This is for fan fic reasons of course. I really like the idea of my WoL referring to Urianger by the last syllable of his name, but my American ass will read "Ger" as "Grr". So...

Since you are one of Urianger's biggest fans, I thought you might know: Is anyone in his birth/childhood family ever mentioned?

I ask because a friend and I realized we couldn't remember anything about his family at all, and we know a little about every other major Scion's birth family (even Papalymo, though *that* one is really obscure.) But for Urianger, we only get his childhood friend and her family.

I wondered if we'd missed something in a side quest or something. Thanks!

Lord this turned into an essay... more after the break. TL;DR: The game does not give us any non-Moenbryda or non-Louisoix related people related to Urianger. They don't even confirm that he hung out with the other Scions during their years at the Studium. This leads us to believe that he was a ward of Louisoix of some sort, but there hasn't been any confirmation to that either (that I'm aware of).

There's not a whole lot about Urianger's past in game, honestly. A lot of characterization comes from Binding Coils quests (concern for Alisaie/the start of keeping secrets), Warring Triad (I can sense your bullshit, Unakalihai/wry sense of humor with Y'shtola), 3.4 (Alisaie telling us that she and Urianger were close/Urianger asking for Louisoix's guidance during the WoD fight), and small bits of StB (giving Alisaie her crystal rapier/coming out of the Lochs to help kick Fordola's ass). He gets a LOT of development in Shadowbringers, but nothing about his younger years. And you could put everything we learn about Urianger in Endwalker into two columns: how he is moving on with his life trying to stay true to his heart and how Moenbryda influenced him and continues to influence him.

There is not a lot about this man's youth! Everything in Urianger's past as far as the game gives us is that he spent his childhood with Moenbryda and was Louisoix's pupil. He doesn't have a Tales from series entry yet (big shame) and his entry in Encyclopedia Eorzea is about how he's a disciple of Louisoix and his amber carbuncle. There is a bit of 1.0 lore that Louisoix tells you that Urianger read too many prophecies as a kid and he hyperfixated himself a unique speech pattern. 

We don't even really know if he was friends with Thancred growing up! They're clearly at the very least best friends in adulthood but other than having an overlap in the years they attended the Studium there's not any straight confirmation they hung out.

What fanon I've managed to pick up is that he was adopted by Louisoix in a similar fashion that Louisoix adopted Thancred. I had an IRL friend straight up tell me that was the case but I can't think of or find a source for that. He had to be close to the Leveilleurs as a teen to young adult at least so he could become Alisaie's friend but he could still technically have living parents and be close to his mentor's family. He has his own last name, after all. Though, with it being Augurelt (an augur being a type of soothsayer) you could maybe argue it was something he chose himself. The game has yet to tell us.

hc + 🤕 for a pain-themed headcanon for Rowan

Rowan tries to hide her pain, physical and emotional. Her healer in her adventuring party, A'quexta, is shrewd about that sort of thing and heals her mostly with AoE spells so Rowan doesn't feel like she's being fussed over.

Urianger, a known fusser, has eventually learned the very subtle tells that Rowan has. Mostly she becomes more withdrawn and silent. Which a lot of people will miss because they don't know the baseline quietness Rowan has. He often has to play the "It would make me feel better if you'd let me" card on her. It works well.

What's a comedy plot you'd like to write?

I think writing some sort of babysitting plot would be funny. Maybe the Leveilleur twins would offer to watch the Argentas-Arugelt twins and hijinks would ensue.

"Oh, I got engaged, too!" Rowan smiled.

"Really, you couldn't have let me have this one thing on you?" Ellant shook his head.

"Well, I think she's pretty happy her son is alive. And that he's married too! She'll have a hard time choosing a favorite son-in-law."

"What's the fellow's name, then?" Esais asked, taking Ellant's hand.

"Urianger Arugelt," she said as plainly as she could.

Esias' brow furrowed in concentration but Ellant started to seethe and hiss.

"Uri - Urianger. The prophet. The self-same prophet that predicted the calamity. This is your fiance? Did you really need to upstage me that much?"

"It's not like I sought him out because he was famous! I almost completely botched my first conversation with him!" Rowan started to laugh at the memory.

"Oh, then you must have used the entirety of your feminine whiles to convince him to court you," Ellant said.

Rowan stuck out her tongue to her brother and started to tell the story of her journeys with the Scions.

