Why the nation fell for Gareth Southgate
With empathy, integrity and determination, the manager who missed a penalty at Euro 96 is giving England its chance of glory
Pick a moment. There have been so many from which to choose in this unexpectedly joyous World Cup. Harry Kane’s stoppage-time winner against Tunisia. Jordan Pickford’s penalty save against Colombia. Eric Dier’s winning shootout spot kick moments later. Harry Maguire’s towering header in the quarter-final. Kyle Walker and Jesse Lingard dancing like idiots in front of the fans.
But there is one that sticks out above all others. One so iconic it could be eclipsed only by Kane lifting the trophy in Moscow on Sunday. It came after England had just won its first ever penalty shootout in a World Cup. Having congratulated his own players, the England manager, Gareth Southgate, took the time to seek out Mateus Uribe, the Colombian player whose miss had set up the victory, and put an arm round him in consolation.

Even oscillating, Santos achieved good results in 2020; watch
ROBERTO VAZQUEZ / FUTURA PRESS / FUTURA PRESS / ESTADÃO CONTENTRaniel celebrates goal with Santos shirt
THE Saints, it is true, the year of 2020 did not start to excite its fans. Before the stoppage in football due to Covid-19 pandemic, Peixe was undergoing a reconstruction process under the command of Jesualdo Ferreira. Still, Peixe played some good games and achieved great results.
Proof of this is that Alvinegro praiano is very close to qualifying for the quarterfinals of the Paulista championship. Leading Group A with 15 points, Santos have five more than Oeste and Água Santa, second and third, respectively.
At Liberators cup, the Baixada team started the tournament with everything, guaranteeing six points and 100% success in the two initial rounds.
Altogether, Santos has 6 wins, 3 draws and 3 losses since the beginning of the year. Below, the Young Pan Online lists the best moments of the team Vila Belmiro in the season.
SANTOS 2 X 0 INTER DE LIMEIRA
Santos' first good performance, in fact, happened in the 3rd round of Paulistão. Receiving Inter de Limeira, trained by the idol Elano, Fish had no mercy and won 2-0, with two goals from striker Raniel.
In the match, Raniel, a striker hired from São Paulo, hit the post before scoring two beautiful goals. In the second half, Uribe had the chance to expand, but wasted face to face with the goalkeeper.
More than the result, Santos' presentation was convincing and it was important to remove the suspicion of the team that had played poorly in the tie with RB Bragantino and in the triumph over Guarani.
SANTOS 2 X 0 BOTAFOGO
Santos has recovered from defeat in the classic to Corinthians with a convincing victory over Botafogo-SP, in Vila Belmiro, in a duel valid for the fifth round of the State Championship. Carlos Sánchez and Eduardo Sasha did for the principals.
In Soteldo's first game in 2020, the Venezuelan made the opponent's defense hellish and created the best moves for Peixe. It was his assistance for Sasha to set the score 2-0.
DEFENSA Y JUSTICIA 1 X 2 SANTOS
In the debut of the Copa Libertadores, Santos faced an organized group, with offensive qualities and who liked to have the ball. Dominated in the initial stage, the Brazilian team ended up being punished by Defensa y Justicia in extra time, with a header from Rodríguez.
In the second half, the star of Jesualdo Ferreira shone, who bet on the entries of Kaio Jorge and Jobson, responsible for the epic turn in the rival territory.
SANTOS 3 X 1 MIRASSOL
Excited with the victory at Libertadores, Santos did not let the “shuttlecock fall” and scored another good performance in the next match. At home, the Santos team had an overwhelming first half and scored three times in less than 25 minutes.
Diego Pituca, Yuri Alberto and Eduardo Sasha made the crowd jump for joy in Vila Belmiro. In the second half, the team only managed the comfortable advantage.
SANTOS 1 X 0 DELFÍN
The last match on this list was far from thrilling Santos fans. For the second round of the Libertadores, the team received the modest Delfín, from Ecuador, and won with a header from Lucas Veríssimo.
Despite the sleepy match, Peixe won an important victory, remaining in the lead of the G key, with two points more than Libertad.

