London is a city that has always been deeply uneven, with plenty of cultural treasures to hide the poverty in the Tower Blocks and the underpasses. London is effectively the main of the UK economy, and everything is geared towards it. Hence it retains a degree of economic dynamism that allows a degree of optimism, after all there's always a new restaurant, new exhibition, new flagship store, new play. Sure most workers are dirt poor, living on mashed avocado, and hoping the landlord gets visited by 3 Ghosts at Christmas, but there's the dream of making it in the big city.
Outside the London bubble, large parts of the country are either in despair, or have totally given up. Roads, bridges, hospitals, and schools are crumbling. Police have almost disappeared outside traffic stops. Courts are backlogged, prisons overfilled & well past their designed lifespan. Companies face significant trade barriers with the EU. The water industry is essentially operating on leveraged debt and mostly owned by oversea's pension funds, whilst the infrastructure collapses and raw sewage is being pumped into the rivers/seas. Everyone is underpaid compared to the cost of living, but also compared to many comparable roles in other countries.
In the shires, the more well paid commuter class can still have a nice life, but they are feeling a sharp pinch. Holidays cut. Cars held on to much, much longer than before. Meals out being reduced. Optional extras like music or sports for the kids cancelled. Impulse purchases stopped. All of which sounds like "oh poor Emma can't get her daughter Lucinda piano lessons boo hoo" but think about the economic impact. That is money that would have gone to a piano teacher (usually self employed), to the coffee shop whilst Emma waits, to a music shop for music, perhaps a CD or concert tickets to something Lucinda played at a lesson. Then when Lucinda grows up instead of having a career in arts or entertainment, even at her local bar or church, she doesn't know how to play piano. So society as a whole has lost a musician, and Lucinda as a person flourishes slightly less. The UK arts sector is one of our biggest economic powerhouses, yet it is routinely ignored and hammered by the govt. Art & music are regarded as luxury items, despite contributing £1.6 billion to the annual economy (2021 at 5.6%). That's huge, bigger than the fishing industry which contributes £1.4 billion (2021 at 4%). Yet with rents sky rocketing, and school budgets in utter crisis, arts/music get dropped and creative talent has to switch to more routine jobs to survive. UK Musicians are dropped from EU events following the botched visa system, and international work is increasingly harder for them to get.
Outside the diminishing middle class, the real difficulty and poverty of the UK hits home. People are not sure whether the next rent payment or electricity will quite literally bankrupt them and leave them homeless. Wages are mostly static, with few rises outside a number of key sectors. Some areas have seen wage growth, but that has been concentrated in a small number of jobs (especially finance/management). The population is aging, and the care system is left almost entirely to private companies in a very disjointed, expensive manner. For most people the only credible hope of a financially better life is to inherit or to win the lottery or to commit crime. This is strikingly similar to the pattern seen in many developing world economies.
For example, I have worked in the public sector for 20 years. In that time I have trained, gained professional qualifications, led larger teams, upskilled on IT/project management and become more productive. Since my pay has been capped at a 0.5% rise, it is a real terms wage cut. So I've become more productive yet I'm paid less. Why should I 1) carry on trying to be more productive, & 2) stay in the job? Productivity increases from workers have to be linked to a personal reward, as well as a benefit to an employer or there's no point for the employee. Hence "quiet quitting".
So the UK is in the dire position of poor infrastructure, rampant poverty, and a population that no longer believes hard work or being productive will improve their own lives, only maintain their survival. This is not a recipe for a flourishing economy or nation. The worst thing is that the UK has started to lose hope that things can get better without a magical solution. Without at least some hope, we are doomed.

In the second in a series of personal perspectives, the John Snow Project talks to [a successful, active early-thirties professional] based in California, who developed Long COVID after his third SARS-CoV-2 infection.
Perspective: I Did Everything Right and Things Still Went Wrong - John Snow Project
NOTE: “did everything right” in this headline is not in terms of what COVID-informed people know and do, but rather the average person who follows CDC & govt. guidelines: the “vax and relax” approach.
Excerpts:
Salvatore was Covid cautious and followed public health advice from the outset, including with regard to the vaccines.