It took all of Ellant's restraint to not rush to the boat as it pulled up to the dock. His family was being reunited in a physical sense. Well, most of it. But Papa was with them in spirit. He always would be. He squeezed Esais' hand, ready to show new to old and old to new.

Rowan was bouncing, same as she would've when Papa would come home from a long trip. Apparently her fiance - the godsdamned prophet - had been on a on-again-off-again sort of world tour with a friend as she took her own adventures. It seemed that absence only made her heart grow fonder.

Then Ellant saw her. Mama seemed a little wan as she was helped off the boat by an elegant sort of fellow in a scarf and abundance of jewelry. But her eyes lit up as she saw Ellant.

"My boy..." she said as Ellant swept her up into a hug.

He was only aware of his mother in the moment. It was her! Mama, here, in the flesh! She smelled the same as she always had, the kind of powdery floral scent of her favorite perfume.

"You've gotten so strong, El!" Mama laughed. "I remember when you first had your growth spurt and still had some troubles picking me up."

Esais might have muttered something, but Ellant couldn't make it out as he tried to gather every detail of his mother's face again. She looked the same as when he left her before Charteneau. He wanted her to look exactly the same, but it looked as though time had taken its toll on her with spidery crows feet at her eyes. 

"You've let your hair grow long..." Mama ran her fingers through some of his hair. "And you got that tattoo you always wanted!"

Ellant nodded, holding her hands to his face. She was here, she was real! Now he had more than scant memories, unlocked from conversations with his sister.

The full force of the fact started to wane in power, and he was beginning to become aware of the others around him. Esais close by, and Rowan with the bejeweled man. So this must be him...

"So who's gonna start the introductions?" Esais asked.

"Well, Esias, this is my mother, Alfinne Argentas." Ellant took his hand. "Mama, this is my husband, Esais Arumas. He took me in when I washed up on the shore after Charteneau."

"Tis a pleasure to meet you, Esais. Thank you for saving my boy," Mama said.

"The pleasure is all mine, Mistress Argentas. I don't think I could have found a more capable or loving partner than your son." Esais took Mama's hand and gave a reverent kiss.

"Oh, darling, there's no need to be formal. If 'Mama' is too much, just call me Alfinne," she said, turning to Rowan. "I already have one overly formal son-in-law."

Rowan snorted and the bejeweled man beside her looked away sheepishly.

"I suppose I'm next to add introductions... Ellant, Esais, this is Urianger Arugelt, my fiance. Urianger, this is my brother Ellant, and my brother-in-law, Esias."

Urianger bowed. "Tis a welcome sight to see my beloved's family whole and hale."

Ellant could feel the smile creep up on his face as Urianger spoke. "I called it. You did like his voice."

Rowan stuck out her tongue. "You did too!"

"Aye, but I'm not marrying him, am I?"

Aymeric hadn't had much chance to speak with Urianger during his tenure in the Eorzean Alliance, and even less time after he had returned from the First. Interestingly, it seemed that he had picked up astrology while on that Shard, despite the everlasting light blocking out the night sky. Aymeric only knew a little of Ishgardian astrology, and even less of the Sharlyan variety, but it had been his country that supplied Urianger with his new astrolabe.

"I must thank thee again for Ishgard's generosity," the Archon said, giving a deep bow. "The pattern is nigh identical to the one I carried on the First."

"According to the craftsman working on the piece, twas exceedingly simple to follow the plans Tataru had given them," Aymeric said. 

"Still, considering Ishgard's past views on the art, it must have been no small task to convince thy country's craftsman to relinquish such a fine tool to an outsider." 

"That, I will concede was a trial. But one overcome with the help of you and yours, I must admit." Aymeric turned to see Rowan chatting with General Aldynn and Lyse Hext.

She seemed more... relaxed? Whole? Aymeric could see that aught had changed in her mannerisms, but he couldn't tell quite what it was. Rowan had turned towards him, but Aymeric could tell she was looking past him by the way she was angled. She gave a soft, sweet smile - one that he had only seen a handful of times - to the man behind him. When he turned back to Urianger, he saw the man was still wearing his.

Ah.

"Master Arugelt, may I ask you a favor?" Aymeric asked.

"Of course," Urianger said. "What wouldst thou ask of me?"

Aymeric turned his head back to Rowan, recalling why she wouldn't court him. "Pray never get into politics."
