The Ozai, Ursa, & Ikem romance debacle…
I truly honestly hope that the Netflix adaptation doesn’t adapt The Search when it comes to Ozai and Ursa’s relationship. Which, thank Agni seems not to fully be the case. It seems that LA Ozai does care for Ursa and his family members, even Zuko. He show respect to Lu Ten and Iroh and even cried when burning Zuko. He even mentioned the “soft” mother Ursa when talking to Zuko and referenced her when saying “don’t talk to me about loss” Showing that he had feeling for her.
The Search is very poorly written and turn Ozai into a very piss-poor caricature of an evil abusive bad man for no good or compelling reason yet even fails to deliver on that interpretation of Ozai and Ursa’s complex and compelling relationship.
This song is basically the Urzai relationship in the ATLA comics!
youtube
If The Search wanted to turn Ozai into a compelling, vicious, dangerous, and cruel monstrous villain in Ursa’s and our own eyes. Then why didn’t Yang have Ozai kill Ikem when he THREATENED his father, Fire Lord’s Azulon life in defiance due to his love for Ursa? Yet, for some reason, he had Ozai spare Ikem’s life due to Ursa's “love” for Ozai which Ozai knows is a blatant lie and stupidly desperate!
The realistic and emotionally heart-wrenching scenario would be for Ozai to march towards Ikem, Ursa tries to stop Ozai, however Ozai scarred Ursa’s wrist by burning her via firebending and then backhanded her causing her lip to bleed. Then proceed to execute Ikem by immolation in front of Ursa’s very eyes. This very demented, sinister, vile, and cruel brutal punishment for DARING to raise his hand against Fire Lord Azulon, Fire Prince Ozai, and the Fire Sages wishes would had created a compelling narrative regarding Ursa having complete and justified loathing of her betroth Ozai.
It was extremely foolish, idiotic, unreasonable, and unrealistic to have a no-named peasant like Ikem, who is not a firebender, attack the royal carriage and guards no matter how brave and noble his affection and intentions were regarding the integrity of his childhood love. Fire Lord Azulon and Fire Prince Ozai probably should have immediately immolated Ikem and his familial relations due to his affront against the Fire Lord and his son. Trying to stand up against the authoritarian, oppressive, violent, and vicious absolute monarchical regime of Fire Lord Azulon and Fire Prince Ozai should have come with immense consequences just like the fire nation rebels in Episode 3: Omashu in NATLA.
Zuko mentions that Ozai and Ursa’s along with their family used to be happy, and we saw that in Zuko's flashbacks. Yang, just decided to make Ursa a victim because in his mind: URSA WOMAN, OZAI BAD MAN, SHE MUST BE HELD, HOSTAGE!!! While Ozai and Ursa arrange marriage does make sense and was confirmed by the creators. It doesn't mean that Ozai and Ursa relationship was ALWAYS BAD, or SHE WAS KIDNAPPED! Plus, the Urzai relationship is quite normal in the antiquity of Asian societies that the Fire Nation is based on aka Shogunates of Japan and Imperial Chinese Dynasties!!!
Personally, I am afraid that the ATLA comics are going to screw up the Fire Nation Royal Family Characterization and Dynamics along with making them one-dimensional especially Ozai and Azulon. They might legit have Azulon and Ozai be abusive and beat Ilah and Ursa. I'm so doomer blackpilled regarding ATLA comics considering the Serach. This is probably why the comic writers ignore making a comic Pre-Zuko Alone flashbacks.
Ozai's harshness and ruthless regarding Zuko has nothing to do with Ursa or Ikem forbidden love! Ozai wants Zuko and Azula to both prove themselves. Ozai doesn't favor Zuko or Azula. It is about which child will succeed Sozin, Azulon, and his legacy as future Fire Lord. In fact, Ozai doesn't want Zuko or Azula to think that they are the “favorite” child. He wants Azula and Zuko to improve through competition. Because of the “only the greatest of pressures can forge diamonds” & “steel sharpen steel” mentality. Ozai has the mentality of an imperialist warlord. Ozai isn't trying to be the world's most loving and caring father but rather continue and build upon a powerful and dominant legacy that his forefathers had created before him. He wants Zuko & Azula to be cold, ruthless, heartless, vicious, and brutal imperialistic warmongers like him (Ozai), his father (Azulon), and his grandfather (Sozin).