“I completed my first vaccine series in May 2021 with two doses of Pfizer. Believing I was protected, I lived normally and was infected in September 2021. I had a known exposure and lost my sense of smell and taste. I was sick for about a day and went to bed early that night, but I didn’t even take time off work. I went back to my remote duties the next day and felt fine after a few days. I had my third Pfizer vaccine in March 2022, and was infected for a second time in September 2022 and for a third time in January 2023.”
Salvatore wasn’t initially concerned about his subsequent infections.
“I tested positive on a Cue at-home test for the second and third infections. Both infections were even milder than the first, maybe because I took Paxlovid. Within a week of the second infection, I developed heart palpitations, which were not initially linked to Long COVID. After the third infection, I began to develop many more Long COVID symptoms, and was diagnosed with the condition.”
Looking back, Salvatore had experienced persistent symptoms since his first infection, and developed new ones with each subsequent infection.
“I was aware of Long COVID since I had persistent loss of taste and smell going back to my first infection, but I never really considered it to be Long COVID, as it did not have a major effect on my life. The third infection is really what tipped me into Long COVID. Since then, I've had intermittent chest pain, heart palpitations, various neurological issues (face numbness, buzzing in the feet), joint pain, anxiety, issues with my vision, fatigue, complete alcohol and caffeine intolerance. I alternate between good weeks and bad weeks, with the bad weeks slowly becoming less severe. Some symptoms have totally resolved, while new ones occasionally emerge (the neurological symptoms did not arise until 3-4 months after my third infection). Although I have been able to keep my job and parent my daughter, this year has been one of the worst of my life. Where previously I was having fun on the weekends, for the last 8 months, I have basically spent my weekends laying on the couch and trying to recover. This year, I had two vacations planned, but cancelled them both because of how bad I've felt. My wife and I have delayed having another child because of my health. Even if I do recover fully, I have read so many stories of people relapsing back into Long COVID, that I am afraid I will never be fully healthy. For that reason, we may not have any more children because of Long COVID.”
Salvatore emailed Dr Bob Wachter, after the noted physician said booster vaccinations or infections will protect people from Long COVID. Dr Wachter posted on Twitter that boosters or infections “will protect you from severe infection & Long Covid – I give them 1 year of credit in this regard.”
Salvatore asked Dr Wachter to delete his erroneous tweet, saying, Just reading it has caused me immense anguish knowing that someone might believe you and wind up in a similar situation [to me]. I hope you can appreciate how someone could reasonably hold you responsible for their Long COVID in the future.”
We asked Salvatore how the medical profession has responded to his Long COVID.
“Most doctors have believed me, but none have offered any substantive treatments. For example, my cardiologist at UCSF ended our last appointment by encouraging me to take CBD oil, telling me he hoped I would get better. The CBD oil seems to help a little bit, but I haven't gotten better despite his hopes. An ER doctor I saw after my face went numb was kind and caring, but described me and people like me as a "science experiment" that no one really knows how to help. Primary Care Providers have been hit or miss. Once I brought in a document with my list of symptoms to a new Primary Care Provider. He ignored it, then suggested the only explanation was that I was suffering from HIV. I have no risk factors for HIV. Once when I was feeling really bad, I visited urgent care. When I told the doctor that I had caught Covid three times, he implied that it was my fault, and told me not to catch Covid again, as if I hadn’t tried, or could somehow wave a magic wand to prevent it in the future.”
[ Comment: The PCP’s explanation is unsurprising. It’s been said repeatedly that Long COVID is similar to HIV and AIDS — the latter can also start as a “mild” or asymptomatic HIV infection and becomes much worse later on. LC affects the body / immune system and presents in some similar ways.
“If they are not treated, almost all people infected with HIV will develop AIDS (Stage 3). Some people develop AIDS within a few years of infection. Others remain completely healthy after 10 or even 20 years (called long-term nonprogressors).“ - Penn Medicine ]
CONTD.
Salvatore isn’t alone in his experiences of Long COVID but wishes more people would pay attention to the risks.
“My friends and family have been broadly supportive. It might be because I have several family members and friends who also have Long COVID, or who had it in the past and recovered. I don't think my experience has actually influenced anyone else's behavior, except my wife, who masks diligently because of me. When I talk about Long COVID, people who were already behaving in a COVID-cautious manner see it as validating, while those who weren't react with a sort of hopeless indifference. Long COVID isn’t rare. It affects many people who catch Covid even if they caught Covid before. Even if they are young and healthy. Even if they are vaccinated or not vaccinated.”