New Post has been published on http://ooduarere.com/news-from-nigeria/world-news/the-minister-of-defense-of-venezuela-rejects-trumps-blackmail-against-his-country/
The Minister of Defense of Venezuela rejects Trump’s blackmail against his country
For the Ooduarere.com – a translation collaboration between Deena Stryker and our own amarynth with Deena doing the first rough translation and amarynth doing the subsequent heavy lifting. While this is a quick translation in the interests of time, and not word for word, it represents fairly the content and the context of the Defense Minister’s rejection. This was an excellent speech and we did not do it full justice in translation, as it was felt that after Mr Trump’s speech, to get this out fairly accurately and quickly was more important than fine adjustments. To illustrate the flow, I have added headers to the different sections. These bolded headers are mine (amarynth), and not those of the Venezuelan Defense Minister.
Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez rejected President Donald Trump’s call to revolt against his president, Nicolás Maduro, the commander-in-chief of the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB). He stressed that this institution always acts in accordance with the law and with respect to Human Rights. He recalled that the US president intends and seeks to impose “their will in the world through force and domination”.
youtube
Comments on Trump’s Florida Venezuela Speech
We’ve been aware of all the threats against us, and have presented our military plans, within the limits of the law, always respecting the Venezuelan people, taking into account our constitution. Yesterday we observed and heard a speech by Trump in Florida. We are astonished by the arrogant, bullying tone of this speech, against our laws and institutions. which approved of terrorists in our country, specifically a personality who engaged in acts of visible terrorism, who commandeered a helicopter from the body of State Security and opened fire on kindergardens, (infantile installations) and robbed arms.
They (the US) see socialism as their main enemy and believe that the whole world thinks the same way, pretending that the world thinks in this unique way. There is no debate of ideas, there is no discussion, there is no dialectic, only their own single belief which they want to impose on the world through force, domination and coercion – on the world and the planet.
Here in Venezuela, we have a constitution (which you ignore), which states political pluralism, not elitism. It is the theory of participation of the diverse and various forces that make up political power and the constitution states the mechanisms to be used.
Furthermore Trump talks about supposed humanitarian assistance, but puts that aside to create a public opinion internationally against the people of Venezuela as well as that our armed forces will confront the people of Venezuela. This is a string of lies and manipulations which are a psychological propaganda campaign against Venezuela to gain political power. The most serious issue that we have seen is that Trump gives himself the possibility of commanding the Venezuelan armed forces and institutions, giving them orders. This is insolent. His advisors need to educate him or give him a roadmap. One has to be of Venezuelan birth before you can give orders to Venezuelan military forces. You have to born on this land. You have to be of our blood and born a national and then make your career in politics in Venezuela. You of course have to be elected and get a majority of votes. After you gain the majority of votes, the people will have freely expressed their voluntary willingness. Indirect elections occur in the United States. In Venezuela, we have direct elections according to the procedures of National Electoral Council.
Mr Trump, to boast of giving orders to the National Bolivarian armed force, you have to follow this roadmap and it is preferable to tell the world that the campaign against Venezuela is not the string of manipulations and psychological campaign that you undertook but all the effort is to obtain the political power in Venezuela. That is the reality.
About Venezuela
We had elections. We elected President Maduro. After making him president with the strength of the popular vote, the military of Venezuela recognises President Maduro as the Commander in Chief.
This recognition is derived from the people and is the will of the Venezuelan people. We have a President and Commander in Chief, in the person of Nicholás Maduro. By the same token we say to those who claim to be Presidents here in Venezuela, that this is how you do it and any other way will not be able to penetrate the patriotic spirit of the men and women of the armed forces.
The country is calm, the government is working, civil, civilian, and Bolivariano. The people are working, forging their own happiness. There is a government that is fulfilling its constitutional functions, there is national armed forces today more than ever conscious of their military duties to the citizens. There is a civil consciousness in the armed forces, profoundly democratic and deeply Bolivarian. It is important to let our country know that the world knows what the role of our armed forces is. The armed forces are in the center of the debate and in the center of the seriousness. Trump’s intention is to break this unity of the armed forces and to offend the armed forces because when a president of another country comes to pretend to give orders to the armed forces, they are underestimating and disrespecting the consequences. It is extreme disrespect to ask our armed forces to put themselves outside of the law of our constitution and institutions. This would be totally aberrant behavior.
