I'm finally getting into historical romance after avoiding it for too long. Weirdly, this is because of Bridgerton, even though the show is often boring and the books feel as old as they are. Can you help me find overtly feminist books with sex scenes that are meaningfully connected to the characters and/or the plot. I enjoy fic, but I want the exact opposite of it when I'm reading a novel. Thanks!
Sure!
Scarlett Peckham is a great starting point here. Her books are on the more creative side re: sex scenes (by which I mean mildly kinky lol but also INTENTIONALLY kinky, as in the characters know what kink is) but she's very interested in the movements around them and come from diverse backgrounds. Her recently-concluded Society of Sirens trilogy is about a group of friends who campaign for women's rights, etc; what makes it more interesting to me than say Evie Dunmore books (I'll be honest, not a big fan of those, and they WILL get recommended to anyone who asks for feminist historical romance) is that the heroines legitimately come from different walks of life. One of them is a "rakess" who's basically a high class lady gone rogue; one of them is a biracial heiress; one is a courtesan who actually doesn't hate sex work but also can acknowledge its pros and cons.
This series also has some of the more consistently... I don't wanna say "beta" heroes, but none of them are alpha males and they're also not straightforward "cinnamon rolls".
Sarah MacLean has a great ongoing series called Hell's Belles about a group of female friends who fuck shit up for the sake of helping women who need them. The most recent book hits on the subject of abortion rights especially, which I looove. All MacLean books are written with feminism in mind, but this series is probably the most explicitly feminist.
Joanna Shupe is another author I'd blanket recommend on that level. Her Uptown Girls trilogy has a heroine, for example, who wants to open a casino for women and hits on things like an "unconventional" happily ever after (i.e., one where being together and happy forever doesn't necessarily mean marriage and babies.... people HATED that Florence and Clay were like "oh we're just gonna fuck each other and not have kids for the rest of our lives" and I liiiived).
Her Fifth Avenue Rebels series is also quite feminist, both casually and more politically. Our first book has a tennis playing heroine, and the last focuses on a heroine who spends a lot of her free time providing birth control to poor women, while also being upfront about her sexuality, the fact that she's had an abortion and doesn't regret it, the damage the Comstock Act caused... Also, her hero is completely in awe of her. I WOULD recommend reading this series in order, as they're all good and that last book is at its best when you see the buildup of the leads beforehand.
Grace Callaway definitely has a lighter tone... while actually hitting on some pretty dark shit... But if you want something that's feminist, super sexy, and kinda campy, Lady Charlotte's Society of Angels is literally Victorian Charlie's Angels with a female "Charlie". There is a lot of sex in these books, but I find it really fun and about getting the characters to bond. She also gets into subject matter that a lot of (white) authors don't... Like the Opium Wars.
Beverly Jenkins, of course, is one of the best out there. Her characters are more quietly feminist, but it's kind of an obvious part of the stories because she's not interested in white society at all. She also writes excellent female friendships and familial relationships. I'd recommend trying Forbidden (the Black heroine goes out west and becomes a cook, falls for a rich white man, thinks they can't be together, is unaware that he actually is NOT white and is the son of an an enslaved woman and a plantation owner who left the South and is now passing) or To Catch a Raven (really fun heist-y romance that involves the THEFT OF THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE) to start, though Indigo is my favorite of hers.
Diana Quincy writes really fun, feminist-streaked romance novels, some of which star Palestinian characters. Her most recent book is The Duke Gets Desperate and I fucking loved it. An American businesswoman inherits a castle and shows up like "Okay but we need to start hosting paid tours here because otherwise it's a money pit and I'm selling" while the duke who insists she did not actually inherit gasps in horror because you can't! Host! Tours! IN A CASTLE!!!!
Hotel of Secrets by Diana Biller is a great one. The heroine is the third generation to run this hotel in Vienna after her grandmother and mother did. They've also been consistently officially single (her grandmother actually has a female partner and her mother is a rich man's mistress) and illegitimate. The heroine is very independent, has no shame about her sex life, and is both funny and practical... Then people start trying to kill her and the strait-laced undercover American spy who's been at the hotel has to save her. Also he's a virgin. Fast-paced, funny, super romantic, and very unconventional.
Minerva Spencer has an entire trilogy about a group of women who perform in a circus—The Wild Women of Whitechapel. Very feminist, very fun, there's dueling and boxing and men who are very happy to be with women who could step on them.
Definitely get into Adriana Herrera's Las Leonas series—it's about a group of friends who leave the (now) Dominican Republic for Paris. You get everything from birth control to Lesbian Paris discussed, as well as tons of romance, fingerbanging on the Eiffel Tower, and more.