Salvatore has a message for people who don’t think about the risks of Long COVID.
“You probably won't develop Long COVID after your Covid infection, but there's a good chance that you might. The only way to avoid Long COVID is to avoid catching Covid. The vaccines and Paxlovid seem to help but aren't a panacea. If you get Long COVID, it will probably be somewhat mild, but it also could be so severe that it will derail your life entirely. Doctors will not be able to help you -- there are no cures or even approved treatments.”
Salvatore is concerned about the failure of governments to respond to the danger of Long COVID.
“Government officials that downplay or ignore the risk of Long COVID are directly responsible for the suffering of millions of people. Even if there's nothing to be done about it, at least telling people the truth would give them a chance to make a decision about the amount of risk they're willing to take. Be honest with the public about Long COVID: stop downplaying it.”
He is also concerned about the systemic risk Long COVID poses to social and economic wellbeing.
“Long COVID is the biggest, most mispriced risk facing the United States. Based on the latest studies, it's entirely possible that as many as one-third of Americans could be struggling with Long COVID in just a few years. Many of these people may be too sick to work, which poses a huge risk for the economy, and may already be manifesting in the form of the persistent labor shortage. As the number of people with Long COVID grows, health care and disability systems will come under even more strain. Long COVID should be treated as seriously as the initial COVID outbreak.”

Archivists are not librarians: Understanding the differences [Part 3]
Continued from part 2
Tumblr media
On the left, a trading card of Nu from the Star Wars Trading Game. On the right, Nu calls herself an archivist in the comic Star Wars: Darth Vader no. 9.
There are many important duties of an archivist, including preserving and providing access to original materials, involvement with records life cycle phases, records selection (i.e. archival appraisal), and arranging (then describing) collections of records. Archivists also work to protect records from theft and physical damage and work to ensure that digital records will be available when needed in the future. Of these duties, librarians also select their materials, try to protect them from physical damage and theft, and describe the materials. [4] However, the records that librarians work with on a day to day basis is nothing like those which archivists work with, and there are different systems of organization and arrangement. This is why it is always a problem when a librarian has control of an archives and claims they have the "right" way of organizing the records, inevitable messing it up for all those to follow, resulting in an archivist having to fix it later.
Reprinted from my Wading Through the Cultural Stacks WordPress blog. Originally published on Dec. 9, 2021.
These are not, of course, the only duties of an archivist. In fact, there are efforts by archivists to identify essential evidence of society, ensuring its availability for use, plan and direct publications, exhibitions, and outreach programs, make records accessible for use and assist patrons in locating information. Archivists are also concerned with records which have been deemed important enough to be kept for an extended period of time and sometimes are in charge of the archive itself. Managing records, along with transparency, ensuring the survival of provenance, keeping original order, and creating a coherent collection through well-informed and pro-active selection and collecting, are a vital part of being an archivist too. [5]
Librarians, on the other hand, can represent the library, providing patrons help with audiovisual and technology matters, engaging in reference services, assists other staff, develops grants, and selects (and maintains) audiovisual collections. Such librarians may also have strong computer, communication, and organizational skills, and enjoys learning. [6]
While some of these skills, like maintaining collections, organization, assisting staff, and various skills, would be helpful in an archival environment, there are other important skills which can't be gained by working in a library, where you are shelving and organizing books, DVDs, and CDs, for instance.

The Kosovo government announced on Wednesday that the new minimum wage will be 2 euros per hour, which amounts to 350 euros gross a month for a full-time job.
“This will be enforced from October 1, giving businesses and organisations the opportunity to make the necessary adjustments,” Hekuran Murati, Minister of Finance, announced at the government’s Wednesday meeting. He explained that around 150,000 employees, mainly in the private sector, will benefit from the decision.
The minimum wage in Kosovo currently is 130 euros a month for those under 35 and 170 for those up to 65.
In 2022, the government aimed to increase the minimum wage to 250 euros net and 265 euros gross.
