PSA for international Doctor Who fans who, like me, buy their Doctor Who Blurays from the UK: The 60th Anniversary Specials set recently released in the UK is region-locked to Region B.

This means it will not play on BD players purchased outside of the UK, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Australia, and New Zealand (regions A and C).

If you have a region-free BD player, or a player that lets you switch between different regions, you don't have anything to worry about. Your player may also have an unlock code that enables you to change the region lock-out, or enable you to switch between regions manually.

PC/Mac BD-ROM drives also typically let you change the region code, but only a certain number of times. Last time I checked, there was software that let you override this limit for the DVD region, but I'm not sure if that's also true for Bluray discs.

If your primary BD player is a console like an Xbox or PlayStation, you're SOL.

So far hasn't affected any other Doctor Who releases from the UK - I also bought "The Underwater Menace" recon and the remastered Series 1-4 set on Bluray, both of which play just fine - so I imagine it's a result of the Disney+ deal and will only impact the New New Who stuff. This probably means we won't get a UHD Bluray release anytime soon, as UHD Blurays don't have region-locking on them.

if this ever happens to you go on google and look for 'region unlock' and your specific DVD player. There will be some konami code ass combination of buttons on the remote that put it into unlocked mode and then it will play. When i did mine many years ago it said 'congrations - region unlocked' or something of that nature. Mostly i remember that it was specifically spelt 'congrations' and not congratulations.

Anyway information should be free and region locks are a scam that you can and should just bypass

At least my medical records have anemia on them so if I sleep away most of a day I have a legit reason.

Almost forgot I did do some physical stuff I probably shouldn't have done but now all the Halloween pajamas are in one tub and can stay there until the end of summer. Most are getting worn out and I should consider making a quilt out of them but I'm going to wear them as long as possible.

Also managed to put some odds and ends away, the new metal stamps got as far as the container with all the metal stamps but the resin bits didn't get in to that exact tub. There are several smaller tubs with resin supplies that can go in to one bigger tub but it will make me want to make something to use up one of the bottles and this weather isn't right for it.

Still, if you have any form of ADHSquirrel clear 'project tubs' that hold the supplies you need for hobbies are your friend. You can see what hobby is in there, or stick a label on, and everything you need is right there.

I just put the hand full of crochet thread books in with the crochet thread for now. I can't keep the hooks in there because I have several things that use them but I also made a cute project bag with knit and crochet terms on it to hold the hooks and needles.

The next movie I watch might be Cherry Bomb with Robert Sheehan and Rupert Grint. They were in my dream last night but it was also tangled with Robert's audio book and talking about Borzoi snoots. When that scenario changed to something I wasn't liking I literally said I'm too old for this shit and walked out of that part or my dream. Woke up not long after.

First step with non region DVDs is to see if the VLC media player recognizes them, it does with my Region 0 Japanese Tea Ceremony and a couple of the Pet Shop Boys ones.

Second step is to see if you can put a remote control code in to one of your older players and unlock it. All was good until the door broke on mine.

Third step is to get a region free DVD player from Lord Bezos because they aren't any more than regular ones and don't get caught up in the mark up game. Search for the least fancy one, if you deal with a seller tell them it's for grandma to watch her region 4 stories on DVD and she can use a regular player but not passwords etc.

Fourth step is to hope the one you bought so many years ago you've forgotten still works and doesn't need wifi update shit.

Fifth step pray that someone uploads it to the internet somewhere but that it's in your language or has subtitles. Some of you know what I mean, fucking German dub.

Lexmark's toxic printer-ink

This is true all over, but there's an especial deliciousness to see it applied to printers and printer ink, always a trailblazer in extractive, deceptive and monopolistic practices of breathtaking, shameless sleaze.

Pierre Beyssac, a director of Internet Europe, recounts his campaigns in the Printer Wars, which start when he ordered a non-wifi-enabled Lexmark printer but got shipped the wifi version.

He didn't mind...except that the two models use different models of ink-cartridge, and he'd preordered €450 worth of cartridges, which were nonreturnable by the time he discovered the error.

