Duet of the Sea

Little ears perked at the sweet music entering her mind. Anya had snuck out of her room to play with the foam and rocks of the surface world, but tonight she found something even more beautiful. A human lady! She was so pretty to little Anya's eyes. Her hair was the color of the coral she played in and her eyes were the shapes of almonds and her cheeks pink.

"My dear child, I love you." Her voice was like listening to the waves. It was soothing and washed over her ears. Anya was about toddler age and the woman was bundling a small infant in her arms. His hair matched hers to a T. His eyes were closed as the woman rocked him to sleep.

"I will always want you, even if he doesn't." After the last words were spoken, she stood up and made her way toward the window. Her voice was even more musical as she began to sing a lullaby. Anya listened intently, mimicking the words on her lips.

"My child. O sweet son of mine. The moon shines for you and brightens the night. Your future is so bright. I love you with all that I am and all that I have. My child, sweet son of mine. The sea is free and so are you. The seaweed on your skin as you travel for your adventures. You will be free." The lady placed her baby in the bed and kissed his forehead.

"Sleep tight my son."

The little mermaid girl found a chill over her spine as she heard the song. Once it was over she swam back to her room, grabbing shells and seaweed to start a pile.

Years passed and Anya watched the little baby grow. She memorized the song from the mother and as the little baby was able to walk, Anya left the shells and little trinkets of sunken ship treasure along the shore or docks, watching him examine and sometimes take them. She had grown an attachment to him. Finally they were both toddlers when she first got to have skin contact with him.

He first tilted his head to the side, a bit surprised by what he had heard, hadn’t the thought that a stranger would actually want to see him kissing someone crossed his mind, furthermore a quite known redhaired. Nevertheless couldn’t Law deny the thrill of anticipation that came with said dare.

Grabbing the seam of his spotted hat which casted a shadow over storm grey eyes, letting only the bottom half of his face be visible, tanned lips turned into a grin. “Very well”