But Prime Minister Albin Kurti claimed that, “since that proposal, the law first was blocked for more than one year by the opposition and then it was sent to the Constitutional Court, where it was delayed for 11 months. Considering this time distance, the level of 264 euros today looks outdated and not enough. Therefore, today we will approve another level (of the minimum wage) which reflects the developments of these two years and the reality of society”.
The Constitutional Court has meanwhile ruled that the amended law did not violate the constitution, paving the way for the increase of the minimum wage.
The amended Law on the Minimum Wage had received much criticism, and was notably opposed by the Kosovo Liberation Army, KLA, Veterans Organisation because it did not include veterans whose pensions, based on the law on KLA War Veterans, cannot be lower than the minimum wage.
The new law regulates that, “until the final categorization of the list of KLA war veterans, the government … on the proposal of the responsible Ministry for Finance, shall decide the amount of pensions determined by this law, depending on budgetary possibilities, the cost of living and eventual inflation”.
Tax rates have also been changed. There will now be no tax imposed on monthly salaries up to 250 euros. The previous law taxed monthly income from 80 euros. For salaries ranging from 251 euros to 450 euros, the tax will be 8 per cent. For salaries over 450 euros it will be 10 percent.
The decision comes five days after the much disputed amended Law on Minimum Wage was enforced, and days before the deadline expires on August 30 for parties to notify the Central Election Commission, CEC, about their participation in the next elections.
President Vjosa Osmani has set February 9, 2025 as the date of the next parliamentary election. Kurti’s Vetevendosje Movement won the February 14, 2020, elections by a landslide. The government has become the only one since the 2008 declaration of independence from Serbia to remain in office for the entirety of its four-year mandate.
On Wednesday, the CEC approved a preliminary voting list of 2,047,148 voters, which is 161,700 more voters than in the October 17, 2021 local elections. Members of the Kosovo diaspora regularly participate in elections.

J6 National Guard Truth
National Guard Captain Blows Up J6 Narrative, Accuses U.S. Govt of Lying to the American People
"I'm here today to aid the subcommittee in resolving factual errors in the official record of what happened on January 6th, 2021, specifically regarding the alleged District of Columbia National Guard delayed response caused by a critical presidentially appointed, Senate-confirmed Pentagon senior officials," Captain Timothy Nick testified under oath on Capitol Hill on Wednesday. [...]
"First, I want to explain my role on January 6th. I was assigned as aid to camp the personal assistant to Major General William Walker, the commanding General of DC National Guard. It was my only second day on the job (!). Please focus on alleged facts found in the November 16th, 2021 Department of Defense Inspector General's multidisciplinary review into the DC National Guard response and Department of Defense's role that day."
"I can say unequivocally that the Inspector General's Review is riddled with inaccuracies, misstatements, and perhaps false flags and narratives regarding how critical Pentagon senior officials responded when our republic was under great stress (!!)."
"For instance, during a conference call at 2:31 PM with members of United States Army, US Capitol Police, Metropolitan Police Department, District of Columbia Government, and US Secret Service Uniform Division, the US Army's Lieutenant General Walter Piatt, Director of Army staff and the Army's Lieutenant General Charles Flynn, Director of Chief of Staff of Operations were on the call." Also was Colonel John Lubas, executive officer to the Secretary of the Army."
"The Army FALSELEY DENIED that General Flynn was ever on the call. This is false and material on its face. Lieutenant Flynn was on the call and even participated in discussions. The defense inspector's review also rounds language papering over the fact that Lieutenant General Piatt, Lieutenant General Flynn, while on the call discussed how they did not like the OPTICS."
"That is a direct quote, and they stated it would be in their best military advice to recommend to the Secretary of the Army, Ryan McCarthy, to deny the request from Command General William Walker to deploy the DC National Guard and aid US Capitol Police in restoring restoration of Order Liberty on Capitol Hill."
"In addition, former [Army] Secretary Ryan McCarthy claims he was on a two three 1:00 PM call and spoke on that call. This is FALSE, unless he was in the room shadowing the call and he did not speak nor identify himself."
"He was not on the call. He was en route to Washington, DC Regional office at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to support that agent's concept of operations plan for January 6th."
"He went on the claim that he called and spoke to Major General Walker at least twice, ordering the deployment of the DC National Guard. This is also FALSE. At no time did General Walker take any calls, nor did we ever hear from the secretary on any of the ongoing conference calls or the secure video teleconferencing throughout the day."
