i just finished sonic frontiers update 3 and,, oh my god.

this update is literally the sonic game i dreamed of when i was younger. constant character switching based on the story, all characters using all their powers, with all characters working together to defeat some huge threat, with a NEW SUPER FORM AT THE END OF THE FINAL BOSS???

like, seriously, this is the kinda thing id act out with my plushies in 2013.

seeing this update play out the way it did made me so happy. no doubt the best finale to any game ive ever played

I REALLY need Knuckles to be able to absolutely wreck shit in combat in update 3.

Amy too, but I'm thinking about Knuckles' ground melee special in Sonic Battle, the one where he punches so hard there's an explosion? Give me that. I want it to be the sort of thing that, if my controller doesn't vibrate to pieces on impact, it seems like it SHOULD.

what a journey it’s been.

They didn’t have to do all of this. All that was needed was just a better final boss. And yet

We got what was for me, 24 hours of brand new content. New playable characters, new cyberspace challenges with unique gimmicks, a harder difficulty all throughout really testing me how well I know the controls and physics, extra bits of lore.

I am very sorry to still basically beat a dead horse throughout my discussions of this game but: when I played Sonic Forces, I couldn’t shake off this feeling of…emptiness, I guess. This was a game about war, you expected more serious and deeper story beats, but a lot of it felt so fake due to how tonally inconsistent the story felt. The gameplay also not helping and overall, honestly it felt like I was playing a shovelware title or an uninspired platformer that just so happens to feature Sonic. Maybe part of it was bias, as I played Forces long after hearing how really weak of a title it was, but still, I didn’t feel much from beginning to end, I just felt like “oh ok this is happening now.” It felt oddly low budget.

Sonic Frontiers felt like it was worth my time. It felt like it was worth my 60 bucks. I didn’t feel like I was playing some very mid shovelware title, I felt like I was playing something actually competent and confident to be shown to the world. I felt things playing this game, great emotions. Update 3, while not perfect just like the OG game, shows how much more there is to come for this new open zone foundation, and it makes me very, VERY excited for what’s to come going forward. I mean, if they were able to cram so much to do in what seemed to be about a year, I can’t imagine what Sonic Team is now capable with the announced extra manpower for future titles.

This game feels like Sonic Team has finally been freed from the shackles of SEGA’s time management and was able to create something truly passionate and made with so much care about the franchise, and I excitedly wait for what they make next.

sonic frontiers update 3 has me freaking out so much rn omgomg

tails, amy and knuckles in frontiers all have their own character arcs about coming into their own and learning from their past mistakes. the PERFECT way to finish off their arcs in this game is by giving them major roles in the story at the end of the game and letting them be playable.