Kiyi is pretty adorable. However, I hate The Search and ATLA Comics to consider her and it canon. Hell, Kiyi is just a “good” sister replacement for Azula in the comics. Kiyi’s existence is a massive insult to Azula’s character and her as a sister. Kiyi is going to be the “perfect” sister for Zuko and daughter for Ursa that Azula never was. Kiyi as a character concept rubs me the wrong way. Just another Yang OOC fanfic character like her daddy Ikem. We all know that Yang and comics writers would never make Kiyi Ozai’s child and not Ikem. For me personally, the Zuko and Azula dynamic is perfect and Kiyi and any other children aren't needed or wanted with Fire Hazard Siblings! 💯😒

An argument that Kiyi is Ozai and and Ursa's child
Where did the power to melt metal come from? no other than Ozai and Ursa. After all, it is their blood line that creates such power, isn't it?
Look at Kiyi. At such a young age, she can melt a metal door. There is no way that power dame came out of nowhere, and she isn't a descendant of Roku and Sozin combined bloodlines like Azula and Zuko.
Theory:
Ursa, who probably has a history of not being able to tell she was with a child till a few months in, probably didn't know she was with a child when banished, as she is the kind of woman who gets a very small bump.
Do I have to acknowalge the Search ? I guess I do
Ursa got tricked into giving up her memories, so she obviously forgot Kiyi was Ozai's, but once they returned, she was like, Oh boy.
So i guess here my argument and theory ps Ozai knows about Kiyi.

broke: Zuko, Katara, and Aang as The Phantom, Christine, and Raoul in a Phantom of the Opera AU

Urzai and Urkem? Curious how you feel about Ursa as a character.
I was afraid someone would ask me this... Alright, here we go
Urzai
vomit / don’t ship / okay / cute / adorable / perfect / beyond flawless / hot damn / screaming and crying / i will ship them in hell
I get it. It's another toxic fave. People took Zuko's line about when his family was happy and ran with it. People saw that Ursa never seemed to be afraid of Ozai and ran with that. Ozai is more interesting (and realistic) if there was once something in him that was capable of loving and being loved. And I agree. I like the story potential of Urzai. I don't ship it, though. I would write it, but I don't ship it. I have made the connection between Ozai and Aang as fathers, and now I'm wondering how similar they were as husbands.
Urkem...
vomit / don’t ship / they infuriate me on a profound level/okay / cute / adorable / perfect / beyond flawless / hot damn / screaming and crying / i will ship them in hell
I hate this. I hate this more than I hate Urzai. I hate this so much I had to add a new level of dislike to the ranking system. I hate that of all the plotlines Bryke could have created, they had Ursa choose to forget the children she left with her abusive ex (who she knew was willing to outright murder one of them) and then start a happy new life and family with Ikem. I hate that they had Ikem encourage her to do it. Ikem didn't stand a chance with me once I found that out. It would have been better if Ursa had just been dead, frankly. This happens in real life, too.
I've been listening to a lot of Reddit stories on YouTube while I'm at work (I still get my work done. Don't tell my boss), and one of the most common stories I hear is from children of parents who got remarried and prioritized their family with their new spouses over their children from their failed relationships. That mess is depressing to hear sometimes. It's traumatizing for the children, no matter how old they are. I can't imagine how much worse it would be if those parents not only abandoned their kids, but then got plastic surgery and voluntarily had their memories of their children erased, like Jim Carey power washing Kate Winslet from his mind so they could go on and enjoy their new spouse and children without guilt. It would suck! The fact that Ursa did just that and there was no fallout from it is horrifying, and neither Zuko nor Azula (and her murderous behind) deserved that. I hate comic!Ursa, and I hope she accidentally swallows her own hemlock.
I take back my opinion or Urzai. They deserve each other.

She doesn't even look like Ursa anymore and has different memories, different voices, and different personalities. Ursa is basically "dead" until Mother of Faces!
No one talks about how awful Ikem really is for knowing that Zuko and Azula are Ursa’s children and turning them away to keep searching for someone they would never have found if not for the mother of faces. He wanted his own little happy ever after with his blissfully ignorant wife and his own child knowing full well that would mean two other children that were there before his would grow up without a mother.