About Colombia – a subtle reminder that there is a joint responsibility for peace in the region
For example, for the Colombian president to call on our armed forces, shows his ignorance of our history. To call on the Colombian army would be a lack of respect toward them, they have to do their job of preserving peace in Columbia. Listen to the President of Colombia. He makes a call to our armed forces as a Minster of popular power for the defense of the people, and gives order to the Colombian armed forces, who do not know who their commander in chief is and who obey the paramilitary groups of Álvaro Uribe or align themselves with guerrilla groups of an organization with a different political policy.
We will not get involved in this. We are respectful of the internal issues of states. Each state has their government and corresponding legal mechanisms with the responsibility to carry out the corresponding processes as defined by the legal mechanisms in their mandate. For example if I had to call on our brothers in the Colombian armed forces, it would be a lack of respect for the military forces of the Republic of Colombia. It would be an underestimation of our compañeros in the Colombian military who are called to play the role of preserving peace in the region, a responsibility which we both have, towards the Latin Americans and the Caribeños.
Maintaining peace is our responsibility. But if we have to, we can reverse that against any nation or government that in this moment seeks to attack us with their false diplomacy and their actions outside international law against our people and our homeland. We in the armed forces have a resilient character, a strong patriotism, we are Bolivarian and have always been anti-imperialist, since we were born. This is not momentary, it is historical. It is inherent since the creation of the armed forces as a liberating army in our country.
Back to the issue and the role of the Venezuelan Defense Forces
They will not be able to use their pretenses, with their methods of coercion, blackmail, manipulation of sanctions and offers of amnesty to our leaders. If there is one thing that characterizes us, and this is known by the world, it is dignity. We fly the flag with national dignity. They will not be able to win with tricks on our dignity. They can sanction us but will not succeed. We will hear them, but we remain with our country. This is a political, even personal attack on Venezuela. If there is no respect for the nation, its laws and authorities, it is a jungle.
The attempt of coup is increasing and has placed the armed forces in the center of the debate. We observe in yesterday’s speech an act of extreme arrogance and terrible folly on the part of the President of the United States. Donald Trump referred to our country in a tone and in the content of his declarations we see a very dangerous attitude of one who wants to direct the actions of a military power that with their limitless imperial desire is orchestrating an interventionist plan against our nation. It is imperative to reiterate to the world that we are in the presence of an escalation of a hybrid war to suffocate our economy with economic and financial sanctions to generate chaos and anarchy. Know well that their true purpose is none other than to appropriate the wealth of the nation. It is unusual to flagrantly violate the norms of international law by imparting orders to the Venezuelan military, promoting and encouraging confrontation with our compañeros and co-nationales under the pretext of humanitarian help. Any attempt to change government must follow our rules and must happen according to our roadmap. We will defend our nation, and I am certain will win.
Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez

Southgate, and England, reap reward for faith in Pickford
SAMARA, Russia (Reuters) – Despite England generally dominating their World Cup quarter-final against Sweden it was goalkeeper Jordan Pickford who was man of the match in the 2-0 victory as coach Gareth Southgate’s faith in the 24-year-old was amply rewarded.
Soccer Football – World Cup – Quarter Final – Sweden vs England – Samara Arena, Samara, Russia – July 7, 2018 England’s Jordan Pickford makes a save REUTERS/David Gray
England were leading through a Harry Maguire header with Sweden barely mounting an attack when Pickford showed great reactions to push away a Marcus Berg header.
Dele Alli put England 2-0 up but Pickford also made another excellent save from Viktor Claesson, then tipped a Berg shot over the bar to ensure there was no nervous finale.
In the second round he made an astonishing save in stoppage time to push clear a 35-metre pile-driver by Colombia’s Mateus Uribe that was heading for the top corner. That was somewhat overshadowed by Colombia equalizing from the resulting corner but Pickford got his moment in the limelight with a shootout save as England triumphed on penalties.
Soccer Football – World Cup – Quarter Final – Sweden vs England – Samara Arena, Samara, Russia – July 7, 2018 England’s Jordan Pickford celebrates after Harry Maguire scored their first goal REUTERS/Lee Smith
“After I made that first save from Marcus Berg with the header that was me set for the rest of the game,” Pickford said on Saturday.
“I wasn’t born the last time England reached a World Cup semi-final (in 1990). We have always said we would take one game at a time and we can go on and create our own history.”
Everton’s Pickford made his England debut seven months ago and had only three caps before the World Cup but Southgate let him know he would be his first-choice.
