Founded in 2013 by Joyce Chan-Varvodic (seen above left, with co-owner Claudia), LANGsura is an online boutique that offers a curated selection of products from Australia, Korea, Los Angeles, and New York. An avid online shopper herself, Joyce became increasingly frustrated with the mounting fees, limited access to products, and long delivery waits associated with international online boutiques. These challenges inspired her to launch LANGsura, providing Canadians with unique products at affordable prices.
Below, we learn more about Joyce, her personal style, and the driving principles behind LANGsura...
TDM: "Lang" means "Beautiful" in Cantonese, and "Sura" means "Girl" in Croatian. How did these two very different cultures come together to form LANGsura's philosophy – “for the love of all things pretty?”
Joyce Chan-Varvodic: I'm of Chinese decent, and my husband is Croatian. Our goal with LANGsura is to always have pieces for women to wear that make them feel beautiful, feminine, and pretty.
TDM: How do you remain true to this concept when deciding on pieces each season?
Joyce Chan-Varvodic: We base our buying decisions on how we think the piece will make the customer feel when they wear it. Our goal isn't to have the trendiest pieces, but pieces that women will feel good in! The pieces we carry are things that are easy to wear - lots of dresses... No thinking involved! We want our customers to have a piece of LANGsura in their closet that is a "go-to," whether they're going on a date, a girls night out, or on vacation!
TDM: In the fashion industry, you constantly have to think ahead - planning for the coming seasons and staying on top of trends. How do you keep your boutique in the future? Are there classic closet staples that you bring back season after season?
Joyce Chan-Varvodic: Staying on top of trends isn't our number one concern, but it is something that we always need to be aware of. My favourite countries to watch for fashion trends are Japan and Australia. I love the unique styles in Japan, and the very feminine looks that come out of Australia. We LOVE and live in dresses, so with each season comes a new style of dress.
TDM: What are five essentials in your own closet? How do you stay trendy while running a business and caring for your children?
Joyce Chan-Varvodic: Five essentials in my closet right now are: My Louis Vuitton vintage backpack - it goes with everything, a Free People cross over top - so easy for breastfeeding, black faux leather overalls that make me feel stylish with no effort, a vintage Sandro sweater I found at TDM, and a slouchy knit hat for my messy hair days - which happen too often.
As much as I would like to be, I am not always looking trendy when I'm toting around my 2 girls, but picking pieces that are easy to add to every day outfits are key. For example, I wore a white t-shirt today but threw on my faux leather overalls instead of just jeans to make my outfit a little more fashion forward.
TDM: LANGsura has seen incredible growth since starting out in 2013. From an at-home boutique, to pop-up shops for friends, to an online store, a mobile shop, and a permanent space at the Toronto Designers Market… Where do you see the brand next?
Joyce Chan-Varvodic: We've done a lot in the last few years, with our most recent addition being the mobile boutique. For 2017, we want to continue to grow and better serve our customers! Our focus will be on the website and using our mobile boutique to reach our customers. Because we have so many styles available, it’s hard to keep the site updated, but for 2017, we want to focus on getting every piece listed on www.langsura.com. We will also be planning out new routes with our mobile boutique, hitting places like Muskoka, Montreal, and different areas around the GTA. We are really looking forward to the new year!
