Gotchard Daybreak: Tell me Houtaro, when did you first realize it? I get Kudo noticing, but you? Nuh-uh. Houtaro: I guess you wouldn't have realized after all. It all started with Hiroshima. Gotchard Daybreak: That is... not the answer I was expecting.

Aimer: Brave Shine
youtube
You think I first heard this from Unlimited Blade Works? Guess again...I heard it from Unlimited Blade Works Abridged. Yeah, those still exist and I'm a fan. Go ahead and judge, I don't give a shit. It's funny and I like it. And this opening was good enough to stay for a reason. Whatever, shines are brave.
Song Score: 700/10

I hear we're sharing headcanons.
Transmasc Elfman and transfemme Lisanna. They traded clothes as kids before Elfman's growth spurt.
One day when he was a kid, Gajeel woke up to a giant ass centipede crawling on his face and has been creeped out by them ever since. It's kill on sight. He doesn't care how many holes he puts into the walls and floors, he ain't stopping until the damn thing is dead. You'll hear the sudden sound of destruction, walk into a room that looks like a stampede ran through it, and Gajeel will be standing there with a straight face and say, "I'm fine, it's dead now." (Sorta inspired by that one Archer scene in the first episode of Fate Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works abridged)
Okay, I know the manga has the little bio cards of the guild members and Droy's says he's afraid of spiders, but I've elected to ignore that. Spiders are friends and welcomed in his gardens and greenhouses any day. He loves watching them weave webs. I can see him getting a tarantula. JET is the one with arachnophobia. The screeching on top of a table and running a mile away kind.
*Takes a long drag from my cigarette* Trans Elfman you say.......
No no I understand Gajeel here. Not scared of it but if its in my space it has to die immediately. I can respect a man that stands by his principles like that.
Droy🤝Levy, spider enjoyers. Jet 🤝 Gajeel, wtf is wrong with them.

Opinion on abridged shows?
All fan work is a conversation much like how genres are conversations, but Abridged Series work in a different way than fanfic or AUs or fan comics. They're remixed, or edited, footage. And that is a major constraint which dramatically shifts how you make them.
An abridged series by nature has to generally follow at least the basics of the plot for better or for worse. Dragonball Z Abrdiged is a celebration of the creator's love of the series; same for Unlimited Blade Works abridged. You can't get jokes about The Moon like hte one from Episode 6 without adoring the source material.
On the other hand, Sword Art Online Abridged clearly... had some faults with the source material that they felt could be corrected.
These conversations can happen in fic, like when I had Uraraka ask if One For All would kill her in What it Means to Be a Hero and All Might responded with how ridiculous of an idea that was, but an abridged series is having this discussion all the time by the inherent nature of the work.
They're fascinating!

"Saber, I'm gonna need you to sit this one out. If I don't beat him myself, it'll be meaningless." "SHIROU HE'S A SERVANT!" "No Saber, he's a slave."
GG Shirou, that's one fucking phenomenal pre-battle one liner.
I really love for that all this version of shirou has seemed like a dork for most of the abridged, in the showdown with archer he actually shows himself to be pretty damn intelligent - certainly more emotionally so than his future self.
Also archer's angsty monologue devolving into an outright tantrum while Shirou picks his bullshit apart is just...*chefs kiss*.
Project Mouthwash fucking COOKED with this one.

oh if you ever do end up watching Unlimited Blade Works I also highly recommend the UBW abridged. It’s incredibly funny and comes from a place of incredible love and passion for the fate series and what the creator has made in general. It also has great editing but mostly it’s really fucking funny

Nine (?) People You Want to Know Better
Thanks @lykegenia for the tag!
Last Song: If singing to myself counts, it was either Stan Rogers' "Free in the Harbour" or David Rovics' "Saint Patrick's Battalion." Listening only, either something by the Great Big Sea—a great, although now retired, Newfoundland folk-rock band—or the song "Phoenix" (no, not that one) that someone made a Lord El-Melloi II's Case Files AMV for.
Currently Watching: Waiting for the next episodes of Unlimited Blade Works Abridged and Fate/Apocrabridged (both arguably better than their source material) and slowly working my way through Star Trek: Enterprise.
Currently Reading: Depending on my physical location, either The Dawn Watch, a personal and global biography of seaman-novelist Joseph Conrad, or The Watchmaker of Filigree Street, a lightly fantastical mystery set in late nineteenth-century London. The novel that still hangs around in my head a good deal is Amor Towles' A Gentleman in Moscow, about a Russian nobleman sentenced to house arrest in a Moscow hotel's attic, and one of the most enveloping pieces of writing I've encountered.
Current Obsession: I bounce back and forth between a few, but at the moment I'm mostly preoccupied by Dragon Age: Origins and the Fate series—mainly the original visual novel, Fate/stay night, and the mobile game, which at least offers ample opportunities to practice rewriting interesting concepts. Fate/Zero did Diarmuid Ua Duibhne unspeakably dirty and I have an ongoing WIP (plus several more fic concepts) dedicated to correcting that, while my BioWare brain time is frequently devoted to making sense of their lackadaisical worldbuilding—sometimes within the bounds of canon, and sometimes by assaulting canon head-on—often at the cost of actually (re)writing the fic that's all theoretically about writing.
Tagging: @swtorpadawan @the-raven-of-highever @trekking-through-life @starknstarwars @ftmshepard if anyone wants to join in on this!