He also backed him up with two more inexperienced keepers in the shape of Jack Butland (eight caps) and Nick Pope (one), leaving behind long-term regular Joe Hart.
Like much that Southgate has done since taking over as England manager, it has proved a refreshing and hugely effective approach.
Slideshow (2 Images)
England have a long tradition of excellent goalkeepers but also a tradition of playing them beyond their sell-by-date, with fatal consequences.
Peter Shilton was almost 41 in the 1990 World Cup and did not look as if he would save a German penalty in the shootout defeat if they had been taking them until midnight.
Twelve years later the near-39-old David Seaman stood motionless as Ronaldinho’s speculative long-range shot floated over him almost in slow motion as Brazil knocked England out in the quarter-finals.
Southgate could have played it safe and kept faith with the experienced Hart, despite his struggles this season, but went with form, and youth, and has been amply vindicated.
“I had a good season and this is what it is all about,” Pickford said.
“I don’t put myself under pressure and play in the moment, nothing fazes me. The pitch is always the same. The lines and goal height are the same.
“I just work hard every day. I kept a clean sheet because all the work I do in training is to showcase on match day. I am capable of making these saves and it showed in the performance.”

England knocks out Colombia on penalties to reach the World Cup quarterfinals
Watch Video
No country had lost more penalty shootouts at a World Cup, but even though history was against them England’s inexperienced team held its nerve to see off Colombia in a tense finale and progressed to the quarterfinals.
England were within minutes of reaching the last eight in normal time thanks to a Harry Kane penalty until it conceded an injury-time goal — Yerry Mina powered in a header in the 93rd minute — which allowed the South Americans to live on to extra-time and, ultimately, penalties.
A miss from Mateus Uribe and a one-handed Jordan Pickford save from Carlos Bacca in the shootout proved to be Colombia’s downfall and ensured England, having failed on three previous occasions, won a penalty shootout at a World Cup for the first time in its history.

Practice makes perfect
Previously England had lost six of its seven penalty shootouts at major tournaments, the only win coming against Spain in the European Championships in 1996.
But coach Gareth Southgate — a man who famously missed from the spot in the Euro 1996 semifinal against Germany — had made sure his players took spot-kicks in training and, on this occasion at least, practice made perfect.
“We talked long and hard about owning the process,” Southgate told ITV when asked about the squad’s approach to penalty shootouts.
“Great credit to all the staff and our players who have taken everything on board.
“We looked at individual technique, looked at how we needed to be as a team, and the goalkeeper has been important in that.”
It was left to Eric Dier to convert the winning spot-kick and send fans into fever pitch, changing hope to expectation with Sweden the next opponent on July 7.

Is football ‘coming home?’
Little was expected of this young England team when it left for Russia. There were others with more experience, better teams packed with superstars and pedigree.
But with this being the World Cup which has had little respect for reputation, sending Spain, Germany, Argentina and Portugal tumbling, English hopes have increased with every heavyweight exit.
READ: The World Cup’s most stylish football kits
Social media had been awash, perhaps initially with tongue firmly in cheek, with England fans claiming football was “coming home,” the chorus of the country’s favorite football song “Three Lions,” written when England hosted the European Championships in 1996 and reached the semifinals.
The English are now the only previous winners in their half of the draw and though they have some way to go before replicating the feats of 1966, the only time the country has won football’s biggest prize, even the gloomiest of fan will now perhaps be captivated.
Sweden — eight places below the English in FIFA’s world rankings — will be a dangerous opponent, but it is a tie England will be expected to successfully negotiate.
The tenacious Swedes — who reached their first World Cup quarterfinal in 24 years thanks to a 1-0 win over Switzerland — will not be obliging opponents.
Sweden, after all, topped a group which featured Germany and, though it is a team without superstars, its unity and discipline has already seen off South Korea, Mexico and the Swiss.
Southgate himself tempered expectations.
“This is special but I want us to go on now,” the Englishman added on ITV.
“Sweden, it’s another team we have a poor record against. We’ve underestimated them for years. They’re brilliant at what they do. It’s going to be a real tough test.”

From injury-time heartbreak to penalty joy for England
England controlled the beat of a high-tempo opening, pressing with urgency and keeping the opposition largely in its own half.