The cartridges are identical; all that stops them from working is that they're DRM-locked, with software that refuses to run if you put it in a different model printer (this lets Lexmark charge more for an identical product if they think some customers are price-insensitive).

But there's an answer - a Chinese vendor sells a €15 conversion kit that bypasses the DRM (this is probably illegal in the EU under Article 6 of 2001's EUCD).  Beyssac was able to salvage his €450 ink investment.

But the adventure prompted him to investigate further. He discovered that Lexmark uses DRM to "regionalize" cartridges (similar to DVD regions): a cart bought in region 1 won't work in a printer bought in region 2.

Hilariously, Lexmark claims that this is because each cartridge is specially tuned for each region's "humidity." By way of rebuttal, Beyssac points out that all of Russia shares a region with all of Africa (!).

(Likewise, the Canadian Arctic shares a region with the Pacific Northwest and the Arizona desert)

Now all of this would be idiotic enough if it were any old printer monopolist, but because this is Lexmark, it is especially delicious,.

Lexmark, after all, fought one of the most important battles of the Printer Wars - and lost. Lexmark vs Static Controls was brought by Lexmark when it was a division of the early tech monopolist IBM.

Lexmark sold toner cartridges filled with the cheap and abundant element carbon, and it wanted to charge vintage Champagne prices for it. To that end, Lexmark ran a 55-byte program in a "security chip" that flipped an "I am full" bit to "I am empty" when the toner ran out.

Lexmark's competitor Static Controls reverse-engineered this trivial program so you could refill a cartridge and flip it back to "I am full" so the printer would recognize it. In 2002 Lexmark sued, under Sec 1201 of the recently passed Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

DMCA 1201 made it a felony to traffick in a device that "bypassed an access control for a copyrighted work." The judge asked Lexmark which copyrighted work was in its printer cartridges (it wasn't the carbon powder!). Lexmark said it was the 55-bytle program.

The judge handed Lexmark its own ass, ruling that while software could be copyrighted, a 55-byte I-am-full/empty program didn't rise to the level of copyrightability - it wasn't even a haiku.

Lexmark lost, and today, Lexmark is...*a division of Static Controls.*

That's right, the company that's using all this bullshit DRM to prevent people from using their printers the way they want to is the company that did the exact same thing to IBM, won its court case, and then merged with the company whose racket it had destroyed.

But here's the thing. Lexmark/Static turned on the fact that 55-byte programs (all that fit affordably in a primitive 2002 chip) wasn't a copyrighted work. The cartridges Lexmark sells now have thousands of lines of code.

There's whole OSes in there. These *are* copyrightable. As is the OS in every embedded system we buy, from car engine parts to smart speakers to pacemakers. That means that companies can use DMCA 1201 to prevent rivals from unlocking lawful features in their products.

They can use it to block independent repair and independent security audits. They can make it illegal to use any product you own in ways that disadvantages their shareholders, even if that's what's good for you.

Despite the "C" in DMCA standing for "copyright," this  isn't copyright protection, it's felony contempt of business model - a legally enforceable obligation to arrange your life to benefit multinational corporations' shareholders.

And worse, this law has been spread around the world thanks to the US Trade Rep: it's in 2001's EUCD and Canada's 2012 Copyright Modernization Act. Last summer, Mexico passed an even more extreme version as part of the USMCA.

If you think this shit is odious when it's in your printer, you're going to hate it when it's in your toothbrush, wristwatch, car engine and toaster.

A Spooky New Years!

Happy New Years everyone!

This year saw a lot of nice releases from all corners of the internet. From early prototypes of Pokemon Gold & Silver to unreleased games such as SegaSonic Bros and SimCity for the NES, it looks like 2018 was one of the best years for prototypes in a while! What will 2019 bring?

To start off the new year with something great, we decided to release four prototypes from the MediEvil series! Be sure to check out the articles for each prototype, as the articles will describe how to properly play them.