my intro no. 3 or smth
fun fact: this post is sponsored by my insomniac issues and weird humor, enjoy WELCOME TO MY BLOG :) i support all races, genders, sexualities, and if you don't, i suggest you exit 🤗
✻ about alias and pronouns: you can call me nicole, nini, or coli. she/her. i'm a taurus personality type: infp-t. chloreic-melancholic. chaotic good. gryffindor.
im an asian-american bi-curious disaster teen with a mouthful of vulgar language and a head full of dreamscapes and colors, and a fanfic enthusiast. i tend to drown myself in overthinking and fake scenarios. you'll probably see me leaning on the wall of a cafe on a rainy evening while reading something like the bell jar or anything that involves a depressed lesbian woman from the 1900s (it's weird, i know). i'm often lost in my head and losing my grip to reality because reality hurts. despite the fact that i'm a dreamer, i have high expectations for my future (such as becoming a marvel actress in my late teenage years and meeting THe ZeNdaYAaa). anyways...
i am a mcu fanatic. in fact, the reason why i'm not straight is because of scarlett johansson as the black widow in captain america: civil war (i mean how can a woman look so beautiful). i am in love with middle aged/early thirties female celebrities (taylor swift, anne hathaway, scarlett johansson, kristen stewart, rihanna, lizzie olsen, i could go on and on), and also with old men that fought in world war ii (bucky barnes and steve rogers). it's kind of weird. also i'm obsessed with tom holland and zendaya. VERRRY obsessed.
i write spideychelle fanfics iykik
dni list: any homophobic/transphobic/whateversexualityphobic person. y'all are not welcome.
anon is always open! 💕
✻ favorites flower: lily of the valley season: autumn (think about it-- cloudy skies, red and orange leaves everywhere you go, doc martens against scattering pavement, scraps of waxy parchment under fingers, the cool crisp air) or maybe summer (cardboard cutouts of the city under rooftops, hot mid july air, that kind of sugar high you get without illegal shit, dragonflies landing on spllitered wood, sunlight streaking across green hills) holiday: christmas ⭐ scent: the yellowing pages of an old book, laundry detergent (idk it smells good ok) tv show: wandavision or gilmore girls movies: oh sweetheart i have so many... (spider-man: homecoming, captain america: civil war, black widow, thor: ragnarok, basically ANy MARvEl mOVie, 10 things i hate about you, twilight etc) model: def naomi campbell colors: platinum, periwinkle, midnight blue, garnet red, maroon books: OMFG (the bell jar, the unabridged journals of sylvia plath, villette by charlotte bronte, so basically any 20th century queer women's book, my year of rest and relaxation, the harry potter series, red white and royal blue, normal people etcetc) actors/actresses: ZENDAYA (seriously how does someone that hot exist), kristen stewart, tom holland, chris evans, scarlett johansson, anya taylor joy aesthetics: downtown girl, chaotic academia, messy french girl, uptown girl, divine feminine animals: cats and dogs!! MUSIC ARTISTS: taylor swift, lana del rey, arctic monkeys, girl in red, lou reed, deftones, phoebe bridgers, mazzy star, dream ivory, cigarettes after sex, ariana grande, taylor swift (yeah i mentioned her again but cmon) comfort characters: natasha romanoff, yelena belova, michelle jones-watson, peter parker, tony stark, remus lupin, luna lovegood, mia thermopolis, lane kim cities: new york city, paris, london, austin, los angeles, rome
✻ faq what do you look for in a significant other? what's most important: that i'm comfortable with them. i can laugh and be carefree. they have to be cute and shit, but also kind and funny, sort of chaotic (like me when i'm not shy). the thing i want to do the most is just to hang out, to laugh and feel giddy, to do the cheesiest things like dancing in the rain and watching sunsets and sunrises and doing each others makeup (if they do makeup), and watch early 2000s rom coms and do a marvel movie marathon. im sorry ok how much do you curse? um, it depends. on who is around. if i'm with my wild and unruly friends then i'm the most vulgar of them all, it's actually kind of disturbing but i get really proud when i use 289237479238 vulgar words in a 5-word sentence (how is that possible, you say? well hon everything is possible so). if i'm around my parents, then i'm as clean as a christian minecraft server that you can lick it off the floor (if that fancies you, darlin') (god why did i become british for a sec there). if i'm with people i'm not very familiar with, then it depends on how much they curse. least favorite things/pet peeves? I HATE IT when someone mistakes the lyrics for a song that i know and keep on going. idk but it just gets on my nerves a lot, so beware. especially a taylor song. also, maybe irrelevant but i absolutely despise sad endings in a movie. surprising because i've married to marvel, divorced it, and married it again, had five kids with it (why did i say that god). but still, hate sad endings bc i'm the most tear-sensitive piece of shit you'll ever meet. i cried reading a dog man comic book at age 12. don't ask. future dream? become a marvel actress in late teens, meet and work with tom holland and zendaya (who will both be, hopefully, husband and wife), also simultaneously get into a sapphic summer film about a depressed teen and a lesbian hot chick, meet the love of my life by film and eventually die happy. doubtfully ambitious, i know. i should be a slytherin.
OK BYE FOR NOW 🐸🧶🎨🌌⭐