Without the injured James Rodriquez, captain Radamel Falcao was an isolated figure in Colombia’s attack and, starved of possession and opportunity, the former Manchester United and Chelsea striker posed little threat.
But for all its dominance in the middle of the park there were few chances for England in the first half, the best falling to Kane in the 15th minute from a Kieran Trippier cross. But, from an acute angle, the striker headed over the crossbar.
The major talking point of the half came off the ball just before the break when replays showed Wilmar Barrios pushing his head first against Jordan Henderson’s chest and then his chin.
The England midfielder, who was the only English player to miss a penalty in the shootout, fell to the ground, but the offense was deemed worthy of a yellow card only.
With comfortable victories over the lower-ranked Tunisia and Panama in the group stages, followed by defeat to an understrength Belgium after having already qualified, this was supposed to be the biggest test of the tournament for England but, in truth, for the majority of the match Colombia only tested the English temperament.
Within minutes after the break, the Colombians were punished for their ill-discipline — the referee caught Carlos Sanchez rugby tackling Kane to the ground at a corner and had no hesitation in awarding the spot-kick.
Some Colombians argued with the referee while others scuffed the penalty spot with their studs, but it made little difference to Kane who calmly scored his sixth goal of this tournament, putting him in prime position for the Golden Boot award.
As Colombia searched for an equalizer, England threatened on the counter-attack, though Colombia did have an opportunity in the 80th minute.
Kyle Walker lost the ball in Colombia’s half, the South Americans rapidly attacked but Juan Cuadrado shot into the stands when he should have at least tested Pickford.
Visit CNN.com/sport for more news and features
Pickford, going into this match questions over whether he was worthy of a starting spot, produced a sensational save to deny Uribe from distance in injury time but, deep in injury time, the England goalkeeper could do little to prevent the equalizer.
From a corner, Mina headed beyond the diving Pickford and Trippier, who was standing on the line, to set up a grandstand finish.
In the first-half of injury time England faced wave after wave of yellow-shirted attacks — Falaco and Mina tested with headers — but England held firm and regained its composure in the final 15 minutes before the match concluded with a dramatic climax.

Colombian fans take heart-breaking loss to England in their stride
The Andean nation's capital, Bogota, came to a standstill as people tuned in to watch the 'Cafeteros', with electrifying roars and loud gasps surging throughout the city each time either team came close to scoring. Giant screens showed the match in many cities around the nation of nearly 50 million people and in downtown Bogota, where suited lawyers, policemen and street vendors cheered and then commiserated in front of a screen set amid the gray concrete streets, as office workers watched from the windows above. A Colombian fan shows his disappointment. Photo: AP "It was a good game - sad that we couldn't get through, but I'm proud of the team's effort," said 47-year-old shoe shiner Mauricio Sanchez, who spent much of the game standing atop his box of supplies, the better to see the screen. Colombia's stand-out player from the tournament will be Mina, whose headers earned him the nickname "Mina de Oro" or gold mine, after they carried Colombia to victories against Senegal and Poland in the group stage. Mina's performance earned accolades from spectators despite the team's loss, while midfielder Mateus Uribe, who fluffed the first of Colombia's two missed penalties, earned sympathy. "The best player was Mina," said lawyer Adriana Palma, 33. "I'm really sad for Uribe." At a screening in an English-themed bar in northern Bogota, British expatriates and tourists celebrated England's victory. "It was a good match, but (I'm) always disappointed when the game goes to penalties - it doesn't show the true potential of the team," said Emma Kinsey, 32, a yoga instructor from Lincoln who lives in Bogota. Last week's game against Senegal saw Colombia's key forward James Rodriguez forced off due to a swelling in his right calf. He had to miss Tuesday's match, watching from the sidelines. Colombia have lost to England at the World Cup before. At France '98 the teams met in a group match and England won 2-0, thanks to goals by Darren Anderton and David Beckham, to advance to the last 16 where they lost to Argentina - on penalties. Eric Dier scored the decisive spot-kick as England won a World Cup penalty shoot-out for the first time, edging past Colombia 4-3 to set up a quarter-final against Sweden. Harry Kane's sixth goal of the World Cup appeared enough to secure England's first knockout win at a major tournament in 12 years, the Three Lions captain scoring from