"This I know because I was with the Command General the entire time recording events throughout the day. Major General Walker told by staff officers to stand by with respect to deploying to the Capitol Hill. Only at 5:09 PM in the early evening, which I wrote down in my wheel book, was the DC Guard given an order to deploy and move to the Capitol to assist Capitol Police."
"We arrived too late. One American laid dead with other sisters and brothers injured, including federal and local law enforcement officers. We were ready and standing by. I know if we were able to deploy immediately, when General Walker made the request, the National Guard could have helped and civil disturbance and restored public order quickly."
"The Army National Guard motto was always ready, always there. The DC National Guard was ready to help and assist Capitol Police, but we were NOT ALLOWED to do our job due to paralyzed decision-making by acting Secretary of Defense,Chris Miller and Secretary of the Army, Ryan McCarthy..."
"This led to a crisis in federal leadership at the Pentagon and delayed the DC response by 3 hours and 19 minutes."
This is critical testimony exposing the U.S. government as perpetrating a false narrative of events for January 6 to frame Donald Trump as participating in a treasonous "insurrection" when the opposite was true.
The President of the United States had pre-authorized the deployment of 10,000 National Guard troops and delegated this responsibility to the Secretary of the Army.
But instead of deploying National Guard troops to secure the capitol during the election challenges in the Electoral College, the Pentagon delayed dispatching troops over an alleged concern for "optics," even as the same government would later call January 6 'an existential threat to democracy.'
The U.S. government allowed the January 6 riots to happen in order to frame Donald Trump and his supporters as 'insurrectionists.' It is simple as that.

By • Olalekan Fagbade Federal Govt clears air on availability of fuel ahead of yuletide season The Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), Alhaji Mele Kyari has assured that in three months the country would not experience fuel qeues. Kyari said this when he paid a courtesy visit to the leadership of the Senate. He said that the passage of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) had ensured that energy supply was stable and creating cheaper energy for Nigerians . ” And I guarantee you your excellency that we will not see any shortages in our country. “You may see a number of scattered reports that of filling stations that people will call it qeues. They are not,” he said. While linking the challenges in the sector to oil theft and pipeline vandalisation, Kyari said that the country had recovered up to N1.7 million barrels of crude oil following increased monitoring by the independent pipeline security companies, and the military. “In the last 5-6 months government security agencies and private security companies have done things differently, and it has yielded results.” He said that NNPCL was resolute at meeting its targeted contribution to the budget. He assured that the NNPCL would restart the Port Harcourt refinery in December, to be followed by the Warri refinery in the first quarter of 2024. This, he said would be complimented by small scale refineries. Keyari said that the corporation had recorded a N274 million profit in 2021, a growth from 2018. He said that the NNPCL may post profit in excess of N2 trillion in 2023; adding that in 2024 Nigeria would be a net exporter of petroleum products. President of Senate , Godswill Akpabio, tasked the management of the NNPCL to seek ways of deepening the consumption of locally produced petroleum products. He also called for the establishment of modular refineries, as well as the renovation of existing ones to create a multiplier effect which would include creation of jobs for youths, and more security for the country. He said the senate was supporting the efforts to end oil theft and pipeline vandalisation which, according to him, was resulting in revenue losses to the nation. The Senate President said that the Senate would partner with the NNPCL in creating legislations that would smoothen ease of business for stakeholders in the oil and gas sector. He commended the corporation for ensuring an end to the fuel subsidy regime and called for capacity building for legislatures to ensure proper legislative input in the sector. “Nigerians want to hear good news and you came with a very good news. And this is good news.” (NAN)

Madras High Court delivers split verdict on release of Tamil Nadu Minister Senthil Balaji
Justices J Nisha Banu and D Bharatha Chakravarthy gave the ruling on the HCP filed by Balaji's wife against her husband's "illegal detention".
Tumblr media
CHENNAI: The Madras High Court on Tuesday delivered a split verdict on a habeas corpus petition (HCP) seeking to declare Tamil Nadu Minister V Senthil Balaji’s arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on money laundering charges was illegal and setting him free.
