded and settled more firmly into his stance. “Work is proceeding. It’s slow, dirty, and exhausting, but we’ve made good progress. We’ll have it all connected up next year for sure.” “Think you can get it done by September? I’ll give the men a bonus.” Will felt his jaw go slack in astonishment. “No bonus can make a miracle, my lord. Rain’s good for the crops, but we’re slogging through mud. If we get a drenching, we lose a week’s worth of work.” Lord Lawton nodded. “But if the rains hold off. If the weather’s good—” “We don’t have the men.” “So I’ll bring in more.” “Then you’ll get too much money flooding the village,” Will snapped. Then he flushed, moderating his tone as he ducked his head. “But it’s your choice, my lord.” Lawton wasn’t fooled by Will’s attempt at humility. He frowned, but as he was a temperate man, that was the extent of his disapproval. “Wouldn’t a lot of money be a blessing?” he asked dryly. Will tamped down his temper. This man didn’t deserve it, and Will couldn’t afford to release it. Besides, it didn’t matter what he said. The man would do what he intended no matter how Will tried to dissuade him. Such was the way with the titled. Always having ideas, always refusing to listen to those who knew better. Still, he had to explain his thoughts. Maybe Lawton would be different. “There’s a rhythm and a balance to life up here. It’s not what you’re used to.” His employer agreed with a soft grunt. “I’ve seen it before when workers flood a village. It upsets things. We’ve a sleepy hamlet up here. Bad enough that people are worried about what the canal will do—” “Wake it up a bit, I should think.” “Yes, but in a slow way. Next year gives people time to anticipate. To look at their coffers and be more amenable to change. Force that change now and it upsets everything. Especially adding in strangers with tempers. Supplies will run short. Do you sell the last shirt to the stranger or to Mr. Garret for his standing summer order?” “You make another shirt.” Will shook his head. “Doesn’t work that smoothly, my lord, and you know it.” He huffed out a breath, knowing he had to say it all. “The thing is, we’ve already had problems. Supplies running short, missing tools.” Lawton sat up, his gaze sharp. “Sabotage?” Will shrugged, unwilling to acknowledge what was probably truth. These were his friends and neighbors, people he’d grown up with and worked alongside his entire life. So he lied, moderating it as best he could. “Mischief, more like. And nothing I can’t handle, assuming we go slow.” Lord Lawton rubbed his chin with his hand. “What if I made it worth your while to see that it went faster?” Will felt his belly clench tight. There was only one thing he wanted, and Lawton wasn’t going to give her to him for finishing a bloody canal. For a moment, her laugh—the one that had settled at the base of his spine—sent a tingling rush through his body. But he shut that out of his thoughts. Fortunately, he had long practice doing that. “It just can’t be done,” he said, even as his mind began considering possibilities. “Poppycock. If I get you the men?” Will shook his head. “Just because it can be done, doesn’t make it smart.” He studied Lawton, trying to judge the man’s game. “Why would you do this? Why the hurry?” The man frowned and his gaze wandered out the window to where his daughter continued to run wild with the children. “She turned twenty-six a month ago, did you know that?” He had, but it wasn’t seemly for him to say so. “Felicitations to you and her. She’s a lovely woman.” “Of course she is,” he said, but it was clear that the man’s mind wasn’t on his daughter’s beauty. “But do you know the one thing she did not get for her birthday? The one thing she should have had years ago, but never received?” Will swallowed. He could think of any number of things, but he just shook his head. “No, my lord.” “A wedding ring. She’s twenty-six, Will. Twenty-bloody-six. Heard a gent refer to her as an ape-leader. Nearly called the man out.” Will stiffened, anger surging below the surface. “Ape-leader” wasn’t just a term for an old maid. It implied that her unmarried state was her own fault and she’d be punished in the afterlife by leading apes into hell. It was wrong on so many levels, and he was angry on her behalf. “I would have punched him myself,” said Will. Lawton snorted, a dark look on the man’s heavy features. “Fortunately, Josephine is not your concern. She never has been and never will be.” Will understood the message: the Lawton daughters were off limits. Most specifically, Josephine was not meant for a second son of the feckless Crowles. Lord Lawton had made that message clear every summer since he’d purchased the land. So Will swallowed his pride and gave a socially acceptable response, even as his gaze was drawn inevitably back out the window to her. “She’s no ape