the spot after he was fouled by Carlos Sanchez. But Colombia took the last-16 tie into extra-time with a dramatic equaliser in the 93rd minute in Moscow on Tuesday, Yerry Mina climbing highest in the box to score a head in Juan Cuadrado's corner. In the shoot-out, David Ospina plunged to his left to keep out Jordan Henderson's poor penalty and give Colombia the advantage, but Mateus Uribe struck the crossbar and Jordan Pickford denied Carlos Bacca brilliantly to give Dier the chance to win it for the Three Lions. And the substitute kept his nerve, Dier drilling home his spot-kick even though Ospina dived the right way, with England now set to take on Sweden on Saturday in Samara. The South Americans were without James Rodriguez due to injury and could have had Wilmar Barrios sent off in the first half when he appeared to aim a headbutt into Henderson's chest and chin. More likely that a half fit Rodrigez will be made available from the bench, should Colombia need a moment of inspiration. Juan Quintero is likely to benefit from the absence of Rodriguez and will be set for a role as the playmaker of the side. The Porto star, who has been on loan at River Plate for the second half of the season played a delightful ball to Falcao for his side second goal against Poland, and will be charged with doing the same against England. In reality, England have a poor record in knockout football at the World Cup. However, this young side has nothing to fear and will be looking to relay the ghosts of England teams past. Even more encouraging for the side will be the prospect of a quater-final against Sweden or Switzerland, although Southgate will be stressing to focus on the task at hand. Jessie Lingard has impressed in his midfield role, and his stunning strike against Panama highlighted his class. Colombia may elect to sit back in the opening exchanges, and the pace and ability of the Man United player will be needed if the Three Lions are to break the deadlock early. World Cup 2018: England End Penalty Jinx To Edge Colombia In Shootout
England edged Colombia 4-3 on penalties to halt a run of five successive shootout defeats at major tournaments and book a quarter-final clash against Sweden at the World Cup. Harry Kane fired England ahead with his tournament-leading sixth goal just before the hour in Moscow, converting a penalty after he was hauled down by Carlos Sanchez at a corner. Gareth Southgate’s team looked to be heading into the last eight in regulation time until Yerry Mina equalised with a 93rd-minute header as the giant Colombian defender scored for the third game in a row. Neither team could find an advantage in extra-time and so a bad-tempered match went to a nail-biting penalty shootout.
David Ospina dived superbly to his left to repel Jordan Henderson’s third penalty for England, but Manuel Uribe hit the crossbar before Jordan Pickford saved from Carlos Bacca.
Eric Dier drilled home the decisive spot-kick as England won for just the second time in eight penalty shootouts and reached the quarter-finals for the first time since 2006.
– James Rodriguez blow –
Colombia were dealt a huge blow before kick-off as James Rodriguez failed to shake off a calf injury, the Bayern Munich midfielder not even fit enough for a place on the bench.
The 26-year-old was the Golden Boot winner with six goals in Brazil four years ago, when Colombia reached the quarter-finals for the first time.
Kane, Raheem Sterling and Dele Alli were among nine players recalled for England after Gareth Southgate rested the majority of his first-choice side for their final group game against Belgium.
Kane scored a combined five goals in the wins over Tunisia and Panama, and the Tottenham striker went close when his looping header back across goal landed on the roof of the net.
Sterling then did well to spin past the imposing Davinson Sanchez although his left-footed strike was charged down, while Kieran Trippier curled wide from a free-kick.
Wilmar Barrios was booked for leaning his head into the chest of Jordan Henderson as the game grew into an increasingly fiesty affair.
Pickford made his first save from a fizzing long-range effort from Juan Fernado Quintero, while Jesse Lingard sliced over after Colombia half-cleared a cross.
A member of the Colombia coaching staff appeared to deliberately barge Sterling as the Manchester City player headed towards the half-time at the interval, escaping with just a telling-off.
Kane made the breakthrough on 57 minutes after he was wrestled to the ground at a corner by Carlos Sanchez, the same player who was shown the first red card of the tournament in a 2-1 loss to Japan.
The England captain faced a lengthy wait as several Colombia players protested to the referee but he kept his nerve to beat north London rival Ospina, lifting his penalty just over the Arsenal goalkeeper’s outstretched leg.
Alli nearly added a second when his diving header at the far post flashed over the bar, with Lingard appealing for another spot-kick after he was caught by Davinson Sanchez.