While Justice J Nisha Banu, presiding the bench, held that the HCP is maintainable and the ED was not entrusted to get police custody under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and ordered setting Senthil Balaji free, Justice D Bharatha Chakravarthy dissented saying the petition was not maintainable as the petitioner has not made out a case to prove the remand was illegal.
The dissenting judge ruled that ED is entitled to take him under custody.
“It is in the interest of the detenue that he was admitted to the hospital due to his health condition. He was not under the custody of the ED for even a minute. So, the hospitalisation period can be excluded from the first fifteen days and the ED is entitled to take him under custody,” the dissenting judge ruled.
He ordered, “Therefore, HCP shall stand dismissed. The period from June 14 till such time the accused is fit for custody of the respondent shall be deducted from the initial period of fifteen days. The detenue accused shall continue to take treatment at the Kauvery Hospital until discharge or for a period of ten days from today or whichever is earlier. Thereafter, if he requires further treatment, it can be done only at the prison hospital.”
Since the judges differed on the matter, it will be placed before Chief Justice SV Gangapurwala for further orders.
The HCP was filed by Megala, wife of Senthil Balaji, after he was arrested by the ED in the wee hours of June 14 after a marathon search and grilling at his official residence.
After complaining of chest pain, he was admitted to the Govt Multi-Speciality Hospital where the doctors diagnosed him with blocks in the heart and recommended immediate surgery.
Based on an interim order of the division bench on the HCP, he was shifted to Kauvery Hospital and underwent bypass surgery.
In the meantime, the principal sessions court, which had ordered his judicial custody for fourteen days, granted police custody for the ED to interrogate him subject to his health conditions.
Since the doctors advised against custodial interrogation, the ED gave up the exercise.
Senthil Balaji was booked under PMLA by the ED in 2021 based on the FIR filed by the Central Crime Branch, of Chennai City police, on the cash-for-jobs scam committed when he was the Transport Minster during the AIADMK government.

IndusViva Back in Business - indusviva
After the long struggle, finally, on 26th July 2021, the Hon’ble High Court of Telangana passed an interim order on the writ petition that was filed by IndusViva Healthsciences Pvt. Ltd., directing to de-freeze all the bank accounts and not interfere with the organization’s day-to-day operations. Moreover, the court had set aside an impugned Preventive Detention order on the key people of the company on 27th September 2021.
Who are IndusViva, and what do they do?
IndusViva is a Direct Selling company that started its journey in 2014 with only 1 product. In 2021, they are the proud owner of 5 world-class ayurvedic health promoter products manufactured under the licence of the Department of Ayush. They are the first Direct Selling company in India to start their operations in the ‘Motherland of Direct Selling’, United States of America and also expanded in multiple continents with their exclusive product, iVed. Although they haven’t started operating in many countries, the customer base is prevalent all over the globe. IndusViva has set the best example in the industry by marching up from nowhere to be one of India's top ten Direct Selling companies. Other companies in that list are more than fifteen years old, but this organization did it in only six years.
IndusViva is a company that rose to its feet when the whole world, including the Direct Selling industry, was entirely under lockdown due to the deadly pandemic. After the 1st phase, they completely digitalized their business strategy from physical to virtual; empowered the distributors by training them with several digital tools through virtual meetings. Even though they have faced extensive damage, they still managed to have nearly the same turnover as the previous year. They had a total turnover of approximately INR 1450 crores in 7 years, out of which nearly half was paid to the direct sellers as commission for selling the products and almost 200 crores to the Central and State Govt. as various taxes like GST, Income Tax, TDS etc. They sell their products through a direct selling/multi-level marketing model, a legitimate economic activity per Consumer Protection Act 2019, and Govt. of India-issued Direct Selling Guidelines, 2016. The Government is on the verge of issuing Consumer Protection (Direct Selling) Rules, 2021. Though the Govt. of India and NITI Aayog publicly stated multiple times that the Direct Selling industry is a scope for the coming days and this industry can accommodate the opportunity-seeking youth of the country, but the steps initiated by them till now are not enough to protect the interest of the young job aspirants and the companies who are ready to provide the opportunities. Due to the lack of such clarity and proper education on the part of the law enforcement agencies, the future of the young aspirants and the companies are in darkness. Therefore, the Government has to come up with more clarity to protect their interest and the interest of the consumers.