leader. Surely she’s had offers.” “None that were acceptable to either of us.” He leaned back. “It’s the Welsh blood, I think. Makes her wild, and no one in London likes wild.” “Not in their women,” Will said. The London men, on the other hand, seemed to turn wildness into an art. “Hmmm,” was Lawton’s only response as he too stared out at his eldest daughter. She was spinning on the lawn. The children were too, but it was Josephine who turned the fastest, her hair and her skirts flying outward. Will couldn’t stop himself from looking at her trim ankles and neat calves. Any man would look, and every man could with the way she was spinning. Eventually her speed got the best of her. She stumbled and went down, her laughter carrying through the walls. Will couldn’t see her face, but he knew what she would look like. Her cheeks and her lips would be red, her brown eyes would seem to shine from the sun, and her hair would be a wild tangle in the grass. He’d seen her as such many a time. Only once in truth, but a thousand times more at night when he closed his eyes. She was a rare beauty, Lawton’s wild eldest daughter, and Will’s loins tightened at just the thought of her. So he did what he always did when he wanted something he couldn’t have: he brought up a hatred of it. He reminded himself of all the flaws in a woman who would flash her legs to any man who passed. And in this way he got through the moment. Until his employer turned back to him, his tone brusque. “It was nearly five years ago that I bought this land from your brother. My plan was very clear at the time. I meant to build the canal and turn this sleepy land into a byway for the future.” He snorted. “I never counted on Yorkshire stubbornness.” “We are a hardheaded lot.” Lawton sighed again, his eyes again shifting to his daughter. Rather than get lost in her, Will kept his eyes downcast. Meanwhile, his employer continued talking. “I promised your brother I’d wait five years to sell this land. I know he meant to buy it back and reestablish the Crowle name. Those years will be up in August. Does Grant have the money?” Will blinked, startled dumb for the first time in years. His brother had negotiated to buy the land back? What… foresight! Not something he usually associated with his mercurial brother. The shock on his face must have shown because Lord Lawton’s brows came down in a dark look. “You didn’t know, did you?” Will slowly shook his head. Had his brother Grant really meant to reestablish the family fortune? He thought back to the day of his sister’s wedding, that horrible day and the worse night afterward. It was the night Grant had sold everything that wasn’t tied down. It was his brother’s right, of course, but it still stung, especially since Will had been steward here since boyhood. “Grant…” He had to clear his throat. “Grant said a lot of things that day. Promises, as usual. Nothing of substance.” Lord Lawton grimaced. “That’s the way with gamblers. Make lots of promises, mean them too, but…” Will nodded. “I learned early not to put my trust in promises.” It had been his father who had been faithless, but Grant had shown every sign of walking in their sire’s drunken footsteps. “So you haven’t heard from your brother?” “Not a word.” “I saw him last year. Looked bad, to tell the truth. Said he’d had some sort of sickness, but was coming out of it. Wearing clothes that hung on him. Sad to see, if I’m honest.” Will didn’t want to ask, didn’t want to hope, but it was there. A strange flickering belief in his older brother that he knew would be squashed. Still, he had to ask. “Did Grant… did he say anything?” About coming home? About buying back the land? About anything? Lawton grimaced. “You’ve heard nothing? You haven’t seen him? What about holidays?” “Nothing.” Lawton sighed. “He said he would have the money, Will. He said he would, but…” “You didn’t believe him.” “He didn’t have the look of a man with the blunt he’d need.” No, his brother always looked like a charming ne’er-do-well. Which was exactly what the man was: a rogue with good intentions but nothing solid about him. Nothing solid at all. “I’ll… uh, I’ll try to contact him,” Will said. Though God only knew how he’d manage that. The family solicitor, he supposed. Then Lord Lawton took that worry from him. “Don’t bother. Sent a letter myself to his solicitor. Told him the five years are almost up and I need an answer.” Will felt his hands clench by his sides as a useless fury built inside him. This was Crowle land being so casually dispensed, and by a Welsh lord, no less. Grant had sold the land nearly five years ago, and now it was about to be sold again. Again! And just like before, Will had absolutely no say in the matter. None at all, when it had been his sweat, his blood, and his every waking moment that had made this place the haven it was. The