Hey Triv!🤍
Which HR novel do you wish to see adapted on screen if it's guaranteed that they will do complete justice to it?
My first instinct is to say Kleypas's The Wallflowers series and tbh I'm sticking with it. The series is an endless delight and has *actual* female friendships and just 4 very different love stories in unique settings (I mean 2 of them mostly take place in Stony Cross Park, but there's also Jenner's, the foundry in London, wherever St. Vincent gets his ass beaten, etc.) that would be great as a short/limited series/anthology.
But also, I'd really love to see any HR series that's set around a club setting, like the Scarlett Scott's Suttons, MacLean's Rule of Scoundrels, Lorraine Heath's Sin for All Seasons, or possibly even Joanna Shupe's Uptown Girl series. ACTUALLY, if anyone adapted Joanna's Fifth Avenue Rebel series and did justice to the French Ball scene especially, they have my eternal adoration.

Vocês fizeram uma noite de karaoke? Quais músicas cada um cantou?
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Abby: Jack e eu cantamos o clássico, My Heart Will Go On. A mais difícil da noite, eu diria.
Tumblr media
Megan: Vocês foram ótimos mesmo. O Billy e eu tentamos cantar I Want It That Way tão bem quanto vocês, mas não chegamos perto.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Sam: Quem estava presente naquela noite teve o privilegio de ver o Dominic e eu cantando  What Makes You Beautiful. Não vai se repetir. A Zen formou uma dupla excelente com o Nate, e os dois cantaram Oops!...I Did It Again, a pedido meu.
Tumblr media
Anya: Como eu escolhi Bon Jovi pro Axl, ele me devolveu o favor e me fez cantar Sweet Child O' Mine com a Lori. Eu errei um pouco, mas deu tudo certo no final.
Tumblr media
Love: Por ultimo, eu fiquei junto com minha prima Lorraine, e o Connor nos fez cantar a musica do Irmão Urso, On My Way, porque é meu filme favorito e eu vivia cantando pra irritar ele.

Any books recs if I liked the Maiden Lane series?
For sure!
Minerva/Spencer S.M. LaViolette is an immediate rec. She writes (especially under the LaViolette name) grittier, more intense books. Her Victorian Decadence series is historical erotic romance, but all of her books are higher heat compared to a lot of other trad historicals at the moment, with morally ambiguous characters, heroines who often have a bit more experience in the world, and not as much focus on class. Her Seducers series, which is about three leads who've all been sex workers in the past, especially has a Maiden Lane feel to me. Melissa and The Vicar has a virgin hero for Winter Makepeace fans! LaViolette books especially are a bit gothic-flavored, which is something I also loved about Hoyt.
Laura Kinsale should be read by everyone. She predates Hoyt and again loves that moral ambiguity, the gritty darkness... Not as high heat as Hoyt (mostly—Shadowheart could stand right up there lol) but so good.
Grace Callaway books definitely have a frothier vibe than a lot of Elizabeth Hoyt books, but she has a lot of investigating of the crime, a lot of sex, and a lot of ZANY plots, which is very Maiden Lane to me. Would recommend.
Anna Campbell I've read little of so far, but the one I did try from her (Seven Nights in a Rogue's Bed) gave me Hoyt vibes.
Amalie Howard's Daring Dukes series (spy dukes! pirates! so on!) definitely has a similar like, "dark but adventurous with lot of making out" sensibility.
Gaelen Foley's Ascension trilogy is like... You know, definitely a series written in the late 90s and early 2000s, BUT! I think part of why I glommed on to her writing so quickly was that ML/Hoyt feel. A lot of adventure, a lot of grit, characters who make gray choices, CAMP, hot sex.... Princess remains one of my favorite books I've read in a whiiiile. The Duke also gave me stroooong ML vibes, haven't been able to get into the rest of that series just yet (time management eludes me).
A "seedy underbellly clashing with high society" seires I'll always love and recommend is Joanna Shupe's Uptown Girls trilogy, about a trio of blueblooded sisters getting with markedly less blueblooded, and progressively more criminal, men.
Lorraine Heath's Sins for All Seasons series in particular can give you a bit of that rough and tumble ML vibe. It's about a group of siblings (some by actual blood others less so) who were all left with a "baby farmer" (which is to say, a woman who was basically paid to take care of, i.e. kill, rich men's bastards) and grew up and became these successes in the London underbelly. REEEEALLY good. Lorraine isn't as high heat as Hoyt, but she's one of my favorite writers for a reason, and she knows HIGH DRAMA like Elizabeth Hoyt does.
Scarlett Peckham may interest you! Her original trilogy surrounding a whipping house (tangentially in some cases) is The Secrets of Charlotte Street, and you may want to start there.
KJ Charles's Doomsday Books, about the criminal Doomsday family in the marsh, definitely has like, a sense of wry humor and high heat and gives you a peek at this organized criminal society.
Anne Stuart writes some pretty dark historicals, but they're all good (from what I've read so far) and they'll all give you a similar sense if you're up for it. And they're CRAZY. To Love a Dark Lord may be a good place to start, it's a little tamer than the others I've tried. (A Rose at Midnight remains my favorite I've read thus far, though.)