Juan Cuadrado blazed over with 10 minutes to play, and it appeared Colombia’s hopes were up when Pickford made a terrific save to turn behind Manuel Uribe’s spectacular long-range strike.
But Mina rose powerfully to meet the resulting corner, with Trippier only able to help the ball in via the underside of the crossbar in the third minute of added-on time.
Substitute Danny Rose almost struck an extra-time winner when his angled shot whistled beyond the far post, and Eric Dier headed over unmarked at a corner before England’s luck deserted them again in all too familiar fashion.
Then, unlike so many times before, luck finally smiled on them in the shootout.

England ends penalty curse to reach last eight
MOSCOW (Reuters) – England finally overcame nearly 30 years of penalty pain when they beat Colombia 4-3 in a shootout on Tuesday after drawing their World Cup last-16 clash 1-1 following extra time after the South Americans had equalized in the 93rd minute.
Soccer Football – World Cup – Round of 16 – Colombia vs England – Spartak Stadium, Moscow, Russia – July 3, 2018 England players celebrate during the penalty shootout REUTERS/Carl Recine
Beginning with their 1990 semi-final heartache against West Germany, England had previously lost all three World Cup shootouts and three out of four in the European Championship and they looked on course for another nightmare when midfielder Jordan Henderson saw his spot-kick saved by David Ospina.
But Colombia’s Mateus Uribe hit the bar and England’s Jordan Pickford saved from Carlos Bacca, leaving Eric Dier to score the decisive penalty and earn a quarter-final against Sweden, while denying the Colombians a second straight run to the last eight.
England’s first knockout victory since 2006 was particularly sweet for coach Gareth Southgate, whose shootout miss decided the Euro ‘96 semi-final, and vindicated – just – his decision to field a second-string side in the final group game defeat by Belgium to secure an easier route toward the final.
He should also be given credit for insisting his players practice penalties, even bringing in a psychologist to help them, after a succession of his predecessors wrote the whole process off as a lottery beyond their control.
“We have fantastic supporters who have had to stand with us through decades of disappointment and this was a really special moment for our country,” Southgate said.
“Today will give belief for generations to follow and not be hindered by history or expectations.
“The players have really executed everything (in the shootout) that we’ve talked about exceptionally well and we showed incredible resilience to come back from huge disappointment at the final whistle and keep our calm.”
If England get past Sweden they face a potential semi-final against hosts Russia or Croatia for their first appearance in a final since winning the World Cup for the only time in 1966.

England had looked set to be going through with few dramas when tournament leading scorer Harry Kane smashed in a 57th-minute penalty, his sixth goal at the finals, only for Yerry Mina to head an equalizer in the third minute of stoppage time.
“We were so unlucky not to go through in 90 minutes,” said Kane, who also converted his shootout kick along with Marcus Rashford and Kieran Tripper. “No one laid on the floor and we stood there when it counted.”
KANE PENALTY
There had been precious little drama – though much petulance – throughout most of normal time as a Colombia side shorn of injured playmaker James Rodriguez set out to defend.
England were the better side without looking too dangerous but were then gifted the lead when Carlos Sanchez hauled down England’s captain and talisman Kane once too often.

After four minutes of mayhem as Colombia protested, Kane kept his cool and smashed in his third spot kick of Russia 2018.
When Juan Cuadrado blazed horribly over the bar with 10 minutes left from Colombia’s first chance it looked all over for them but there was a fiery sting in the tail of normal time.
Pickford made a superb save to touch wide what could have been the goal of the tournament from Uribe but from the following corner – Colombia’s first of the match – giant defender Mina rose highest to head in the equalizer.
England substitute Dier missed the best chance of the extra period when he headed over but he made up for it in emphatic style before being mobbed by his relieved team mates.
“It was a nervous one. I’ve never really been in a situation like that before but felt I had to score after missing the header at the end so I’m just thankful I scored,” he said.
Despite his team collecting six yellow cards to England’s two, coach Jose Pekerman felt Colombia had been on the wrong side of American referee Mark Geiger’s decisions.
“A player fakes a foul, they are trying to get the referee to book another player,” he said. “There is a lot of confusion with this type of play.
“It was very difficult to get into the match. There was a lot of rhythm and speed but as soon as the ball was in the box my players were not cool and composed.”
