Firing and being fired (Loss Leader Upper-Intermediate)

Perhaps more than any other field, business English textbooks are inevitably a product of their time because the language and atmosphere in the field change so quickly. A tone that might have seemed appropriate a few years ago might seem overly optimistic, pessimistic or naive today. This lesson, from Loss Leader Upper-Intermediate, was published in the 2008-9 academic year, and illustrates this point.

Shortly after finishing this edition of Loss Leader, TWP invited assistant series editor Stephen Maple to be successful elsewhere. He failed to fulfil his half of that bargain.

Amharic language

Today, after watching the last video that LangFocus post, about Ethiopia and the Amharic language, I realized how important is to have the interest of know about the rest of the world and be conscious that America, Europa and Africa are not the only places to explore and learn from… I will confess that I didn’t know this language exists; but now, I have the personal interest to keep learning from all the cultures that we don’t know. I found the video very interesting, because he explains perfectly the language, also gives some examples, so it’s pretty fun because you can try to say simple phrases, even though you don’t sound like him. So you can say that it’s an interactive video, not boring. I feel motivated to keep learning and trying to improve my English and Japanese level. Does it give me ideas for the future? Of course! Show my friends about this culture so I won’t be the only girl in my school that knows about Amharic.

[Upper-Intermediate Listening] {CHINESE MANDARIN} resource share - film: 非诚勿扰

You may all know the TV series 非诚勿扰 but, whilst searching for some episodes of that show to watch whilst eating my dinner, I stumbled across this film. It was quite enjoyable and I think upper intermediate appropriate, there is nothing too specialized. You can watch the film below, unsubtitled. However if you are able to access Chinese media sites you can find subtitled versions.

This is what we did to summarize a story! :) First, they wrote some sentences and then, they traslated them into emojis.  They chose their best sentence to dear their classmates.  They were thrilled because they could use their cellphones.  It was great!!

Review of cancer-curing pills

My friend has lung cancer and I bought this product in order to cure her. I bought three bottles so as not to miss out on the limited amount, but it is a scam! Although it claims to cure cancer, it actually accelerates it. Despite the fact that doctors said she would live for another 3 years, she died after 3 weeks of taking the medicine. I will sue Sophia and Kohei for killing my friend!

Biography - YouTube channels for English teachers

In this episode we will be introducing you to the channel Biography, which has short (2-4 minutes usually) documentary style videos about the lives of celebrities, writers, politicians etc. These people might be interesting for your students, and / or relevant for the coursebook unit you are working on. 

A lot of the videos showcase famous past figures, but the video we have chosen focuses on Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook. We offer three different activity ideas you can do with students before they watch the video, in order to activate their background knowledge, help them with potentially blocking vocabulary, and scaffold their listening experience.