First up, we have two prototypes of the first MediEvil - one meant for review and another for preview. These prototypes are dated several months before the first retail release of the game. While the two prototypes are dated a few weeks apart, they both contain a considerable amount of differences. Unfinished levels, a programmers test level, different layouts, different textures, and more! 

Next, we have two prototypes of MediEvil II as well! Again, one “preview” prototype and one “review” prototype. The differences between the final version and the earliest prototype are extreme. For instance, most of the FMV sequences in the December prototype are unfinished (only a rough “layout” was rendered for most scenes). Many stages that would be used in the final version are different here in various ways. The prototype contains a level that was cut from the game called “Parliament” which is playable from the cheats menu. The earliest prototype also includes a few test levels as well, much like the first game.

However, not everything went smoothly this time. 

Issues occurred when attempting to backup these prototypes which made us question the integrity of the dumps we created. Besides the typical bad dump that can be remedied through trial and error on different burners with different read speeds, we were constantly presented with an issue where each game would just stop functioning after a certain point (usually during a level change). With no PS1 developer hardware to test with, we were unsure if the games were physically at fault for causing these issues, or if it was a sign of some form of copy protection.

MediEvil marked one of the earliest attempts to thwart pirates with the copy protection method known as “libcrypt”. With this method, unique non-Yellow Book data is stored in subchannels on the disc itself. Games with libcrypt issue special, undocumented firmware commands to perform reads from the subchannel data, and check if it contains the unique data. This was a relatively effective copy protection mechanism for its time, since most pirate releases (even today) do not include the subchannel data, which is not contained in a typical "bin/cue" dump.

It’s also difficult to perfectly extract subchannel data with common CD/DVD readers. Unlike data channels, which use extensive error correction algorithms, most of the subchannels are not error corrected, resulting in pretty much every dump being different (without error correction, reading raw data on CDs with a laser is very error prone!). Most burners also have a difficult time burning subchannel data back to CD-Rs as well. As an effect, at the time, the only way to bypass this copy protection was to debug the game and physically alter the game’s code through a patch to avoid these checks.

After we were sure that the data track (the .img) was being dumped consistently, we decided to debug the games with no$psx to figure out what was going on. To make a long story short, both of the MediEvil prototypes actually use a form of SCEx copy protection where the check is done at the software level rather than just at the BIOS level. This copy protection involves comparing the letters “SCEx” (where “x” is the region of the game or console) with what’s stored on the disc against what’s stored in the BIOS. This check occurs when loading into a new level or quitting the game.

MediEvil II on the other hand doesn’t seem to be using libcrypt. The February prototype seems to work fine and doesn’t seem to check between level changes. The December prototype seems to hang when loading levels even from the cheat menu. However, the prototype seems to work fine in PCSX while any other emulator hangs.

However, even with the correct conditions the game would still refuse to load into another level. Luckily, by disassembling the games, we found that each prototype can be unlocked to work as normal by inputting an “unlock” or “cheat” code combination while the game is paused, which you can see for yourself by checking out the articles for each prototype. While we still aren’t confident that we fully understand what’s going on, it’s possible that the developers intentionally “sabotaged” their builds of the game by disallowing anyone from playing the game on anything besides a developer console, which has the ability to mimic specific regions. It’s also possible that the copy protection is set to always hang to prevent people other than the intended parties from accessing the rest of the game’s contents without knowing how to activate the in game cheats.

Up until this point, we have dumped all CD/DVD based prototypes so far with CloneCD using both a Lite-On LH-20A1L and a HLDS GSA-U10N, drives that have historically low error rates. These particular dumps were created shortly before drx had to move overseas. The move has been a temporary set back since most of the stuff we intend to release is still in progress. The subchannel data will have to be redumped using different methods in order to ensure that the problems we were seeing aren’t caused by the dumps themselves. We consider the dumps okay for release, but we intend to redump everything in the future with a different standard so that we can ensure the best possible dumps. There is some promising software being developed, such as DiscImageCreator by the Redump project.

