Heavy on the slight change of meaning amd tone regarding the term Valinyian, it usually a means of expressing scorn for Fenn and how he saw Tobias as the embodiment of the suffering he was subject to throughout the war due to the powers within Vaylin itself, Tobias represented all that he and his country supposedly lost, as time goes on Fenn seems to be letting go of this way of feeling as he learns that Tobias is more than a caricature in which he can splurge and vomit out all his woes and suffering to and as a result demean (because why not?)
Tobias is turning out to be way more than Fenn had initially believed and this may also help Fenn realise that the birthing of a person really does not dictate who they are as a person, also Fenn has a friend now, which is suprising seeing the shambles that is his countenance mainly towards Tobias (initially)
The shift in tone regarding the term "Vaylinian" not only indicates how fond Fenn is growing of Tobias, but his shift in attitudes as well, he is growing against the box the Sonan government had been trying to shove him into, he's slowly working towards realising that, no, not all Vaylinians are inherently evil and that the war isn't a result of the sole tyranny of one side.
what are your thoughts on the newest episode of faroff?
Well it was obviously really good just from an enjoyment perspective but if you want me to go further than that I thought it was a fantastic example of how the character development throughout the series thus far (most significantly the "Hesitation" + "Guest" mini arcs) is beginning to change how Fenn and Tobias (Fenn specifically, I have a lot to say about Tobias because I think there's a lot about him that people miss but it isn't in response to your question and should probably be saved for a future Faroff Friday post when I get back to doing that-- I set up an app today to limit my use of distracting apps so I can actually focus on writing for once, so we'll see if that helps me get back into routine) act around each other or even just think in general. In particular Fenn being able to like, play argue with Tobias without taking it to heart or making it a 'thing' stuck out to me, he's obviously getting more comfortable with him.
Also, this didn't start with this episode but I've also taken note of the shifting meaning of Fenn using the title "Vaylinian" to refer to Tobias. It used to have a very straightforward meaning, it was a sign of distrust and a reminder that they're enemies. But now it seems to have taken on a softer meaning. I'd probably equate it more with calling someone by their entire name now, firm but not necessarily aggressive. I thought it was interesting.
I do have some other points but they aren't as clearly true as the others and for the sake of saving time and text I won't bring them up lmao
Also think Tobias is finally starting to catch onto the fact that Fenn likes him back, for someone who's actually pretty good at reading people he can be remarkably dense
Apologies for the block of text

Definitely agree with everything said here. Honestly still wrapping my head around the idea of Fenn and Tobias being friends because while they don't seem like enemies anymore, they also don't exactly seem like friends, although the newer episodes are surely starting to change that. My best friend and I usually refer to them as 'partners', like partners in an agreement. I thought it worked on account of the truce. Absolutely looking forward to them being closer though.
Even if I don't exactly see them as friends just yet, the two of them having a friend like relationship with someone their own age does seem extremely beneficial to me considering that as far as we know they're not close with that many people. Fenn grew up on a farm so likely isolated from people (grew up on a farm myself and it was isolated, and there was much more land to work with back in 1918) and his parents are dead and it's been implied that he had a falling out with his uncle so he probably doesn't have that many connections outside of (maybe) having some friends in the military. Tobias' family was abusive and neglectful and I personally think he would've had to sneak out and/or hide to do anything he personally wanted to do that did not have to do with being 'helpful' as a tool for his family which very much could have included friendships. So even if they weren't enemies, I think it could be helpful to them, even if just in terms of mental health.
Double on Fenn starting to realise that things aren't as black and white as he thought. I actually wanted to bring up the signs of him starting to think more about Tobias in terms of an individual/as a first thought rather than Sona being his first thought, but while this episode did have those signs it wasn't as easy to point out and make sense as it is to point it out in another episode I noticed it in.
