Let me go

I suppose that’s really what it boils down to: You need to let me go. 

I’ve thought for a long time what to say to you, or whether I even should, because I want to be careful. Regardless of the alternate reality you’ve created for yourself: I have not wanted and do not want to control or hurt you. 

As such, I am not going to fight you on any of the bizarre re-imaginings of our relationship you’ve made. Those are yours to own and they don’t affect me anymore. Don’t get me wrong, they did for a time. As a child of abuse I feared you were right about me in ways that I couldn’t see.

Now I know you were just gaslighting everyone. I own my mistakes and I know what they were. Plus now I have a great understanding of my own tendency to fall into codependency - so there's that.

What I want for you and have always wanted for you is agency and power over your own life. Which is the only reason I write to you now. You need to let me go. I am not the villain of your story and you know this despite the story you tell. Any time you make me the villain, the one evil source of your problems, you remove your own agency and ability to change, grow, and flourish. I write you only because I want that for you and I would regret it if I didn't say at least that.

You ask if I dream of you. I do love you and I do think about our time together but I quite literally never want to see or interact with you again. Which is a feeling unique to you. I don't regret knowing you but I certainly regret staying with you after you cheated. I was selfish and wanted to stay with you, and I was fearful you'd fall back into the things I was trying to help you escape from. I know now that was codependency and it was the beginning of the end.

Anyway this is the last you'll hear from me. I am sorry that I hurt you and I forgive you for all the shitty malevolent things you did to hurt me back. I do hope you flourish in the world.

Let me go. You're strong and don't need a villain.

This is an illustration I did for the August 2014 issue of Popular Science Magazine. The assignment was to show a scifi take on human aging in the future. I wanted to do something relatively positive, so I drew a lady whose life has been been prolonged through cybernetic enhancements and augmentation, so she gets to spend time with her great-great-great-great grandchildren.

I decided to visit the Boston Public Gardens today, to see the bench from Good Will Hunting, so I could pay my respects to one of my idols. I wasn’t alone, as crowds of young and old stood near, bound together by sadness.