unfairness of it all burned down his spine, easily destroying every other thought—every other sensation—in his body. “Don’t you want to know what I’m planning to do?” Lord Lawton asked. Will had to force the words through his constricted throat, but he got them out. “Isn’t my place to ask.” Lawton smiled, appreciation lightening the weight around his eyes. “That’s a Yorkshire man for you. Knows his place even when questions are burning a hole through his gut.” Will didn’t answer. He was, after all, a good Yorkshireman, and so he kept his peace. “All right, I’ll tell you.” He dropped his hands on his belly and grinned. Here was a man who was pleased with himself. “All this land—the manor house and the canal properties—all of it goes into her dowry. If your brother finds a way to buy it, the money will go to Josephine. If he can’t, then it’ll be the land in her dowry.” Will’s head shot up, shock making his jaw drop. The whole property? All the former Crowle lands would be given to the man she married? Possibilities churned through his mind, none of them honorable. After all, he’d tried for nearly five years to court the girl honestly. Her father had steadfastly refused. But could he afford his principles when he could recover the entire Crowle fortune in one easy stroke? Meanwhile, Lawton was watching him closely with narrowed eyes. The bastard knew what Will was thinking and just as quickly, he dashed all hopes. “The land’s a promise right now. I won’t make it legal until the day she’s wed.” Wed to a man of Lawton’s choosing. Which would never be Will. So he buttoned his lip and looked down at the floor. “Just so,” the man said, obviously pleased that his message had gotten across. Then he abruptly leaned forward, gathering a stack of papers on his desk. “But I don’t mean you to think I don’t appreciate what you’ve done. If it weren’t for you, we’d have been run off this land that first summer. I know that. You’ve been a good steward and a good man, protecting my family even when everyone else called us interlopers.” “You bought the land honestly,” he said, pushing the words through though his throat felt unbearably tight. “Can’t have a man’s family harmed just because the villagers don’t like change.” “Well, I mean to give you a real chance, Will. Your brother’s a fool, and your father too, but you’re made of sterner stuff. If any man can do what needs to be done, it’s you.” Will looked up. “I don’t understand, my lord.” “This land—this bloody Yorkshire land—it’s worthless without that canal.” Will bristled, needing to defend the land of his birth. “It’s not worthless, my lord. It’s just not worth as much.” “Well, I need to get my girl wed. These damn Seasons are bleeding me dry, but the land right now isn’t enough of a dowry. It needs to be profitable land.” Will swallowed, finally understanding. “That’s why you want the canal finished by September. You need to show that the canal is done and working properly.” Lawton nodded. “That’s right. And that’s where you come in. You’ve got to complete it by the beginning of the fall Season.” “Can’t be done, my lord.” “Are you sure?” Lawton challenged as he offered up the stack of papers. “Look at this and tell me you can’t get it done.” Will took it slowly, wariness keeping his movements slow. Then he looked down, reading the legal document carefully. But no matter how many times he read it, the message was still the same. But just in case he didn’t understand, Lawton explained it. “I’ve carved off a piece of farmland for you, Will. It’s good land, and once the canal’s done, it’ll be worth a small fortune.” Will’s mouth went dry. He knew the farm, knew the dimensions as they were set there in black and white. It was a good, solid piece of land. “You’ll get it free and clear. It won’t go into Josephine’s dowry. It’ll be yours.” Lawton pushed to his feet just to emphasize his next words. “Yours, Will. Not your brother’s nor any other damn fool’s. You’ll have that land if you get the canal done by the fall Season.” “Why?” Will rasped. “Why would you offer me this?” Lawton smiled, the expression almost sly. “To give you incentive.” Then he shrugged. “And because you deserve it. A place of your own. Something that can’t be sold out from under you.” He grunted as he dropped back into his chair. “It’s a damn shame you weren’t born the Crowle heir. I doubt I’d be sitting here if you were. But that’s the way it is sometimes. Life doesn’t do what’s right.” “I get the land if the canal is finished by September,” Will repeated. Lawton nodded. “And no one can touch it. Not even Viscount Thrupp.” Will jerked, momentarily thrown. “Who is Viscount Thrupp?” “Oh. Didn’t I say?” Lawton leaned back with a self-satisfied smirk on his face. “Mr. Alastair Montgomery, the future Viscount Thrupp, is going to be my new son-in-law. He’s Josephine’s intended.”
