Moments before I happily delivered the opening remarks during the 2nd Edition of the Listening Biennial Symposium (Manila leg). The symposium embarks on a journey of exploring the art of listening and its ability to give and forge ecologies of attention.
This year, the symposium revolves around the themes of community and connection, drawing inspiration from the concepts of barangay and kampung. In these concepts, coming together and forming a community is not seen as a mere task but rather a deep commitment to fostering meaningful connections.
Congratulations to the UP College of Fine Arts and the outgoing UP CFA Parola Gallery Curator, Dr. Dayang Yraola, for organizing this year’s Listening Symposium. Coincidentally, the UP CFA Department of Studio Arts has recently introduced a new sound art course, which has sparked immense interest among students and faculty members. This exciting development not only showcases the dedication to exploring diverse art forms but also signifies the establishment of stronger institutional relationships with other esteemed Southeast Asian universities. It is also worth mentioning that UP CFA has an MOU with Thailand's Silpakorn University and the Multimedia University of Malaysia.
Congratulations @up_cfa 🥂

My second handbuilt ceramic inspired by the Tagalog deity Lakambakod, the god of harvest. The exterior was messily brushed with celadon glaze and then wiped with a rag to get the faded effect. The interior of the bowl is glazed in nutmeg.
It was my first time to glaze so I really was doing it blindly. I was so scared that it got the point that I was just waiting for it outside the kiln while it was cooling off. Fortunately, I got an even desired effect. My sensei even loved how it turned out. Praise the ceramics gods!

Throwback Thursday: ON BOBI VALENZUELA by Norberto Roldan
Bobi Valenzuela was an important figure who brought Hiraya Gallery to prominence in the '80s and '90s. He was also an inspiring mentor to countless young artists emerging from the shadow of Philippine social realism (SR) during that period. As young artists based in Bacolod, I together with Charlie Co, Dennis Ascalon and Nunelucio Alvarado, would regularly visit Hiraya whenever we were in Manila in the early '80s. This was when we met Bobi and his co-curator Mani Chaves whom we eventually became friends with. The two would regularly visit Bacolod to observe and support the local art scene. In 1985, our Bacolod-based artist group Pamilya Pintura had an exhibition at Hiraya, and in succeeding years this would be followed by a string of solo exhibitions by Charlie, Dennis, Nune, and myself. Bobi suffered a stroke sometime in 1997 and was forced to retire from his hectic post at Hiraya. Upon recovery, he managed to work again as part time curator for Kulay Diwa Gallery in Sucat and Boston Gallery in Cubao. When Donna Miranda and I started Green Papaya in 2000, I invited Bobi to help us with programming and to join us as curator. Among the two important exhibitions he curated for Papaya were the inaugural show, The Umbrella Country (which featured Imelda Cajipe-Endaya, Brenda Fajardo, Charlie Co, Nunelucio Alvarado and Santiago Bose), and Santi's last solo exhibition, Traveling Bones Gather No Stones. Sometime in early 2001, I saw an opportunity to explore and widen the scope of our exhibition programming. Gerry Tan had proposed an exhibition of his graduating class from the UP College of Fine Arts (UPCFA). The exhibition, Two for the Road, was a project that explored visual imagery and the physical experience of walking from UPCFA to Papaya in Teachers Village. The class included Patricia Eustaquio, MM Yu, Amy Aragon, Josue Mangrobang, Lea Lim and Liby Limoso, among others. To our surprise, Roberto Chabet came to hang the exhibition -- the first of many future collaborations with Papaya. Unfortunately, I did not anticipate that Two for the Road would compel Bobi and I to take two different roads. He wanted Papaya's trajectory patterned after Hiraya. Although I did not have a fixed vision from the start of what I wanted Papaya to be, I was pretty clear I did not want it to be another Hiraya. I wanted Papaya to be open to possibilities, especially to emerging practices coming from new generations. Due to our curatorial differences, Bobi and I had to amicably go our separate ways. Nevertheless, Papaya recognizes Bobi Valenzuela's significant contributions to its early formation. I am likewise personally grateful for his friendship and support, and I credit him for giving us Bacolod artists our first Manila outings. thoughts of college
I ended up in an art school for college when, throughout my high school life, I've been aiming for a degree in creative writing. My mentors, batch mates, and friends were surprised when I decided to pursue VisComm in UPCFA because, for real tho, what's the connection between mixing colors, playing with light and shadow, manipulating art tools & materials and crafting worlds, creating characters, and having a story to tell? Parang wala naman, diba? I didn't see the connection at first until I applied for a writing org. The things that I learned in UPCFA were put to the test when I was assigned to lead the production work for our applicants' night, and the cover illustration and layout of our batch zine. The whole app process (from the "harsh" criticism I got from my workshop session to the tough questions thrown at me during the final interview) deconstructed everything I knew about stories and literature as a whole. I have a lot to learn, unlearn, and relearn. I even got to meet other aspiring writers coming from VERY different fields as well (such as Chemistry, Engineering, Math, Economics, and Biology) This illustration (which I drew along with a co-app) highlights the connection between two of my greatest passions. It was both a privilege and a challenge to illustrate the cover for a zine in which I also got to write for. I may have landed a conditional membership at first, but I'm glad that I still have another chance to improve my writing, knowing that I already have a community in college that shares my passion for stories. Cheers to the highlight of my first year in college!! :D

Fascinating exhibit by this sem's round of College of Fine Arts students entitled "What if?" that challenges the manifestation of an opposite form derived from the current properties of its materiality. My favorite professor died last week.
He was already sick before the pandemic. Diabetes, kidney problems... god knows what. We were lucky that he survived till now.
I met Sir Joey during that one summer after high school, when I took art workshops to prepare for the Talent Determination Test (TDT).
I had prior training yes, but I really believed that whatever Sir Joey taught me then helped bring out the skill I needed to pass the TDT. To that, I am completely grateful.
He became my Advertising professor when I was on my third year. We all learned a lot from him, and we really appreciated the unorthodox way he taught us about the world we were about to face.
Outside of the classroom, he was the kooky kind of teacher. His hilarious yet cryptic way of communicating, sometimes made sense, sometimes did not was his trademark that will always stay with us.
For all of the things above, I will always be grateful.
I would post this on one of the pages dedicated to his life but I haven’t been connected with my College for a very long time, and I feel like my anecdote is somewhat too personal, too private, and meaningless to other people. I also lost most of my pictures of my classmates with him back in College when Multiply crashed.
I mourn as I view the pics and the stories my fellow alumnus would post on our Facebook groups and on their pages. I feel like I’ll never encounter a teacher such as Sir Joey ever again. And I feel as if a part of my time spent in UPCFA has died with him.