Scarlette groaned softly as the sound of other girls were complaining about macaroons and their flat bubbly. Meanwhile Scarlette was ordering herself another scotch and she smiled over at her friend and business partner. “Next week, we’ll be stomping on the balls of all those men whoever questioned us.” The brunette was enthralled by it. “My father is probably rolling over in his grave right now at what we’ve accomplished.”

PAUL JEREMY HAINLINE
Twenty-one | Taurus | Straight | Ansel Elgort
SINCE WE SAW HIM LAST
When it comes to Penelope, Paul is seeing the world through new eyes and is desperately trying to make up for all the time they should have been together but he was too dumb to realize it.  Boyfriend Mode™ is activated.
Completely switching gears from a mostly slacker to a straight B student (hey, he’s setting reasonable standards here) is taking a lot out of him.  Luckily the summer has been very relaxing and free of commitment.
He’s trying to lift Kathleen out of this strange funk she’s gotten herself into.  Results may vary.
RECENTLY PLAYED
Girlfriend - Avril Lavigne
Karma Chameleon - Culture Club
Uptown Funk - Mark Ronson feat. Bruno Mars
CONNECTIONS
Penelope Hainline - Mother
Norma, Francis, and Kathleen Hainline - Siblings
Quinton, Reyna, Geneva, and Kailey Voorn - Cousins
Nick, Bridget, Daisy, and Everly Astor - Family friends
Savannah Santucci - His other grumpy girl, family friend
Penelope Lazzari - Girlfriend
Ivy Beaumont - Ex-girlfriend
Scarlett Blake - Pseudo niece
As always, message if you wanna plot!

WHERE HAS HE BEEN?
During MM, Logan started to spend a lot of time with Lucille Fairchild. “Dating” would be a label but they were definitely seeing each other, a lot. He even started to dress a little more respectable, attend public events with champagne flutes and no “Uptown Funk” on the playlist. For a while, he got to have his feet in two separate worlds.
Because he was with Lucille, he and Freya Harrison had a Big argument about it where he (oblivious) did not understand why. So she told him that she liked him. They haven’t spoken since.
As her friend, Scarlett Vandervort invited him to a dinner with her dad and his new fiancé It was...a disaster. Other attendees of the Disaster Dinner were Sapphire, Sophia, Aaron, Alex, Layla, Tyler, Jesse and Jake.
Left Tripp’s house party earlier because he wasn’t feeling it and Oliver Andrews was denied at the door which made him think about all the things he was supposed to be letting go on Isobel’s request.
Afterwards however, Gossip Girl broke her hiatus for one very important blast. Isobel was exposed as a liar, and things began to spiral for Logan from that point on.
First, he tried to apologise to Oliver with whiskey and ice-cream but that didn’t exactly work out all sunshine and sorries. After he tried to keep it together and continue to do life in the  aftermath of it all. #lifeiwthoutisobel and after having been so hurt by her, did not last long.
Finally, Logan packed up a bag and left the UES. He did not say goodbye. He headed to Aspen to ski and smoke, drink and meaninglessly uh, ya’know his troubles away in the luxury log cabin up there. However, he had his mom help to spread the rumour that he was skiing in Europe. She even went on vacay to the French Alps and uploaded photos onto Logan’s Instagram. (there may even have been a Logan cardboard cut out bye).
The only people who know where he is really are Jake, Camille, Charlotte (he confessed after she headed to the Alps and he obvi was Not there) and Faith Middleton. He and Faith actually sort of became friends after Sophia’s party and a lot of struggling. They’ve hung out together in Aspen, gotten tipsy together, skied and maybe even made out a little (as friends).
Also, after Camille vented to him and spilled that she had Isobel slept together, things have been a little off between them. Especially since Is was #exposed.
He is currently still hiding in Aspen. #whereishe