I will forever be salty about comics!Ursa. You're really good at getting into the intense, nitty-gritty emotions of the characters, and I'd be interested in seeing your take on Zuko (and Azula) realistically responding to Ursa's whole mind wipe thing.
Comics!Ursa is TRASH!!!!! And so is Ikem! I've actually already touched on Zuko's reaction to Ursa's return here. His reaction would be...complicated.

No Fire Lord not even Pre-BSS seige Iroh would accept their children being kidnapped and raised by some random wannabe stepdad in a backwater village.
Ursa & Ikem: [Travel to the Royal Caldera Capital City and enter the Royal Palace]
Ursa: Hey Ozai! Can you let me have Zuko and even Azula your talented heiress with Avatar Roku's blood to become my ex-boyfriend turn new husband stepchildren? We going to move them to a backwater village of Hira'a even though you told me to forget about my ties to that place during our marriage?
Ozai: WOMAN WHAT PART OF BANISHED DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND!?!?! GUARDS PUT THESE TWO CLOWNS IN CHAINS!!!!!
[Ozai give speech to the masses with Ursa and Ikem in a cage]
Ozai: My former adulterous and murderous wife was foolish enough to come back to the capital even after I spared her life after finding out she murder my father, Fire Lord Azulon! NOW SHE COMES TO STEAL MY DAUGHTER AZULA ALONG WITH THE BASTARD SHE HAD WITH IKEM ALONG WITH PLOTING TO DESTROY THE ROYAL FAMILY!!!!
I EVEN HAVE HER TREASONOUS LETTER OF ZUKO'S ILLEGITIMATCY!!!
BUT I'M A MERCIFUL MAN, THE BASTARD ZUKO WILL BE SENT INTO EXILE WITH A NOBLE GOAL OF HUNTING THE AVATAR TO CLEANSE HIS IMPURE BASTARD SOUL!!!!
Zuko & Azula: [Stun and Shocked into Silence]
Azula: I definitely inherited my brains from my Daddy!
Zuko: [Wails and Cries over Ursa's imminent execution and Ozai not being his father along with his banishment]
“The Search, Part III”:
Noren: [Grasping her shoulders, looking into her eyes.] Maybe there’s another option! What if you bring your kids back to Hira'a? We could all live together, like a family! Ursa: You don’t know what Ozai is like. I wouldn’t just be endangering me and my children, I’d be endangering you. And probably the whole town.
Ursa, your children are heirs to the throne and royalty. Ozai could be the nicest guy and Firelord ever, and he wouldn’t let you kidnap them and let you tear them away from their stations, education, status, and training so that you could raise them as peasants in the middle of nowhere.
Moreover, you already endangered both of your children when you declared at least one of them(and even the one that Ozai never wanted to keep in the first place) to be a bastard. Not to mention that this declaration involved “admitting” that you and Ikem had literally committed treason, so you already endangered everyone involved for selfish reasons.

I read your Ursa/ Urkem opinions and man don't I feel that in my heart. That being said, considering: a) Jet/ Azula is they both get better. b) Jet/Azula if they don't get better
vomit / don’t ship / okay / cute / adorable / perfect / beyond flawless / hot damn / screaming and crying / i will ship them in hell
This ship would be short and explosive. I think literally. You have to understand that when I think of a 'redemption arc' for either of them, I'm not saying there would be a complete 180* turn on their ideas. Just maybe they'd be less homicidal. Azula would be open to reconciling with her brother, and maybe make some new friends. But I don't think she'd ever 100% be sorry about the war. And maybe Jet would come to regret trying to kill a bunch of defenseless people (I hesitate to say "innocent". They were still colonizers, after all), I don't see him coming around on the Fire Nation royal family, no matter how hard they try to make amends (and I don't think Azula would be that interested in making amends, to begin with). I think this would be a toxic mess of a relationship that would last all of a season before it imploded.

I did wish Kiyi, as a concept, had been different; she had her bratty, compulsive side. I wish they explored Kiyi's not liking her mother changing her face more too.
But I do agree that having Kiyi be the Azula prefect substitute is so annoying. It is more my mad theory as to where Kiyi power came from.
Cause two none-benders in Ursa (whose grandfather Roku was the avatar and whose zuko and azula power came from well half of it), and Ikem, a none-bender too, had such a powerful child.
However i admit no matter how hard i wish for things to be diffrent the comics did the thing didn't they urg.