In 1998, Bill Clinton signed the Digital Millennium Copyright Act into law. At the time, most of the attention was on Section 512 - AKA "notice and takedown," which absolves platforms from liability for users' infringement provided they respond quickly to removal demands.

Over the years, this has been horrifically abused, with everyone from post-Soviet dictators to sexual predators to cults and literal Nazis using spurious copyright claims to censor their critics, often without consequence.

But the real ticking time-bomb in the DMCA is Section 1201, the "anti-circumvention" rule, which makes it a felony (punishing by a 5-year prison sentence and a $500k fine) to help people tamper with "access controls" that restrict copyrighted works.

This rule means that if a company designs its products so that you have to remove DRM to use them in legal ways, those uses become felonies. DMCA 1201 is how Apple and John Deere make it a felony for anyone except them to fix their products.

They just design their devices so that after the repair is complete, you need an unlock code to get the system to recognize new parts. Bypassing the unlock code defeats an "access control" and is thus a literal crime.

But there's no copyright infringement here! Swapping a new part into a phone, a tractor or a ventilator is not a copyright infringement. And yet, it is still a (criminal) copyright VIOLATION. DMCA 1201 lets companies felonize ANY conduct that is adverse to their shareholders.

It's "felony contempt of business model" and you can go to prison for it.

Thing is, it would be easy to fix this law. If you thought that DRM deserved its own legal protection, you could get there just by adding "this only applies when copyright infringement takes place."

But from the very first days, it was clear that DMCA1201 was NOT about preventing copyright infringement, it was about enforcing business models. The first users of this law were DVD manufacturers who wanted to stop the public from "de-regionalizing" their DVD players.

The manufacturers and studios had cooked up a racket where they would sell DVDs at different prices in different countries, and they didn't want Americans shopping for cheap DVDs in India.

But going into a store in Mumbai and paying the asking price for a licensed DVD and watching it in NYC is NOT infringement. It is how copyright is supposed to work: a rightsholder names a price, an audience member pays it, then they get to enjoy the work they've bought.

Likewise the early consoles that also took advantage of DMCA 1201. If you own a Sega Dreamcast and I write a game for your Sega Dreamcast and sell it to you, we are doing copyright right: a creator and an audience member exchanging creative works for money.

But Sega - and the App Store businesses it spawned up to and including Apple - used DMCA 1201 to make it a felony for creators to sell their works to audiences without cutting the device manufacturer in for a commission.

The RIAA's lawyers don't mention the millions of hours of public domain Youtube videos that archivists have preserved using youtube-dl, nor the Creative Commons licensed videos that are unambiguously lawful to download with youtube-dl.

Nor do they mentions the limitations to copyright that sometimes make it lawful to download ANY video from Youtube.

DMCA 1201 isn't just a charter to transform your commercial desires into legal obligations, it is also a powerful censorship tool.

I started this essay talking about DMCA 512, the "notice and takedown" rule. That says that if you believe your copyright is being infringed, you can fire off a notice to the host and demand its immediate removal. If they comply, you can sue their user, but not them.

In 1998, Congress recognized that this was ripe for abuse, and created a "counternotice": if your material is taken down and you think you are in the right, you can counternotify the host and they can put your stuff back up, again, without being liable if you're wrong.

If the rightsholder complains again, the host either removes the content (the rightsholder and user can go to court), or they can leave it up if they think the complaint is BS. This system has been wildly inadequate at protecting legit speech, but it's better than nothing.

And "nothing" is what you get under 1201. When the RIAA complains about youtube-dl to Github, Github pulls it down, but if the developers counternotify them, Github can't restore the files without facing CRIMINAL liability (5  years/$500k).

Copyright trolls have long figured this out: DMCA 1201 is a superweapon for getting content removed from Google and elsewhere: if you assert that someone who recorded you doing something abusive is violating 1201, that video goes down and STAYS down, with no counternotice.

DMCA 1201 is a goddamned dumpster fire, a surefire recipe for techno-corporate dystopia. EFF is suing to overturn it. That trial can't come fast enough:
